October Program—Robin Peterson presents:
―The Gate to the Arctic‖ - Art and Adventure!
AMERICA'S SECOND BEST IDEA
You've heard of "America's Best Idea," the National Park System, right? No? Tune in to Ken Burns
PBS special and be inspired. In 1916 the US Congress created the National Park Service with a mandate to;
"conserve the scenery and natural and historic objects and the wildlife therein and to provide for the
enjoyment of same in such a manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations." It would have been simpler for them to just say; "save it for the artists."
Keep it for those who will remind us of what America is all about when we forget. Who knew that we would
need it so badly? Clearly, creating the Artist in Residence Program in the National Parks must have been
America's second best idea. Artists were integral in selling the NPS idea to the public and to congress back
in 1916. Today the artist advocate and interpreter has a similarly vital role in reintroducing us to our national
wilderness heritage as pressures of expansion, commercialism and climate change push against the NPS
mandate to conserve, protect and leave unimpaired.
How do you measure the value of the haunting cry of a
loon, the wolf chorus at dusk? How do you measure the value of
locking eyes with a bear, of walking the caribou highway? What
is the value of a dollar bill against the snowstorm? It is the blessing and burden of artists' to remind a culture as rich as ours that
we don't have far to go to find paradise. A National Park near
you is a good place to
start. The nooks and crannies of paradise are ours to
rediscover and value now
or lose forever. Being an
explorer at heart, I often choose to go a little further out of the way.
This year it was quite a lot further. I found paradise at the top of the
world as artist in residence in Alaska's Gates of the Arctic National
Park. I'm looking forward to sharing that experience with you in slides,
artwork and commentary during PAL's October 22nd meeting, 7 PM at
the new Boys & Girls Club in Gig Harbor. Check out my website under
'sketchbook' for a preview, www.fernwoodstudio.com See you there.

I am so honored to be the new president of Peninsula Art League. We have
so many new beginnings this year: lots of new members, a new meeting place (The
Gig Harbor Boys and Girls Club), and many new fun activities. Please make sure
to share with your board members your ideas, information on exhibiting or educational opportunities, as well as your needs or ideas for programs and workshops.
Our PAL goal is to increase public awareness of the wide range of artists in our locale, give artists an opportunity to exhibit and market their work, and to provide
educational opportunities through various programs and scholarships. An unspoken goal is to support artists by getting them out of their studios to inspire and connect them with
other artists in the community. These are tough times for artists, but there are also amazing opportunities. One of these is a charitable event that will give artists and opportunity to be seen at Tacoma
Art Museum- see the article (page 7) on the ―Chair Affair‖. Another opportunity is the new Still Life
Group, starting just in time to maybe produce some entries for upcoming competitions- see the Still
Life Group article. Yet another activity to support our artists will be upcoming program on pricing
your artwork (especially in this economy) that we hope to have next year.
I personally am taking my enforced time off (I lost my ―day job‖ earlier this year) to take a
view of employment opportunities relating to art work, and to expand my art horizons. I am haunting the Artist Trust website for job opportunities and Calls for Artists. I am reading more books on
art from the library, I am watching films on art and art history from Netflix, and thanks to the digital
conversion (I have an antenna)- I have discovered good art programs on Create TV (part of PBS). My
favorite program is on Plein Air Painting (of course!) called Passport and Palette. I have taken time
to visit galleries and museums. When I spot something good to share- show or program or book- I
will try to list in an ―Artist Enrichment‖ column in our Palette Newsletter. I usually only work in Pastels, but I have also been oil painting ―en plein air‖ this summer. I am doing a large koi sculpture for
my garden, and many mosaic projects. I have taken the opportunity to travel to an International art
conference and to take part in a regional Plein Air Paint Out. All these
things are really getting my mind flowing creatively, making new connections to fellow artists, and developing my art work. I think of serving as
PAL President as part of ―giving back‖ to the art community that has been
so supportive of me. Please watch for opportunities where you can help
PAL too- you’ll find you are the one who gains the most!
Anne Knapp, PAL President

Announcing the first FASTFRAME NATIONAL KIDS' ART CONTEST!
If you have kids, grandkids, neighbor kids or acquaintances in the 6-10 age group, keep reading. Children age 6 to 10 are
invited to pick up a copy of the complete rules at the Gig Harbor Fastframe. They then will create a small piece of art and
drop it off to be displayed with other entries at the Fastframe shop. There are specific rules that must be followed, including SIZE limits and THEME. So be sure to get the rules before you start painting. Or drawing. Any flat medium is
ok. TWO LOCAL WINNERS will be chosen by Fastframe staff. Both receive free framing of their entry. The FIRST
PLACE winner at the Gig Harbor location will have his/her art shipped to California to be judged along with other local
winners from the 300 Fastframe stores across the country. The NATIONAL WINNER will receive a $250 gift card for art
supplies AND a $250 gift card for his/her school, in addition to the free framing. The winning creation will be displayed
on the national website www.fastframe.com. Fastframe is located in Gig Harbor's Olympic Village shopping center with
Fred Meyer, Bartell and McDonald's. Any questions, please call 253-853-3726. Than ks—Cheryl Werner FASTFRAME

You can bring in pictures through November 14.
Here is a sneak preview of one of the paintings that will be
in the 2010 Foss calendar. I learned today that they accepted my candidate painting for this year. I took the reference photo from my stateroom on the Westerdam as we
were pulling away from the pier for an Alaska cruise last
year which gave me a good and somewhat unusual perspective for the picture. I was last accepted for
their calendar in the year 2000 so I have to admit that it
was a thrill to make it again. Doug Michie
My husband Robert and I have just launched a free art workshop listing service on the internet, http://www.artistworkshops.net/. We would like artists
and art organizations to feel free to post and publicize their workshops and
seminars or find one that fits their needs. We encourage artists to check the
site often to find the classes they need.

OCTOBER VIDEO REVIEW
We have just added a new DVD to our library entitled Seven Secrets of Painting Reflections in Watercolor by Steve Rogers. In this 98 minute DVD, Steve walks us through one painting of two sailboats from start to finish. He is primarily a painter of marine subjects, and has been teaching for over
30 years. I didn’t think his “7 secrets” revealed as much useful information as I had hoped, but
maybe some of you might find something new in his material.
I won’t have a chance to get this DVD into our library at Fastframe before this newsletter comes out,
but I will bring it to our next meeting for checking out.

Chair Affair
Here is a great opportunity to get some free publicity for your self
and to help the community. I am taking part in a fun event to
benefit the Furniture Bank called the “Chair Affair”.
This organization provides furniture for foster kids, domestic violence agencies, etc. They are having a benefit auction
that will be held at the Tacoma Art Museum on March 4th, 2010.
Artists who decorate a chair for the auction will get to attend the gala event for free, have their photo and bio with their
chair; and that info will also be used in the program, and publicity. The deadline for the finished chair is February 5th, 2010.
You must register to take part- email Dion Rurik at
drurik@gmail.com to get guidelines, etc.
I bought some chairs (15 chairs for $10! ) at St Vincent
de Paul in Tacoma. I have a few chairs left at my house available for this project and the Furniture Bank will
also try to arrange for a chair for you if you don’t already have a “spare” chair to donate. They need cool artsy
looking chairs that will command a bidding war. You can also use related furniture items (like a bench, etc), or
maybe a small sculpture chair or piece of jewelry chair, or a chair pot! Who knows- your imagination is the
limit (check with Dion if you think it’s too “Out there”!). Contact Anne Knapp for more information at 26567000r at
annemknapp@gmail.com
The October 1, 2 and 3rd Oil Painters of America Paint Out in Gig Harbor
was a wonderful success, even though the weather did not cooperate all the
time. Twenty three artists participated coming from as far away as Port Angeles
and Whidbey Island. Different media were represented and 17 paintings of
Gig Harbor executed over these days are displayed for the month of October
at Harbor Gallery. One painting from each artist was hung for the exhibit.
A good time was had by all, and there is talk of a paint out for next year .
Pat Meras, Dianne Gardner, Mary Stroeing and
Mikki Parkhurst were a few of the artists who enjoyed painting plein air in Gig Harbor—
in spite of the chilly weather.

PAL minutes - Sept 22, 2009
Meeting held at Uddenberg State Farm meeting room, Gig Harbor
Members present: Myrna Binion, Anne Knapp, Mary McInnis, Susan Blaise, Sheri Weitzel, Nan Feagin, Cec Anderson, Patty
McQuillin, Russ and Christy Camerer, Arvid Anderson,
Called to order at 10:05 by Myrna
Election – Susan Blaise offered to do publicity for PAL. Still need a partner for Carol Lemon for programs.
Transition to new roster of officers will take place in Oct meeting. Election was held at the September general meeting.
Equipment – all equipment is at Myrna’s house and needs to be removed as soon as possible.
Regional Show is on track; Sherry Weitzel volunteered to coordinate set up of the reception which will take place on Friday, October 9th from 6 to 8pm; set up is at 5:30pm at the Gig Harbor Civic Center; Myrna will MC the reception; Russ and Christy will take
care of the grids for hanging; Charli Glock-Jackson will write an article for GH Life; ads in TNT, Kitsap Sun; recommend a poster
blitz and/or email blitz with a link to the PAL website rather than rack cards. The show runs from Oct 5 to Nov 13. We need docents to volunteer for the show.
Upcoming PAL shows – the Winter Member’s show is scheduled to be in January 2010 at the Kimball Gallery, with the Spring
Member’s show possibly at the new Boys and Girls club building.
Boys and Girls club site – next years’ meetings are scheduled already beginning with the October 2009 meeting; the Holiday
party is scheduled for December 17th from 7 to 9pm; a room with a kitchen is already rented; we would like to store some equipment
there – will have to find out the possibilities; overhead mirror needs a home; possible trades may be available in lieu of rent; also a
possible show site.
Grant Opportunity through the Pierce County Arts Commission; the deadline is October 16 th; it is for art festivals, community
programs, non-profit, regional show, etc; perhaps a grant for a PAL member to teach at B&G club – this is something that can be
discussed at a member meeting; GH Arts Commission may not be giving any grants next year, so this sounds like an alternative possibility.
Chair Affair Auction – fundraiser for the Furniture Bank; Anne Knapp has chairs for artists to transform for the auction to take
place at Tacoma Art Museum; artists can provide bio and photo to go along with chair; artists will have free admission to gala;
deadline for delivery is February 5th, 2010; the auction takes place during the first week of March.
Gifts for Outgoing Officers – Daniel Smith gift certificates were discussed.
Meeting adjourned at 11:03 pm
Respectfully submitted by Mary McInnis
2009 Report from Scholarship Committee Chair—Sherrie Bonsell
The members of our PAL Scholarship Committee got together in March, April, and June of
2009 at the three area high schools and formed decisions towards granting four student art scholarships.
The first two were at Peninsula High School, where Alice Rowson and Nathan Iversen were selected after viewing their scholarship notebooks and viewing their work. On June 20, they each were
awarded their grants of $750 towards their arts program. Alice is interested in developing her skills
in photography and enjoys working with glass art. Nathan has also set goals for advancing his photography skills.
The third scholarship was given on June 4, at Gig Harbor High School, to Ashley Careaga for
$500. Ashley is interested in photography along with graphic design.
On June 10, Jordan Guerrero, from Henderson Bay High School, received a $500 art scholar8
ship towards advancing his skills in food styling.
MacKechnie-Riley Workshop: by Palette Reporter Pat Rush
I was fortunate to attend the three-day workshop on Fox Island presented by Joe MacKechnie
and Dan Riley.
It felt like two weeks because of all the valuable and varied information they gave us. Topics
included tips on developing your own personal style, design principles, common armatures (the diagrams of constructing your artwork), art history, composition, understanding the color wheel. It was
dealing with any media the students chose to use with videos, lectures, exercises, critiques and how a
juror looks at a show and decides who gets in and wins awards. They gave the students so much to
work with and were very inspiring with their demonstrations. When we approach a scene, for instance, we should get the inspiration from the scene but paint what we don't see, paint the "essence"
and remember we aren't cameras, we are artists! Making decisions about the composition, the focal
point and doing a value sketch is so important to do before we begin the painting. If it doesn't work
in black and white, it won't work in color. Create art OFTEN, throw paint and push your limits!

Subject: Dan and Joe Portrait Workshop
Greetings to all of our Art Composition and Personal Style Alumni,
Our next Creative Portrait Drawing and Painting Workshop is scheduled for next month in
Bothell (Oct 23, 24, 25 from 9am – 4pm daily). We have an inquiry from at least one PAL member
who is interested in attending but is concerned about the commute. I was thinking that because
some of you also seemed interested in the portrait workshop we might be able to set up a carpool or
vanpool from Gig Harbor to Bothell. At least, if a few of you sign up you will be able to use the HOV
lanes all the way and cut down on the commute time somewhat. It might also be fun and make the
trip SEEM shorter than it actually is! Joe and I could sweeten the pot a little in order to help with the
gas by giving PAL members a rate of $240 instead of our usual $250 fee. That way, the more that
sign up the cheaper will be the gas expense. Joe & Dan
Don’t Forget—Members’ Screening precedes the October 22 Meeting—there will not be another
chance to screen before the PAL Members Show in January, 2010. See form for details .
