Registered in Luxembourg IAESTE — ANNUAL REVIEW 2006 Welcome Dear Friends of IAESTE Another year has gone and with it 4838 students have benefited from an IAESTE placement somewhere in the world. Our thanks go to the 4002 Employers and 940 Academic Institutions who so generously supported the programme enabling students, the future leaders and decision makers in their own countries, to not only gain work experience relevant to their degrees, but also to learn about themselves in a different environment, make new international friends and to develop their social, linguistic and communication skills. Since last year IAESTE has been delighted to welcome the following Co-operating Institutions into our family of nations-: Allies International Internship Programs, Inc, Goran Radnović President Pauline Ferguson General Secretary Philippines, The Institute for Engineering Education Taiwan, Manipal Institute of Technology, India, Korea Foundation for Cooperation of Science and Technology (KICOS), Republic of Korea and Thai Nguyen University, Vietnam. We wish them a long and fruitful association with IAESTE. In July 2005 a new venture was launched in some countries which celebrated the IAESTE Day, an event which brought together students, academics and employers to highlight the Association. Congratulations especially to IAESTE Turkey who in their 50th Anniversary year prepared a wonderful IAESTE Day event in July 2005. This year more countries will host an IAESTE Day on 19 October 2006 and we hope that this will be well supported throughout the world. For most of its existence, IAESTE has had an operational relationship with UNESCO and in 2006 the British Council nominated our Association for the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education. Our nomination was forwarded to the International Jury and while we were not successful we are delighted that the profile of our Association was raised in such an international and prestigious organisation. There has been increased interest from Employers in recent months in our FoIN website (Friends of IAESTE Network) which is our Alumni Association totalling over 10,000 members from 128 countries. We see this as an area of great potential for the future and hope that more Employers will become involved in this aspect of the Association. Our public website www.iaeste.org receives on average 950 new visitors per day so we are greatly encouraged by this interest in our Association. Our thanks go to the members of our Internet and FoIN teams for their excellent work throughout the year. In conclusion, sincere thanks go to all the contributors of the Annual Review 2006 and special thanks to our Sponsors, Infineon Technologies AG for their continued support and to the Danish Technical University for hosting our servers. Finally, congratulations to all the Members and Co-operating Institutions which administered the programme so ably to ensure the exchange of students for technical experience throughout the world. 1 International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience Our Organisation The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE A.s.b.l) is an Association of National Committees representing academic, industrial and student interests. Each National Committee is responsible for the administration of the exchange in its own country. IAESTE ANNUAL REVIEW 2006 The Association was founded in January 1948 at Imperial College, London, on the initiative of the Imperial College Vacation Work Committee. National organisations of ten European countries represented at this meeting became Members and Mr. James Newby was elected General Secretary. The geographical coverage was soon to spread to most of Europe and beyond, as new countries were admitted to Membership. 2 The Association became a registered body according to Luxembourg law at its General Conference 2005 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. It is a non-political, independent, non-governmental organisation, in operational relationship with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and maintains consultative relationships with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the International Labour Office (ILO). IAESTE is also in contact with the United Nations Economic Council for Africa (ECA), the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the Organisation of American States (OAS) and the European Union (EU), as well as with other educational non-governmental organisations. National Secretariats and Committees make up the Membership of the Association. Each year the Annual Conference brings together the representatives of these bodies to decide issues of general policy and with the IAESTE Co-operating Institutions to carry out the exchange of offers for training. Prior to the Conference, each Member and Co-operating Institution collects offers from employers willing to receive students from abroad for a temporary training and work experience period relevant to the students’ areas of study, as a complement to their university or college education. The offering Companies or Institutions are expected to pay students a wage sufficient to cover their cost of living during the actual training period. The offers of training are exchanged with other Members and Co-operating Institutions mainly on a reciprocal basis. Through their affiliated universities and colleges, Members and Co-operating Institutions select qualified students to meet employers’ requirements as outlined on the training offer. Details of the selected candidates are sent to the Companies for approval. Participation in the IAESTE exchange is open to bona fide students attending courses at Universities, Institutes of Technology and similar Institutions of Higher Education. For further information about IAESTE please visit our website www.iaeste.org. The Mission and Aims of IAESTE MISSION To operate a high quality practical training exchange programme between Members in order to enhance technical and professional development and to promote international understanding and goodwill amongst students, academic institutions, employers and the wider community. IAESTE operates irrespective of race, colour, sex or creed. AIMS To provide students in higher education with technical experience relevant to their studies. To offer employers well qualified and motivated trainees. To be a source of cultural enrichment for trainees and their host communities. The details of these exchanges are presented in the 2005 IAESTE Activity Report published in November 2005. The exchange took place between 79 Members and Co-operating Institutions from 78 countries and 17 nonMember countries. 4 The 2005 IAESTE Activity Report contains the detail on the bilateral exchanges, study fields of trainees sent and received by each Member and Co-operating Institution, the number of participating Employers and Institutions, training periods, age, nationality and gender of the trainees and other useful comparative information. It includes detail on the exchange with non-Member countries. The report also contains a summary of the administrative procedures, reports from Members and Co-operating Institutions on activity as well as the names of the staff handling the exchange and the addresses of the National Secretariats. Readers interested in this report may order a copy from the IAESTE National Secretariat in their own country or from the General Secretary. Exchange Development in 2005 The total number of trainees exchanged in 2005 was 4838, an increase of just over 1.3% from 2004 and hopefully this trend will continue during the current year. Half of the Members and Co-operating Institutions managed to increase their number of traineeships to incoming students and this was very encouraging. Several countries made a significant increase in the number of placements offered to incoming students, notably, Brazil, Greece, Poland, Spain and Serbia and Montenegro. EU and other European countries and 67.6% of all trainees were received in Europe, a similar situation to 2004. It is encouraging to note that the number of students sent from Africa and Asia increased in 2005. Europe continues to dominate the exchange. In 2005 each Member and Cooperating Institution exchanged on average with 17 other Members and Co-operating Institutions indicating a 13.3% increase from 2004. IAESTE ANNUAL REVIEW 2006 Figure 5: Multilateral exchange 6 25.0% 43.8% Sent to 1-10 members Sent to 11-20 members Sent to 21-30 members Growth of IAESTE There is great interest in IAESTE throughout the world and on average 2 new countries per month contact the General Secretary asking for information on how to join the Association. Many contacts are made through our public website www.iaeste.org which has a daily average of 896 visits, a big increase from last year. Universities or Organisations committed to the Aims of the Association can apply for Co-operating Institution status and each year the Board reviews their progress at their summer meeting. Co-operating Institutions which are no longer conducting an exchange do not have their status renewed. New Co-operating Institutions take 3-5 years to become established and the benefits of this expansion, reflected in the exchange, becomes clear after this period. They are then able to apply for Associate Membership and after a minimum of another 3 years can apply to be Full Members with voting rights. Since 2005, 5 new Co-operating Institutions have been welcomed into the Association. Manipal Institute of Technology, India, Korea Foundation for International Cooperation of Science and Technology (KICOS), Republic of Korea, Allies International Internship Programs Inc, Philippines, The Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan and Thai Nguyen University, Vietnam. 86 Members and Co-operating Institutions in 84 countries constituted the Membership of IAESTE in January 2006. The Association continues to grow outside Europe with increased interest from countries in Central America, Asia and Africa and we would be very keen to expand our Membership in these areas. Reciprocity of the Exchange The IAESTE exchange programme is based on a bilateral balanced exchange between Members. Most Member countries attempt to maintain a balance between outgoing and incoming students but an exact bilateral balance is rarely possible within any given year. Only long-term balance is sought. This flexibility is needed to support the proper allocation of places and the selection of the appropriate students. IAESTE — ANNUAL REVIEW 2006 In 2005, 25 Members and Co-operating Institutions received more students than they sent abroad and this benefited the rest. In total, 554 work experience places were involved or 11.5% of the total exchange. It is traditional within IAESTE for Members with a higher Gross National Income per capita (GNI) to receive more trainees than they send. Strict reciprocity is not implemented with new Members in the early years which allow those in developing countries and those from smaller countries to gather support within their country in order to develop the exchange. Countries with a GNI per capita >12,000 US$ provided 57% of these places in 2005, a traumatic decline from 2004. New and unused offers can be put on the IntraWeb at any time by Members and Co-operating Institutions and this ensures that IAESTE can accommodate students and employer offers as they arise. The year round exchange facilitated by the IAESTE IntraWeb now provides the platform for the quick and accurate exchange of placements between Members and Cooperating Institutions for new and unused offers and also nominations for these places. This must contribute to the effective use of all offers both new and unused, as they become available throughout the year. are acceptable, beneficial to the student and in line with the standards expected of all IAESTE offers. The percentage of offers used as reported by the Members and Co-operating Institutions by category of the available offers were (D) 66.9%, (P) 66.1%, (W) 63.9% and (X) 87.6%. In many instances such training is a required part of the curriculum. The Working In 2005, the first time to collect the data, 233 placements were exchanged via the Intraweb, 5% of the total exchange. Categories of Offers: IAESTE classify placements as Research and Development (D) indicating work of a laboratory nature; Professional (P) is used for professional activities, practical design work and similar; Working environment offers (W) indicate work in the industrial area relevant for the student’s background and category (X) covers non-specific offers. The non-specific (X) offers can be general office jobs, language offers and similar. In all cases it is the responsibility of the receiving National office making the (X) category offers to ensure that the working conditions This continues to be one of our major problem areas. Despite the efforts made to date to minimise losses the number of training places lost or unused remains unacceptably high. Based on the figures reported, the number of lost and unused training offers in 2005 amounted to 2205, 31.2% of the offers received. Employer withdrawals accounted for 14.8% and student withdrawals were 6.7%. In 2005 individual figures show that 16 Members and Co-operating Institutions managed to maintain their total losses below 20% which is similar to 2004. IAESTE Members and Co-operating Institutions must continue to make every effort to minimise these losses, particularly the offers that remain unused. Improvements here would result in the release of additional available places. This should encourage all countries to seek improvements to their existing practices and to examine their communication arrangements. Accurate and timely communications would help reduce student and employer withdrawals and accurate matching of the student skills with those required by the employer would further contribute to minimising the withdrawal of offers by employers. The Farewell Gala dinner, held in the Mediterranean Conference Centre Valletta was attended by the Conference Honorary President and Mr Edward Ebejer from one of the sponsoring Companies, Maltese Enterprise and proved to be a fitting venue for our final event of the Conference. 11 International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience 21st Seminar on IAESTE Development GLASGOW, SCOTLAND, 6-9 APRIL 2006 SID serves as a means to bring together IAESTE Members and Co-operating Institutions to discuss issues of best practice, administration, organisational advancement and development of the organisation. Unlike the Annual Conference, which focuses on the exchange of placements, SID brings delegates together to focus on the development and improvement of IAESTE as an international organisation. Participants form Work groups and work on specific tasks requested by the General Conference sessions from the previous January. The resulting work from the Work groups are refined over the year into recommendations that go back to the IAESTE Board and then to the General Conference for official voting and implementation. IAESTE ANNUAL REVIEW 2006 The Seminar began on the Thursday evening with a welcome reception which took place at the Kelvin Conference Centre where we were served with traditional Scottish fare. Participants were welcomed by Christina Vakomies, National Secretary IAESTE UK who then introduced the SID Co-ordinator Thomas Faltner, IAESTE Austria. 12 This year, 67 delegates attended from 30 countries worldwide including 22 National Secretaries. The work at SID was broken down into four Working groups led by Work group Co-ordinators. With only a few days available delegates worked at a very fast pace in order to produce results by the end of the meeting. The Seminar started with an opening Plenary session to inform delegates of the work which had been achieved since the last SID and the work to be tackled during 2006. Work groups then presented their results at a Group Fair held on the Saturday morning. This consisted of a Poster session which allowed Work Groups to post their results and gather feedback from those participants from other Work Groups. All groups then presented their findings and results at the closing Plenary session where the SID Co-ordinator for 2007 and the venue for SID 2008 were nominated. Glenlee, moored on the River Clyde and the next day participants were treated to some tours to the centre of Glasgow as well as to the Glengoyne Whisky Distillery. Delegates also had the opportunity to share their own culture at the National Evening. This evening provided everyone with the chance to share food and drink from their own country along with cultural dress and dances. This year we were able to learn some traditional dances from a Scottish ceilidh band. However, SID is not only about work. In the short time available, participants spent some time learning about the culture of their host country and got to see some sights too. On the Friday evening, the British Council hosted a Gala Dinner on The Tall Ship, The 21st SID was an overwhelming success. Participants left with a sense of satisfaction from a job well-done and a better understanding of IAESTE UK and its culture. A special thank you to IAESTE UK for their hard work in organising this very important event in the IAESTE calendar. IAESTE — ANNUAL REVIEW 2006 JUMP 2005 IAESTE TRAINING AND MOTIVATION SEMINAR 28 SEPTEMBER – 2 OCTOBER 2005, OSIJEK, CROATIA The 11th IAESTE Training and Motivation Seminar JUMP 2005 took place in Osijek, Croatia and was organised by the Local Committee. 60 delegates from 14 different IAESTE countries followed the slogan “Join Us to Motivate People”. The participants were mainly new members from all over Europe and USA. During JUMP 2004 in Ghent, Belgium, the development potential of JUMP was discussed by some senior members. Due to the fact that many new members are joining the Seminar, it was agreed that the participants should all join different training sessions on specific IAESTE topics. The new model was implemented this year in Croatia. The participants had the opportunity to attend six different training sessions: IAESTE Forms and Intranet and FoIN training, Student Marketing, Company Marketing/Fundraising, Local Committee Management, Summer Reception and Job raising. The sessions were moderated and presented by experienced IAESTE members. The general feedback on the new model was very positive with participants appreciating the good variety of the training sessions. Adrian Keller, IAESTE Switzerland JUMP Co-ordinator The organising team led by Damir Srdanovic provided a very successful programme of events, the highlights being visits to the Lura–Biscuits Company, the natural park “Kopa hi rit” and the sightseeing flight above Osijek. Of course the traditional International and National evenings were not to be missed. Preparations for the next JUMP are already in full swing. The Seminar takes place in Ålborg, Denmark, from 11-15 October 2006. Keep on JUMPing and “Join Us to Motivate People”! This was the IAESTE network. Since then IAESTE South Africa actively participated in the exchange with other Member countries under the hosting organisation, the National Research Foundation. Since our inception IAESTE South Africa has sent 1400 students abroad and received 2239 trainees in our country. Forty five years after South Africa was accepted as a Member of IAESTE, we had the opportunity to host the IAESTE University of Pretoria, South Africa Annual Conference in Durban in January 2001. According to attending delegates, it was a great success. In 2003 the National Research Foundation handed over IAESTE South Africa to the University of Pretoria and IAESTE South Africa went through a complete transition. From being run by full time paid staff at the National Research Foundation it became a volunteer student run organisation. This proved to be a tough time for IAESTE South Africa but thanks to the help and guidance of other Members we are now beginning to find our feet in the workings of the new A.s.b.l Association. IAESTE South Africa is in the process of rebuilding its reputation. On a personal note, as the new National Secretary of IAESTE South Africa, I would like to thank all Member countries who offered their help and knowledge at the General Conference 2006 and to those who already helped me so much when I needed information. PJ van Ginkel National Secretary, IAESTE South Africa IAESTE — ANNUAL REVIEW 2006 FORTY YEARS OF IAESTE LEBANON Institution for IAESTE Lebanon, which is the situation today. Dr Fadl Moukaled, National Secretary IAESTE Lebanon with former National Secretary Dr Albert Kuran and staff from the Careers Centre FEA During these years IAESTE Lebanon managed to send 1027 students abroad and received 328 students, exchanging on average with 9 countries in recent years. In spite of past difficulties we are nevertheless proud to be a Member of the IAESTE family. On behalf of the former National Secretaries, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all IAESTE Members for the support they provided us with over the past 40 years. I am delighted to be involved with IAESTE and happy to be able to meet with the warm IAESTE family. I am confident that IAESTE Lebanon will continue serving the IAESTE Aims. ANNIVERSARIES It gives me great pleasure to announce that IAESTE Lebanon has been a Member of IAESTE for forty years. IAESTE Lebanon joined the Association in 1966 with the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (FEA) at the American University of Beirut (AUB), Saint Joseph University, The Lebanese University, and the Lebanese Chamber of Commerce as the supporting Institutions. The unfortunate events that took place between 1975 and 1990 resulted in “Saint Joseph University” and “The Lebanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry” ending their role as supporting Institutions. This resulted in the FEA at the AUB becoming the only supporting 15 International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience TEN YEARS OF IAESTE IN AUSTRALIA IAESTE ANNUAL REVIEW 2006 It is now almost eleven years since we were visiting friends in Canada who just happened to be the National Secretary of IAESTE Canada and his wife, and first discussed taking on the role of establishing IAESTE in Australia. It is just over ten years since Australia then became a Member of IAESTE in January 1996. It is hard to believe that a whole decade has passed since that week in Copenhagen. 16 What has a decade of IAESTE in our country meant? In terms of the obvious benefit to individual students it has meant that 640 Australian students from universities in all our States and Territories have worked overseas (this includes 422 reserved offer students) and 275 students from 39 countries have worked here for 44 different companies and research organisations in all States and Territories. We have a National Committee with representatives from universities and industry from around the country and we have a home. By the end of 1997 we had both retired as academics but our university, Swinburne, has continued to house us as a hosted organisation. So we think we are now established here and poised to move forward. But what are our outstanding memories? Well to start with, convincing our university that applying for Membership as a Co-operating Institution was a good idea - no easy task, as we were to discover that almost nobody had heard about IAESTE in Australia and we were not overwhelmed with enthusiasm. Then wondering what on earth we had let ourselves in for as we read a copy of an Administrative Guide which we had been sent to help us prepare for our first General Conference. Nevertheless we set off for this with lots of enthusiasm, four placements and no students. We returned home exhilarated by the Conference and the people we had met there and discovered our next problem. We had to find students to send to the countries which had given us placements and what is more we had to find them by March 31. This was not easy given that our students were still on their long summer vacation and were not going to return to university until early to mid-March. Again people were very patient with us and we eventually sent six Australian students away that year. We had also witnessed the night of fun and camaraderie that is the National Party in our first year and came prepared the next year. After much wracking of our brains to find an Australian costume and food, we had come with hats worn by our “swaggies” decorated with hanging corks to keep the flies off their faces in our hot summer and kangaroo salami as an Australian food. We have kept this theme since and it culminated this year when we brought a blow up plastic kangaroo which was much more popular than we had expected. It also had more stamina than we had expected and finished a night of dancing in better shape than many of the rest of us we suspect! There have been low times too, as we all experience in such a position, so why did we persevere? We did so because of the highs. Having students arrive at the airport after twenty four hours of travelling to reach us, and being told that no, they did not want to rest because they were just so excited at being here, is unexpectedly rewarding. Reading the letters and e mails from students telling us what a difference IAESTE has made to their lives is wonderful. Watching the face light up of an Australian student, who came from Vietnam originally, while he was telling us how thrilled he was with his work experience and living in a dorm with students from so many other countries is wonderful. And hearing that when it was his turn to cook a typical meal from his home country, he did not cook a stir-fry, but rather an Aussie BBQ is wonderful. And the biggest high for us at a personal level is having met so many committed, caring and fun people over the last eleven Annual Conferences. That has been wonderful. We have had reinforced the idea that putting people together from all around the world to work together to help others can be a co-operative, harmonious and beneficial experience done with a lot of goodwill and good humour. That has been wonderful and we thank you all for it. Geoff and Jacki Hill President and National Secretary IAESTE Australia IAESTE — ANNUAL REVIEW 2006 Welcome to New Co-operating Institutions in… BULGARIA UNI GROUP – Bulgaria was accepted in IAESTE in 2005 as a Co-operating Institution, but our first real experience with IAESTE was our attendance at the Annual Conference in Malta in January 2006. We are proud that UNI GROUP was given the opportunity to represent this great organisation in Bulgaria. we are promoting IAESTE through other Bulgarian organisations which deal with international exchange programmes. We are currently negotiating with branches of the Technical University in Sofia, as well as with quite a lot of Bulgarian companies which we hope will receive students in 2007. UNI GROUP is making every effort to make IAESTE more popular in Bulgaria so that we can send and receive many participants each year, following the example of already developed Committees in such countries as UK, USA and Germany. During the last year UNI GROUP has promoted IAESTE to all Bulgarian Universities which offer technical majors. Besides that Niya Koeva and Yordan Pashov from UNI GROUP Bulgaria 2006 is our first year of exchange with countries such as Austria, Germany, Spain, Denmark, Portugal, UK, France, Belgium, Sweden, Finland and Switzerland. Participating in the Annual Conference in Malta has helped us a lot in getting to know the structure of IAESTE. It gave us the opportunity to meet in person the representatives of the other countries and to learn from their experiences. We have received a lot of helpful advice from Members who are experienced in the exchange process. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has offered their constant support and patience in answering all of our questions. 17 International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience CHINESE TAIPEI IAESTE ANNUAL REVIEW 2006 IEET was attracted to two core elements of IAESTE, the practical experience and the internationalisation of educational experience. These are the same principals we promote through our accreditation work and that is why we joined the IAESTE family. Through the IAESTE activities, we hope to expand the knowledge horizon and world view of our students in Taiwan and we also hope that students from the world would come here and see what we can offer. 18 Our first Annual Conference was memorable in nearly every aspect. Starting from the hosting country, Malta, which is beautiful in its landscape and its people. None of us in our delegation had ever been to Malta, so that was a very sweet and exciting experience for us. In our observations, IAESTE is wonderful because of its people. This is something we experienced first hand for the first time at the Conference. Over the course of the meetings, we had the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and we learned so much information and on top of everything else, many of them were very young! We were most amazed by the amount of confidence, knowledge and the positive attitude of these young folks. In addition, the most unforgettable experience to me has to be the amazing support that we received. Because of a late start, we did not bring many offers to the Conference, yet, many countries were willing to trade and agreed to wait for our offers. I was moved by this sense of trust and open-mindedness. And, of course, how could anyone forget the International Night! The experience of the diverse food, music, costumes, languages… that will stay with us for a very, very long time. We hope to see you again soon and thanks so much for the wonderful experience in Malta and to be part of the IAESTE family. Mandy Liu, IEET WELCOME The Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan (IEET) was admitted as a new Co-operating Institution in IAESTE in 2005, which was a very exciting time in the history of our organisation. IEET is the recognised accreditor of college and university programmes in engineering in Taiwan. The purpose of accreditation is to ensure the quality of the education students receive. Currently, the Company provides employment opportunities for over 1000 employees who operate its six different “daughter” Companies. theoretical knowledge into practice and for expanding the horizons of their knowledge of developing technologies. The Company does its best to provide foreign students with fruitful and meaningful internships. Many foreign students with majors in Food Technology and Engineering Sciences have had their internships in associated firms “MMK” and “Saykhun”. In addition, many Tajik students who gained work experience abroad through IAESTE are now working in the firms and the Companies appreciate the skills and experience former students bring to their jobs. BARS associated firms are working successfully and profitably. The firm and its employees and specialists put all of their efforts into increasing the productivity and efficiencies of their respective branches. This is the major thing that attracts me most in this Association. With sincere aspiration we will remain permanent partners with IAESTE to stay in the process of providing industries and businesses with well qualified specialists. PERSPECTIVES Bars is one of the most rapidly developing Companies in Tajikistan. 19 International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience THE ACADEMIC who promotes… PROFESSOR PASCAL VERDONCK, GHENT UNIVERSITY, BELGIUM IAESTE ANNUAL REVIEW 2006 Since the start of my research group “Cardiovascular Mechanics and Biofluid Mechanics” in 1996, we have received at least one IAESTE trainee each year. This summer, three students from Denmark, Croatia and Spain will receive training in our laboratory. They will be integrated into ongoing research projects and will be able to realise a student-specific dedicated task under the supervision of an engineer and in collaboration with a medical doctor. The current topics vary from modelling of cell behaviour in a bio-artificial liver, to modelling, simulating and programming software for non-invasive assessment of blood vessel function using ultrasound-based technology. During their training, our IAESTE students are thus provided with the opportunity to have a hands-on view on Biomedical Engineering research and prototyping which might lead to future clinical diagnosis modalities and therapeutic technology. This level of exchange became available thanks to IAESTE Belgium. 20 IAESTE Belgium was one of the Founding Members of the International Association back in 1948 and has been a loyal and active Member ever since. Although Ghent University and the Free University of Brussels are currently the only two actively participating universities, no less than 70 visiting students will be trained in Belgium this year, while at least 60 Belgian engineering students will go abroad for their first international engineering experience. The whole process involves 130 students and more than 100 professionals in Belgium to guide them to their full potential. The Local Committee in Gent, whose administrative responsibility started in 1995, has always been an active member. Before that, there was some administrative support from National or Regional Employer Societies. Back in 1998, we convinced our Faculty Board to invest in a full-time professional for public relations, including administrative support for IAESTE Belgium. Thanks to this vision, we have been able to start a well structured organisation that guarantees a solid framework with continuation, independent of rotating academics, administrators, students, etc. The headquarters are situated in the main building of the Engineering School at Ghent University and are managed by the Local Committee President, Tim Vanden Berghe and by our public relations officer from the Engineering Faculty, Annelies Vermeir who is also the National Secretary of IAESTE Belgium. Besides the increasing interest from incoming and outgoing students (a growth of more than 60% during the last three years), we should also highlight the organisation of the 10th JUMP “Training and Motivation Seminar” in 2004 (29 September – 3 October) at Ghent University, with 60 participating delegates from 16 different countries. In Belgium, IAESTE offers the opportunity for students to be trained in an international environment, to experience new cultures and to gain a unique experience in an engineering lab. Each year, the incoming trainees can count on a warm welcome and the unforgettable hospitality of a local group of enthusiastic students. Annelies Vermeir, National Secretary and PR-officer of the Engineering Faculty of Ghent University (left) visits Professor Verdonck and two of his international students (right) Our lab members are delighted to meet these young enthusiastic trainees. Even more exciting, is the fact that we still have contact with some of our former students who are now working for an international biomedical engineering company, or who are running their own small-sized company. We received students from as far as Lebanon, and our latest trainee, Paul, whom we trained in 2005, is now making a Master thesis at the TU Trondheim about heart valve modelling. This topic came up by accident during one of the many discussions in our lab and proves his personal curiosity to look further than the scheduled tasks. Our staff is very motivated to yearly invest some fascinating time in new potentials, to share with them our laboratory life and of course integrate them in the rich social and cultural life of our city. This process started all by accident but is now continued with a big heart. I can only recommend my academic and industrial colleagues to support this non-governmental organisation IAESTE. Open your door and let students share your professional experience so that they remain motivated to invest in a better future and welfare in favour of all. IAESTE — ANNUAL REVIEW 2006 THE STUDENT who benefits … JOSE MIGUEL PARLONA – A GREAT IAESTE EXPERIENCE! Along with other students I took different examinations and participated in many interesting Conferences given by Professionals who worked in one of the most prestigious Master Business Schools in Peru. After being evaluated, I was selected by the National Committee. My dream was coming true but ironically I could not go because the traineeship I was given clashed with my University exams so I decided not to go but to finish my Mechanical Engineering Studies by the first semester of 2006 and to prepare myself again to be part of this group and finally I achieved it. IAESTE Process 2005-2006, People Government Conference The process 2005-2006 demanded hard work. Because I had already been through the selection process I wanted to help and participate in the activities of the National Committee. I was asked to give some Informative Conferences in my University and did it with a lot of excitement and responsibility. Furthermore, I had the chance to visit The Lima Children’s Hospital every Sunday and did some social work there with other candidates. It was spectacular and shocking at the same time talking to the parents or relatives of the children who told us how hard is for them, not only to afford medicine, but also to leave their work from the countryside to be with their children in the capital of Peru. This is when I realised how important IAESTE is in my community: not only getting skilled in technical experience but also promoting international understanding and goodwill between people and trying to create better life conditions. Many candidates applied for IAESTE placements but in the end only seventeen succeeded in getting a traineeship. Since 2001 when IAESTE in Peru was established twenty five students have benefited from an IAESTE placement so each year we manage to increase the number of traineeships. The ruins of Macchu Picchu, “The Lost City from the Incas” discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911 By August 2005 the selection process was already completed. Now it was time to prepare the International Students Reception Committee which welcomed students from Finland, Serbia and Montenegro and Colombia. We spent a beautiful one-week trip to Cusco, the main archeological city in South America and the capital of the Inca Empire. We were able to appreciate a lot of historical walls and ruins, green landscapes full of the history of the Incas, the white splendour and magic from La Cordillera de los Andes and the spectacular Lost City of Macchu Picchu. One of the most memorable times during this seven day trip happened in a Children’s Shelter called “La Esperanza” where young La Esperanza Children’s Shelter, Cusco 2005 children showed us that hope is not a utopia but is living with kindness and tenderness. We spent the best morning ever sharing, dancing, singing and playing games with them. While there we participated in a birthday party for a seventeen year-old girl so the chocolate cake and sodas we got were special for this lovely and impressive day. It was really touching when all of us sang the Happy Birthday song and this cute girl expressed her emotion by dropping innocent tears. It was the first time in years that she had had a party and we were lucky to be there with all of them. Back in the city, a Swiss trainee had arrived and he with the other trainees continued their placements at Telefónica del Peru, a Communications Company in my country and during their time there were working on IP systems. At the end of their traineeships all of them were glad to have worked in this big Company. Andrés, Eric, Antti, Marko and Jose at the Cusco Main Square, Perú Finally, I wish to express my gratitude to the IAESTE Peru National Committee. They were the ones who allowed me to meet not only good friends but also helped me to focus on the goals I have in life. My next step is Austria, a great country where I am going to work in August 2006 and I think this will be another “Great IAESTE Experience”. José Miguel Pariona Lártiga PERSPECTIVES This story began when a couple of friends told me to register for the IAESTE Selection Process 2004-2005 and since that moment my goals were focused through one horizon: not only being a good student but also growing as a human being and professionally! 21 IAESTE Students at work Brazil Japan Northern Ireland Austria Poland Sweden and at play Germany Thailand Republic of Ireland Norway Peru China Serbia & Montenegro International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience Trainee of the Year Awards 2005 IAESTE ANNUAL REVIEW 2006 The 58 years of the IAESTE programme have seen many thousands of students travel to gain work and cultural experience abroad. The fact that IAESTE has gone from strength to strength and grown in size from its original 10 countries to more than 80 is evidence of the relevance and success of the programme. However, the adventures, the cultural insights, the friends made and the great times experienced by the IAESTE trainees are often untold. The IAESTE Trainee of the Year Award is an event which gives trainees an opportunity to tell the story of their experiences whilst also showcasing the programme’s benefits to employers, sponsors, parents, participating bodies and other students. In recent years the Trainee of the Year award has been successfully held in the Republic of Ireland, Switzerland and the UK amongst others. While each country brings its own particular twist to the event the basic format remains similar. Recent trainees give a short presentation, replete with photos and anecdotes, on their host country, their traineeship and their overall experience. The enthusiasm and regard of students for IAESTE is evident in each different presentation and is an invaluable source of motivation for employers, students and also IAESTE itself. 24 On 22 November 2005, the fourth IAESTE Ireland Trainee of the Year event was held in University College Dublin. Nine students gave presentations on their experiences of China, Austria, Switzerland, Canada, the USA, the UK and Germany. Orla McKeever, a Civil Engineering student from Dundalk Institute of Technology walked away with the top prize, after her presentation on her time with Bernard Ingenieure in Austria. Orla’s genuine enthusiasm and appreciation of the IAESTE Programme shone through during her presentation. The University of Applied Science Winterthur was the venue for IAESTE Switzerland’s Trainee of the Year event on 23 November 2005. From the 10 participating trainees, Stefan Trenkle emerged triumphant after his presentation on his IAESTE experiences in Iran. Over 60 people attended the event which also had presentations from students who had been in the UK and Egypt amongst other countries. IAESTE in Northern Ireland also showcased their students’ experiences with a Trainee of the Year event. Held in Queen’s University on 31 October 2005, the winning presentation was given by Kevin Quinn on his traineeship in Norway. As an added bonus, Kevin also qualified to take part in the overall UK Trainee of the Year event and went on to take third place in that event. The winner of the eighth UK Trainee of the Year event, which was held at the British Council in London, was Ingrid Orme, an architecture student from Edinburgh College of Art. Ingrid did her IAESTE traineeship in an architecture firm in Brazil. Ingrid’s traineeship has inspired her to follow a career in architecture and humanitarian relief and plans, this year, to do an internship in the UN’s Human Settlement division. These trainees’ presentations, short though they are, bring the IAESTE Programme to life. Enthusiasm, motivation, confidence and inspiration are all evident benefits that both students and employers can gain from participation in the programme and which are visible at each Trainee of the Year Award. While the award events rely on the participation of the trainees, also essential to the proceedings are the judges, sponsors and hosts, who are too numerous to mention in this short space. Without their gracious and invaluable assistance, the Trainee of the Year events would not be the success that they have become. Today 13 volunteers from 8 countries are involved in IDT. The services include anything which the organisation requests, such as web and e-mail services. The web services include a private website, the IAESTE IntraWeb and provide technical assistance for the Friends of IAESTE Network, FoIN. Csaba Stoia IDT Co-ordinator The IDT maintains the public Internet pages, www.iaeste.org, which provides information on IAESTE and links to all Members countries’ home pages and contact details. Friends of IAESTE Network (FoIN) The International IAESTE Alumni organisation; Friends of IAESTE Network (FoIN) is now celebrating its 10th year of prosperous activity in IAESTE. Today we can count more than 10,000 members in our strong network which was first organised on an international level in 1996. IAESTE has a distinguished tradition of keeping in touch with former trainees, as a result of which the Friends of IAESTE Network has successfully brought Alumni together from around the world. There is no doubt that many of our members feel a strong allegiance to IAESTE as this organisation has influenced their personal life and careers to a great extent. Maryam Farahani FoIN Co-ordinator The main purpose of FoIN is to make it easy for National IAESTE organisations to keep in touch with their alumni in order to support the concept of student exchange and international understanding. Members receive the FoIN quarterly Newsletter about FoIN activities, news from members and reports from trainees as well as IAESTE upcoming events. Members can also find former friends they have made through IAESTE with a search function in the network. To become a member of the friends of IAESTE Network please visit our website and sign up: http://www.iaeste.org/friends Seminar on IAESTE Development (SID) SID serves IAESTE by bringing together IAESTE Members and Cooperating Institutions to discuss issues of best practice, administration, organisational advancement and the development of the organisation. Unlike the Annual Conference, which focuses on the exchange of traineeships, SID provides a structured forum for delegates to discuss ideas and actions to improve IAESTE as an International organisation. Work Groups on specific tasks requested by the General Conference, Thomas Faltner IAESTE Board and the Membership at large provide the topics to SID Co-ordinator be discussed at SID. In addition, a number of ongoing tasks such as Mentoring, General Conference Introductory sessions and updating of IAESTE forms and materials are tackled by SID. The results from the Work Groups are refined over the year into recommendations that go back to the Board and then to the General Conference for official voting and implementation. The IAESTE Ombudsman The post of Ombudsman was created by a decision of the 2001 General Conference of IAESTE held in Durban, South Africa. The Ombudsman is an independent person, to whom students can report complaints about unfair treatment, with the aim of arriving at a fair settlement. The Ombudsman reports to the General Conference each year about all incidents reported to him from students. He also proposes measures to prevent similar incidents in future. Bernardo J Herold, the former National Secretary of IAESTE Portugal, is the IAESTE Ombudsman. For further information on the Ombudsman please go to www.iaeste.org or contact him at ombudsman@iaeste.org or write to: Office of the Ombudsman, P.O Box 1066 2771-901 Paço de Arcos, Portugal IAESTE Worldwide Members and Co-operating Institutions Full Members 1.
