mission trip to Nicaraqua taken by our lead team. Fr. Steve

someyoungchildrenwedidnotevenknow.Herewewere,agroupof5missionariesreadyto
ventureoffintoaforeignlandnoneofushadevervisitedbefore.Allofuswithdifferent
backgrounds,interestsandprofessionsincludingayounggrandmother,asemi-retiredfederalagent,
ajudge,aformerpoliceof icerandamemberoftheclergy.
Justbeforedusk,aswewatchedabeautifulsunsetfromhighabovetheclouds,ourplanefromMiami
landedinManagua,Nicaragua.Somethingwecouldn’thelpbutimmediatelynoticewasthemid-80
degreetemperaturecomparedtothefrigid2degreesbelowzerowehadleftthatmorninginSt.
Louis.Weweregreetedwithopenarmsandhugsbyourhostfamily(AtanasioandMaritzaNavarro)
readywithtwolargevehiclestotransportussome38kilometerstothesouthwherewewereto
spendthenext3days.
ThepurposeofthismissionwastoconductasitevisitofthecityofSanMarcostogainanunderstanding
ofwhatwasneededmostbyourbrothersandsistersthatcouldmaketheirlivesbetter.Ourgoalwasto
returnhomewithsomeideasforhowSt.PeterParishcouldreachbeyondthebordersofSt.Charles,MO
toprovidethesaltandlighttothepeopleofSanMarcos.
WehadalotofgroundtocoverinjustafewdaysandAtanasioandMaritzalaidoutafullypacked
itinerarywhichincludedmeetingthepastorofthelocalCatholicChurch,theCarmelitenunswho
providealunchprogramfortheschoolchildren,theCatholicuniversityandadaycarecenterthat
providesfor135children,5daysaweek.
Needlesstosay,allofthemcoulduseourhelp.Thepastorhasagrowingparishwiththemainchurch
indisrepair,avillagechapeltoosmallforitscongregationandtheneedforanewchurchinanareaof
thecitythatisexpandingrapidly.Thenunsarebuildingachapelonthegroundsoftheconventand
continuetoseekdonorstosupporttheschoolchildren’slunchprogramthatcosts$2500permonth.
Thedaycarecenterhasaneedforanurse’sstationtocareforchildrenwhogetsickduringtheday
andthecenterhasacapacitytoacceptmorechildrenbuttheirparentscannotaffordthe$12monthly
fee.
ThehighlightofourtripwastoseetheCarmelitenun’seyesandsmilesasweunpackedover70
backpacksthatcontainedschoolsuppliesanddentalhygieneproducts.Allofthemhadbeendonated
bythemembersoftheSt.CharlesRotaryClub.Therewasevenasetofnewpotsandpanstomakeit
easierforthenunstoprepareandservethechildren’slunches.
Asyoumightsuspectthistripchangedthelivesofeachoneofusandwearelookingforwardto
sharingmoreofwhatwediscoveredinSanMarcos.

WHAT IF IT HAPPENED TO US? We hope it never happens, but it could
and it has other places. It happened in Joplin and Oklahoma City; it
happened in Sandy Hook. What would you/we do if there was as fire that
started during mass, or if a tornado hit, or if some deranged person
entered the church or our school with a weapon? We need to be
prepared. We need to know what to do. Do we evacuate or shelter in
place? We need to have people who are willing to help. We need a plan.
I mentioned a couple weeks ago that we are working on a disaster plan for St. Peter Parish.
David Yackey, Dotty Nieweg, Tom Boschert and myself attended the Faith-Based Disaster
Planning Workshop two weeks ago. We gained valuable insight into what can happen and
what we need to do to prepare, as best we can, for when a disaster occurs; and it will happen
sometime.
I have begun the process of developing a disaster plan for St. Peter Church. I need your help
in developing this very important and comprehensive plan. I am working on putting together a
“core” group; 5 or 6 individuals to work with me to design the plan and to organize teams that
will be activated when, not if, a major disaster/emergency occurs. To help this core group, and
me I would like to initially identify people who may possess important skills that we can call
upon to be members of specific teams. To begin this task I would like to collect a list of
individuals in our parish who are: doctors, nurses, or other health professionals; law
enforcement officers, firemen, EMTs, and past military who have training in emergency
response. Please contact me if you are willing to help. In the near future, we will be seeking
others who possess other skills and special abilities to be members of other teams that we will
form. We will provide additional information and instructions as we progress in this effort. At a
time still to be determined we will also be conducting evacuation drills at the end of masses, so
parishioners, ushers, and others will know what to do if it is ever necessary to do an
evacuation. You will be given plenty of advanced notice before the drill occurs.

Wapelhorst and Miss Boerding for planning Grandparents Day, Mrs. Taylor and the
sixth graders for the lovely Mass, the fourth grade mothers for the delightful

Families currently receiving the scholarship need not reapply

scholarship
Who can apply? Any new student entering kindergarten
through 4th grade and any student currently attending a Catholic
elementary school.
What is the amount awarded? The maximum award per child
is $2,000/year and the minimum award per child is $1,000/year.
Where do I apply? Contact the school office for an application,
or contact the Today and Tomorrow Educational Foundation at

January 26, 2014 at www.archstl.org/ttef.
When can I apply? Applications will be accepted on and after
