As in the past, the Sukkah, which was decorated by the Sisterhood, is available to those who wish to have friends for dinner in the Sukkah. Please see Marilyn in the office to reserve an evening. Remember, the Sukkah is an extension of the Shul and all food brought in must be from an approved Kosher food purveyor. If you have any questions about this, see Marilyn or Steve Wallach. It is a lovely thing to do and we do not have to worry about having to brush the snow off the table. 0nly my children thought that was funny. Somehow a snowball in my soup wasn’t quite like a matzo ball. Ah, those were the days, remembered more fondly in retrospect. Kudos to Rabbi Adler and Cantor Sapir for a beautiful Yom Tov, to the choir, whose hours of rehearsals were not wasted, to Cantor Wood and Eliot Kahn for their long hours working with the choir. We are growing, we are ready to expand our horizons with another year of Life Long Learning with its scholars, and their entertaining, and enlightening programs. Full brochures will be available shortly. Rosh Chodesh luncheons will begin its 17th season of presenting outstanding lectures over a tasty lunch. What could be better than good food, intelligent discussions and good company. A winning combination. See you there. Look for the announcement elsewhere in the Kol for the date of the first Rosh Chodesh luncheon. The Book Club has met throughout the year and will continue this month. Check the calendar for dates. We are ready to begin anew a reading of our beginnings from the creation of our world to the birth of our nation, as we begin with universal history and then zoom in on the lives of the patriarchs and their families. Each year as we begin anew, it is like meeting family again with their quirks and quaintness, their earthly concerns for survival and their reach for the divine. We, too, begin again, reaching for higher understanding, for greater participation of our growing family. I am looking forward with excitement and enthusiasm and hope you all catch the excitement with me. As always, I ask Mechila of you for any words said in haste or anger. There are times for many of us, me especially, when the mouth goeth before the brain. My best wishes to each and every one of you for a healthy, prosperous, and wonderful New Year. See you in Shul. Shalom, Barbara Grau A Match Made In Heaven….And Delray Beach With the fall Holidays behind us, we begin the Torah anew. In the majestic tale of creation the world comes into being by the Hand of G-D. All is miraculous and awe inspiring and yet there is a discordant note right at the very beginning. “Lo tov yihiyeh adam bilvado”, It is not good for man to be alone. And so the Almighty reconsidered and brought Eve into being, as an antidote to loneliness. The refrains of “Lo tov” resonate in our community each week, when many congregants find themselves unable to drive to Anshei Shalom, for Friday Evening Services at 7:30pm. Likewise there are those, who are able to drive and yet have no one to take with them to shull. They would welcome an opportunity for company, to ride together at night, but there is no mechanism available to make their wish a reality. To be alone on Shabbat, isolated from your fellow members is “not good”. As G-D’s agents in this world, we should be sensitive to the pain of feeling alone. Together, we have found a way to solve this vexing problem. Our own congregant, Paul Erstein has graciously volunteered to create a ride matching program for Friday Night. He will spear-head an initiative that will connect those who need a ride with those who can offer a ride in your neighborhood. Truly this is a mitzvah that embodies the spirit of fellowship and friendship as we strive to create a more welcoming and inclusive synagogue family. New Year’s resolutions are integral to the imperative of “teshuvah”, renewal and change, that we espoused on the High Holidays. What better way to begin 5776 on a positive note than to bring cheer to a homebound neighbor and join together to celebrate Shabbat at Anshei Shalom. You will feel good and do good at the same time. I encourage you to get involved. I know you will be glad you did. Please call the office if you are able to drive or need a ride to Friday Night Services. “Tizku Mitzvot”, may we strengthen each other in good deeds. Shalom, Rabbi Raphael Adler Barbara Grau Rabbi Raphael Adler 3 Two Exciting Events for an announcement. Dvora and I thank all of those who sent us a Shanna Tova card and we wish you all a happy and healthy year. Faithfully yours Cantor Efraim Sapir As I sit down to write these lines we are still in the midst of the High Holydays and even though I have many things to attend to, I take a few moments to write a short message for this bulletin. My dear friends here are two very exciting events that I wish to draw your attention to that are coming up shortly. The first one is my annual “Cantor Sapir & Friends” concert on December 24th that will feature two outstanding performers, Cantor Ellen Tilem, daughter of our members David and Jackie Cohen and Rebecca Gastfriend, granddaughter of our members Eddie and Marilyn Gastfriend and I think that the name “All in the Family” fits this event. Please refer to the information on the back cover of bulletin for details. I am asking you to make this event a financial success by buying tickets in the highest category and bringing your friends as well. I know the concert will be an artistic success and that you will enjoy it. After all, what do you have going for you on that specific date? Come and enjoy the show and support our Temple at the same time. Tickets are on sale now! The second is a Mission to Israel that will be led by Dvora and me in May of 2016. Information is also available in the flyer in this bulletin. Those who have participated in such mission with us before will gladly tell you how much fun we have during the tour. Five star accommodation and the best time ever for our participants. Please note that this tour will be designed for both first time travelers as well as for repeaters. We will be happy to accommodate our members of course but non members are also welcome so, tell your friends about it and encourage them to come along. An informational meeting will be scheduled shortly after the holidays, please stay tuned Anshei After Dark–back for a second year! A monthly Wednesday evening entertainment series! These three mordantly witty, complex women share their family's apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side. They love each other fiercely, but being an Alter isn't easy. Bad luck is in their genes, passed down through the generations. Yet no matter what curves life throws at these siblings—and it's hurled plenty—they always have a wisecrack, and one another. In the waning days of 1999, the trio decides it's time to close the circle of the Alter curse. But first, as the world counts down to the dawn of a new millennium, Lady, Vee, and Delph must write the final chapter of a saga lifetimes in the making—one that is inexorably intertwined with that of the twentieth century itself. Unspooling threads of history, personal memory, and family lore, they weave a mesmerizing account of their lives that stretches back decades to their great-grandfather, a brilliant scientist whose professional triumph became the sinister legacy that defines them. SS Obersturmfuhrer Paul Meissner arrives in Auschwitz from the Russian front wounded and fit only for administrative duty. His most pressing task is to improve camp morale and he establishes a chess club, and allows officers and enlisted men to gamble on the games. Soon Meissner learns that chess is also played among the prisoners, and there are rumors of an unbeatable Jew known as "the Watchmaker." Meissner's superiors begin to demand that he demonstrate German superiority by pitting this undefeated Jew against the best Nazi players. Meissner finds Emil Clément, the Watchmaker, and a curious relationship arises between them. As more and more games are played, the stakes rise, and the two men find their fates deeply entwined. Twenty years later, the two meet again in Amsterdam-Meissner has become a bishop, and Emil is playing in an international chess tournament. Having lost his family in the horrors of the death camps, Emil wants nothing to do with the ex-Nazi officer despite their history, but Meissner is persistent. "What I hope," he tells Emil, "is that I can help you to understand that the power of forgiveness will bring healing." As both men search for a modicum of peace, they recall a gripping tale of survival and trust. A suspenseful meditation on understanding and guilt, John Donoghue's The Death's Head Chess Club is a bold debut and a rich portrait of a surprising friendship. 7 Mission to Israel May 24th – June 7th 2016 Led By Cantor Efraim & Dvora Sapir Accommodations: 12 nights as per below: May 25th-29th 4 nights at Leonardo Plaza Jerusalem May 29th-30th 1 night Ramon Inn Mitzpe Ramon May 30th - June 2nd 3 nights at Kibbutz Hagoshrim June 2nd-6th 4 nights Herods Tel Aviv Land Services included: * Group Meet and Assist on arrival and departure * 1 escorted arrival transfer with your tour guide * 1 escorted departure transfer with your tour guide * Portrage at the airport and hotels * 11 days of Touring with your licensed English-speaking guide * 11 days of private transportation on Dlx air- conditioned coach * All entrance fees as per last itinerary with negev tour to Mitzpe Ramon * Service and local taxes * Tourist kit including maps, hats, etc. * Meals as per the schedule For more information please call the Temple office 495-1300 or Cantor Sapir 716-6182 Not included: * Flights * Meals not mentioned as included * Tips to tour guide, bus driver and hotel staff * Travel insurance (optional but highly recommended) Join with your Temple Anshei Shalom family for this wonderful experience! 8 Membership “Social Sunday Singles”, Sunday, October 11th at 12:00 noon. May this be a happy and healthy year for you, yours and Temple Anshei Shalom. Shalom, Barbara Kirshner and Harriet DeCosta 10 th th st As I See It Kurds would make more of a move toward independence. Not all imperialism was committed by Western nations and Turkey is as much a problem as others. So the West continues to appease its enemies at the expense of turning its back on its friends. Islamic Jihad, mostly asleep for a long time, has come back to life with the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood, the revolution in Iran and 9/11. Western governments are still under-estimating the danger and over-estimating their capability to defeat their technologically inferior bur spiritually more determined adversaries. How soon will it be before the demographic changes in Europe make it politically impossible for Europeans to fight back? Where are we in this conflict? I think we are in the thick of it and losing ground. Millions of dollars of aid from Arab countries to universities like Harvard, Georgetown and many others have not gone to waste. Universities are pushing a Universalist, multi-cultural post-colonial viewpoint which is gaining traction while we still claim that the growing isolation is Israel’s fault because of the presence of Jews in Judea-Samaria. Concessions on this front will seriously damage Israeli self-defense capabilities. The day after Israel withdraws from Judea-Samaria, new demands will be made on behalf of Arab residents of Jaffa, Tel Aviv, Haifa and all points in between. There is little time to waste. Continue to pressure Congressmen, Senators to stand firm against concessions to Iran. At the very least, this deal rewards bad behavior. Congress, both houses, both parties, have a constitutional responsibility to stand against this deal. I realize that by the time you read this, it will be past the time of this discussion and vote. However, many of those who vote today have to stand for re-election soon. We have long memories. Sometimes political considerations should give way to national security and safety as well as common sense. Perhaps it is a generational thing but I am not ready to be so Universalist that I forgo national self-interest. Shalom Barbara Grau By Barbara Grau In four score and one year, one would have thought that one had seen it all, overcame most and would have become wise enough to recognize the new danger zones. One would be wrong. I began writing this on 9/11, another memorable day among many to be remembered as another Day of Infamy. The difference was this was so much closer to home, so many friends, colleagues, children of friends that it struck a particularly harsh note. A resurgent and particularly virile anti-Semitism has reemerged in Europe and on Campuses in the United States. Not coincidently, anti-Israel demonstrations are seen throughout the world and disguised as Freedom movements, BDS, boycotts of Israeli academics, writers, manufacturing goods and various incantations of old anti-Semitism. The stupidity of this is that it hurts the very people they think they are helping. And now we have a migrant crisis. Europe tsktsked while Syria murdered its citizens, Lebanese minorities were being killed by sectarian Muslims, Christians in virtually every Middle Eastern Arab country are being decimated. What were they thinking when being confronted with a mass migration from these very nations in the process of disintegration along tribal lines? Hungary is building a fence (is it like Mexico?) They need not worry. Indicators are that these people prefer to go to Germany, the economic powerhouse of the European Union. Looking back over the past few years, we should have seen this crisis coming. For a while, it was possible to play a shell game. It was all Israel’s fault for not granting “Palestinians” a country of its own. That has been the mantra of the US State Department. Looking at it now, a thinking person realizes how irrelevant the Israel-Palestine conflict really is. Some of the fault for today’s mess is the fault of the West which chose to reap the benefits of colonialism without accepting the responsibilities and whose policies consisted of taking resources out of and putting weapons into the “countries” while ignoring their pathological politics. So writes Vic Rosenthal for a blog called Aba Yehuda. As we look at the Middle East today, it would seem likely that the West took a few wrong turns, intervening where it should not and not where it should have. They all missed the boat with the Kurds against Syria because it might anger our NATO allies because its 11 TAS Men’s Club Bulletin Sam Perlowitz – Editor (Z.L.) Sam Wasserman – Co-Editor (Z.L.) Ritholtz: 369-7666 or Gayle Savitz: 330-4218 17 The following was written about my dear friend Jack Rubin: A Man Worth Remembering By Jacq Hundley Over in Vary, Czechoslovakia, eleven years before The Fight, A Man worth remembering entered the world with delight. Only forty-six Jewish families lived in his hometown; Ashes, ashes, we don’t All fall down. Jack Rubin is a man who survived the Holocaust; He teaches us to Persevere when all seems lost. NEED SOMEONE TO TALK TO? “I CAN HELP!” Losing the right to own a business started the Discrimination, The Rubin’s family was forced to leave due to the Jewish Proclamation. Walking up to Pure Taerror, they saw the Evil Nazi Stare; Reading “Arbeit Macht Frei” told them they were There. Auschwitz and others like it didn’t simply take People’s Lives; Even the Survivors were beaten and Dehumanized. Although words could Never describe the way people were treated, Memory is something that lives on; It can never be Deleted. And to think that All of this could have easily been stopped, If only the terrible, evil idea of Discrimination would be dropped. So I propose we practice equality from January to December, Jack Rubin, a True Hero; what a man to Remember. New program…. GIVE A RIDE-GET A RIDE We are starting something new!
