After looking at the opportunities ahead of us in 2012, the board set and prioritized several goals. The Board’s first priority this year is to build membership through meaningful educational opportunities, specifically, information useful for a Contractor’s business efforts. By supporting our Contractors, we build value in attendance and involvement. While we will, of course, continue our hallmark events in 2012, we are planning additional training opportunities as well as a new event to build more bridges between our Associate Members and our Contractor members. To contact members for feedback on what is meaningful, we need to enhance our communication by cleaning up our mailing lists. While this is our second priority, it will be one of the first actions this year. Often, a company will renew membership without updating contact information. As a result, we may unknowingly have outdated information. Our team will call all members to ensure that we have the correct contact person and the current contact information, especially emails. Our third priority is in support of building the value of membership: Education. Training topics discussed include business building strategies from Bill Arman, Masonry, Plants, Soil and Business Regulations. We plan to include several brief training sessions at General Meetings this year. We will be conducting an email survey of members to determine their enthusiasm on a variety of topics. The Board’s fourth priority is to continue to move CLCA into a position of leadership in Sustainability. Our members have much to offer in terms of intelligent use of resources, even beyond the important issue of water. The Board voted to allocate $2,000 to help fund the much needed updates on WUCOLS (Water Use Classifications of Landscape Species). WUCOLS is required by AB 1881 for water budgets. Our final priority is to continue to build industry ties with the ASLA. CLCA San Diego is a sponsor of the ASLA San Diego, as they are of the CLCA. We will continue to support their projects as possible and collaborate with both ASLA and APLD in the Landscape Collaborative group. This year begins with our annual bus charter to LA for the Landscape Industry Show (LIS) on Wednesday, February 1st. For $25, you can miss the traffic, catch up with friends and see the latest industry trends. While you have your calendar out, add Friday, February 10th for our Annual Kick Off. Last year was so much fun we’re doing a replay at the North County Tavern and Bowl. It is a blast even for the non bowler! As for the New Year, Ben Franklin seems to have it right: “Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each New Year find you a better man.” Happy New Year! It’s probably been years since you took your last final exam, or any exam of any sort. Fortunately, there are loads of learning opportunities in store for you at the LIS Show that don’t require an exam! The Landscape Industry Show (LIS) will be reappearing at the Los Angeles Convention Center February 1-2. 2012, of all years, is the one NOT to miss. Not only will the East Bay Chapter’s beloved Ed Laivo be speaking on the landscape uptrend du jour – Fruit Crops of Edible Landscapes, but Cuyamaca College’s Bob Perry, California’s authority on the water needs of plants, will be there. Bob Perry wrote the book, Landscape Plants for California Gardens, an eight-pound gorillapedia of plant information and colorful plant images which many city planners, architects and designers will be relying on as “The Guide” for choosing and approving plans requiring low water plants. While Bob Perry’s seminars normally cost $100 or more to attend, registration at LIS is only $40 -- less if you attend other seminars as well. All your burning and challenging questions regarding Social Media can be fired on Kelly Dixon, an independent marketing consultant. The very popular John Binkele of Ewing re-ups his talk on Professional Selling Skills for the Landscape Contractor. The very chic designer, Billy Goodnick, will help you rock your talk regarding sustainable landscape services. So many other opportunities are on the LIS slate that your down season educational time couldn’t be better spent. Add to your Los Angeles adventure the chance to “speed-date” the landscape universe, touching and feeling your way through exhibits of green walls, a grey water irrigation system, and concrete overlays. Ducking into the Technology Café, you can test run an iPad software product or smart phone app for free, rather than pay money to just “see” or “hear” about it. All in one place you can learn, fee-free and risk-free (and get opinions from your peers) about apps for credit card processing, soil survey data, sprinkler scheduling, a plant reference guide, electronic forms, GPS fleet tracking and language translation. Don’t forget to bring your “electronic brain,” tablet, or smart phone with you. That’s not all. A fun and sweaty Survivor-esque scenario awaits you with the Designer’s Challenge, and a betterthan-Sudoku game, Native Plant Bingo, may appeal. Get your money’s worth from CLCA and attend this unique show, put together by our very hard-working staff and the numerous volunteers whose supreme goal was to make attending worth your while and worth your money! Register for the 2012 Landscape Industry Show (or sign up for a real exam or certification test) at www.clca.us/lis by January 20, for the best deal. The show takes place Wednesday, February 1 and Thursday, February 2 at the biggest contractor cave available to California man – the Los Angeles Convention Center. See you at the show! Holt Blvd., Ontario, CA.
