Golden rumours
still continue
A WAVE of phone calls and requests for
interviews have hit Letaba Herald since the
article, "Golden Years’ management explains
controversy", appeared in the June 25 edition
of the paper.
All the old issues regarding the establishment
were brought up, with a few new allegations
being added to the already extensive list of
concerns.
This time round however, many individuals
that spoke to the Herald claim to have firsthand
knowledge of some of the allegations, but
thorough investigation was hampered because
Daan Roelvert, Chairperson of the Golden
Years committee, is now refusing to answer any
questions unless the Herald reveals its
sources.
What Roelvert could however tell us is that
the entire committee has not resigned from
their posts, as rumour has it. He stated that only
one member has left the committee within the
past month, and that the public must understand that it is normal for a committee to
change sporadically.
According to Sarie van Vuuren, Admin Manager of Golden Years, the current committee
consists of Daan Roelvert, Dewald Vermaak,
David Olivier, Minnie Jansen and Delmari
Landman.
What is of concern however is that the
committee listed with the Department of Social
Development consists of D Roelvert, R Reiners,
M Roelveldt (Roelvert), C Landauer, G van
Schalkwyk and J Meades - all (except Roelvert)
having left the committee between two and
five years ago.
What is of even greater concern is that
Golden Years has not submitted its required
annual report for the years 2007, 2008 and
2009 to the department.
Therefore, the department has no record of
Golden Years’ activities, financial statements or
accounting officer’s report after 2006.
Meanwhile, one person, a resident of Golden
Years, has agreed to come forward should he be
required to testify against Golden Years.
Describing Golden Years as autocratic, victimising and corrupt, he confirms most of the
allegations against it, including the quality of
the food served there, although it has to be said
that the food has allegedly improved somewhat
recently.
He stated that the food served to the Letaba
Herald reporter on a previous visit/inspection,
was especially prepared to impress the visitor,
and in no way resembled the quality or quantity
of the food usually served there.
Having had to put up with two sandwiches
for supper on one occasion, exactly 20 spoonfuls of soup on another, and macaroni and fish
on yet another, the resident decided to cancel
his meals at Golden Years and provide for
himself.
Another individual stated that he eventually
opted to take food to his mother-in-law every
day rather than let her eat the food served at
Golden Years.
The Herald also received confirmation from
people that are willing to donate money and
food to Golden Years, but only after the current
(entire) committee resigns, in fear that their
donations might end up in the wrong hands.
This in light of alleged missing donations and
the apparent disappearance and wastage of
food.
Stinginess, despite food going off, has been
confirmed by several individuals.

Phalaborwa pad verby motors gesnel.
R71 is 80km/h.
’n Bakkie met 12 arbeiders het by die
T-aansluiting by Venbeck regsgedraai na Letsitele.
Niemand
is dood nie.
gevind sowel as ‘n halwe bottel Gentlemans
Jack.
Hy is
was 0.73. die toelaatbare vlak is 0.24.
Die saak is uitgestel tot 8 Augustus.

A LOCAL youth crashed into a police car last
Thursday in the early hours of the morning.
There are several versions of what exactly
happened leading up to the collision.
Originally reports came in that there were
two police cars racing one another, but according to police information, it was two
civilian cars involved in the alleged race, one
of which crashed into a police vehicle.
It is believed that the two drivers were
returning from a night out when the collision
occurred in Skirving Street, near Supa Quick.
The event transpired in the early hours of the
morning, at around 02:30.
The driver of the police car, constable B.S
Mathebula, sustained minor injuries and was
soon discharged from Tzaneen Medi-Clinic.
The civilian car that collided with the police
vehicle was a VW Polo. The driver’s details
have yet to be released.
A charge of reckless and negligent driving
has been opened for further investigation by
the police.
Concerned public demands answers
Continued from p 2...
It is clear that the public is concerned, and
are demanding answers.
Two people are challenging Roelvert to
publish Golden Years’ constitution in the
newspaper and are sure that discrepancies will
emerge.
Roelvert has been given the opportunity to
respond to these allegations, but at the time of
going to press we hadn’t received any reply.
Should he choose to respond, his comments
will be published in next week’s paper.

SAPD ondersoek glo
drie na aanranding
Bertus de Bruyn
DIE ondersoek na die drie
SAPD konstabels wat twee bejaardes twee weke gelede in ‘n
bekende handelsbank se parkering hardhandig behandel het is
nog nie afgehandel nie.
Letaba Herald het Maandag
weer met die SAPD geskakel. Die
ondersoek duur glo nog voort en
die voorval is glo onder die stasiebevelvoerder
Thomas
spesifieke konstabels was glo

Hul
sal seker nou beweer dat die
konstabels onervare is maar sou
hul so vinnig opgetree het as die
ou dame eerste ’n saak gemaak
het. Dis onaanvaarbaar dat sy van
haar vryheid ontneem is sonder
dat ‘n saak geregistreer is.

Local ANC member dies in car crash
By: David Peek
AN ANC member died in a car crash en route
to bid for toilet tenders in Giyani.
Lizzy Bopape, 38, an emerging entrepreneur from Lenyenye, near Tzaneen, died when
the bakkie she was in swerved off the road
between Tarentaalrand and Giyani.
Bopape was allegedly flung from the bakkie
when it left the road. The bakkie supposedly
rolled over her and killed her instantly.
The driver, a relation of a well-known driving school instructor, allegedly sustained
minor injuries and was quickly discharged
from hospital. He is currently under investigation on charges of capable homicide.
In a statement from Bopape’s sister, Dimakatao, she was involved in an extensive
multi-million rand project near Giyani at the
time of her death. The tender she was on her
way to bid for was for toilets and boreholes in
the Giyani area.
Bopape’s funeral was held on Sunday in
Lenyenye where Cassel Mathale, the Limpopo
premier, gave a moving speech that gave
credit to the late ANC member.

Support energy saving

Eskom has reported an increase in power
demand between the hours of 06:00 - 09:00
and from 18:00 - 21:00 daily.
Due to the current cold weather there is an
increase in pressure on the already strained
electrical supply system.
Eskom has once again reminded its customers to use electricity as sparingly as possible.
If this increase in the use of electricity
continues then the instances of power outages
will increase. This is due to the Eskom electrical network being overloaded.
Eskom has released the following tips in
order to help you to be as electricity efficient
as possible.
Any unoccupied rooms should have their
lights turned off. During the times when
electricity usage is at its peak, geysers should
also be turned off. Stoves should not be used
for heating homes, rather use energy efficient
heaters and/or other sources of heat. Boil only
as much water as your needs require.
Remember, if the community as a whole
works together then there just may be enough
electricity for all.
were very reliant on Bopape for financial
support.

The Haenertsburg Interact Club (run from
Stanford Lake College) is involved in community upliftment projects in the area. At
present they are helping with a collaborative
building project between the Haenertsburg
Rotary Club and the community at the rural
Maditobane creche.
The Interact members are planning on decorating the inside of the nursery school with a
world map mural, and would like to enhance
the mural with the national flags of as many
countries as possible. They want to create a
bright, stimulating, educational environment
for the children using the facility.
The World Cup has stimulated both national
pride, and huge interest in the nationalities and
cultures of the world. There seems to be an
abundance of flags in circulation at the moment, and the Interact Club is requesting
donations of any flags, of any size and form, to
use in decorating the educational mural at the
school.
Flags are an excellent teaching tool, and any
extra flags could also be used to make teaching
aids for the school, or could be distributed to
other schools that are in the area.
Any items such as toys or clothes can also be

THE DECOMPOSED body of an unknown female was discovered in a

Workers protest against alleged corruption
HUNDREDS of municipal workers in Tzaneen
downed tools on Tuesday in protest against
four senior employees accused of corruption
and nepotism.
The workers, mostly members of the South
African Municipal Workers Union, employed
by the Solid Waste Division of the municipality, vowed to continue with the strike
until action is taken against the four accused
senior employees.
The four accused are Andre le Grange, Chief
Financial Officer, Tinus Visser, Head of Human Resource, Henk Mienie, Head of the
Solid Waste Division, and Jacques Myburg,
Head of Information Technology - a position
the protesters say was created by the accused
even though the municipal structure allegedly
does not provide for it.
They are also accused of employing their
friends and running an illegal money lending
business in the municipality.
Police maintained a strong presence during
the protest to keep the situation from getting
out of control.
THERE could be a serial killer
roaming the streets of Shiluvane
village and its surrounding areas,
according to Maake Police.
This comes after another decomposed body of a naked woman was discovered last Friday
afternoon in a field at Mine-view
village, near Dr CN Patudi Hospital, 2km away from where the
first body was found two weeks
ago.
The woman, supposed to be
aged between 15 - 20, was found
with a plastic bag pulled over her
head and her underwear placed
next to her body. Her clothes
were missing.
The police believes that the
woman was raped before she was
murdered.
Maake Police Spokesperson,
Constsable Mpho Seroto, said the
police is investigating a case of
murder.
He said the body has not yet
been claimed by anyone, and
appeals to anyone who might
know of a woman who has been
missing for two weeks to contact
the station on 015 355 8354.
Police are warning women to

vanjaar gaskunstenaars by die Letaba Agri
Expo (voorheen Letaba Skou.)
gewild by oud en jonk. Kurt se stemvaardigheid en vernuf as blink balladevertolker is
bekend.
videoversoekprogaram Jukebox reeds drie
bum in jare, Smiling back at me, het platinumstatus bereik.
indrukwekkende lys verdiende musiek-erkennings toe.
Is
jou lippe geseël of is jy reg vir Tzaneen? Kom
Nicholis Louw hom as ‘n veelsydige, ernstiger
kunstenaar gevestig.
ballades. Nicholis se
talle
pryse,
van
SAMA-er- kenning tot
Huisgenoot/Tempoen
Rapport/Vonk-toekennings, is die stempel op
sy vaardigheid as vertolker en liedjieskyrwer. Geniet omkap-kitaarspel en drywende perkussie en
gryp die rimte saam
met Nicholis Louw!
Dis pure energie!
Twee sterre. Twee
topkunstenaars. Twee
sangers wat die Laevelders gaan kom
bederf… dit is byna te
goed om waar te
wees. Maar dis waar!
Kurt Darren gaan
die voete laat juk op
Donderdag 5 Augustus om 20:00 en
Nicholis Louw dieselfde tyd op Vrydag 6
Augustus. Die vertoning is ingesluit by
jou
hektoegangskaartjie vir ‘n skamele
R40.
Moenie vanjaar se
Letaba Agri Expo misloop nie. Daar is ook
verskeie ander hoogtepunte wat wag.
LETABA AGRI EXPO
LETABA HERALD - Vrydag 9 Julie 2010
Haar man is die bekende
in Tzaneen begin aankom.
besprekings oor ‘n suksesvolle beesboerdery
laat kom. Daar is ‘n driejaar-plan saamgestel
uitbrei.

GENERAL
Maak ‘n prinses se sprokie waar
PRINCESS Project is 'n gemeenskaps projek
soos 'n matriekafskeid of formele geleenthede
prinsesse.
Die hele gemeenskap kan by die projek
betrokke raak sonder dat dit 'n finansiële
implikasie inhou.
Baie meisies droom jare lank
grimering ens. Indien enigiemand betrokke wil
raak of wil hê dat ons die klere by u moet kom
oplaai, skakel gerus Elna Haasbroek 082 773

ALGEMEEN
Rhino poaching still escalating
RHINO poaching throughout the country has continued to
escalate at an unprecedented rate since the beginning of the
year.
To date, South Africa has lost a total of 124 rhinos this
year.
The SA National Parks have lost 55 rhinos, while the
provinces have lost 38 rhinos collectively and the private
sector has also collectively lost 31 rhinos.
Of the rhinos lost, 5 were black rhino and 119 white
rhino. The rhinos lost through poaching throughout the
country constitute approximately 0,6% of the estimated
white rhino population of 19 409 and approximately 0,3%
of the 1 752 estimated black rhino population.
The Chief Executive of SANParks, Dr David Mabunda,
said that the country is distressed by this continued
escalation in rhino poaching, but what is equally worrying,
is the escalating uninformed wild claims of the imminent
extinction of the rhino populations.
Whereas the poaching is unfortunately at unprecedented
and unacceptable levels it is still below 1% of the existing
populations and well below the annual growth rates of both
white and black rhino which are currently set at between
6% - 11,5% and 3% - 6,5% respectively.
The joint operations involving the SAPS, SANParks and
environmental crime prevention teams from provincial
conservation authorities have so far made 42 arrests, 22 of
them in the Kruger National Park this year.
On Tuesday, June 29, a 29 year old Vietnamese national,
Xuan Hoang, was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by a
Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court for possession of seven
rhino horns after he was apprehended trying to smuggle his
cargo through OR Tambo International.
Dr Mabunda repeated the call for all citizens to be vigilant
and report to the police any suspicious activity especially
for low-flying Robinson R44 helicopters with concealed
registration numbers which are widely used by criminals in
rhino poaching.
New Eco Club will meet soon
THE Tzaneen Eco Club will be holding its first meeting just
after the June/July school holidays.
Following many requests for an environmental group in
the Tzaneen area, a number of interested people have come
together to establish the Club.
Meetings will take place about 10 times a year and will
take the form of talks and outings. Subjects will be varied
and will cover everything from astronomy to zoology. Talks
will usually take place on Friday evenings and there may be
a related field outing the following day.
Other outings and weekends to a number of the interesting areas on our doorstep and further afield will be
organised from time to time.
Tzaneen and the surrounding area have a huge base of
skilled and knowledgeable people on subjects as diverse as
astronomy, birding, botany, conservation agriculture, entomology, fresh water ecology and geology. The scope is
almost endless.
Tzaneen and its surrounds are situated in an amazingly
diverse area with Bushveld, forest and grassland within half
an hour’s drive and with hundreds of birds and trees all
around. We have ‘plains game’ and ‘Big-5’ just on our
doorstep and the geology and ecology of the area is
fascinating.
In addition to meetings and outings purely for interest and
fun, the club will offer occasional special courses for people
who want to gain either introductory or a more specialised
knowledge of particular aspects of the environment. Some
possibilities of beginner’s courses are ’An Introduction to
Birding’ and ‘An Introduction to Trees’, and more advanced
courses are ‘Raptor Identification’ and ’Tracking and Field
Craft’. Activities will be open to everyone and costs, where
necessary (perhaps a reserve entry fee or an honorarium for
a visiting speaker), will be kept to a minimum.
The initiators of the club are Mike Amm, Pierre Naudé,
Tony Schultz, Sarel Snyman and Peter Williams who,
between them, have a far-reaching base of local and
specialist knowledge.
To find out more or to make contact with the club contact
Sarel Snyman on 083 449 8200 or Pierre Naudé on 083 778

Be on the lookout
for cyber criminals
WITH increased online usage comes a higher
possibility of becoming the victim of phishing
or e-mail scams.
Letaba Herald has received many calls from
the public over the past few weeks regarding
fraudulent e-mails, with the callers uncertain
of how to spot a scam.
Most Internet users are unable to tell the
difference between fraudulent e-mails designed to steal their identities and legitimate
corporate e-mails.
Not only are customers unable to accurately
spot fake e-mails, they are regularly surrendering personal banking information.
The reason look-alike e-mails continue to
fool customers is that the criminals behind
them are getting much better at their craft.
Using a regular e-mail programme, fraudsters can easily create e-mails that appear to
come from any address they want in a few
minutes.
The fraudsters often access an unlocked or
unsecured PC, or a hacked online account and
send an e-mail as another user.
They can also hack into a mail server and
add an unauthorised message into the mail
queue.
“So be vigilant at all times if you do Internet
Banking because criminal gangs are sending a
lot of fake e-mails aimed at tricking you into
giving them vital personal account details so
that they can steal your money,” says Christo
Vrey, Managing Executive at Absa Digital and
Self-Service Channels.
Most fake e-mails can be spotted by their
message that is “urgent” or that needs "immediate attention" or asks for personal information, like passwords or bank account
numbers.
Often these e-mails try to make you panic by
saying your bank needs to verify your identity
or that your Internet security has been
breached.
There will then be a link that leads to the
phishing site, which looks just like the website
you are used to seeing when you visit for
legitimate business.
The web address on the link and the phishing websites look legitimate because they
would have been copied from genuine websites.
Banks will never ask you for your account
details or log-in information via e-mail.
If you do not know the sender of an e-mail,
it is always best to simply delete the message.
If you do not know the source of an attachment, link or file, it should be deleted as
well because some phishing e-mails put a
Trojan onto your computer the second you
click that link.
This programme will start to record every
stroke you make on your keyboard, sending it
directly to the scammers.
A message from a well established company
you do business with will rarely have a link
within the e-mail message.
It will ask you to log into your account, not
ask you to click the link provided.
We suggest that you use this short checklist
to protect yourself against phishing attacks:
* Access your Internet Banking session by
manually typing the web address into your
browser and then clicking the logon icon.
* Keep your access information secure (account number, user number, and all PIN
numbers and passwords).
* Install and regularly update the latest
anti-virus software (Absa Internet Banking and
Cellphone Banking clients qualify for free first
class commercial anti-virus software for their
PC or cellphone).
* Refrain from banking at public terminals
like Internet cafes.
* Only provide credit card details to reputable companies; look for the lock and key icon
and security certificates when shopping online.
* Change your PIN number and password
regularly.

Volunteers care for the needy
THE TV blares loudly as soccer fans
shout their excitement over goals
scored or goals missed, and the sound
of vuvuzelas echo between the
houses. Mavis* cannot stop to watch
the festivities as she is too busy with
her work as a volunteer community
care worker.
She is thinking of her last family visit
as she walks to the next one. Helping
the mother of three in taking her
TB-medication means that the mother
will soon get better so that she can take
care of her children once again.
Mavis knows that she will not always be able to save someone, but if
she can ease suffering and provide
support to a family, then she has done
some good.
Mavis shivers as she walks, with the
shadows getting longer as warm afternoon turns to cool evening. She
knows that tonight will be another
cold night, but she has given her last
money to the family she saw so that the
little ones can eat while the mother is
still too ill to get up.
Mavis shakes herself from thinking

about it. She focuses instead on the
next family she shall visit, where both
parents are HIV-positive and the father
is too ill to get out of bed. "I must not
think of myself," Mavis thinks to herself, "but rather on what more I can do
to help others. As long as I have two
legs and two arms and the strength to

There are many people like Mavis,
working tirelessly and for a paltry
stipend, caring and supporting their
communities. These Community Care
Workers are true heroes - addressing

Without such caregivers, families
without money and support would not
be able to cope with sick family members, and the knowledge and skills that
the caregivers pass on during their
visits are invaluable. It is time that the
Mopani District communities recognise these contributions and thank
them for it.
The Blanket Project is a way that the
Mopani District can show its true
appreciation to these selfless care-
givers. The initiative is focused on
providing blankets to caregivers
throughout the district through the
registered community-based organisations through which they work.
Blankets will also go the vulnerable

IMAGINE a day without plastics.
The annual and highly successful
Fantastic Plastics Competition 2010,
coordinated by the plastic industry's
Enviromark, is underway and the call
for entries is open.
The theme for this year's competition is ’IMAGINE… a day without
plastics’, and includes the themes,
‘IMAGINE…anything is possible with
plastics’; ‘...a life without plastic packaging’; ‘...a clean South Africa’ and
’Fantastic plastics’.
First prize includes R5 000 for the
school and R7 000 for learners plus a
fun-filled weekend in Knysna in
September.
The weekend will include the
prize-giving event, sightseeing and
participation in the International
Coastal Clean-Up on September 18.
The Fantastic Plastics Competition
was launched in 2006 and has grown
by leaps and bounds. In 2009, entries
were received from all over the country, from rural schools to private
schools.
This year, the competition is for
Grade 4 - 12 learners. The closing date
for entries is July 23.
The aim of the Fantastic Plastics
Competition is to create awareness of
plastics among children and educate
them on the positive attributes of
plastics, as well as the responsible use
and disposal thereof. They have the
chance to make a difference in their
homes, schools and to the environment, being future custodians of the
world.
The competition is sponsored by the
Plastic Federation of South Africa,

Rotaractors, volunteers bring colour to Macadamia residents
SEVERAL unrelated groups came together for a common cause last week. Macadamia Frail Care
and Hospice wanted a dreary grey wall converted into an uplifting mural, and Warriors
Rotaract Club, as well as five students from Tuks, stepped up to the plate to transform the front
view of several of the frail care units and the Hospice in-patient unit. Kyle Dearle - Tuks student,

nearly-completed wall at Macadamia Frail Care. Story on p22...
CARING for the elderly, several youths came together last week to convert a large grey wall at
Macadamia Frail Care into a piece of colourful art. Dylan Bester (front) and Eric Berrington
(back) were some of the Warriors Rotaractors who helped to paint the wall.
ADDING some colour to life, five students studying at Tuks, four of them previous residents of
Tzaneen, joined the Warriors Rotaract Club last week to paint a mural over a grey wall at
Macadamia Frail Care. The students’ faculty requires its students to complete 40 hours of
community service in order to graduate. Tunet Koekemoer, Grant Davidson, Candice de
Almeida, Kyle Dearle and Heiko Steinkopf ready to brighten up Macadamia Frail Care.

A COLOURFUL mural will now be the first thing the elderly at Macadamia Frail Care see when
they exit their homes. The Warriors Rotaract Club, together with five students from Tuks,

Youth brighten elderly’s lives
INSTEAD of a dreary grey wall greeting some of
the elderly at Macadamia Frail Care when they
exit their homes, a larger than life mural,
created through the combined efforts of several
unrelated groups, will be the first thing they
see.
The fantasy world, painted with scores of
colours, was created after Hospice and Macadamia Frail Care decided the grey wall facing
the entrance of many of the Macadamia Frail
Care units and the Hospice in-patient unit had
to go.
The Warriors Rotaract Club was approached
by Gail Zaayman of Hospice, who was more
than happy to assist with the wall as their
annual visit to Macadamia Frail Care was also
in the pipeline.
Almost serendipitously, Zaayman was approached by two sets of parents who were
looking for a community project that their
children and their friends could get involved
in.
A faculty at Tuks university requires their
students to complete 40 hours of community
service before they can graduate.
Thus these five students also became part of
the project.
Another major contributor to the project was
Jack’s Paint. Offering their expertise and advice, the artists were equipped with the correct
tools to ensure a durable piece of art.
They also lent the group the tools necessary
for the project, and sold the paint used at cost
price, saving the group a considerable amount
of money.
The Warriors Rotaract Club and the five Tuks
students completed the mural last week,
adding flowers, aquatic life, fictional characters, a massive rainbow and sun, and even
Einstein to the scenery at Macadamia.
The piece of wall directly in front of the
Hospice in-patient unit will also be receiving
attention soon.
The Warriors Rotaract Club also shook cans
last weekend to raise funds for Hospice
Tzaneen, and made several thousand rands.

Martjin trap duisende kilos oor kontinent
Den Hartog, ‘n Nederlander in murg en been
het Dinsdag in Tzaneen oorgeslaap by
sit.
Die eerste vraag wat enige persoon hom
sekerlik eerste sou vra is: "HOEKOM?"
Die antwoord was vinnig en beslis: "Whatever
you think you can do, is possible"
inwoner gesê het: "Oh the place where the
World Cup Soccer Tournment is going to be".
aanbied, dra natuurlik baie daartoe by, vertel
hy.
Ja hy is ‘n vurige ondersteuner vir sy land se
span en probeer wedstryde kyk (indien moontlik) waar hy oornag.
Hy reis egter lig met slegs drie reis sak(ies).
Hy vertel dat die meeste daarvan onnodig
is.
smaaklose kantore, bly vir hom ‘n ope vraag.
Oor 20 000 km het hy dalk klaar die
antwoord gekry.
Totsiens, Famba Kahle, Sterkte, Nikumavelela Swa Kahle!!
Indien jy sy reis wil volg besoek gerus:
www.amsterdam-capetown-onthebike.com
Martijn
den Hartog by sy fiets.

Hockey ladies return
from district tournament
THE Limpopo ladies' hockey team that made
the trip to Pietermaritzburg for the South African Country Districts tournament showed good
improvement on the previous year, finishing
8th out of the 12 teams that competed at the
tournament.
The team that represented Limpopo this year
went onto the field motivated and gave a good
account of themselves, despite the fact that
they did not have access to an Astro-field to
prepare thoroughly for the inter-provincial
tournament beforehand.
Limpopo teams always start at a disadvantage, and improve as the tournament progresses, and this year was no exception.
Although Limpopo lost their match against
Midlands A 2 - 5, it should be noted that no
other team was able to penetrate the defences
of the Midlands A team until the semifinal
stages.
In the second and third matches, Limpopo
went down 0-3 and 0-6 to Midlands B and
Border respectively.
On days four and five Limpopo was more
comfortable with the playing conditions and
beat Northwest 2-1 whilst working hard to
draw 1-1 against Northern Gauteng.
This result placed Limpopo in the middle tier
of the playoffs.
THE LIMPOPO ladies’ hockey team bettered their performance this year at the South African
Country Districts tournament held recently. Ashley Murray from Unicorn Club in Tzaneen was
selected as the Limpopo player of the tournament.
Testament to the improvement of the team's
performance over the course of the week was
their closely contested matches in the playoff
stages.
Although Limpopo lost 1-2 to Natal Coastal,
and went down 1-2 to Mpumalanga in the final
match, compared to previous years, Limpopo
showed that ladies' hockey in the province
had improved markedly, and that they were at
the tournament to compete, and not to win the
wooden spoon.
Two Limpopo umpires also received new
grades at the tournament.
Marli Beetge jumped two grades to become a
Prov 2 umpire, and Pieter Jooste moved up one
grade, also receiving a Prov 2 grade.
Janet Coetzee from the Phalaborwa Club was
chosen for the SASKO SACD B side that will
play at the IPT's in July in East London.
Management and the players would like to
thank everyone that helped with the arrangements, as well as the sponsors:
Zetpro and Subtropico - Levubu; Silverton
Radiators - Louis Trichardt; Mondi Packaging Head Office and Nelspruit; Limpopo Senior
Hockey League.
As with every sporting code, hockey in
Limpopo will not be able to survive without
corporate or other sponsorship.
Mountain2Mountain wedren
Mountain2Mountain padfietswedren in 2008
aangebied.
prysgeld vir dié wedrenne beloop meer as R60
000.

TCC wins league for
first time in 16 years
Tzaneen Country Club won the Gross League
in the Limpopo Province for the first time in 16
years.
This is a major achievement if one takes into
consideration who the other clubs were that
TCC beat en route to be crowned Limpopo
Champs for 2010.
TCC competed against Polokwane Golf
Club, Mogol Golf Club (Lephalale) and
Kameeldoring GC (Potgietersrus). All of these
clubs have much bigger membership bases (4
to 5 times bigger) than Tzaneen and this makes
it a big upset for such a small club as TCC to
win the Gross League final in Limpopo. (Gross
League = no handicaps involved) TCC results
were as follows:
They beat Polokwane - 5.5-2.5, Kameeldoring 6-2 and halved their match 4-4 with
Mogol.
Tzaneen will compete on July 17/18 against
all the winners of the other provinces at the
exclusive Ebotsi Golf Club in Benoni.
The club winners of Mpumalanga, Highveld,
Northwest, Central Gauteng, Gauteng North,
Ekhuruleni and Limpopo will compete against
each other on a match-play basis to determine
the strongest club of all.
TCC would like to wish the team the best of
luck at Ebotsi Golf Club. The team that won in
the final were: Tom van der Westhuizen, Ryan
Hyde, Paul Wiltshire, Henk Geldenhuys (Captain), Louis Erasmus, Marthinus Barnard, Thys
Du Toit and Johan Coetzee.
It is worthwhile noting Tom van der Westhuizen halved his match against the 12th Top
Ranked amateur golfer (CJ Du Plessis) in South
Africa. Truly a great achievement.
