This September, Northville Public Schools will celebrate the sesquicentennial of when Northville’s first high school opened its doors. Union School, as it was named, opened on September 4, 1865 on the site where Old Village School now stands. It was the first graded school in Northville and the first to offer an accredited high school curriculum. Union School became the elementary school in 1907 when a new high school was built next door. In 1959, Northville High School opened on Buchner Hill at Center Street and Baseline Road. Undergoing two expansions, it remained the high school until 2000 when the current high school opened on Six Mile Road. Northville High graduated its first student in 1869, Alice Beal. Today, Northville High School boasts nearly 2,300 students but continues its tradition of academic excellence. The Northville Public School district remains a one high school district which provides for a strong sense of community and hometown pride. Union School burned down in 1916 and Northville’s third high school was built on that site. That high school is now known To celebrate the occasion, Northville as Old Village School.
