THE VOICE Our Mission To provide an environment that promotes the independence of senior citizens. By offering direct services and programs adapted to their specialized and changing needs and interests. What’s happening at the Senior Center? Sept-Oct. Senior Center Highlights Birthday Lunches are the first Thursday of each month, get here early! Senior Center Dances every 1st and 4th Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m. –10:00 p.m.cost is $6.00 Nutritional Program Mon-Fri. First come first serve. Serving begins at 11:30 AM Summer has come and gone, leaving us with cooler weather. The Autumn season is approaching, and what better way to welcome it than with a celebration! Join us for a Halloween Luncheon on October 30th. We encourage all our guests to participate in the festivities by wearing a costume. We would also like to announce that a registration form is now required when signing up for trips. You will find a copy of the registration form on page 5. Our staff at the West Covina Senior Center would like to wish everyone a safe and Happy Halloween! Learn about the different health resources offered by the different health organizations that will be tabling at the event. We will provide an environment where our community can receive a flu shot as well as information regarding health care options, and services. Anyone interested in receiving a flu shot must pre register in advance by calling the West Covina Walgreens pharmacy at (626) 338-0904. Movie Friday Join our center every Friday for a movie showing! The Senior Center will be screening a movie that has been recently released each Friday at 9:15am and 1pm . Enjoy the experience on our 70” HD TV with our very own home theatre system. Free popcorn is provided. Details: Serves: 6 Prep Time: 15 minutes Slow Cook: HIGH for 6 hours or LOW for 8 hours Calories: 368 CAL Total Fat: 6 g Saturated fat: 2g Cholesterol: 48 mg Sodium: 698 mg Total carbohydrates: 41 g Dietary Fiber: 4 g Sugars: — Ingredients: Directions: 1 1/2 lbs beef chuck or brisket, cut into 1-inch cubes 1/2 medium yellow onion thinly sliced 1. Stir Beef, onion, ginger, garlic, chile, vinegar, molasses and 2 tbsp of the soy sauce into the slow cooker. Pour in beef stock. Cook on HIGH for 6 hours or LOW for 8 hours. 1 piece of ginger (2 inches), peeled and sliced 4 cloves garlic, sliced 1 bird’s eye or serrano chile, stemmed and sliced lengthwise 2 tbsp rice vinegar 2 tbsp. molasses 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce 7 cups unsalted beef stock (such as Kitchen Basic) 1 pkg (9.5 oz) udon noodles 6 cups chopped bok choy 1 cup sliced scallions, plus more for garnish 1 cup cilantro, chopped, plus more for garnish 2. During the last 15 minutes of cooking, bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add udon; cook for 2 minutes. Add bok choy and cook for 2 more minutes. Strain. Add noodles, bok coy, scallions, cilantro and remaining 2 tbsp. soy sauce to soup. Stir and serve. Garnish with extra scallions and cilantro.
