From the Pastor ~
This past week we had a very large and destructive snow
storm, and let's be honest, it was far too early for
snow! Yet, in the midst of that storm many families and
parishioners worked hard to help those in need,
especially those without power or heat. I thank all of you
who took the time and made the effort to help others
during this storm. When you help another in need you
live your baptism, the call of Jesus Christ to love one
another as he has loved us.
This weekend our parish is host to a wonderful and joyful
occasion, the wedding of Kevin Halloran and his bride
Laura Brannon. We only have a few weddings each
year, and this wedding is especially joyful, as the
Halloran family have been parishioners for many years,
and I remember when Kevin made his confirmation, as I
was his teacher! Now he and Laura begin their lives
together as husband and wife. Wow do I feel
old! Congratulations to Kevin and Laura. May God bless
everyday of your lives together.
This Thursday November 10th at 1:30 PM we will hold a
special prayer service and program in the Charbonneau
Activity Center here at the parish in honor of our
Veterans.
Please join our students in saluting the
American Flag, singing patriotic songs, and offering
prayers for Veterans both living and deceased.
Students will make a presentation to all attending
Veterans. We hope you can join us for this special time.
We thank all of our veterans for their service in defense
of our nation. God Bless you now and always.
Please consider taking an hour of adoration before the
Blessed Sacrament, as we have several hours
open. Thank you for your commitment to prayer for our
parish family.
In Christ,
Fr. Stephen M. Gemme

Slowly read Holy Scripture until something hits you. Then listen.
Say a rosary.
Let God look at you.
Tell Him something that made you happy. Then listen.
Tell Him what you are afraid of. Then listen.
Tell Him what angers you. Then listen.
Speak about your loved ones.
Pray for an enemy.
Talk with Him about work.
Sing a song for Him in your heart.
Promise to trust Him.
Imagine Mary sitting next to you and praying with you.
Renew your loyalty to His Church.
Lean on Him. Tell Him you love Him.
Thank Him for the Sacraments.
Tell him your failures. Ask for help. Then listen.
Slowly recite the Beatitudes.
Say the Our Father slowly.
Say the Hail Mary slowly.
Say the Creed slowly.
Pray for vocations.
Ask Him to show you the next step.
Look at yourself. Count your gifts. Then thank God.
Pray for the world.
Enjoy being in His presence.
During Eucharistic Adoration and through our prayers, we watch
and wait; we remain silent in His presence and open ourselves
to His graces which flow from the Eucharist. Intimacy with the
Lord in Eucharistic Adoration can deepen our awareness of just
how much God loves us and how we respond to that love.

Altar Society Ministry Needs Your Help!
The Altar Society Ministry members are responsible for cleaning
and preparing the church for weekend services. No one is
asked to work beyond his or her capabilities. You can expect to
work in small groups for 2 hours (usually Saturday mornings)
once every 2 months. The ministry is made up of
individuals, couples and families. We hope you will
consider serving in this ministry. For more information
or to volunteer, please contact Rose or Walter
Zydlewski at 508-485-7683.
St. Catherine of Siena’s Dialogue on Divine Providence
How good and how delightful is your spirit, Lord, in all men!
The eternal Father, indescribably kind and tender, turned his eye to this soul and spoke to her thus:
‘O dearest daughter, I have determined to show my mercy and loving kindness to the world, and I choose to provide for
mankind all that is good. But man, ignorant, turns into a death-giving thing what I gave in order to give him life. Not only
ignorant, but cruel: cruel to himself. But still I go on providing. For this reason I want you to know: whatever I give to
man, I do it out of my great providence.
‘So it was that when, by my providence, I created man, I looked into myself and fell in love with the beauty of the
creature I had made – for it had pleased me, in my providence, to create man in my own image and likeness.
‘Moreover, I gave man memory, to be able to remember the good things I had done for him and to be able to share in
my own power, the power of the eternal Father.
‘Moreover, I gave man intellect, so that, seeing the wisdom of my Son, he could recognise and understand my own will;
for I am the giver of all graces and I give them with a burning fatherly love.
‘Moreover, I gave man the desire to love, sharing in the tenderness of the Holy Spirit, so that he might love the things
that his intellect had understood and seen.
‘But my kind providence did all this solely that man might be able to understand me and enjoy me, rejoicing in my vision
for all eternity. And as I have told you elsewhere, the disobedience of your first parent Adam closed heaven to you – and
from that disobedience came all evil through the whole world.
‘To relieve man of the death that his own disobedience had brought, I tenderly and providently gave you my onlybegotten Son to heal you and bring satisfaction for your needs. I gave him the task of being supremely obedient, to free
the human race of the poison that your first parent’s disobedience had spread throughout the world. Falling in love, as it
were, with his task, and truly obedient, he hurried to a shameful death on the most holy Cross. By his most holy death he
gave you life: not human life this time, but with the strength of his divinity.’

St. Bernadette School News
School has been in session for nine weeks. Certainly the weather has made its best attempt at
providing us with a full range of climate changes!
From shorts and air conditioning to winter outerwear and turning on the heat, our biggest surprise was last night’s
measurable snowfall. It is appropriate that the Summer uniform is
replaced with the full dress uniform beginning Monday, October 31.
Last week we kicked off the annual Magazine Drive, a
major fundraiser that helps bridge the $1,300 difference between
tuition and the actual per pupil expenditure necessary to educate a
student at St. Bernadette School. The eighth grade completed their
“Mixed Bag” fundraiser for their annual trip to Washington, DC and
are absolutely delighted to report that sales totaled more than
$6,100, yielding $3,000+ for the trip. Last Saturday’s “Parents Night
Out” featuring wine, beer and tastings from many local restaurants
was a wonderful opportunity to gather and enjoy the great company
of fellow parents and friends. Thank you for the many ways in
which you support St. Bernadette School students and help
strengthen our community.
After school activities are in full swing as the Cross Country team prepares for tomorrow’s “All Catholic Meet” at Lake Ave.
Park in Worcester where more than 230 students from Catholic
schools in the Worcester Diocese and Immaculate Conception
School in Marlboro will run the 1.8 mile course. The team’s season
will close with an event in Tewksbury next weekend. Basketball
season is gearing up, sports clinics continue and the Outreach Club
traveled to the Coleman House for a Halloween party with residents. The band can be heard practicing lessons every Friday afternoon. A master calendar is necessary to manage the demands on
the physical space as so many students pursue their varied interests. Thank you to all the volunteers who make it all possible!
The eighth graders had a marathon two days of Terra
Nova testing last week. Many of the boys will have another tomorrow as they take the entrance exam for St. John’s High School. The
high school application process is well underway and public
schools in several districts are holding information sessions for our
Class of 2012 students who may make up their future Class of
2016.
Marks closed today for the first quarter. First Quarter Report cards will be issued next Friday and emailed to each family.
Parent-Teacher conference days will be held November 17 and 18.
Deborah O’Neil and Julianne Morin
Christmas will be here soon!
This year, we will be selling our own St. Bernadette
Christmas card! Prices are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00

November 9: Being a Blessing
With Thanksgiving this month we typically recall and reflect
upon all the good things in our lives for which we are grateful.
One of these gifts we may overlook, however, is the blessing
we ourselves are to others.
The beautiful indoor crèche, here at St. Bernadette is displayed
on our very own Christmas card. You will be able to view the
card this weekend in the gathering space. Cards can be purchased next weekend after all Masses or in the Pastoral Center

Anima Christi
Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me.
Blood of Christ, inebriate me.
Water from the side of Christ, wash me.
Passion of Christ, strengthen me.
O good Jesus, hear me.
Within your wounds conceal me.
Do not permit me to be parted from you.
From the evil foe protect me.
At the hour of my death call me.
And bid me come to you,
to praise you with all your saints
for ever and ever.
Amen.
En ego, o bone et dulcissime Iesu
Here,
O good and gentle Jesus,
I kneel before you,
and with all the fervor of my soul
I pray that you engrave within my heart
lively sentiments of faith, hope, and love,
true repentance for my sins,
and a firm purpose of amendment.
While I see and I ponder your five wounds
with great affection and sorrow in my soul,
I have before my eyes those words of yours
that David prophesied about you:
"They have pierced my hands and feet;
I can count all my bones." (Ps 22, 17)
Amen.
"Legatus is Back in Boston!"
Cardinal O’Malley has invited Legatus, the international organization of Catholic business leaders and spouses, to relaunch
the Boston chapter. If you are, or were, a business owner, CEO,
President, Managing Director, or Managing Partner, Legatus of
Boston invites you and your spouse to dinner with featured
speaker Mr. Thomas Monaghan, Founder of Domino’s Pizza
and Ave Maria University, at the Weston Golf Club in Weston,
MA, on Wednesday, November 17th. For more information,
please contact Gerard Marino at (781) 369-5048 or
email: LegatusBoston@gmail.com
Legatus, Latin for "ambassador," is the only organization in the
world designed for top-ranking Catholic business leaders. This
organization is the conduit connecting two powerful realities, the
challenge of top-tier business leadership and a religious tradition
second to none. Legatus provides its members the opportunity
to deepen their relationship with God and discover how Catholic
truth and values can help them meet the ethical challenges
faced on a daily basis. Spouses are full members, providing
additional opportunities to enhance marriage and family life.
Monthly meetings start with Mass, followed by socializing and
fine dining - complemented by dynamic and informative presentations by expert regionally or nationally known speakers.
"The world needs genuine witnesses to Christian ethics, and the
Church asks you to fulfill this role publicly and with perseverance." - Pope John Paul II in an address to Legatus members.
The Mighty Macs
By Joseph McAleer
Catholic News Service
NEW YORK (CNS) -- "The Mighty Macs" (Freestyle) is the factbased story of a women's basketball team from a Catholic
college who, through the grit and determination of their rookie
coach, got a shot at the national title.
This old-fashioned, family-friendly film is "Sister Act" without the
singing, "Rocky" with basketballs, and "The Trouble with Angels"
with Ellen Bursytn in the Rosalind Russell role of the mother
superior.
The year is 1972, the feminist movement is picking up steam,
and change is in the air. For Cathy Rush (Carla Gugino), 23 and
recently married, this means searching for a role to play beyond
that of dutiful housewife to her husband, Ed (David Boreanaz). A
star basketball player herself, Cathy missed out on her own
chance for glory, as her college eliminated the sport.
Against Ed's wishes, Cathy takes a job at Pennsylvania's
Immaculata College (now University), run by the Congregation of
the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The stern
mother superior, Mother St. John (Bursytn), has no time for
sports; she's trying to keep the school afloat, fighting off appeals
from the board and the church to close its doors. Impatient and
irritable, she gives Cathy free rein to build a team from scratch.
This is Cathy's big chance and, although not a Catholic, she is
determined to fit in and succeed, inspiring a ragtag group of girls
to become a fighting force by believing in themselves. They
practice despite not having a court, with improvised uniforms
fashioned from nuns' smocks.
Cathy's faith never wavers, as she hands out "We Will Be #1"
buttons all over town. Help arrives in the form of the youngest
nun, Sister Sunday (Marley Shelton). Like Cathy, she is
struggling with her vocation, trying to find her place in a
traditional world. She also shares an interest in basketball. The
two bond, and Sister Sunday becomes the assistant coach,
drawing out the older nuns to cheer the team on at games.
Against all odds, the "Macs" of Immaculata College make their
way to their sport's first-ever national championship game. Cathy
not only saves herself and her marriage, but the fortunes of the
college -- melting the cold heart of Mother St. John in the
process.
Directed by newcomer Tim Chambers, "The Mighty Macs" is a
feel-good movie offering lessons in friendship, teamwork, trust
and perseverance. For the most part, Catholicism is treated with
respect, but it serves more as a colorful backdrop than a source
for commentary.
Sister Sunday provides some harmless comic relief. She lends
Cathy a habit so they can qualify for free tickets on United
Airlines. ("Second nun flies for free.")
Explaining her call to the religious life, Sister Sunday expresses
her love for Jesus. "That whole Cana thing?" she observes,
"Jesus just wanted everyone to have a good time."
The entire family will have a good time at "The Mighty Macs."
The Catholic News Service classification is A-I -- general

Welcome to St. Bernadette Parish
Thank you for joining us in the celebration of the
Mass! It is our sincere wish to welcome you to
our parish. If you are new to our parish or to the
Catholic faith, we are honored to have you with
us. Registration packets are available in the
Gathering Space of the Church and at the
Pastoral Center Office or by calling 508-393-2838.
Please feel free to ask any questions about our
Church.
Frequently, those seeking to celebrate Marriage, Baptism or
serve as sponsors for Confirmation or Baptism request a letter
stating that they are active parishioners. To receive such a letter
one must be registered in the parish, attend Mass regularly and
be committed to stewardship of time, talent & treasure. One
means of verifying participation is through the use of parish
offertory envelopes. If you choose not to participate in the
support of the parish, or are unable to contribute at this time,
please note your prayerful support on your envelope and place
it in the weekly offertory. We will then be aware of your
continued participation, and you will not be noted as “inactive”
on our roster. To request envelopes, contact the parish office at
508-393-2838.
