Back to
School
Season!
It is Back to School
season for many families.
Here at Notre Dame
Health Care, education
is always in season and
a part of everything that
we do.
Educating for life is part
of the mission of the
Sisters of Notre Dame,
and continuous learning
likewise holds importance for all members of
our Notre Dame Health
Care community.
Continuous education
is critical for our staff
members who are giving
direct care so that they
know the most innovative techniques for providing one-on-one care,
and for those helping
clients to navigate the
health care system. It is
invaluable to our leadership team as they
(continued on next page)
Those words touched our souls and both raised and
saddened our spirits as we listened to Ashley Campbell sing
her song to honor her father Glen Campbell who was
diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2011.
As part of our commitment to LeadingAge, (Meg
Coffin, Executive Director
of Notre Dame du Lac
Assisted Living is the Chair
of their Board of Directors,
and Notre Dame Health
Care is a long standing
member), Notre Dame
Health Care was a proud
sponsor with LeadingAge
of a pre-release screening
of “I’ll Be Me”, a documentary about Glen’s
battle with dementia.
The movie chronicles
Glen Campbell’s last tour
and his family’s experiences as his disease progressed. At 75 years of
age, Glen successfully
toured the country
performing at over 100
concerts. Supported by
his wife and children,
and using a teleprompter
to aid his memory, he
continued to bring joy to
his fans. You see the light
in his eyes change as he
goes on the stage. For
the span of a few hours
he no longer is someone
who is losing himself,
but he is the ever present
Glen Campbell, most
alive with his guitar in
hand and music in his
heart and soul. At the
screening at the AMC
Loews Boston Common
movie theater, US Senator
Ed Markey was joined
by the director,
FA L L 2 0 1 4
James Keach, producers
Trevor Albert and Kim
Campbell (Glen’s wife),
and two of Glen’s children,
Ashley and Shannon. His
music lives on through his
children who demonstrated
their outstanding talent at
a performance after the
showing.
Senator Markey, whose
mother had Alzheimer’s
disease, is working diligently in Washington to
convince Congress to
increase funding for
Alzheimer’s research.
He shared some startling
statistics with us.
• Today there are more
than 5 million people
who suffer with
Alzheimer’s.
• The cost of Alzheimer’s
care in 2013 in the USA
was $203 billion.
• Additionally, the cost of
“unpaid care” by family
caregivers is estimated at
$216 billion.
• By 2050, 16 million will
suffer from this disease
at a projected cost of
$627 billion. Senator
Markey is asking his
peers to fund research
to “protect our citizens
from this threat”.

harness new discoveries and
developments in health care,
and make decisions about
what services to provide in
order to put forth the best
possible programs for our residents, patients, and clients.
Ongoing learning is tremendously influential with residents and clients who are
trying to age well and stave
off declining health and brain
activity.
Those are just some of the
many reasons why we founded and continue to invest in
our Notre Dame Educational
Bridge Center. Education is at
the heart of all that we do, and
at the core of providing the
very best for our residents,
patients, clients, and families.

An Announcement from Katherine Lemay, CEO
After nearly
18 years at
Notre Dame
Health
Care, I am
preparing
for my next
adventure:
retirement.
I am excited for the new opportunities that this brings for me personally, as well as the opportunity
for an infusion of new leadership,
new ideas, and new energy for
Notre Dame Health Care.
Although, of course, it will be
hard to leave the residents and
staff who have been like family
during my time here.
(continued from page 1)
For those of us who
saw this amazing film,
we were reminded of our
own journey at Notre
Dame Health Care and
the integration of music therapy into
our care for our residents.
• At performances of our resident Bell
Choir and our Drumming Group, one
cannot miss the absolute joy on the
faces of our residents as they perform.
• Numerous times during the year, Mark
Pelletier, the Director of Dietary
Services at ND du Lac, entertains the
residents at the piano. After Sunday
Mass at the ND Long Term Care
Center, residents often join in a “sing
along” to tunes that help them remember happy memories with their loved
ones.
• At our weekly Ageless Grace sessions,
residents exercise to their favorite show
tunes and songs of their era.
• And one of our most touching stories
was told by our music therapist who
works with our residents in the
Namaste Program: A woman who had
not spoken for weeks suddenly began
singing “Take me out to the Ballgame”
with a huge smile on her face.
A committee is being formed under the
leadership of the Board of Directors,
and a national search will be performed
in partnership with a professional
search firm for the next CEO of Notre
Dame Health Care. We anticipate the
timing to be such that our next CEO
will arrive in late spring of next year,
and that I will officially begin my
retirement after a short overlap.
While the leadership will change, the
wonderful community feeling and the
quality of care provided by Notre Dame
Health Care will not ebb. This community is greater than the sum of its parts,
as they say, and I have been proud to be
one part of Notre Dame Health Care. I
look forward to the rest of this final
year with you.
Our thoughts and prayers go out
to the families of all who suffer from
Alzheimer’s and we hope that, in the
words of Glen Campbell, that in the
future there will be “A Better Place”
for all.
“A BETTER PLACE”
by Glen Campbell (August 2011)
~~~
I’ve tried and I have failed, Lord
I’ve won and I have lost
I’ve lived and I have loved, Lord
Sometimes at such a cost
One thing I know
The world’s been good to me
A better place
Awaits you’ll see
Some days I’m so confused, Lord
My past gets in my way
I need the ones I love, Lord
More and more each day
One thing I know
The world’s been good to me
A better place
Awaits you’ll see, ooh
A better place
Congratulations
to Philomena Kiguru on the
beginning of her career as a
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)!
You might remember Philomena
Kiguru from an interview in the
spring 2014 issue of The Healing
Spirit. Since that interview about
her studies in the Notre Dame
Educational Bridge Center, Philomena has
received her nursing pin and her Practical
Nursing certificate from Quinsigamond
Community College, and has passed her state
board exam. Philomena continues to work at
Notre Dame Long Term Care Center in her new
role as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
Comes to Campus
We’ve all known for a while that CEO Katherine Lemay will do whatever
it takes to help our residents, patients, staff, and families. And now we
have proof that “whatever it takes” includes having a bucket of ice water
dumped over her head. Katherine proudly took the ALS Ice Bucket
Challenge, and was soon followed by five intrepid staff members who
were doused with ice water from the bucket of our mini loader. We
encourage you to watch the videos on our Web site or our Facebook page.
State funding for our Pediatric Palliative Care program, fondly known as
Pedi Pals, was renewed July 1st. The team has entered its third year of helping
children who are struggling with life limiting illnesses, and currently serves 75
families in the area. Our Pedi Pals program director, Tracy Larson-Benvenuti,
has also been contacted by other agencies
that are interested in using our program
as a model, and she is educating others so
that they may emulate this successful and
beneficial program for kids and families
across the state and throughout the
Northeast.
