Dear Friends of Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County, We are pleased to present our annual report to the community for fiscal year 2007-2008. This was a very important year for us as the groundwork was laid for Catholic Charities to launch the Campaign to Cut Poverty with Step Up Silicon Valley, a coalition we are leading of more than 90 service organizations, corporations and government agencies, whose goal is to cut poverty in half by 2020 in Santa Clara County. One of the major issues to overcome is the public’s perception of poverty in our valley. Poverty affects more than the homeless people we all see each and everyday in our parks, neighborhoods and downtown areas of the county. We call poverty the level below what households need to make ends meet … with adequate housing, food, health coverage, education and financial resources at their disposal. Gregory R. This past year was a very busy one in many other ways for Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County. Our budget grew by 35% to $21.5 million dollars … and we ended the year in the black. Our staff grew by 26% to 442 people … while the number of clients we served grew by a staggering 37% to more than 37,000 people. El Toro Youth Center in Morgan Hill joined the agency and serves nearly 500 youth and parents through tutorial services, computer literacy classes, arts and crafts, sports, recreational activities and family workshops. As the demands from the community grow, so do our efforts to meet the needs of the underserved and at-risk individuals and families in Santa Clara County. Paul F. But, Mark began attending Catholic Charities’ CORAL after-school program at his middle school. With help from the CORAL staff, problems that had been too complicated for him were broken down into components that he could understand and he began to improve his grades and his comprehension levels. Mark finished the year with mostly A’s and B’s on his report card and advanced to the eighth grade and is continuing to improve his scholastic work. Catholic Charities’ CORAL programs are in 20 Santa Clara County public schools serving more than 3,000 students. Dih Nhai was born and raised in Burma, but the current Myanmar political regime spurred her to leave her homeland in order to survive. As a 15-year-old, she made her way to Malaysia. With little protection under Malaysian law and no opportunity to go to school she tried to blend in. She found a job working more than 11 hours every day – seven days a week. With the help of a pastor, Dih Nhai gained entrance to the United Nation’s refugee center and was selected to go to America. Through Catholic Charities’ Refugee Foster Care program, Dih Nhai was matched with a caring family. She’s an honors student and hopes to work in the pharmaceutical industry someday. Jane came to Catholic Charities two years ago - unemployed, struggling with sobriety, hoping to reunite with her children, and in a relationship with a history of domestic violence. Her counselors from Catholic Charities Behavioral Health division worked with her to begin attending Alcoholics Anonymous and got her a sponsor. Counselors helped her to receive medications that would be more effective in treating her symptoms of depression. She was referred to Catholic Charities’ Focus for Work program and found a part time job that she has been able to maintain. Jane continues to attend a women’s meeting every week, has remained clean, and has been reunified with her children. Decades before the federal government enacted the Americans with Disabilities Act, Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County was implementing a program to bring disabled people into the mainstream. Catholic Charities celebrated the 40th anniversary of its Handicapables program with an event attended by more than 150 people at St. Joseph’s Basilica in San Jose - including the founder of the program, Nadine Calligiuri. Undeterred by cerebral palsy, Nadine formed the support and enrichment program designed to bring disabled people together at Mass and social activities. “Handicapables helps get the cobwebs out of people’s minds,” said Nadine. As part of Catholic Charities’ mission statement, the agency strives to “work to create a more just and compassionate community in which people of all cultures and beliefs can participate.” One means to fulfilling its mission statement is Catholic Charities’ implementation of the national JustFaith program within the Diocese of San Jose. Because of this program hundreds of people are now active, passionate advocates for justice in parishes and in the community. Begun by Jack Jezreel, JustFaith offers programs for Catholics, non-Catholics, and youth with topics ranging from compassion and justice to climate change and prison reform. These workshops are exciting opportunities for parishes and small faith communities interested in promoting social ministry. Jon had run afoul of the law. Making his way on his own through the probationary system seemed daunting, but he found help when he was connected with Catholic Charities’ Probation Support and Enhancement Services team. With the support of Catholic Charities case managers, Jon adhered to his court mandates, completed his community service requirements and stayed out of jail. He is one of more than 200 youth who stayed out of jail through the guidance from Catholic Charities case managers. Intensive case management services are provided by the program’s staff to gang-impacted youth and youth involved in the juvenile justice system. As the leading provider of free tax preparation services in Santa Clara County, Catholic Charities helped families receive more than $685,000 in Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC). Tax payers received a total of $1,503,359 in refunds with each household receiving an average of $1,111. Making gifts of securities that you have held for more than one year allow you to avoid capital gains tax and receive a tax deduction. You can use the stock’s fair market value as your charitable deduction, up to 30 percent of your adjusted gross income. Caritas Society. Caritas, a Latin word meaning “charity,” is an appropriate way to acknowledge individuals who support Catholic Charities each year with generous gifts between $1,000 and $50,000 that strengthen families and build economic self-sufficiency. Cash Gifts. Every dollar contributed helps reduce poverty in Santa Clara County. Please consider making a monthly or annual pledge. We accept transfers of stock and donations of other assets. Contributions are tax deductible and an official receipt will be furnished. Corporate and Foundation Support. Without the financial support of private foundations and corporations, many of our critical programs would not remain fully staffed. We are seeking grant opportunities of all types; event sponsorships; and we appreciate group volunteer projects. Domus Council. The council is a coalition of community and business leaders investing $10,000 - $100,000 annually to provide new affordable housing with supportive services for individuals and families living in poverty. Domus is a Latin word for “home.” Employer Matching Gifts. Catholic Charities is an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation and may qualify for matching funds through your employer. Check with your company to see if your gift qualifies. Family Legacy Endowments. A Family Legacy Endowment to Catholic Charities can be established and named for the family with a pledge of $50,000, which can be completed with annual gifts or a planned gift. Once the endowment fund reaches $50,000, the income it earns is allocated to Catholic Charities programs according to your wishes. Golf Tournament. Join us at our 25th Annual Golf Tournament on June 8, 2009 for a round of golf at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club, lunch, cocktails, dinner, plus live and silent auctions. All proceeds will support at-risk youth, the elderly, the homeless, the mentally ill, and families struggling to make ends meet. Legacy Gifts. Naming Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County as a beneficiary of your will, insurance policy, retirement plan, or trust creates a living legacy of generosity to those in need. The Circle of Hope honors individuals and families who have named Catholic Charities as a beneficiary. Memorial and Honorary Gifts. Memorial gifts perpetuate the values that directed someone’s life. Honorary gifts recognize someone during his or her lifetime, or commemorate a special event or anniversary. Catholic Charities will send appropriate letters of acknowledgement for both types of gifts. Vehicle Donations. Vehicle donations support our Refugee Resettlement Program, which helps survivors of war and trauma to renew their lives.
