Lopez Tenis & Manuela Franco Guzman Funeral—Rite of Christian Burial Christine “Chrissy” Weston Marie Mailliard July 3, 2016 The Pastor’s Keyboard - Msgr. Richard Huneger July 4, 1776, marked the proverbial "beginning" of the Revolutionary War, which led, on the basis of the Declaration of Independence (from Great Britain), to our Independence and Sovereignty as a nation. Well, almost, because it took awhile, and a failed experiment, for the "former colonies" to figure out how to become these "United States" of America. The government was established with a keen distrust toward any "national" or "centralized" power, and with the hopes that the limited powers invested in the national governing institutions would be used in order to maintain and enhance the flourishing of the several States. Restrictions were placed on the federal government (and indirectly on the State governments) with respect to individuals (Bill of Rights), and some restrictions on the federal government (such as "no establishment of religion") over time were also applied to the states. For almost half a century after our Constitution, it was still permitted at the state level to have an "official" religion in order to qualify for full citizenship rights and opportunities. Massachusetts was the last to "disestablish" its State Church, and those who opposed this were called "disestablishmentarians" and their line of thinking "disestablishmentarianism," and that of those who opposed them “antidisestablishmentarianism.” arguably the longest word in English (when I was in grade school), although the favorite word for Anagrams was "grandiloquence," in virtue of having all 5 vowels. Our religious liberty experiment, born of the passionate desire of the original pilgrims and colonists for freedom to express their own religions (different in each colony) has led to a kind of official respect and tolerance, but also marginalization to the level of the personal and private, of religious discourse and action. And our own religious liberty as Catholics (as well as that of others) has suffered a certain erosion in recent years. Pope Benedict XVI back in 2012 asked the US Bishops to make it a primary goal to uphold the autonomy of religious individuals and institutions from government encroachment, and to avoid the silencing of the religious voice in public discussion. It only makes sense in a Democracy, where the ultimate compass for society is the conscience of the people, who decide whether elected officials or legislation is "moral" or "fair," and on the basis of conscience, vote to change the rules of our common life. Without some consensus on where the North Pole is, we are in trouble, for then, there is no basis we hold in common for critiquing what is going on. If whatever the majority decide on is "right," no matter what their decision is, then there is no standard by which our laws can make "moral progress" and become "better" in terms of guiding a society justly. When our country was founded, the Fathers were told we would fail, because the "whim of the populace" was too uncertain a rudder to guide the ship of state. James Monroe argued that we did indeed have a chance of success because 99% of Americans held to the same ethical vision (these were Protestants, with the remaining 1% consisting of Jews, Catholics, and a few Muslims). With the fracturing of that consensus comes an uncertain trumpet in the body politic, in its ability to succeed. Parish Beautification Project Report In coming weeks, watch the Pastor's Keyboard for developments regarding our major parish beautification efforts, especially as we focus on what we can do, to do ourselves proud for Archbishop Vlazny's 80th Birthday Mass here on February 11, 2017. The Rectory Business Office will be closed July 4th. Please have a safe holiday! 1. Gym, Parish Center, and Church -- We currently have $171,000 toward upgrades that are needed. We are still getting bids for the many sub-projects, and will inform you ASAP. Please note that Parking Lot Lighting will soon be installed ($10,000 from an Archdiocesan Safety Grant is helping toward the $29,000 cost), and Parking Lot Striping (so you can see where to park) will soon be done (thanks to a Salem Catholic Schools Foundation Grant). 2. Fresco of St Joseph on the back wall of the sanctuary. We currently have $24,000 toward the $170,000 needed. It will be done in Oct-Dec 2016. A major fundraiser is planned for August. 3. Pipe Organ. We already have the pipe organ (disassembled) in the Gym and Church basement, but it needs to be refurbished and installed. Let's say that it will cost $500,000 or so to do this; we currently have $87,000 on hand, plus a $50,000 major gift pledged, so another $363,000 is needed. Our Vietnamese community is reaching out to the larger archdiocesan Vietnamese community to "Adopt-a-Pipe," and plans for soliciting major gifts are in process.
