The City recently contracted with GeoMarket Solutions, Inc., to provide an updated demographic and spending analysis for the City. ESRI’s Business Analyst software was utilized to study a set of economic factors for the City. Findings from this report show the great opportunities for business success in Harker Heights. The City has processed 2,798 residential permits since 2003. A breakdown of residential permits by year is presented in this table: YEAR PERMITS 2003-2004 724 2005-2006 1185 2007 329 2008 226 2009 177 2010 to date 165 These figures do not include the rapid growth within the City of Killeen with which the City of Harker Heights shares a common boundary. All told, the City of Harker Heights population is now in excess of 27,600. Combined with the City of Killeen, the population served by commercial centers within Harker Heights exceeds 140,000. The City of Harker Heights has strategically located, developable commercial lots. These lots offer unique opportunities for your business to reach this large, and growing population. The City has experienced historic residential growth. BOOMING COMMERCIAL INTEREST The City of Harker Heights is witnessing a historic period of commercial interest in the City. Direct Development Chooses Harker Heights Direct Development is currently developing a 650,000 plus square foot retail center within the City of Harker Heights. This development covers 80 acres of land and will be anchored by a Target store. Key retailers include Barnes and Noble, Dicks Sporting Goods, Cracker Barrel, Cheddars, and Razzoo’s Cajun Café among others. Cinemark was the first business to open within the complex in May of 2008. Target and other stores are scheduled for an opening in July of 2008. The City has quality municipal water infrastructure and ample raw water supplies. The City’s wastewater network is also of high quality and the City’s wastewater treatment plant has adequate capacity. The City builds and maintains an efficient network of roads. The City has also worked closely with the Texas Department of Transportation to make improvements to state roads that traverse the City. The City has developed master plans to help guide infrastructure capital improvements into the future. The City has also worked closely with private utility providers such as Oncor, CenturyLink, Time Warner Cable, and Atmos to ensure that the services provided by these utilities are adequate for the amount of growth that has and will occur within Harker Heights.
