Dear Parents,
Last week I shared with you Rudyard Kipling’s poem “If”. In doing this we indentified
some core values which are central to growing up as a person of morality and
purpose. This week we can build on this them by reading from a document put out by
the Catholic Life Marriage & Family Centre.

This reading entitled “The Good Man”, gives further insights into the idea of what
makes a good citizen and a person of values. These are goals that St Paul’s Catholic
College seeks to develop in the young men who come to this school. They are the

Joseph of Nazareth was a real man who lived a life completely in the service of others.
As the protector and guardian of Jesus and Mary he revealed how love goes beyond
sex.
Joseph was a man whose actions spoke louder than words and who constantly trusted
in God despite the difficulties of the many circumstances that life threw at him: the initial
humiliation of discovering that his betrothed was pregnant; the confusion following visits
from angels; the forced journey to Bethlehem at the demands of a cruel imperial ruler;
the desperation of not being able to properly provide for his wife in her labour; feelings of
insecurity and displacement and fleeing across borders; dire warnings from angels, magi
and Temple prophets, and the disappearance of the Christ child when he was twelve
years old. Joseph was a man who was very familiar with the dramas of family life.
Today just like Joseph, men are subjected to various stresses and strains and often feel
less in control than they would ever want to be; they too can struggle to meet the
responsibilities to family which seem so inextricably linked to being a man; they too can
feel distraught for the ‘lost” child or fear the humiliation that looms from being a limited
provider or an inadequate guardian. But St Joseph shows the way ahead for every
Christian man; trust in God and devotion to the Blessed Virgin. He reveals to every man,
husband and father how they can become more like the man that God wants them to be.

All men in one way or another belong also to the world of work. Men can use their talents
along with the gifts of creation, to mould and culturally enrich the world in which they live.
Work is not merely an incidental activity for men. Jesus often referred to the world of
work in his parables: he spoke of shepherds, farmers, fisherman, merchants, labourers,
and householders. Through and in his work every Christian man is expected to give of
his best. While at the workbench with his foster father, Jesus too experienced what it
meant to be a man engaged in human work. In a special way, he blessed work and took
it up into the mystery of the self-sacrificing story that we now know as the Christ event.

Assistant Principal’s Report
Dear Parents,
Year 7 Ski Trip
Last week I attended the Ski Trip with Year 7 and what a fantastic week it was. I
congratulate all students for the way they conducted themselves throughout the week
and the great enthusiasm with which they took to learning how to ski. I thank Mr Scott
Fitzsimmons for his excellent organisation of the trip and the assistance provided by
Mrs Vicki Broome, Ms Michelle White, Mr Dane Mackay and Mr Lionel Newton.
Additionally I thank the parents who attended and assisted throughout the week, Mr
Roger Gall, Mr Guy Fleming and Mr Dara Johnston.
College and Co-curricular Photographs – Week 5 – 15th and 16th August
In Week 5 we have the College photos on Wednesday 15th August and Co-curricular photos on Thursday 16th August. I
ask for the support of all parents to ensure your sons are suitably groomed on these days, in particular with hair cut and
brushed, and clean-shaven for the senior students. Additionally students will need to ensure shoes are polished, black
belts are worn and the top button fastened on their shirt. This will save the embarrassment of any students needing to be
excluded from group photos on the day.
Waratah Shield Quarter Final
Our First XV rugby team has done a fantastic job by winning the Waratah Cup last week which has put them into the
quarter final of the Waratah Shield. To make the top 8 of a state-wide competition with 123 teams competing is a great
effort. I congratulate the boys and their coach, Mr Christopher Boylan, who has been assisted by Mr Antony Charles. The
quarter final will be played against St Augustine’s College at 3pm next Tuesday 7th August at Pittwater Rugby Park.
Those boys who have represented the College in rugby this year are invited to attend as supporters. Ms Fiona Stuart has
sent out a note with the finer details.
Japanese Visitors
This week the College has been lucky enough to have two sets of visitors from
Japan. One group from Waseda and the other from Odawara who joined them last
Friday. Our students are very lucky to have the opportunity to mix with boys from
other cultures and I thank Mrs Liberty Campbell and Mrs Amanda Kibby for the
huge amount of work they do to provide such opportunities for our school
community.

We have received word that Josh, from last year’s Year 12 cohort is quite ill and currently in hospital. I ask that all families
pray for Josh in the hope of a speedy recovery.

Student Achievements
Basketball at it’s best!
Year 11 student, Max Chipchase represented the Manly Warringah Representative U18 Men’s
Division 1 Representative Basketball team in the Grand Final of the Waratah Junior Metro League
Basketball Competition held last weekend in Penrith. The team were runners up.
His team will now compete in the Waratah Junior State Championships at Terrigal this weekend. Well
done & good luck Max!
St Paul’s congratulates ex-student on InTech Exhibition display
Congratulations to former St Paul’s student, Nicholas Adams, on having his Industrial Technology
Timber project included in the prestigious InTech Exhibition for outstanding Industrial Technology
Projects from the 2011 Higher School Certificate.
The InTech Exhibition was held at the ‘Timber and Working with Wood Show’ at Sydney Olympic Park
last month.
Nicholas produced a sideboard cabinet inspired by an
existing custom-made entertainment unit he owns. “One of
the most challenging and impressive elements of the project was the
construction of the 3-way compound mitre joints found on the top four corners.
This method of joinery was extremely challenging and demonstrated Nick’s fine
craftsmanship,” explained Andrew Banham, TAS/VET teacher at St Paul’s.
“His project and management folio were outstanding, rewarding him with a
Band 6 for this subject, the highest ranking in an HSC subject.”

ST PAUL’S COCKTAIL PARTY
‘a night not to be missed!’
In next week’s newsletter you will find an invitation to the P&F Annual Cocktail Party to
be held on Friday 7th September at Manly Golf Club.
Tickets will go on sale from Monday 13th August—just complete the slip at the
bottom of the flyer and return to school.
This year we have an EARLY BIRD price of $35 per person. Excellent value as it
includes gourmet food, free drink on arrival, an extra drink voucher and live music. A
saving of $10 per couple if you buy your tickets before Friday August 24th, so get in quick!
We are very excited this year to be holding the Cocktail Party at Manly Golf Club – one of Manly’s best local venues, the
beautiful historic building (just up the road from Manly Swim Centre) overlooking the prestigious Manly Golf Course.
This is our only social function for the year, it doesn’t involve any fundraising, just a chance to get together so put the
date in your diary, dust off your dancing shoes, pull out your party gear and join us to make this a fantastic St Paul’s
community event. You won’t be disappointed!

St Paul’s First XV Rugby Union team take on the UK tourists
The Olympic spirit was clearly on display at Manly Oval last Thursday 26th July when St Paul’s first XV rugby union team
took on UK visitors from Crossley-Heath Grammar.
The game started out fiercely as the tourists looked to assert themselves against a willing St Paul’s side.
“It wasn’t long before a red and black blaze descended on the village green as our forward pack set up a dominant
platform allowing our backs to carve up the Brits,” said Christopher Boylan, St Paul’s rugby coach. “Early on the tries
flowed with the Schmaukel brothers Latrell and Otto, Matt Thomas and Luke Gosling (Captain) crashing through turnstile
tackling from the Crossley-Heath players.”
St Pauls went on to dominate the first half with 33 unanswered points leaving the tourists with no option but lick their
wounds and collectively soothe their battered egos.
“The second half saw the tourists come out defending as if the Battle of Britain itself had morphed into rugby union,”
laughs Boylan. “The Brits plied the pressure and attacked our flanks scoring several deserving tries leaving our boys
bewildered to defend against the incoming swarm of defeat.”
St Paul’s were taken aback by the strength of attack from Crossley-Heath. On full time Crossley-Heath scored and tied
the game up 33-33. A friendly match quite fittingly ending with a friendly draw which set the tone for new friendships to be
made as the Crossley-Heath team went on to enjoy the billeting hospitality of their St Paul’s rivals before continuing their
Australian tour.

Year 7 Ski Trip
In the words of our Year 7 students...
What happened on the Year 7 ski trip can only be described in one word “AWESOME!” and that word means a lot and it says a lot
too for the students and the staff that went there with us. That’s because everyone had such great fun, us students had fully
participated in lessons and just very, very few students got sick or injuries. On the slopes, we had lessons and we had free skiing
times that let us ski with our friends. And back at the lodges, we play pool and table tennis to take the boredom out of us and we
also watched movies. So that means that we had no time to waste because there is so much to do day and night. The food was
also very good because on breakfast we had bacon, egg, toast and cereals. For lunch, we also had quite a lot of choices and for
dinner, we had steak, nachos and roast lamb and some desserts. Everyone had such great fun and it is probably the most
unforgettable trip in our lives in high school. And I think that you might already know that.

Last week Year 7 went to Thredbo for three whole days of skiing and being in the snow, what a great experience this was. It all
started at 8am; boarding the coach I felt a huge surge of energy inside me. I was on the bus, the engine rattles and the bus starts.
We are leaving, Thredbo here we come. After hours of what seemed like endless driving we all heard the pleasing sound "We are
here". Clambering off the bus we find ourselves at our lodges. Once we had been sorted we all head to our cabins to unpack.
After we are all warm and cosy in our rooms we have dinner and talk about the snowfields tomorrow and head of to bed for a
ealry awakening tomorrow. At 6am sharp the door opens, "GET UP" is yelled and the door slammed shut again, well I guess the
teachers have a great reason to say that to our cabin. I mean they probably got little sleep at all. Breakfast was first on schedule,
we finish breakfast rush for the bus and of we go, we are on our way to the snow. As we get closer and closer we see more and
more snow, then that last turn we see it all. The Mountain ranges are covered top to bottom with snow. Skiing lessons start, first
few runs nothing turned out well, all that was happening was I was trying and failing. Well I guess practice makes perfect. After
lessons we had lunch, lunch only lasted half an hour because everyone was so keen to get back on the mountain. After a little
more skiing we were all sadly dragged off the slopes and onto the bus. Everyone was longing for the next day. Same old same
old "GET UP" was yelled, except this time we all jumped out of bed because we all knew that the snow was so much fun. After
Breakfast we jumped of the bus and headed for the slopes. After the lessons lunch was held again and then we went to the
slopes again. As everyone thought the day was just going to get better and better we were wrong. Time had flied while having fun
and we had to leave getting on the bus again we ventured back to our lodges for dinner and a briefing on what was happening
tomorrow. A movie was held after dinner and then it was time to go to bed. Yes you guessed it, "GET UP" was yelled, breakfast
was had and off we went. Reaching the snow today everyone was both happy and sad, we are at the snow but sadly it was our
last day, well surely everyone made that last day count. Two hours skiing followed by lunch and then followed by three hours
skiing, it was great. By the end of the days everyone was exhausted. We made our final farewell to the snow and then of we
travelled back to Jindabyne. Overall everyone had improved dramatically and we all enjoyed it. The following day the endless
drive began again we travelled back to Manly, ending our trip with a weekends worth of rest from the extremely tiring and fun
week. It was definitely my best experience at St Paul’s College this year, and I bet everyone else's too.

Year 7 Ski Trip
We left on Monday for the snow as we embarked on the long journey down the highway you could feel the excitement throughout
the coach. We stopped at Suttons Forest for some McDonalds, and we were there for about an hour. We left Suttons Forest for
another 5 hours on the highway. After a long trip we got to Cooma and had some time to stretch our legs. We hit the road again
and before you know it were got to Jindabyne. We went to ALI where we were staying, we had a chat with the group and then we
all got our hire gear sorted out. We then went to our rooms had some dinner and then went to bed. First day was an early rise for
breakfast and then out the door into the coaches for a long day of skiing. Most people were first time skiers but we all had some
fun and plenty of stacks. Second day was another early rise for breakfast and then we hit the slopes again. Everyone was feeling
better about their skiing and still having heaps of fun but still plenty of hard stacks. Last day on the slopes here we go. We had
another early rise for breakfast before we hit the slopes. There was plenty of snow and plenty of fun and almost no stacks, and by
far the best day of the week. On behalf of Year 7 we would like to say thank you to the teachers and dads that helped us out on
the trip.

The Year 7 Ski camp was awesome! We all had so much fun. It was all good from accommodation to the skiing. Our
accommodation was at Bungarra Alpine Center near Jindabyne. We stayed in Firmin and Alpha lodges. The Firmin lodge was the
main lodge where dinner was held and Alpha was down the bottom. Dinner was at 6:15 pm every night, before dinner we had the
chance to talk to our friends, play pool, ping pong or just relax. After dinner we had a quick meeting on what we were doing the
next day and then we all sat down and watch a movie. Lights out was around 9-9:30pm. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
we were on the slopes skiing at Thredbo. Thredbo is about a 30 minute drive from Bungarra. There were 2 places where we could
ski. They were Friday Flats for beginners and then there was Merits for the more intermediate skiers. There were heaps of runs to
ski on throughout Thredbo. Tuesday we had skiing lessons in the morning then about an hour of free skiing then we had lunch.
After lunch we had some more lessons until 3:30 then we went back to Bungarra. Wednesday we had a lesson in the morning
until lunchtime again but after lunch we had to buddy up with 4 people and then it was free ski until 3:30pm. We did this exact
same thing on Thursday as well. The Ski Trip was awesome so thank you to the teachers for organising this wonderful camp, it
was loads of fun!

Japanese News
Waseda Arrives!
Term 3 has started with a Japanese flavour as we welcome our sister school Waseda. They are staying with 19 of our St
Paul’s families for 10 days. The Waseda visitors have been studying English as well as taking in some of the local sights.
We have also enjoyed having them join us in some of our Japanese lessons. Year 10 were the first class to meet them
and they did their best giving a tour of the school in Japanese. They then paired up with the Waseda boys to do a bilingual
quiz about Australian animals and the local area. I believe our boys learnt as much from the lesson as the Waseda
students though. For example, did you know that a kangaroo can jump 3 metres or that a quoll has up to 6 siblings?
Later in the day, some Year 8 and 9 students joined a lesson with the Waseda boys to introduce Australian snacks. The
favour was returned when the visitors introduced some popular Japanese treats to Year 8. Handball at recess between
our boys and the visitors has also been a great way to bridge the language gap.
We look forward to the rest of the week with the friendly Waseda students and their teachers.
Year 10 News
I can not speak highly enough of the Year 10 Japanese class this year. Last term they impressed me with their teaching
skills during an assessment task that required them to teach their peers a grammatical structure. The quality of their
preparation though was beyond even my expecations with class highlights including a rap song recorded by Toby Perks
and Jamie Crawford, and Nic White’s lesson which showed he really has inherited some of his mother’s teaching skills.
The class voted on whose lesson they felt was both interesting and had taught them the most. The quality of feedback that
they gave their peers showed great maturity and their teaching skills had matched many university students on their first
teaching practicum that I have observed. Well done Year 10. The following boys enjoyed a reward Japanese lunch for
receiving full marks on the assessment or being voted the best lesson: Toby Perks, Jamie Crawford, Nic White, Luke
Richardson, Ninja Nett and Ben McVean.
Tokimeki Cup
On Tuesday evening, Year 10 students competed at Manly Council in the Interschool
Japanese Speech Contest known as the Tokimeki Cup. This is the 10th Anniversary of the
contest, so the event was attended by members of Odawara City Council and the visiting
Odawara students, as well as parents and members of Manly Sister Cities Committee.
Five students were selected from Year 10 to represent St Paul’s including Ben Lyon, Ben
McVean, Ninja Nett, Toby Perks and Jamie Crawford. The boys performed well taking
out the Team Award as well as 3rd place in the individual section for Ben McVean’s
performance. The boys were also impressive in the way they presented themselves
supporting each team member throughout the contest. Well done boys.

EARTH SCIENCE WEEK 2012—Rock and Camera Roll!
Geoscience Australia and the Australian Science Teachers Association invite Australian school students
to celebrate Earth Science Week 2012 (14 – 20 October) by submitting a short film, up to three minutes
long, which relates to Geoscience or Earth Science and people.
What to do?
To enter, students need to make a film that relates to one of the following themes:
• Observable changes in the landscape as a result of natural process or human activity
• Natural hazards – earthquakes, tsunami, landslides or volcanoes
• Rocks, minerals and fossils, the rock cycle
• Geological history – geological changes and events over time, plate tectonics
• Local geology – what’s in your backyard?
• Satellite imagery and mapping
• Renewable and non-renewable resources
• Famous geologists, important Earth Science discoveries and current issues
Entries can be submitted by an individual, class or group in one of the three age divisions:
• Primary
• Secondary (up to Year 10)
• Senior Secondary (Years 11 and 12)
Entries can be in any style or combination of styles. Possibilities include:
• Animation or claymation
• Documentary
• Musical
• Adventure
• News report or interview
• Mobile phone production.

What’s happening in Food Technology?
As part of their Food Technology project, Year 7 students have been producing food which is to be photographed and
placed on their Recipe Cards. This week Students cooked a Gnocchi Amatriciana. They have enjoyed the practical
aspects that go along with both the kitchen and computers as part of their weekly routine.

Year 11 Food Technology have been studying food availability and selection. As part of their studies, they prepared
a chicken and prawn paella in recognition of the Spanish influence on Australian cuisine.

Musicians Corner
Singing Workshop comes to St Paul’s
Last Thursday 26th July, selected students from St Paul’s attended
a 2-hour singing workshop with Simone Mastroianni, a talented
singing teacher from the Northern Beaches. Simone also happens
to be the daughter of Ms Anna Nero from the front office. Those
who have been involved in the College for a period of time may
remember Simone from one of our Year in Review concerts.
The students learnt three pieces; “Stand by me”, “I’m Yours”, and
“Lean on Me”. Everyone had a great time, learnt new vocal
techniques and conquered some fears about singing in front of their
peers. Students who attended the Singing Workshop were: Mackenzie Bell, Adam Smith, Shane Joyce, Eric Ah-Kam,
Jake Patterson, Anders Almers, Daniel Villarreal, Josh Brannon, Jack Van Vliet, Taka Ofa, Shane McCarthy, Ben
Stanford.
HSC Trials
On Monday 30th July seven students sat their HSC trial music examinations with a considerable improvement shown in
both their practical and aural tests. With just under five weeks until their HSC practical exam I wish the boys the best after
all their hard work.
Big Band
On Monday 27th August the St Paul’s College Big Band and Jazz Group will tour the Northern Beaches performing three
concerts at various Catholic primary schools. Can I ask parents to monitor their son’s practice for the next four weeks so
we can really put on some great shows.
Rehearsals are Monday 3:30pm—Jazz Group and Wednesday 7:45am—Big Band
It is imperative that ALL students attend every rehearsal.

Social Justice News
UPDATE: Social Justice Immersion Tour
Cambodia 2012
The Social Justice Tour to Cambodia in November is fast
approaching and our Years 11 and 12 students have been
busy raising funds for Tabitha Foundation Australia for
people living in extreme poverty. St Paul’s College would
like to thank Doug and Bernadette Freeman for the
AFL box tickets, which sold this week for $3000. At
this Sunday evening’s Family Mass, our students will also
receive a $2,000 cheque from the Manly Freshwater Parish. We would like to thank all those parents who gave
some amazing prizes and in particular Sokee Westcott
for all her hard work selling these tickets and promoting our cause at their Christmas in July celebration
and at the end of Mass. Our goal is to raise $20,000 for Tabitha. We are still $3,500 short of this goal.
We are holding a ’Movie and Bite’ night on Thursday 16th August at 6:30pm, screening the movie “The Killing Fields”.
Tickets are $25 and will include light snacks and a drink. A children’s movie will be screening in the IRC and tickets are
only $10. A raffle will be held on the night with prizes including, chocolate, wine and an overnight stay at the Mecure
Hotel for 2.

Second-hand Textbook Trading System. List these books for sale now, and they will be the
first to sell at the busy end of year trading (Ads last 12 months).

The Uniform Shop hours are 8:30am–10am Mondays
and Wednesdays. The only uniform items that can be
purchased from Student Reception on any other day
are socks and ties. School socks have arrived and
all sizes are now available from the Uniform Shop.
The Principal can only grant a maximum of 15 school
days leave in a school year for compulsory school age
children, if more than 15 days leave parent(s) must
arrange to meet with the Principal, Mr Mark Baker, by
contacting his secretary Ms Judy Longrigg on 9977 5111.
Leave should only be granted for unforeseen events. If
you are going on holidays you must apply for an
exemption.
MUSIC—Percussion Band
Procedure for Absent Students
Please contact the College Office on 9977 5111 by
10am to advise the Office Staff if your son is not
attending school. A note must be given to your son’s
PC teacher on his return to school.
Students in Years 7 to 9 who are interested in becoming
part of the College Percussion Band please contact

College fees). Lessons are on Tuesdays at 10:50am–
11:50am, providing students arrive on time.

MUSIC—Big Band
Big Band rehearsals are held on Wednesdays at 7:45am
in DM3. Please see Mr James Bresnahan for more

MUSIC—Senior Jazz Ensemble
Term 3 accounts were due on 27th July. Your
cooperation to settle your accounts by the due date is
much appreciated. Please contact the College Bursar if
you need to discuss your account.
Senior Jazz Group is held on Mondays at 3:30pm–
4:30pm in DM3. Please see Mr David Kemp for more
information.
Study Club
Maths Club
A reminder that Study Club is held each week on a
Mondays from 3:30pm–4:30pm in the IRC. All students
are welcome.
Maths staff provide assistance for all students from
3:30pm–4:30pm each Tuesday in the IRC. All students
