DAY 7 | 29th Nov, 2011
Good films work and digital technology More films needed
to
create
awareness
helps overcome financial problems
about disability
L
ack of funds and difficulties involved with censorship remain
the main concerns amongst filmmakers in Asian countries, though the
latter problem varies from country to
country.
Speakers at the Open Forum organized by FFSI yesterday, filmmaker Ami
Drozd of Israel said around 26 features
and 80 non-features had been made in his
country last year despite difficulties in
getting finance and little government
support. However, he said the government had no control over content and
therefore films were made which were
critical of the government of the day.
He said the cinema of his country was
a ‘cosmos’ of several cultures. There were
around thirty schools of cinema and therefore a large number of filmmakers. He
said that filmmakers in his country
wanted to make films on varied subjects
but people generally wanted to see cinema
related to the Israel-Palestine issue and the
effects on the families because of that.
Bangladeshi filmmaker Kamar
Ahmed said the country had been under
military rule for twenty years after its liberation in 1971 and therefore was still
too young for a good film industry. However, filmmakers had already made a
T
Ami Drozd, Aditya Assarat, Karmade Dea, V K Prakash and U Radhakrishnan
mark overseas by winning several
awards, including the award last year for
‘Nirantar’. Responding to a comment by
U Radhakrishnan who was moderating
the discussion, he said people were more
responsible than the media for the kind
of films that found favor with the audiences.
V K Prakash who has made films in
various languages said there was need to
recognize that there was another Indian
cinema beyond Bollywood and said the
National Film Awards had shown how
regional cinema was doing better than
Hindi cinema. In fact, there was now
greater understanding of regional cinema
in Bollywood. He said the festivals like
IFFI gave a good platform to such films.
The onset of digital cinema had led to
more young people trying their hand at
making good cinema and it was important to understand that ‘good films work
more than money’ and so creative filmmakers should not give up the efforts to
make their films.

here is need to change media perception if awareness has to be created amongst people about the problems faced by disabled or different enabled children,
and the corporate houses should not shirk their social responsibility. This was the consensus of an Open Forum on
.Cinema and Specially-abled children’ organized yesterday.
Shalini Gupta, member of the informal group SAATH
of parents of special children, said the aim of her group
was to find ways to create self-confidence amongst such
children as most of them had some special talent. She said
her group which had 250 parents was prepared to help
other parents needing any help, and was even giving
scholarships to help special children.
Shailendra Gupta said media should work to change
the public perception of disability and ensure that such are
looked at with compassion and not derision. Referring to
a question about corporate houses not coming forward
with CSR activities, he said CSR was a much maligned
word and groups working in this field should go on irrespective of whether they get money or not.
Swati Bhatt whose film ‘Accept me’ on a specially enabled young person is being screened here said that her
aim was to give a big slap to this society which is so insensitive to such children. Dilip Bapat said two per cent of
the population in the country comprised special children,
but the film industry was still not taking this seriously.
most speakers said the trend to use disability as the butt
of comedy in Indian cinema, was changing and awareness
was growing with some very sensitive films on the subject.

My film was made with a lot of passion
“I Found Master Classes Impressive.”
Preeti Jhangiani
- Hugh Welchman
A
ddressing the media centre
yesterday, Preeti Jhangiani
said that though she is an actress,
after hearing the script of ‘Sahi
Dhandhe Galat Bande’ she decided to do the role of a producer
for the first time. “It was my passion for the project that made me
produce the film, though film production is very tough job. This
film which has been directed by
my husband Parvin Dabas, focuses on the current issue of land
acquisition. It is pathetic to note
that the villagers get only 1/8 of
the compensation due to them”.
‘Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande’ is
the story of a gang of four friends
who are given a job, which will
give them enough money to make
all their dreams come true, but to
achieve the same, they have to go
against their conscience. They
come across a multitude of characters to achieve their desired goal
in this film.
Preeti Jhangiani said “A film
should have entertainment, besides soul and meaning to make it
a success. My film is not a mind-
less comedy. It was shot in Kanjhawala (Haryana) near Delhi and
has Haryanvi humor. The shooting of the film was completed in
24 days. The actual characters and
locations have been used. It is a
great honor for me that my film is
one of the three Hindi films selected for the Indian Panorama in
42nd IFFI. I had come to Goa 2
years before along with my husband’s film “Khosla Ka Ghosla”
but this time I find tremendous improvement in the 42nd IFFI. I
have not acted for last two years
because I was in my family way.
Now, I will start acting after some
time. I am more than satisfied with
my performance as a producer and
wish to produce a Punjabi film in
the near future”.
-- Satinder Mohan
H
ugh Welchman, the producer of
The Flying Machine, ,removing
his recently won Oscar trophy from
his bag, first wisecracked, “Since I
won the Oscar, I have changed my
name from Hugh Welchman to
Oscar Welchman”.
The Flying Machine, is a co – production between several countries like
Poland, Europe, France & China including India. “Though I had begun
the film after getting a commissioned
assignment from my own country’s
Polish Film Funding Council, to raise
more funds, I flew down to Beijing
and came back with a Chinese co –
production deal. Then other countries
too joined in. My film had almost 168
stereophonic visual affects so my production house Breakthru Films contacted Accel Animation Studios in
Chennai, which offered to join hands
with us. The next thing I knew I had
flown down to India for the first time
and landed up in Chennai as their special guest for 6 months till the 3D Animation work was complete.”
Hugh signed off. “It is strange
that though today Hollywood has
millions of dollars budget to make
action -oriented films for adults, not
a single dollar budget is allotted for
children’s film. I found Master
Classes at IFFI very impressive.”
-- Shaheen Raaj
‘FILMS MUST ADDRESS RESPECT FOR LIFE & HUMAN RIGHTS TO ENHANCE UNDERSTANDING’
“R
espect for life and human rights
are very important and I make
movies addressing these issues
because it is important for people as well as
governments, not to repeat the errors of the
past." Thus spoke Francisco Manso, director
of ‘The Consul of Bordeaux’, the 42nd IFFI's
opening film.
Addressing a crowded media meet at the
Maquinez Palace on his birthday (the Lisbon
born director turned 62 on November 28)
Manso said he likes to make films on historical
and social issues like slavery and capital punishment "since the remembrance of the past
enables us to understand our role in the present
and a proper perspective for the future.
For courageous persons like the Consul of
Bordeaux, Aristides de Sousa Mendes, it was
a question of principles, of conviction, and
Francisco Manso, Vitor Norte, Jose Mazeda and Henri Seroka
risk-taking." Stationed in 1940 in the port city
in southwest France, Sousa Mendes saved
30,000 people, among them, 10,000 Jews,
from the Nazis. His moral courage inspired
Manso.
Portugal produces ten feature films a year,
because as producer Jose Mazeda , who has
shot two features and six documentaries in
Goa ,explained, " the production process is
very expensive. "I would love to make more
films" he said, pointing out that he had got
Spanish,Belgian and Polish funding for "The
Consul of Bordeaux" while Manso said he
has made co-productions with Portuguese
speaking countries in Africa.
Lead actor Norte told this correspondent
that he had seen Schindler's List several years
ago and prepared for his role by researching
the various forces which shaped the principal
character and interacting with members of
Sousa Mendes' family.
To save the lives of the desperate, hungry
and homeless, he would stake his reputation,
his high position, health, friends and even,
the future of his family. Sousa Mendes was
dismissed by the Salazar administration, and
died destitute in 1954, his family impoverished and his home reduced to ruins, until
very recently, when the Portuguese government and private donors would restore it as
a museum commemorating WW2 and human
rights.

is high time we should say
what we want to say, and film
is the best medium through
which we can reach a wider
section of people.
Why your banner is named
Chobimaker?
We,
(Krishnokishore
Mukhopadhyay and Soma
Bandyopadhyay)
founded
Chobimaker with the sole
purpose of making good
films, short films to start with.
What your film Modhyaborti
Alinde is all about?
The film is all about ‘decadence’ and a fight against it, a
crusade sort of.
What is a good film?
To our mind good films do
have a definite and positive
message, which helps people
to move forward.
You have made a film for the
first time and it has been selected for Indian Panorama.
How do you feel?
We really feel honored but
this is not our first film. The
first one was Modhyrekha, a
Bengali short film based on
psychiatric disorder which
was screened in Kolkata Film
festival in 2008.

SHAMSHER RAJ KAPOOR STILL LIVES ON
JYOTHI VENKATESH pays homage to the evergreen actor of Bollywood
I
t is quite strange but true that though I
have interviewed almost every Kapoor,
including the great Raj Kapoor and the
gentleman Shashi Kapoor, in my 39 years of
career as a film journalist, Shammi Kapoor is
one actor who I just could not pin down for
an interview. He flamboyant Shamsher Raj
Kapoor a.k.a Shammi Kapoor was made of
different stuff. When he passed away at 79,
the man who had almost pioneered the internet era in India almost two decades ago,
when it was in its nascent stages was actually
full of life.
The man who stole every one’s heart when
he sang Yahoo Chahein Koyi Mujhe Junglee
Kahen was mystical with his rudramanimala
but quite jovial at heart and liked to live life
king size. Though he was suffering from a
kidney ailment and had to make regular trips
three times a week to Mumbai’s Breach
Candy Hospital for his dialysis, Shammi
used to drive down to the suburbs in his care
to visit his friends and return to his house.
The actor with a never-say-die spirit used to
lament the loss of several people close to him
in his life, like his father Prithviraj Kapoor,
brother Raj Kapoor, his samdhi Manmohan
Desai, his first wife Geeta Bali etc and say,
“I have seen life. I have seen too many
deaths.”
My senior colleagues still talk about the
days when they used to barge in at his residence in town and he would prove to be an

R
ajesh Pinjani was a film
critic with a prestigious
publication in Nagpur.
After having won 3 National
Awards and 6 Maharashtra
State Awards for his debut
making Marathi film BABOO
BAND BAAJA he has become
confident enough that now he
can make films of his own
choice so that he can narrate
stories close to human heart.
What made you turn into a
filmmaker from being a prolific journalist?
I thoroughly enjoyed my
stint as a journalist with the
Lokmat group in Nagpur. Then
in the year 2000 I attended an
audio visual event after which
I felt a slight attraction and inclination towards films. After I
attended a Short Film Festival
in 2003 in Nagpur where I saw
films like Udaan and Disha and
attended the Pune International
Film Festival (PIFF) where I
met several film directors, I
took an instant decision to don
the new avatar of a filmmaker.
How did you begin?
section of filmmakers out there
I was mainly inspired by my
mentor filmmaker Purushottam
Jadhav, an IAS officer, who not
only encouraged me but also
supported me in making my beginning as a short filmmaker by
making short films on issue
based subjects.
How was your journey from
making short films to making
your debut with Baboo Band
Baaja?
The transitional journey
from a short filmmaker to a
feature filmmaker was too
Milind Shinde in Baboo Band Baaja
Apart from watching films
in PIFF and meeting a cross
good to be true as I succeeded
in bagging 3 national awards
for my debut film Baboo Band
Baaja itself. I am overjoyed
that my film, which figured in
PIFF as well as Asian Film Festival, is also featuring in the ongoing 42nd IFFI Goa.
How did you think of making
Baboo Band Baaja?
One of my friend once suggested to me that if at all I am
really thinking of becoming a
filmmaker, I should make a beginning by making films based
on real life issues in Marathi. I
started looking out for a director. But even after 6 months
when I did not find one, I decided to direct it myself. Since
the subject of Brass Bandwallah’s life demanded extensive
research, it took me almost one
a half years to complete it. I
stayed in Kamthi near Nagpur
to study their lives. My brother
also helped me by collecting all
the newspaper clippings on
them.
Can you narrate the story of
Baboo Band Baaja in a nutshell?
It is a story about a man enacted by Milind Shinde who
plays a Band in a local area
Band group to eke out his living. He wants his son enacted
by Vivek Chabukswar also to
take up the same profession.
But there arises a conflict as his
wife enacted by Mitalee Jagtap
Varadkar wants him to pursue
his education.
It shows the irrepressible
surge to soar in life pitted
against the vicious grip of circumstances. Produced by Nita
Jadhav, Baboo Band Baaja has
bagged 3 National Awards including for Best Actress for
Mitalee Jagtap Varadkar &
Best Debut film of a director
for me. Not only this, it has
also bagged 6 Maharashtra
State Awards, besides the PIFF
award this year.

impeccable host treating them to beer and a
sumptuous non vegetarian lunch, unlike the
stars of today who like to be inaccessible to
the media. Though way back in the 70’s, as a
cub reporter, I used to visit the sets where he
was shooting for his directorial venture
Bundlebaaz with Rajesh Khanna and Sulakshana Pandit, I was scared to talk to him and
chat with only Rajesh Khanna and Sulakshana.
Like what my friend and Shammi
Kapoor’s only son Aditya Raj Kapoor says
succinctly, “Shammiji did manage to do what
was considered impossible- uniting all the
Kapoors under one roof at one time”. Almost
every Kapoor was seen at the funeral, including his younger brother Shashi Kapoor,
nephews Randhir, Rishi and Rajeev, besides
his grand nieces Karisma and Kareena and
grand nephew Ranbir, besides Neetu and
Babita, who do not even see eye to eye.
Shamsher Raj Kapoor a.k.a Shammi
Kapoor is not dead. He will live on .From
Rail Ka Dibba to his last release Rock Star in
which he had acted alongside his grand
nephew Ranbir Kapoor, he will regale us forever.
FILM STUDENTS SAY IFFI HAS GIVEN THEM
A PLATFORM TO SHOWCASE TALENT
T. Suresh Kumar, Renu Sawant, Pranjal Dua & Tarun Rakesh
I
t was a good decision on the part
of the IFFI Director Shankar
Mohan to introduce a special section this year on Student Films. So to
express their views the faculty members Sandeep Chatterjee from the
Pune Film Institute of India, V. M.
Raviraj of M.G.R. Government
Film & TV Institute of Tamilnadu,
Subhadro
Chowdhury
of
Kolkatta,like besides students T.
Suresh Kumar, Renu Sawant, Pranjal Dua & Tarun Rakesh interacted
with the media.
The 3 faculty members from the
various institutes across India collectively expressed their opinion that
they were very happy that their student’s films like Karyukai.Inc,
Chuba, Thug Beram, Beauty, Falling
Awake, Airawat , Open Café, Ru
Cube, Tashi Delek , Fish, Karakku,
Mugari, Achupizhai & Patti - Naa
got an overwhelming response from
the media and the delegates, both Indian and foreign. They also expressed their wish that their students
will get more encouragement if like
earlier the national television started
showing their films on a regular basis
and it will be an added boost if the
private channels too followed suit.
Another outlet for showcasing these
films could be its inclusion in theatres before the commencement of
feature films.
The four students gave an insight
about their films apart from being
thankful to the festival director
Shankar Mohan for offering them the
prestigious platform to showcase
their talents in front of the eminent
filmmakers who are attending the ongoing International Film Festival of
India.
