Pastor
Fr. O’Malley rose from his bed one morning to a fine
spring day in his new west Texas mission parish. He
walked to a window of his bedroom to get a deep
breath of the beautiful day outside. He then noticed
there was a donkey lying dead in the middle of his
front lawn. He promptly called the police station. The
conversation went like this: “Good morning. This is
Sergeant Jones. How might I help you?” “And the best
of the day te yerself. This is Fr. O’Malley at St. Ann’s
Catholic Church. There’s a donkey lying dead in me
front lawn and would ye be so kind as to send a couple
o’yer lads over to take care of the matter?” SSgt. Jones,
considering himself to be quite a wit and recognizing
the Irish accent, thought he would have a little fun with
the good father, replied, “Well now Father, it was always my impression that you people were the ones
who took care of the last rites.” There was dead silence
on the line for a long moment; Fr. O’Malley then replied, “Aye, ‘tis certainly true, but I thought I would
notify the next of kin first, which is the reason fer me
call.”
Who do you think was the first one Jesus’ friends and
family notified about the resurrection? Who will you
and I notify? Will we tell anyone at all, “Hey. Jesus
rose from the dead!”? Or will we assume that people
know Easter is not about chocolate, but the risen
Christ. Truth be told, it may be better to demonstrate
our faith through acts of kindness and deep joy than to
talk nonstop about our faith or what happened in
church this weekend or how the kids got chocolate
bunnies at the early Mass (we thank the Knights of Columbus for doing that by the way).

Mary of Magdala brought us
out of the dark.
Many have the false impression that St.
Mary Magdalene was a sinful prostitute that
Jesus saved. This traced back to a homily
given by Gregory the Great in 540 – 604
AD, connecting her to the “sinner” who
found Jesus in the home of a Pharisee to
wash his feet with her tears and dry them
with her hair. From this connection, now
rejected by scholars and the church, there
came the popular notion of Mary Magdalene
as a “penitent sinner or prostitute.” The
early church recognized her as “the apostle
to the apostles.”
St. Mary Magdalene was an original
Galilean disciple of Jesus and seems to have
been most recognized among the many
women who followed Jesus in his itinerant
ministry. Few of these many women are
recognized by name. Therefore, because her
name is listed, her importance to the early
church is thus emphasized. The two vital
facts about Mary Magdalene are that she
was a witness to the crucifixion and that
she was the first witness to the
resurrection. It is hard to imagine what it
had been like for Mary to follow Jesus to
Golgotha and witness His passion and death.
It should be recalled that all of the male
disciples had fled. So, as a man, I guess I
too would not have been there. I would not
have had her courage. I struggle to imagine
her agony at the cross, following right into
this “first day of the week.”
How much more poignant does this make
the moment of her finding the empty tomb?
In the next section after this gospel, we find
Mary simply crying. But we celebrate as we
know who it is that will comfort her: Jesus!
By His resurrection, He comforted Mary
Magdalene, continues to comfort us and
more… so much more. While we may have
once had a false impression of Mary, she has
given us now an impression to treasure.

Called to be Fully Engaged in Liturgy

“The liturgy . . .
moves the faithful, filled with ‘the paschal sacraments,’ to be ‘one in holiness.’”
(Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 10)
We, as the worshiping assembly, are in the midst of the most might celebration of the entire liturgical
year—the Triduum (the Three Sacred Days). There is no more powerful ritual of the central mystery of our
faith! The Triduum is our fullest, most complete expression and understand of Jesus Christ. Yet each
liturgy enacts the saving or healing presence of Christ that removes human brokenness, sin, and death.
In its place, Christ gives the gifts of love, peace, justice, and life. This is the Paschal Mystery: Christ’s
Passion, Death, and Resurrection. The Spirit empowers us to move from death (brokenness, fragmentation,
and sin) toward life (healing, communion, and love). God’s gift of the Spirit, given in Baptism, allows us to
receive Christ’s presence in his Word and Eucharist so that we might be more joined to the Father. This
transformation by the Trinity leads us closer to the holiness God desires and at the same time brings about
a greater harmony and unity (communion) between the faithful and God. Thus at this sacred time we can
truly exclaim with St. Augustine:
“We are an Easter people and Alleluia is our song.
Let us sing Alleluia here and now in this life, so
that we may sing it one day in the world to come
when we are set free!”

Canonization Announced
Recognizing that Blessed John XXIII and John Paul II
have widespread reputations for holiness and that years
of studying their lives and actions have proven their
exceptional virtue, Pope Francis announced he would
declare his two predecessors saints at a single ceremony on April 27.
John Paul II—Karol Józef Wojtyla, known as John
Paul II since his October 1978 election to the papacy
was born in Poland on May 18, 1920. In 1942, aware
of his call to the priesthood, he began courses in the
clandestine seminary of Kraków. He received his
priestly ordination in Kraków on November 1, 1946 and
finished his doctorate in theology in 1948. That same
year he was vicar of various parishes in Kraków as well
as chaplain for university students until 1951. On July
4, 1958, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Kraków
by Pope Pius XII, and was consecrated in September of
that year.
In January 1964, he was nominated
archbishop of Kraków by Pope Paul VI, who made him
a cardinal June 26, 1967. Since the start of his pontificate on October 16, 1978, Pope John Paul II completed
more than 200 pastoral visits. No other pope has encountered as many individuals as John Paul II did: more
than 16 million pilgrims participated in the general audiences held on Wednesdays. In addition, there were the
numerous government personalities encountered during
official visits, and in the audiences and meetings held
with heads of state and with prime ministers.
John XXIII—Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, the third of
13 children, was born on November 25, 1881 in Italy of
a family of sharecroppers. With the entry of Italy into
World War I in 1915 he was recalled to military service
as a chaplain. On leaving the service in 1918 he was
appointed spiritual director of the seminary. In 1921 he
was called to Rome to reorganize the Society for the
Propagation of the Faith. In 1944 he was appointed

Venice, and expected to spend his last years there in
pastoral work. In 1958 he was called to Rome to participate in the conclave that elected him pope. The diocesan synod for Rome, the first in the history of Rome,
was held in 1960; Vatican Council II was convoked in
1962; and the Pontifical Commission for the Revision
of the Code was appointed in 1963. Since his death on
June 3, 1963, much has been written and spoken about
the warmth and holiness of the beloved Pope John. Perhaps the testimony of the world was best expressed by a
newspaper drawing of the earth shrouded in mourning
with the simple caption, "A Death in the Family."

The mission of Roncalli High School is to educate in the Catholic traditions
of spiritual growth, life-long service, and academic excellence.
2014 Roncalli Pierside Auction
Please join us on Saturday, April 26th for another exciting Roncalli
Pierside Auction. The silent auction begins at 5:30 with the oral
auction to begin at 7:00 p.m. The evening promises to be an exciting
event with over 62 oral auction items and 1,500 silent auction items
being offered. Several of these items are one of a kind and are hard
to find anywhere, at any price. Don’t miss out on all the fun! This is
an adults only event.
The true motivation behind the auction is to raise funds for the
continued successful academic and spiritual growth of the students of
Roncalli, primarily tuition assistance. Roncalli has been providing a
Christian based curriculum to students of Northeastern Wisconsin for
over 40 years and continues to offer programs to students of various
ability levels. Only through events like the auction is Roncalli able to
continually attract, retain and support the outstanding members of its
faculty, staff, administration, and increased numbers of students.
Pierside Auction Mass
On Saturday, April 26th, Roncalli High School will be
celebrating two very special events. It is the weekend
that Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli (Pope John XXIII), the
school’s namesake and patron, will be canonized a
saint in Rome by Pope Francis, as well as the 30th
Anniversary of the Pierside Auction itself.
“Papa John”, as he was affectionately called, was
beautified by the Vatican in 2000, one step away from
sainthood. The whole world has known that if ever a
saint walked this earth, Angelo Roncalli, Pope John
XXIII, was it.
The public is invited to attend the 4:00 Mass in the
Roncalli Fine Arts Center to honor him and celebrate
30 years of the Pierside Auction. You are then invited
to stay for the auction and view the various ways we
are honoring him on this special weekend as well as all
the hundreds of items we will have on display.
