2013-2014 President’s Report
Good afternoon and welcome to the
Insurance Institute of B.C.’s Annual General
Meeting, your support and presence today is
appreciated.
The new executive and council worked very
well together accomplishing and delivering
on the items within their individual mandates.
As a result of this hard work the membership
of the IIBC grew from 4458 members to 4501, an increase just shy
of 5%. This is the first time that the Insurance Institute of B.C. has
exceeded 4500 members. Well done everyone!
My 2013-2014 term has gone by quickly and I am pleased to report
that we had another productive and most importantly, successful
year. It is exciting to look back at the many accomplishments that
have occurred during the year which include:
• Three CIP golf tournaments in Vancouver, Victoria and
Kelowna;
• 5th annual Battle of the Insurance Bands;
• First wine tasting networking event;
• Introduced our first virtual licensing course;
• Diversified our advertising and for the first time, advertised at
the Vancouver airport;
• Exceeded GIE (licensing), seminars and membership targets;
• Achieved a surplus.
During the term we again were able to hold three successful golf
tournaments with good support from attendees and sponsors for
all three. The tournaments continue to be popular amongst those
in the industry, with the Vancouver tournament selling out.
In October I attended with Mark Francis, FCIP, ACS and Wayne
Coates, BA, CIP the Insurance Institute of Canada’s 60th AGM
held in Toronto. This event is a great opportunity for us to exchange
ideas with others from Insurance Institutes across Canada and of
course, partake in social activities that bring everyone together
and truly establish some camaraderie amongst the group.
2
In November I had the opportunity to attend the Institutes’
three convocation ceremonies, first Vancouver, then Victoria
and Kelowna. There is a tremendous amount of preparation that
goes into each event in order to make it special for the graduates,
their employers and their families. Each convocation is unique
with its own special traditions. In Vancouver we held a luncheon
attended by 431 people and in Victoria a dinner for 124 with their
famous raffle, with many going home with a prize. Kelowna had a
luncheon with a smaller group where everyone in the room knows
one another; there is a real sense of community felt in the room.
Attending the convocation allowed me a chance to mingle and
get to know others from different parts of the province with an
interest in the Insurance Industry and Institute. This was truly
one of the highlights of my time as President.
In January, Vancouver can be a rainy, dull month so we decided
this would be a good time to hold our Annual Wine Tasting
Networking Event. The venue chosen was a wine room in
Gastown. The event was a success and will be held again in the
fall.
In February we held an Instructor Day at the Hyatt that saw a
good turnout. We started with lunch followed by a session run by
Dennis Huber, CIP, ACS of ICBC.
Our instructors are a key part of the Insurance Institute and
contribute to its success through their dedication. The Institute
now offers an Instructor Certification Program designed to help
instructors build a positive learning environment for a broad
spectrum of CIP students, using a variety of contemporary media
and teaching approaches.
The one-year program consists of four courses, each of which
is three months long. Courses address how people learn;
instructional design; evaluation of CIP student progress; and
virtual and in-class content delivery. This is so important as it
helps with consistency in the teaching of our courses. I am happy
to report that we have 4 instructors that have graduated from this
Program and 10 are currently enrolled.
This spring the Institute hosted the 5th Annual Battle of the
Insurance Bands at the Fan Club on Granville Street. I love
attending this event but I really started to feel old this year when
I commented to someone that the music was too loud. As a result
3
of this well-attended event we were able to donate net proceeds
from ticket sales and sponsorships in the amount of $6,416 to the
Greater Vancouver Food Bank.
Another busy year for the Institute has come to an end. I’d like to
take this opportunity to thank Danielle Bolduc for her support
and dedication throughout the year as well as the other members
of the Insurance Institute team, Ayla Collins, Sarah Timewell,
Donna Salahor and our newest, Winnie Hon. Amy Lemieux
recently left the Institute to fulfill her dream of travelling and we
thank her also.
The Executive and Council have been a pleasure to work with and
did a wonderful job. IIBC did close the fiscal year with a surplus.
We purchased a much needed copier and a scanner to mark the
licensing exams.
Being President of the Insurance Institute of B.C. has been an
honour and a rewarding experience that I will never forget. Thanks
again to all the volunteers and staff that continue to contribute in
making this Institute a success.
Respectfully submitted,
Jan Brownridge, BA Hons, FCIP, CRM
President, Insurance Institute of BC
4
Report of the Academic Division
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone here
today for showing your support of the Insurance Institute of BC.
I know you all have busy schedules and your attendance is much
appreciated. It also provides me with the opportunity to recognize
and thank Danielle Bolduc, BComm, CIP, our office manager,
who works hard and takes care of all the extra details to make
sure the IIBC runs successfully. So, thank you Danielle and to
your team, Ayla Collins, Sarah Timewell, Donna Salahor, Amy
Lemieux and Winnie Hon.
Also, a big thank you should also go out to Jan Brownridge, BA
(Hons), FCIP, CRM for her great job as President this year, as
well as our Executive and Council. Jan has a lot of responsibility
and travel with her organization, Munich Re, but demonstrated
an exceptional amount of commitment and dedication with her
attendance at many meetings and events.
Membership and Course Registrations
This past year, IIBC set a membership record of 4501 members as
of March 31, 2014, which is great news. However, our CIP program
was slightly shy of target with 1103 students, where our target was
1150. This continues to be related to the significant changes at
ICBC in 2012-2013 – another 16% lower this past year, but ICBC
has taken some positive steps to reverse this trend (thanks largely
to Glenda Ouellette, BA, MBA, FCIP, Vice Chair IIC Western
Region and Kerry McLaughlin, CIP, ACS Secretary-Treasurer
IIBC).
We continue to offer CIP classes in various formats: fast track,
evening and full virtual in various locations: Vancouver, New
Westminster, Surrey, North Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo and
Duncan.
Additional good news on the GIE licensing program front –
we exceeded our target of 300 by 4% with 312 students – this
represents a significant improvement over the 278 last year. This
year, we introduced a virtual licensing class which is very helpful
to our out of town students whom in the past only had the home
study option. We continue to offer the GIE licensing course in
Vancouver, New Westminster, Victoria and Nanaimo, and as a
5
home study program.
Education & Career Connections
Manjit Biring, MBA, FCIP of Intact chaired our Education
Committee and had a busy and successful year.
In Vancouver, we hosted the 9th annual “Feed the Minds of
Youth” with 50 attendees (including parents & students).
Our 2013 winner of the prestigious Instructor of the Year Award
was Greg Thierman.
For Education Week we offered the following free seminars: Study
Skills, CIP “What’s in it for me” and Insurance 101 from Broker
to Adjuster, although we are looking to refresh that offering for
next year.
The committee coordinated two professional half day sessions for
our instructors.
Okanagan Committee
Our Okanagan Committee was chaired by Janna Smart, CIP
of Southern Interior Claims Service. Jan Brownridge, Peter
Hohman and Danielle Bolduc attended this year’s Convocation
Luncheon in Kelowna. The turnout for the event was solid at 51,
and enjoyed by all.
We held 2 seminars in Kelowna: Subrogation and Equipment
Breakdown Insurance. The committee also coordinated a
successful networking cocktail event this January.
The Okanagan Committee held their 2nd Annual Golf Tournament
in September with 70 attendees, a slight increase over last year’s
67. The event was a success; however, due to golf being a very
common and competitive type of event, the Committee has
arranged for a Boat Cruise set up for July 11th in Kelowna.
Marketing and Communications
Debra Copeland, BA, FCIP of Intact chaired our Marketing and
Communications Committee for the first time and did a fantastic
job! In March, we sent out our annual mailing to over 110 CAIB
Grads which includes a congratulatory letter, a CIP syllabus, and
a credit transfer form.
6
We continue to advertise and promote the designation and the
brand.
As in the previous years, advertisements included:
• Full page CIP ad in Business in Vancouver, next to the list of
top Brokers in BC;
• Full page CIP ad in BC Business magazine;
• Full page Graduate ads in the Vancouver Sun, the Province
and BC Broker magazine;
• Bronze sponsorship of the Salute dinner;
• Full page CIP ad in Western Living magazine.
We did a 2 month Transit advertising campaign that provided
expansive coverage and included:
• 4 posters at the Sea Bus terminal
• 9 Skytrain platform posters
• 40 posters in the Canada Line interiors
We also placed a digital billboard ad in Squamish during the BC
Brokers’ convention in Whistler held in May.
A highlight of our new advertising this year was the four ads at
the baggage carousels at YVR in March and April to target both
Spring and Easter breaks. Two were in the domestic terminal and
two in the international terminal.
Conclusion
This past year proved once again to be a busy year with many
activities. I appreciated the opportunity to attend IIC’s 60th
Annual AGM held in Toronto with Jan Brownridge, Wayne
Coates, BA, CIP and Glenda Ouellette. As always it was well
attended and allowed us to hear about new ideas and take part in
informative discussions.
Additionally, I was able to attend the Western Regional Meeting
with Jennifer Perry, CHRP, CPM and Wayne Coates, BA, CIP –
sharing ideas and success stories with the other Western Institutes.
Peter Hohman commended the work and efforts from our
Institutes, and noted the strong financial position of the IIBC and
its contribution to the sound financial health of the IIC. It also gave
us an opportunity to spend time with Margaret Wasserman, the
7
Director of the Western and Atlantic Regions for IIC. Margaret
has brought to IIC a wealth of knowledge and we look forward to
continuing working with her and our local team led by Danielle
Bolduc.
Respectfully Submitted,
Mark Francis, FCIP, ACS
1st Vice President, Academic Division
Insurance Institute of BC
8
Report of the Professional Division
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone here today
for showing your support of the Insurance Institute of BC. I’d
also like to acknowledge the great work of the IIBC office staff –
Danielle Bolduc, Sarah Timewell, Amy Lemieux, Ayla Collins
and Donna Salahor. And of course, we’re very grateful for all the
contributions of our volunteers.
Congratulations to Jan Brownridge, BA Hons, FCIP, CRM
for her good work as President this past year. Jan cares deeply
about protecting and respecting the interests of our members and
providing value for the membership dollars they spend. I have no
doubt Mark Francis will have to work hard to fill her shoes.
Events Committee
• Lynne Vetter, FCIP, Chair (retired) Wawanesa Insurance
• Mary Dehod stepped in as Chair the last couple of
months
• Succeeded by Sarah Tung, BCom, FCIP, CRM, Chair,
Intact Insurance
•Co-Chair Mary Dehod, FCIP, CRM, Wawanesa Insurance
Lynne has put so much time, energy, effort and care into
coordinating her teams and organizations very successful events
over the years. We appreciate and deeply value the contribution
Lynne has made to the IIBC and our members. While we are sad
to lose her as part of our team, we wish her a happy and healthy
retirement.
We’re also excited to give the opportunity to lead this Committee
to another very qualified person, Sarah Tung.
Battle of the Bands
On March 6th, the 5th Annual Battle of the Insurance Bands, CIP
Charity event was held at the Fan Club for the 2nd time. This year,
we invited all previous winners back for an “All Star” competition.
We are very pleased to have raised a record $6,416 for our charity,
the Greater Vancouver Food Bank – reflecting our ‘net proceeds’
policy. By all accounts it was an exceptionally fun event and over
250 in attendance (up over 20% of last year).
9
CIP Society Golf Tournament
In May 2013, we hosted our 11th annual CIP golf tournament in
Vancouver. The Vancouver Golf tournament always sells out; this
year we had 152 players. We continue to offer the wine theme
which is highly regarded by our attendees. Every year, we feature
a different local winery. Our wine sponsor hosts a wine tasting
station plus they sponsor the wine served with dinner. We also
have prize sponsors who contribute to the cost of the wine given
to every attendee to take home instead of the typical golf prizes.
Convocation
Convocation was held on November 21, 2013, at the Hyatt
Regency Hotel. We had 431 attendees 120 CIP Grads and 18 FCIP
Grads. This event represents the accomplishments of not only the
students, but the family and employer support that’s needed to
successfully achieve the designations. Everyone takes great pride
in arranging and participating in this event, as it is the centrepiece
for the education programs delivered by the Institute.
Wine Tasting Event
In February, we hosted our first wine tasting networking event; we
sold out in 1 week with 52 attendees.
Due to its popularity, we are planning to offer it twice a year.
Future Directions
• Sharon Knotts, CBA, FCIP, The Guarantee Company of
North America
• Carlos Caceres, BA, CIP, Co-Chair, Gore Mutual
Insurance
Sharon and a very dedicated committee spearheaded an initiative
to obtain data on the insurance market in the Okanagan and
Interior regions so we could have a better idea of our membership
penetration rates. This team has also done a very thorough review
of our by-laws and prepared recommendations. These folks just
do not lose their enthusiasm! After the by-law review, they’ve
started to take a fresh look at a broker strategy to increase our
membership within the broker community. Thanks Sharon for
your continued dedication and leadership!
10
Seminars
• Lianne Crawford, CIP, Gore Mutual Insurance
This Committee is on fire!! They organized some great seminars
for our members and are well into planning for the upcoming year.
This past year included:
• Academic Seminars – 11 (target of 10) – 489 attendees
• CIP Society Seminars – 13 (target of 12) – 440 attendees
Our seminar attendance increased by 23% over last year. Our top
three seminars were Earthquake (103 attendees), Strata (72) and
Subrogation (63).
Volunteer Acknowledgement
The accomplishments of the Professional Division are the result of
many dedicated, hard-working and committed volunteers. We’ve
been so fortunate to have Chairs & Co-Chairs with tremendous
leadership abilities. We truly value what our volunteers do for the
IIBC and for our members year-after-year.
As a thank you to all of our Council & Committee volunteers,
we hosted our 5th Annual Volunteer Appreciation lunch for the
Executive, Council Chairs and committee members at Steamworks
on March 14th. This was a well-attended event as it always is.
It was my first time attending the Western Regional Meeting
hosted by the Insurance Institute of Saskatchewan and it was a
pleasure to be there. It was very apparent that the BC Institute
leads the pack in so many ways. Our Institute is the envy of the
others largely due to Danielle’s efforts and dedication.
On a final note, I’d like to express thanks to Sarah, Amy, Donna
and Ayla for all they do from the office to support our members
and our volunteers. Each of these women is truly amazing and
very much part of the success of our local Institute.

Vancouver Island Chapter
President’s Report
The following report was presented by Wayne Coates at the
Vancouver Island Chapter’s Annual General Meeting and
Election of Officers on June 12, 2014.
The Vancouver Island Chapter of the Insurance Institute of
BC continues to maintain our membership presence with 596
members. Our strong number of memberships ensures that our
input on both the Provincial and National levels is heard.
We have a strong team of council members on the Island. We could
not have offered the many seminars, events, and classes without
each of the committee members’ valuable time contribution. I feel
very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with a great
group of council and committee members and develop friendships
with each of you.
I’m pleased to report that we were able to successfully offer eight
seminars during the 2013 -2014 term. We have already started
planning topics and lining up presenters for the 2014 -2015 term.
We hosted two cocktail events, one in Nanaimo on October 24,
2013 with 24 attendees, and the other in Victoria on September 26,
2013 with 59 attendees. Those in attendance enjoyed a fabulous
appetizer buffet and networking with others in the insurance
industry.
On March 1, 2013, we had our Volunteer Appreciation night at the
Six Mile Pub in Victoria. All proctors, instructors and committee
members for the past two years were invited to attend.
Our 7th Annual CIP Society Golf tournament was held on June
21, 2013 at the Glen Meadows Golf Course with 62 golfers and
an extra 12 attendees for the dinner. This event is always lots of
fun. This is of course in large part due to the generosity of all our
sponsors who help make this a successful event. We look forward
to seeing you at the 8th Annual Golf tournament which is being
held on June 19, 2014 at Victoria’s Olympic View Golf Course.
We are very excited to be trying a new venue for our annual golf
tournament. Here is hoping for great weather that day as lots of
activities are planned.
12
On November 22, 2013, we held our Annual Awards Dinner
& Dance. We recognized eight CIP graduates and two FCIP
graduates. Each and every one of our graduates should be very
proud of their achievement. Congratulations to all of you.
During the past term, I had the opportunity to travel to Edmonton
for the IIC Western Regional meetings, and to Toronto for the
Board of Governors and National AGM. I’ve come back with
valuable insight on how we compare to other chapters within the
Insurance Institute of Canada.
On September 13, 2013, we held our 2nd Past President’s event
in Victoria. It was held at the Fireside Grill; lots of fun was had
for all who attended. We are planning to host our 3rd annual Past
President’s dinner in the fall of 2014.
I have been on the council for over five years and have enjoyed it
each year. I have made many new friends and learned more than I
could have possibly thought I would.
I am honoured to work with a great group of council members
who have volunteered their time, energy and expertise to plan
each seminar, event and CIP class. I would like to thank the
Vancouver Executive Committee for their continuous support to
the Vancouver Island Chapter.
I am looking forward to another successful term as President
for the 2014 – 2015 term. During this term I look forward to the
opportunities this role entitles me such as making new contacts
and building further relationships with those working in the
insurance industry.
