Bashaw at our 2016 show. John is pictured here with his wife Lois. Born in 1922, John was 14 years old when he captured a wild pigeon found on a La Crosse street, and that sparked his interest in raising birds. Old-time La Crosse Poultry Club members Bill Gilster and John Schnell gave John some bantam Rhode Island Red and Black Rosecomb chicks the following year - 1937. HIs first show was at the C.I.O. Hall in La Crosse. In 1939 he raised Black Rosecombs. When they were mature, he was told he had as good of a Black Rosecomb pullet as the locals had seen. John convinced his dad to let Gilster and Doc Serstad (a local dentist and poultry fancier) take the pullet to a major show at Madison Square Garden in New York. John says the pullet took Best of Show, and the rest is history. From that point on he kept raising good birds and helping others to get started in poultry and pigeons as opportunities presented themselves. John's history includes showing with the Badger Poultry Club's Dairyland Classic Show for 44 out of the 47 years they held their show at Richland Center. The Coulee Region Poultry Club succeeded the Badger Club after the latter disbanded following their final show in June of 2011. He also showed each year at the La Crosse Poultry Club's show from 1939 through 1968. Other favorite shows have been the Minnesota State Poultry Association shows at the Apache Plaza Mall and later at Hutchinson along with the Brown County Pigeon and Poultry Fanciers show at New Ulm, Minnesota. He has also shown at major American Poultry Association meets in Nebraska and in Oklahoma, traveling to the latter with the late David Lefeber of the old Badger Poultry Club. John has also enjoyed raising and racing homing pigeons, breeding and showing many varieties of waterfowl & large fowl and bantam chickens, attending swap meets, and swapping stories with other poultry fanciers over the years. When asked about his favorite breed, John will tell you it is still the Black Rosecomb bantams. They are known as the "Little Aristocrats" of the poultry world. Congratulations to John W. Bashaw for his participation and his many contributions to the world we know and love as the Exhibition Poultry Fancy!
