CYRIL MEETS HIS MATCH IN GERARD
He is the well known sight of Cork supporters
nationwide but even sombrero wearing Cyril Kavanagh
met his match in local Castleisland man Gerard Murphy
after the Munster Final in Killarney last Sunday.
Gerard who along with his father Vincent Murphy run
one of the most successful sports supplier’s shops in
Ireland is also a well-known supporter of all things
sports and goes the extra mile in supporting teams.
Last year was certainly a busy year for Gerard as he
was one of the first supporters at all the Desmonds
ladies games donned in resplendent blue and white,
while he also cut a dashing look in orange when he
travelled the successful road to Croke Park with the
Brosna Footballers. Both teams won All Irelands, was it
down to his support?
With his Munster Rugby red outfit put aside for the
summer, it is now time to bring out the Kerry colours
as he along with the rest of us dream of a long summer
ahead supporting the Kingdom.
While Gerard has had not much chance to bring out his
famous Leeds United
colours of late he is still very
hopeful that, that day will
come as well.
Understandably, poor Cryil
was feeling a little down
after Fionn Fitzgerald’s late
equaliser point and having
met Gerard might have to
improve
his
own
performance as Gerard
dazzled him with his own
unique Kerry creation.
Luckily, for the pair they get
to do it all over again on
Saturday week in Killarney
at 7pm. We wonder will
Gerard have his own

RACE COMMITTEE GIVE BACK TO LOCAL CHARITIES
Castleisland Race Committee held their cheque presentation night in Tom McCarthy’s
Pub last Friday night. The cheque presentation was a result of their Annual Races,
which were held in Powell’s Road on Sunday 15th June and the Annual Humphrey
Murphy memorial 5k, which was held on Friday evening 12th June. This year’s
benefactors were the committee that look after the six Old Folks Homes at Riverview
Castleisland who received a cheque for €2,100. Glebe Lodge residential Care Centre,
Brosna Road received €1,000 and Castleisland District & Social Club who benefited
to the tune of €900. These presentations brought the total amount raised over the
past 9 years to €17,600 for local charities. The Committee Chairman Charlie Farrelly
expressed his committee’s gratitude to all the sponsors and advertisers who
supported them again this year and a special thanks to Mortimer Reidy of R.O.L.
Construction London and formerly of Knockachur Knocknagoshel who once again
was this year’s main sponsor. He said that the committee were delighted that the 5k
and the race meeting generated €4,000 profit and he hoped that this amount would
benefit the benefactors greatly.
BIG CASTLEISLAND INTEREST IN
RING OF KERRY CYCLE
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S BUSINESS
CONFERENCE FOR FESTIVAL
There was not a bicycle to be seen last weekend in the Sliabh Luachra area as
nearly every lover of the two-wheel form of transportation took to the starting
line in Killarney to complete the 112 mile route.
The event, now in its 32nd year, is the biggest one day charity fundraising event
in Munster, attracted over 11,000 leisure cyclists who spent the day taking in the
spectacular views of the Ring of Kerry with nine local charities seeing the benefit
of over a million euro that be raised this year.
Cyclists left as early at 4.30am with the route is fully marshalled. One fun fact
provided by the organisers was they ordered 23,000 sandwiches, 10,000 litres of
water, 35,000 bananas and 30,000 slices of Brack for competitors.
This year, for the first
time, the Rose of Tralee
Festival will provide the
perfect backdrop for the
introduction of a new and
important dimension; a
celebration
and
recognition of the
business ambitions and
achievements of modern
women of the Irish
diaspora. A The one-day
conference, which is
Minister for the Diaspora Jimmy Deenihan TD
being organised by
Enterprise Ireland, is aptly
themed, “Bloom for Ireland” as it will aim to harness the power of the Irish female
diaspora, to contribute to continued economic growth and prosperity in Ireland.
The conference will be opened by Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald TD, and
will be hosted by Minister for the Diaspora, Jimmy Deenihan TD.
Conference delegates will hear from Rose of Tralee Maria Walsh as well as some
previous Roses, many of whom have successful careers in business both in Ireland
and else where. Winner in 2005 Dr. Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin who is a Doctor of
Mathematics Education, will share her worklife experience and talk about the need
to encourage more women into the STEM subjects (science, technology,
engineering and maths).
The Conference represents an ideal opportunity to promote and showcase Ireland,
and the Kingdom of Kerry in particular and to celebrate Irish business success. It
represents a call on the Irish diaspora to use their influence to ‘open doors of
opportunity’ for the Irish in their country of residence.

ANNUAL KDYS/GARDA SOCCER BLITZ IN CASTLEISLAND
The Kerry Diocesan Youth Service (KDYS) in partnership with the Castleisland Garda
Siochana ran their annual soccer tournament at Castleisland Soccer Field, Limerick
Road on Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd July. The event was a great success, with
10 teams and around 90 players taking part. This year there were three boys’
categories: Primary School section, under 15’s and under 18’s competition. The
primary school competition had 4 teams taking part. It was run in one group with
each team playing each other and top two teams through to the final on the
Thursday night. In the end it came down to a final between Bubbles FC from Currow
and Messi’s Minions, Farranfore/Firies. The final was a thrilling match with Messi’s
Minion’s winning on a score line of 5-0. The Messi’s Minions were delighted to win
the trophy for the second time in three years and victory brought huge celebrations.
Two teams battled it out in the under 15’s event. The final was between Rocky
Mountains and Chicks Minions and after a brave fight from Rocky Mountains, Chicks
Minions were just too strong in the end and emerged victorious on a score line of
3-1. There were 4 teams in the under 18’s competition. Again all teams played each
other with top two teams in final. The final was a great game of soccer which was
played out in a great spirit and in the end Track Life was edged out by King B’s on a

score line of 2-0. In each competition, there were also awards handed out to
individuals for Player of the Tournament. In the Primary game, Dylan Callaghan from
Messi’s Minion’s received the award. In the U15’S category Josh Horan from Chicks
Minion’s received the award. John McMahon from The King B’S received the award
for the U18’S category. This event has been held every summer since 2004 and has
gone from strength to strength, being enjoyed by participants and spectators alike.
Once again Sgt. John O’Mahony alongside the KDYS coordinated the competition;
however the event depends on the support and help of many local volunteers. The
KDYS and Castleisland Garda Siochana would like to take this opportunity to thank
the following people –
- Vincent Murphy Sports, who provided medals and engraving
- Tom Stewart of EBS for sponsorship of medals and plaques
- George O’Callaghan for preparing the soccer pitch
- Dan Maunsell who refereed the games
Thanks also to all the team organisers, players and everyone else who supported the
event. We look forward to seeing you again next year.

BUS ÉIREANN LAUNCH NEW NETWORK OF SERVICES
Kerry football legend Darragh Ó’Sé showed a
keen interest in taking to the wheel, as he
officially launched Bus Éireann’s revised Kerry
network of services. The six-time All-Ireland
medal winner was at Tralee bus station, to mark
the celebrations for the re-designed network,
and posed with local drivers on a coach.
The revised network – which was devised by the
National Transport Authority (NTA) in partnership
with Bus Éireann, and is supported by Kerry
LocalLink – started six weeks ago. It includes

towns such as Ballybunion, Lixnaw, Abbeydorney
and Castleisland with Tralee. It also now offers
several enhanced summer services to locations
such as Dingle and Kenmare and improved public
transport access to/from Kerry Airport.
President of the Tralee Chamber Alliance John
Drummey said the improved services allowed for
better connectivity from surrounding areas, into
a Tralee hub. “People take the bus to work, to
shop or to do business in Tralee and across the
county, and connectivity is very important for
both local businesses and communities,” he said.

BUILD4LIFE CHARITY DEMANDS INVESTIGATION
Joe Browne, Chairman of
Build4Life has called on
the Minister for Health to
launch an investigation
into how the management
at
Cork
University
Hospital (CUH) allowed
over €2.3 million of the
Joe Browne
charity’s funds to be
invested
in
the
development of a desperately-needed new isolated
Cystic Fibrosis inpatient rooms (Ward 5B) knowing that
they wouldn’t have the staff to facilitate it and that it
would be left idle.
The project team for this new build was put in place
over four years ago when all objectives and timelines
were agreed. At no point were staffing levels a problem
and it was agreed that the new CF inpatients room
(Ward 5B) would open and be serviced by the existing
CUH staff in March 2015.
Joe Browne recalls, “When the plans for this new ward
were on the table the hospital advised us that the
patients and staff would be relocated to the new ward
as soon as it opened in March 2015. It was made clear
that the existing staff in CUH would service the ward
and that no new staff would be needed. The first
mention of staffing problems was communicated to
me in an email on 10th June 2015, outlining that new
staff would need to be recruited for the hospital before
the new CF unit could be opened and that the hospital
could not give me a timeline as to when this would
happen. I am raising the question as to how can money
raised by a charity like Build4Life can be taken and
used to build a state-of-the-art unit knowing that the
hospital wouldn’t have the capability to open it. It now
lies idle while patients with CF, who so desperately
need the new isolation rooms, are without and their
families and friends who fundraised so tirelessly are
frustrated, angry and disbelieving of such an illogical
situation.”
Build4Life, a parent run charity that raises money for
improved facilities for patients with Cystic Fibrosis at
the CUH, was originally set up in 2007 with the specific
goal of raising the €2,300,000 needed to build and
open the much-needed isolation rooms.
The development of isolated inpatient and outpatient
facilities is clinically proven to prevent cross infection
and allow CF patients to enter the hospital
environment without fear of becoming more ill than
before. These facilities will allow people with Cystic
Fibrosis to live longer and enjoy healthier lives.
Joe Browne is looking for answers from CUH and is
calling for someone to be held accountable. “These
plans were in place for over four years and someone
needs to be held accountable for the decisions that
were made. The hospital will not tell us how many new
staff are required overall to open the new ward and
will not give us a date for opening. It’s a disgrace. I am
calling on the Minister for Health Leo Varadkar to
launch an investigation into how this situation
involving such a substantial investment and now an
empty and idle multi-million medical unit, was allowed
to happen.”
JULETTE 12/1 TO BE TOP ROSE
With the Rose Of Tralee pageant just over a month away,
BoyleSports has priced up this year’s competition and have
Dublin Rose, Aisling Finnegan, who works as a physiotherapist
as the early 5/2 favourite.
Next in the betting is the New York Rose, Sophie Colgan, at 7/2.
Also available at 7/2 is Abu Dhabi Rose, Deirdre Ward, who hails
from Donegal and teaches Kindergarten in the UAE. Dubai Rose
and Tipperary native, Maire Ryan, is currently a 9/2 chance to
win with 25 year old Mallow native and Cork Rose, Aoife Murphy,
also on offer at 9/2.
Róisin Ní Mhatúna was born in Birmingham but raised in Rush
and will represent Germany. The now Berlin based multilingual
Kindergarten worker can be backed at 11/2 to land the coveted
crown in Tralee in August. Galway Rose, Olga Lee, is currently
available at 7/1 whilst it’s the Kerry Rose, Julette Culotty
(pictured right), who works as a social care worker, is priced at
12/1 to keep the title in Kerry.
THE SIXTH ANNUAL KVVCCC VINTAGE CAR AND HONDA RUN

is free to all to take part but a charity bucket donation will be in place, which
is voluntary, and all proceeds from this will go towards Down Syndrome Kerry.
Speaking to the Tralee Outlook Organiser George Glover said, “We are hoping
for a fine turnout of cars and Honda 50's. A route of about 25-30 miles has
been selected and finger food will be available afterwards in O'Riada's
compliments of our main sponsor O'Riada's Bar.”

BUYING THAT DREAM CAR? LET TRALEE CREDIT UNION HELP YOU
If you are thinking of changing your car this month it’s worth checking
out Tralee Credit Union low rate motor loan. Tralee Credit Union in
Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin have just reduced their Motor Loan
Rate to their lowest rate ever of 6.5% (6.7% APR). This low rate is
available on all new, second hand, personal and commercial vehicles.
Speaking to the Outlook Tralee Credit Union CEO Fintan Ryan said “ we
have reduced our motor loan rate this summer to meet the increasing
demand for low rate motor loans. It’s not just the rate that is
important it’s the flexibility of purchase as well. Remember with a
Credit Union Loan you own the vehicle straight away. There are no
fees, no balloon payments, no mileage/wear and tear restrictions
and you can clear your loan early or make extra repayments with no
Sliabh Luachra Outlook • Pg 6
penalty. We even offer free Loan Protection Insurance.
Many garages are now promoting PCP (Personal Contract Plan) as a way
of getting your new car. While PCP may have some things going for it,
there are also pitfalls that buyers should aware of 1)You are not buying a
car. You are actually renting it. 2) You are using your existing car as a
deposit for your first PCP but you will not have a car to trade in next time.
3) There are mileage restrictions and other “fair use” conditions. 4) You
will have to enter into a purchase arrangement at the end of the term to
“buy” the car you have been driving for three years. 4) PCPs may be “sold”
as interest free finance but in fact you are only renting, not buying the
vehicle. We would ask you to be fully informed and choose a deal that’s
right for you.

SUCCESSFUL MUNSTER FINALS FOR
CASTLEISLAND COMMUNITY GAMES
Castleisland Community Games teams brought back
three gold medals from their Munster exploits last
weekend with the badminton and basketball teams very
much on top of their games. Indeed that translated to 34
individual winners coming home with medals as they
now prepare to go one further with the National Finals
in Athlone taking place on August 21st.
The Castleisland U15 badminton team defeated
Tipperary to win gold as Josh Horan, Peter Burke, Kevin
Keane and Dylan Browne proved very strong in the
court.

however, the Castleisland girls battled hard to come out

defence work and vital scores from Kayla O Connor and

also came from Nicole Downey, Brid Moriarty, Labhaoise

NOREEN O’REGAN RIP
Noreen O’Regan (née Scanlon) of
Knockalougha, Knocknagoshel and
formerly of Tournafulla, Co.
Limerick, died early this week following
a illness. Noreen wrote the notes for
the Sliabh Luachra for many years
when Noreen and I took over the job
from Jim Murphy (RIP). This week I
recalled the day I rang Noreen asking
her would she join me to write the
weekly notes and she replied Kieran
are you mad. Noreen thought for a
short time and decided to help me out,
She enjoyed writing the notes and we
often had a laugh and she would do
some minor editing or improve my
spelling or just erase my entire script
and we would both start again and
between the two of us a perfect read
would be finalised before the notes
would go to print. After a few years and
lots of training Noreen informed me
that she felt I was ready to keep the
local notes going on my own. Regularly
I got phone calls from Noreen to give
me praise any some constructive
criticism, Recently Noreen got a good
laugh from the Train station story with
Vincent Browne of who she was a big
fan and I would get regularly texts over
the years saying I hope you’re
watching Vincent Browne. Noreen was
very much involved in the parish of
Knocknagoshel and did lots of
volunteer work with local groups in the
parish, I will miss the many long phone
calls from Noreen with all her wise
words, Sympathy is extended to all
Noreen’s family and friends. May she
rest in Peace.

the centre.
There are quite a few places in our parish which afford
great views of the surrounding countryside and up
there with the best of them must surely be the view
from the reservoir at Gortacoppal. On a clear bright
sunny day one can see for miles from this spot.
Looking North one sees Mount and the Steeple, looking
West one has Scartaglin Village, Castleisland and its
greater hinterland, part of Ballymacelligott and further
on Castlemaine and the Sliabh Mish mountains. Moving
one’s gaze to the South you have Dromulton, Currow,
Kilcummin, The McGillicuddy Reeks, Glounlea,
Kilsarcon, Ballahantourig, Counguilla, Carker, and The
Paps Mountains. Looking to the East you have Adriville,
Knockrour, Barna, Knockeenahone, Tooreengarrive.
This location certainly provides a beautiful panoramic
view and makes one appreciate our eye sight
something we often take for granted a lot of the time.
Kerry Diocesan Youth Service (K.D.Y.S.) is looking for
volunteers to join their team by offering support and

Volunteers should be enthusiastic and dedicated to

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer should

Last year was a black year where fatal farm accidents
were concerned and this time of year is a hive of
activity on most farms with much heavy machinery on
the move as many farm tasks are completed. Safety
awareness is always of supreme importance around
tractors and associated machinery and this awareness
holds good for people of all ages. Good to see then
that there’s a ‘Safe Tractor Driving Skills’ course
coming up for 14-16 year olds which has as its theme
‘Creating Safety Awareness amongst teenagers
working with tractors on the farm’. This is a one day
training course after which participants will receive
an FRS Training Certificate with recognition from the
Farm Safety Partnership and Health and Safety
Authority. Young people in the above age bracket who
would like to enrol on this course should contact

ST. KIERANS: St. Kierans travel to Kilcummin on
Saturday evening next 10th July for Round 3 game in the
Co. Championship. This game is due to throw in at
7.00pm. Best wishes to all involved especially all
involved from the Parish.
JUNIORS: Our Junior team are awaiting the losers of
the game between Gneevguilla and Clounmacon to find
out who they will face in the semi final of the junior
league. This game is due to take place next weekend.
FAOI 14: We played three Castleisland District league
games in the space of the last week. First up was Knock
Brosna at home in Ballymac. We were full of hope
entering this game and felt that we had a good chance
of victory. We played very well throughout with very
good performances by Dean Lenihan and Johnny Lowe
in particular. In a tight game Knock Brosna got a vital
goal with minutes remaining and they ran out winners
with five points to spare.
Our second game came the following night v Desmonds.
The town team were superior to us in every part of the
field. The Desmonds were bolstered by ten older boys
whose strength and physicality could not be matched
by our lads. Desmonds ran out comfortable winners on
the night.
Our third game came at home to Mitchels. Again we
knew we had a good chance to take the spoils. The
game was a tight affair like the Knock game. Our boys
were well up for it David and Liam were to the fore ably
assisted by the likes of Ciaran and Bryan. There was
nothing between the sides as we entered the last ten
minutes. However Mitchels got the break with a well
worked goal. Our mistakes were proving costly and ones
from which the boys will have to learn from. These tight
games will stand to the boys in time and with better
application they will see disappointment turn to joy.
FAOI 13: We started our Coiste Tra Li league against
Austin Stacks. The Stacks U 14 had the previous
weekend won the all Ireland U14 div 1 title and this gave
us plenty of focus for the task we faced with their U 13
team. Ballymac were not found wanting and a great
game of football ensued.
At half time the sides were 4pts a piece in a very tight

the quarter final of the Co. League. Our girls gave a
superb display and came away with a most
comprehensive victory. This win now qualifies them for
a semi final against Legion and a win here will see our

especially the people who had taken part in our former
tours who have passed away.

Heraclitus said “Change is the only constant in life.”
And how right he was. Towards the end of last week

Having met with the other priests in the Pastoral Area
we are fortunate that collectively we will be able to
maintain one weekend mass in each church (this is not
the case in all pastoral areas). Our probable schedule
will be two masses Saturday evening, and three
masses on Sunday morning (the timings will have to fit
in with neighbouring parish schedules)
This will be an area requiring huge change? Fr Kevin
and I spend two days each month visiting the
housebound. With only one priest, and with the
likelihood that this ministry could be regularly
interrupted by funerals and other unforeseen events,
it is important that we have in each area, Eucharistic

necessary. Instead of asking
what will happen to our
Churches? Should we not be
asking how we can make our
churches more vibrant? Just
because the priest isn’t
present all the time doesn’t
mean there cannot be
prayer. We can develop lay
led liturgies in the absence
of the priest. (again this is
already happening in other
parishes) We will need to enlist additional parishioners
who will be willing to sit on the Boards.
We need to gather a team of volunteers who will join
with the priest in taking care of the Pastoral needs
of the Primary Schools and who will also help with
Sacramental Preparation. Presently baptisms are
available on requested dates, I will consult with others
to see how they have dealt with this issue. The
flexibility on Baptisms is limited because of the large
number of weddings which are already booked (22nd
August, 19th September, 26th September, 17th October,
24th October, 31st October, 7th November, 14th
November, 21st November, 28th November,1 2th
December, 19th December, 21st December, and 30th
December. Is it best to designate a day each month in
each Church when Baptisms will be celebrated?
How will it be possible to have individual month’s mind
masses in all these cases? Some parishes have met
this challenge by having a special mass each month
for those who have died during that month.
Is this worth considering?
ADMINISTRATION: We are very fortunate in Rathmore
to have excellent staff members who deal with much
of the administration. We have also have every
confidence in the various parish committees: Building,
Finance, Liturgical etc.
With the new busier Pastoral Schedule it will not
always be possible for Fr. Pat to attend all meetings.
SUGGESTION BOX: A suggestion box at each church
exit next weekend and would welcome your comments,
suggestions, or your advice on these and any other
areas that you feel might need to be considered. It
would be great if you could leave your name or contact
number when making your suggestions, but it is not
essential. Alternatively you can email us at
rathmore@dioceseofkerry.ie. If any parishioner would
like to be involved in any of the aforementioned
ministries or if you can help in any way please contact
Fr. Pat. We will all miss Fr. Kevin with his sense of
humour and laugher but we wish him well in his new
parish of Moyvane as parish priest which is become
effective on Wednesday, July 22.

entertaining game of football from the off with both
teams making great use of their chances. Scart had a
five point advantage after the first half with a scoreline
of Scartaglen 1-8 Kilcummin 1-3. Kilcummin were the
stronger for the first 20 minutes of the second half
putting a lot of pressure on Scarts backs. Kilcummins
John McCarthy and Colm Lenihan did a lot of work to
draw the game level scoring 1-4 between them.
However two late points from Scart from Hugh O
Connor and Tom Boyle were enough to seal a hard
earned victory. Scarts scorers: Sean Tangney (0-2),
Brian Hanrahan (1-1), Pat O Sullivan (0-4), Denis Lenihan
(0-2), Mike Firzgerald (0-1), Tom Boyle (0-1). The
Scartaglen team was as follows: David Kerins, Aaron
Gallagher, Pa Murphy, Kevin Lenihan, Timothy Kerins,
Tom Culloty, Sean Tangney, Tom Forde, Niall Casey,
Brian Hanrahan, Denis Lenihan, Fred O Connor, Pat O
Sullivan, Mike Fitzgerald, Tom Boyle.
Primary Go Games: Well done to Grainne Walsh of
Counguilla who represented Scartaglin Primary School
and Scartaglin Ladies Football Club on the Kerry
Primary schools Go-Games team which played Cork at
half time on Sunday at The Munster Finals at Fitzgerald
Stadium Killarney. Grainne played well in defence for
Kerry and nice to see a local girl in action on the big
occasion. A selector for the Kerry team is teacher
Joanne Brosivan who is herself a senior player with
The Scartaglin Ladies Football Club.
County League: Scartaglin remaining games in Div 4
of The Credit Union County League are at home to
Castlegregory, away to Dr. Crokes and at home to
Churchill and Dromid Pearses. The next match will be
towards the end of July against Castlegregory in
Round 8.
Greyhound Racing: ‘Oneco Maverick’ was a
Castleisland winner at The Kingdom Greyhound
Stadium Tralee on Saturday evening last when scoring
for owner Patrick Begley in a time of 28.80.

CAIT TO LEAD KERRY INTO BATTLE
TG4 MUNSTER LGFA SENIOR FINAL CORK V KERRY
Email: maura@walshcolourprint.com / news@outlookmags.com
DATE: SATURDAY 11TH JULY 2015 VENUE: MALLOW TIME: 6PM
With all the excitement of the Fitzgerald Stadium
behind us, it is now the turn of the ladies in their
Munster Final which will take place next Saturday in
Mallow at 6pm with a very strong local interest.
Desmonds who won last years Intermediate club title
have a number of players on the panel which see Cait
Lynch captain the side with Lorraine Scanlon, Aisling
Leonard also very likely to feature in the starting line
up.
For Kerry manager Alan O’Neill the wait has been a
frustrating one “It will be ten full weeks from our last
match and then to be thrust into a Munster final
against the All Ireland and league champions is
frustrating.” O’Neill told the Kerryman in advance of
his sides Munster Final clash with Cork on Saturday
evening.
“It’s hard to know where we are really. We have had
plenty in house games and a few challenges but
nothing replaces matches. Last season we had the
preliminary rounds and while some people felt these
were a little useless to teams but they gave teams like
us two games before a final and a chance to tweak
things a little.” So now, it is very much into the
unknown but it is the same for his opposition Cork who
have not had a game in 8 weeks.
When taking charge last October the Legion man
promised to “open the door to new talent”. He has
certainly remained true to his word with 31 different
players getting some action in the league and he
proved he was able to balance this
with results with Kerry getting to
the league semi-finals with a fine
home wins over Dublin and
Monaghan, while they dug out a
win against Mayo away from home.
Tellingly enough their only defeats
in the league came against Galway
and Cork (twice), which is a good
enough form guide seeing that
both these teams contested the
league final and needed a second
day to be separated.
The Provincial line up is a familiar Cait Lynch will be hoping to raise the Brendan Martin Cup later this September but

GREYHOUND BAR KO CUP FINAL
CASTLEISLAND AFC 3-3 LISTOWEL CELTIC AFC BY TOMMY NAUGHTON
Yet again a final between these two sides will have to be
played again after a thrilling draw in Mounthawk Park.
The opening goal came as early as the fifth minute. Sean
Brosnan whipped in a free kick on the right wing which
cannoned of Micheal Lynch and found its way into his own
net to give Castleisland the lead. This early set back didn’t
seem to phase Listowel and Kevin Moran had to be alert
to deny Mike Woods moments later. Listowel were creating
chances and Just before the half hour mark the game was
all square , Kevin McCarthy sent a high ball in the
Castleisland Penalty area where Keeper Kevin Moran and
defender Aidan O Callaghan both hesitated ingoing for the
ball allowing Aidan Quinn to get in-between them to flick
the ball home from close range.
Minutes later and Listowel Celtic nearly grabbed the lead
when a Paudie Quinn cross picked out Bryan Murphy
whose powerful header was just over the bar. The game
was now end to end and Aidan O Callaghan headed just
over the top from a Sean Brosnan corner.
Within minutes of the restart Mike Hannafin fired over
from a long throw by Timmy Walsh. On the hour mark
Castleisland were back in front . Tommy Feehan play a long
diagonal ball to Sean Brosnan on the corner of the penalty
area , Brosna beat his marker getting to the end line and
drilled a low ball across the face of the goal where Dean
Poolman made no mistake from close range flicking the
ball passed Cathal Kean in the Listowel Celtic goal. The
lead didn’t last long as within two minutes Listowel Celtic
were awarded a penalty for a handball against Ray
Huggard. Paudie Quinn stepped up and made no mistake
levelling the game for the second time.
The best move of the game came with twenty minutes
remaining. Listowel Celtic put together ten one touch
passes involving Mike Woods, Kevin Bambury, Paudie
Quinn and Ian Murphy before it got to Paudie Quinn whose
shot inside the penalty area just missed the target.
Listowel Celtic then for the first time in the game went
ahead with only fourteen minutes remaining when Bryan
Murphy headed home a Paudie Quinn corner. Minutes later
and Listowel nearly grabbed another from a Quinn corner
only to see Martin Loughnane glancing header flash
across the face of the goal and wide.
Then as time ran out the dramatic finish that Castleisland
needed happened . As we entered the final minute of the
three minutes of added time Sean Brosnan found his way
inside the corner of the Listowel Celtic penalty area, he
beat his marker who left a leg in and near took him down,
Brosnan kept going and delivered the ball low into a
crowed goalmouth where Shane Loughnane managed to
poke the ball over the line with keeper Cathal Keane only
able to partially get one hand to the ball to send the
Castleisland team and supports wild.
Castleisland AFC; Kevin Moran, Pierce Brosnan, Patrick
Hickey, Aidan O’Callaghan, Ray Huggard, Timmy Walsh,
Shane Loughlin, Sean Brosnan, Mike Hannafin, Stan Divane,
Dean Poolman. Subs; Tommy Feehan for Mike Hannafin (57
mins), Paul Carmody for Stan Divane (75 mins), Stephen
McCarthy for Ray Huggrad ( 83 mins).
Listowel Celtic; Cathal Keane, Martin Loughnane, Kevin
McCarthy, Micheal Lynch, Seamus Keane, Aidan Quinn,
Bryan Murphy, Paudie Quinn, Ian Murphy, Mike Woods,
Kevin Bambury. Subs; Eoin o Mahony for Ian Murphy (83

MARGARET’S RAMBLINGS
BREAKTHROUGH CANCER RESEARCH CENTRE SAYS
THANKS
On June 7th last the Vintage Tractor, Car and Motor
Bike Charity Run in aid of the Breakthrough Cancer
Research Centre based in Glenlee, Western Road, Cork
organised by Noel O’Connor from Dulague,
Castleisland and his friends raised a massive
€4,020.00 and they wish to thank everyone that took
part, gave donations or helped in any way to make
the day such an outstanding success and without
whose help and support it would not be possible to
hold the event.
Noel and the organisers insist that the following
words of thanks from Ann O’Sullivan are for each and
every one of the supporters of the Vintage Run and
its associated fundraisers down through the years.
In acknowledgement of the donation Ann O’Sullivan
from the Fundraising Office of the centre wrote
“Thanks to Noel and his family and friends who have
raised a total of over €19,000 from the past four
years of Vintage Runs, through research and kind
support like yours, we are turning the tide on cancer,
and finding more and more, new and exciting ways to
beat it. And I know as long as we have good people
like you to count on for support, the cures and
treatments so many people need will come.
I believe that one day soon, thousands of families –
whose lives may otherwise be broken by cancer – will
instead get to share many more of those precious
moments and build more wonderful family memories
… all because of the generosity and foresight of
wonderful people like you”.
Noel and his fellow organisers are already looking
forward to the event in 2016 with the date of Sunday
June 5th or 12th pencilled in his diary.
SAVE OUR NATURE CAMPAIGN
Birdwatch Ireland has produced a video where Irish
people call on us and the powers that be to Save Our
Nature.
Over 320,000 people have signed the petition all over
Europe which is an amazing response. Birdwatch
Ireland wants to push this number higher and we
have 3 weeks to go. The campaign ends on July 24th
so please if you could, share the video to your
contacts, on facebook and twitter. The video has a
link at the end to sign the petition. Be a Voice for
Nature and let everyone know that you wish to keep
the EU laws of the Birds Directive and the Habitats
Directive strong. If we didn’t have these EU
directives, nature in Ireland would be in a bad state.
These EU laws are under threat as part of a review of
by the European Commission, called the Regulatory
Fitness and Performance Programme (REFIT). This
process could lead to their weakening and eroding
the benefits they provide to people and the
environment, we the people that care about nature
need you to do something about it.
Please, fill in the online form on the Birdwatch Ireland
website to let the European Commission know that
you don't want them to destroy legal protection for
Ireland's and Europe's flora and fauna. It only takes
a few seconds, and your voice will make a difference.
The Commission launched a public consultation in the
form of a questionnaire on this issue in May.
Birdwatch Ireland have uploaded their completed
version of the questionnaire which you can submit
once you fill in the form on their website. If you wish
to view the bare questionnaire itself that is also
available on the site.
BirdWatch Ireland believes that if we did not have
these laws in Ireland:
*We would not have an appropriate level of
protection for birds, animals, fish, insects, plants and
their habitats. Ireland is already bottom of the class,
ranking a dismal 28th out of all 28 EU Member States

in 2010 according to a report prepared by BirdLife
International. Unfortunately, 92% of our EUprotected habitats (peatlands, grasslands, estuaries
etc.) have ‘bad’ or 'inadequate' status.
*Ireland would not be nearly as attractive a
destination for tourists. Our landscape and nature
are in the top reasons why people come to Ireland
for holidays.
*We would not have the valuable benefits of
biodiversity to the Irish economy, currently
conservatively valued as being worth at least ¤2.6bn
to the Irish economy in ecosystem services.
*Our agriculture, fisheries, and tourism sectors
depend on biodiversity employing 117,000 people
would be diminished.
*We would have undermined the most productive
fishing grounds in the EU (Ireland’s!), which generate
over 900,000 tonnes of fish with an estimated landed
value of €1.04 billion.
*We would have destroyed 600,000 ha of wetlands in
Ireland, and a freshwater angling sector that involves
406,000 anglers generating annual expenditure of
€555 million per annum.
*The once common Corncrake would have gone
extinct (currently there are fewer than 200 calling
males, they are making a small recovery in remote
parts of the North West).

WEATHER-WISE IRELAND NO LONGER SNEEZES IF
BRITAIN GETS A COLD
On June 29th, the heatwave continued in much of
Europe, with high temperature warnings issued in
Poland, Hungary, Switzerland and the province of
Cordoba in Spain. Madrid's international Airport
reported 40C, a first for June in records dating back
to 1945. Cordoba, in southern Spain, reached a
sizzling 43.7C on the preceding day.
On July 1st, the temperature at London's Heathrow
Airport nudged 36.7C - a July heat record for
anywhere in Great Britain. Three French locations
chalked up all-time highs, records that have already
been reset in at least one of the previous 21st century
heatwaves.
In Boulogne-sur-Mer, 35.4C beat the previous record
of August 11, 2003 (34.8C); in Dieppe, 38.3C beat the
previous record of July 19, 2006 (37C); and in Melun,
39.4C beat the previous record of August 12, 2003
(38.9C).
The 2003 European heatwave led to the hottest
summer on record in Europe since at least 1540.
This heatwave was the first extreme weather event
to be attributed to the human influence on the
climate, with research suggesting it was made more
than twice as likely because of climate change.
The 2006 European heatwave arrived at the end of
June, mostly in central and northern countries. July
2006 was the warmest in Poland since the beginning
of meteorological measurements in 1779. The British
Met Office declared that the extended summer of
2006 was the hottest summer ever recorded in
Britain.
Recent research from the British Met Office has
suggested that over the past 10 to 15 years, the
likelihood of a "very hot" summer has risen, from
once every 50 years to once every five years.
Heatwaves such as that of 2003 will become "very
common" by the 2040s under all emissions pathways
used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change.
As an example, in De Bilt, the Netherlands, a heat
wave like the current one would have been a roughly
one-in-30-years event in the 1900s and is now likely
to happen every three and a half years.

FINALLY THIS WEEK
The local news station was interviewing an 80-yearold lady because she had just gotten married for the
fourth time. The interviewer asked her questions
about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying
again at 80, and then about her new husband's
occupation. "He's a funeral director," she answered.
"Interesting," the newsman thought and then asked
her if she wouldn't mind telling him a little about her
first three husbands and what they did for a living.
She paused for a few moments, needing time to
reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile
came to her face and she answered proudly,
explaining that she had first married a banker when
she was in her 20's, then a circus ringmaster when in
her 40's, and a preacher when in her 60's, and now in her 80's - a funeral director. The interviewer looked
at her, quite astonished, and asked why she had
married four men with such diverse careers…
She smiled and explained, "I married one for the
money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four
to go."
KERRY MANAGER PICKS DIVANES TO BE PART OF
HIS WINNING TEAM
Kerry senior manager Eamonn Fitxmaurice is well used to picking players as
part of his team. He looks for reliability, teamwork and a good record of
accomplishment. Therefore, it is no surprise that Volkswagen is the first name
he puts on his team sheet.
Last Friday in advance of the Munster Final Fitzmaurice picked up his new 152
Volkswagen Passat Highline keys from MD of Divanes Castleisland, Denis Divane
as he faced into what was going to be a very exciting week for him.
Fitzmaurice is well used to answering questions about team selection on the
football field but also proved a dab hand at cars.
“Since I have taken over Kerry, the lads in Divanes have been very good in
looking after me. I have had a variety of cars from the Passat to the Jetta, to the
Tiguan that I have been driving for the last while and all of them are fantastic
cars. I have found them very good in terms of mileage, in terms of miles per
gallon, very good in fuel. They are very comfortable and very reliable that goes
with the Volkswagen brand. It’s a brilliant brand and I’m delighted to be
Denis Divane, MD Divanes Castleisland presenting VW Brand Ambassador, Eamonn Fitzmaurice with

The All Ireland winning manager and three time All Ireland winning player will be the keys of the 152 KY Passat Highline at the Killarney Road, Castleisland base on Friday afternoon.
Included are: Paul Langston and John Vahey, Divanes Castleisland. Pic Joe Hanley
