Notre Dame of Bethlehem School Assessment Announcement The tradition of a quality Catholic education in the Diocese of Allentown is based upon the collaborative partnership between parents/guardians and the school. As part of the routine Diocesan Administrative Assessment Process, a random sample of school families will be selected to complete a parent/guardian component of the Administrator Assessment. The input from this assessment will be kept confidential and will only be reviewed by the Diocesan Office of Education. In order to insure a more thorough assessment this process is taking place in a three year cycle: 2011-2012 Catholic Schools in Berks County; 2012-2013 Catholic Schools in Northampton and Carbon Counties; 2013-2014 Catholic Schools in Lehigh, Schuylkill Counties. Friday, March 14, 2014 For those of you who don’t know, Christian Loch, Kurt Loch’s son, has been very ill for more than 3 weeks. He started with Pneumonia which turned into the flu (the H1N1 virus). His heart is presently only functioning at 15%. He is in an induced coma and on a ventilator. He was recently transferred from Bethlehem to the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. Christian is married and has an 18 month old daughter. His wife has had to give up their home and has moved in with her parents. Christian is now on family leave, which means there is no income for Christian. The proceeds from this Dress Down Day will be used to help support Christian and his family during this very difficult time. With our support, we may be able, in some small way, to help alleviate the anxiety and worry because of Christian’s illness. PLEASE NOTE: Our students and faculty will be praying the Rosary in Church in front of the Blessed Sacrament throughout the day on Friday. Classes will go to Church at different times to pray for healing for Christian. You are certainly invited to come and join us in prayer. Then this is the program for you! Come spend a day and find out what it’s really all about! I came last year, will this year have different routines and music? Absolutely, come and see how much you've grown as a musician the second year or how much easier it is to spin/twirl! What if I used to play an instrument but gave it up? Then this is the day for you! More often that not, playing an instrument is like riding a bike, you never forget! It might take a little extra work, but this day is perfect to see what band is like on the high school level. The tasks that children are asked to complete, the procedures used to administer the test, and the method used to score the test are alike. 2.The purpose of the ITBS, Iowa Test of Basic Skills, is to: evaluate academic progress of each child, identify children in need of remedial assistance, identify a school’s strengths and weaknesses, determine the educational ability of each child, determine if children are performing at his/her ability, and evaluate Diocesan children compared to national averages. GENERAL INFORMATION This year the Diocese of Allentown will use the new IOWA Assessments (1A) Form E, and Form F, and the new Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT), Form 7, for Spring 2014. The children in 2nd grade will take the Core Battery Test where they are tested in vocabulary, word analysis, reading, listening, language, and mathematics and computation. The children in grades 3-7 will take the Complete Battery Test which includes all the areas listed above along with social studies, science, capitalization, punctuation and computation. AREAS OF THE CURRICULUM TO BE TESTED Vocabulary Measures children’s pure word knowledge. Reading Comprehension Measures children’s ability to make inferences, draw conclusions or make predictions based on a reading selection. Listening Measures children’s ability to comprehend material presented orally. Word Analysis Measures children’s ability to understand and differentiate between words as it relates to literacy. Language Measures children’s ability in writing conventions such as punctuation, capitalization, spelling as well as usage and expression. Math Measures children’s ability of computation skills, mathematical concepts and problem solving. Questions are based upon the NCTM Standards. Science Measures children’s ability of scientific concepts as well as their ability to classify, hypothesize, infer, measure and explain. Social Studies Measures children’s ability to understand broad concepts and topics in areas of history, geography, economics and government and society. TYPES OF SCORES Percentile Rank (PR) A child’s percentile rank is a score that tells the percent of children in a particular group that received lower raw scores on a test than that particular child did. It shows the child’s relative position or rank in a group of children who are in the same grade and who were tested at the same time of year (fall, mid-year or spring). Thus, for example, if Toni earned a percentile rank of 72 on the Math Problem Solving test, it means that she scored higher than 72 percent of the children in the group with which she is being compared. Of course, it also means that 28 percent of the group scored higher than Toni. Percentile ranks range from 1 to 99. National Percentile Rank (NPR) A child’s national percentile rank shows their standing within the group with children in the same grade who were tested at the same time of year (fall, mid-year or spring) during the national standardization. This large group of children attend schools that are representative of schools throughout the nation in terms of region, enrollment size, and socioeconomic status. Grade Equivalent (GE) This score is a decimal number that describes performance in terms of grade level and months.
