Business Outlook
Kudos to the City and the Blasters
At the end of last summer, the City began the effort to completely rebuild Joe Becker Stadium
as part of the effort to bring professional minor league baseball back to the community. The
goal was to replace the existing aluminum bleacher stands and concrete block concession and
press area with a totally new, modern stadium with the amenities found in professional baseball venues. And the work was to be completed in time for the Blasters’ opening game May 21,
a time period of seven months.
City staff did a lot of the initial work in tearing down the old stands, clearing out the few
houses on what is now the parking lot and generally getting everything prepped for new construction. In the meantime, local architect Chad Greer was working with the City on a design
that would be functional and cost-effective, yet carry a historic “brick” look as a tribute to the nearly 100-year history
of the site.

As soon as the site was ready, Crossland Construction, the bid winner, began building the stadium. The fall wasn’t bad,
but we all know the winter was not the best we have ever had for construction, and the spring rains didn’t help the
effort. Yet, construction crews worked around the clock in the final days to finish the stadium, and City staff completed
the parking area and had the field done enough for an exhibition game on Tuesday, then finished up in time for opening night on Thursday. It was a great effort on the part of lots of companies and individuals as well as the City to make
the new Joe Becker a great place to play ball.
On the Blasters’ part, owners Shawn and Gabe Suarez worked tirelessly to create a brand new team. They hired key
staff, recruited talent and also spent a lot of time at the stadium, making sure the team had its input into the “feel”
they wanted for the fans, as well as the teams. Your Chamber’s Newman Innovation Center made space available for
the Suarez family and their staff. We saw first hand the dedication they have for the sport, but they also have a passion
to bring good team play and good entertainment to this community they hope to call home for many years to come.
I say entertainment because it is not just about the game, but also about the engagement. There are contests for the
kids, and for those who still think they are kids, that bring them onto the field. There is music and the concessions and
a family-friendly atmosphere. The Blasters came to opening night ready to play and to be a part of the community.
But, they can’t play to an empty stadium. The weather still hasn’t been the most cooperative, but that will change soon
as we move into summer. The people here in our region have said time and again they want affordable family entertainment; they want the opportunity to have professional sports and they want a place at which they like to be. It’s
here, and the business community needs to lead the way in keeping it here. Of course, there are tickets for individual
games. There is also the “party deck” that can be rented for groups of customers or employees. There are opportunities to have boxes or a section of seats. In short, there are ample opportunities to have a good time with customers,
suppliers, employees, families and friends. And, just for fun, Friday home games always end with fireworks.
The new Joe Becker and the Blasters are great additions to our community. Kudos to both the City and the Blasters
organization. But they are part of many exciting and positive things going on right now. It is too easy to focus on the
negative news. It is understandable to think some aspects of Joplin’s rebuilding are taking too long, until you see the
complexity of what is underway. But an evening at Becker, watching baseball, enjoying the facility and taking a break
from hectic everyday “stuff” is a reminder that we have come a long way in four years and that more good things are
on the horizon.
As I overheard one person say to his friend opening night, “It’s great to be an American, especially when you live here.”

Isaac Newton once said, “If I have seen further than
others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.”
Mentors lift us up to see our potential and imagine
our future. Young professionals need mentorship both
formally and informally. Mentors inspire, challenge and
support us through career and life decisions.
Although I have experienced a lifetime of informal
mentoring, I was hesitant to join a formal mentoring
group in the Young Professionals Network (YPN). I now
see it as one of the most valuable pieces of my personal
and professional growth. Led by Gary Duncan, our group
meets twice a month to discuss obstacles, opportunities
and successes. Lending perspective, advice and
sometimes tough feedback, Gary challenges our group to
be our best and never settle for sub-par results.
Gary is just one of our Leadership League “coaches”
investing in the future of young professionals. The
complete lineup includes Ann Leach, John Hipple, Vicky
Mieseler, Peggy Fuller, Troy Richards and Joe Craigmile.
Coaches meet with their team on a regular basis to share
knowledge, facilitate conversation and offer sage advice.
Inspired by Leadership League, a new generation
of mentors are stepping up to the plate this summer.
College students transitioning from the Super Leaders
leadership development program to YPN membership
will be matched with a young professional. Mentors will
help students build relationships and grow the confidence
needed to transition into an active YPN member.
This month I’d like to challenge you to look for
opportunities to mentor a young professional. The most
valuable commodity you have to offer is your time and
experience. You will be investing in the future of Joplin.

Athletes involved in women’s sports at Missouri Southern State
University presented a check for more than $10,000 to the
Freeman Foundation during the Athletics Awards Banquet May
4. Throughout the last school year, athletes sold pink T-shirts and

A limited-time scholarship initiative has been launched by the
Missouri Southern Foundation to help increase the value of new,
endowed scholarships for students at Missouri Southern State
University. Under the Southern Match program, the Foundation
will place an additional $10,000 from its undesignated scholarship
funds into each newly endowed scholarship created. The minimum
principal amount under this initiative would be $20,000, with half
coming from the donor and half from the Foundation. For more

The New Normal: Four Easy Steps to Holding People Accountable
Business Outlook
Lots of managers espouse the importance of
holding people accountable. But truth be told, most
avoid it like the plague. Fear of not being “fair,” fear
of appearing heavy handed, fear of not being liked.
It’s time to stop the hand-wringing and get down to
basics.
First, use the job description as your main source
for accountabilities. Use it as the basis for hiring or
promoting people into a position. It’s an objective
way to screen candidates and assure they will have
the skills and experience to do the job. Ask for
specific examples of how they have performed these
functions in the past. Remember, the job description
provides the major accountabilities. It is not a
procedural “how-to” document.
Share the job description
with the incumbent so they
know their accountabilities.
Verify that there is agreement
about the major accountabilities
and let them know this will be
used for training, coaching and
performance feedback.
Because the job description is
focused on job accountabilities,
other job descriptions can
be used to assist people who
want to expand their skills,
responsibilities or explore other opportunities.
Second, have KPIs: Make sure you have objective
ways to measure and monitor key performance
indicators (KPIs) and communicate those methods
to the people performing the jobs. KPIs need to be
aligned with strategic objectives and initiatives, and
involving the incumbent in the process of identifying
ways to monitor and measure success will ensure
more buy-in than if KPIs are handed down from
“on high.” Follow though by providing feedback
about performance. Successful managers know it’s
their job to manage both people and processes.
They communicate expectations, monitor the key
performance indicators to assure things are on track
and communicate information on a timely basis.
It’s important that employees have the
opportunity to provide input and feedback if the
measures or KPIs aren’t realistic or relevant and why.
After all, they are the ones doing the job, know it best
and want to do a good job.
Third, stop overcompensating for underperformers. Here’s the deal: Holding people
accountable isn’t always easy, particularly with people
who are under-performing. Sometimes managers
think it’s easier to do the work themselves, or they
can do it better, or it will take less time than to train
and monitor and coach someone else.
The question then becomes, is it easier to do your
work as a manager and their work, or to hold them
accountable? Unless you are willing to communicate
expectations, provide the resources for people to
do their jobs and hold your people accountable,
you’re the one who is under-performing and not
accountable.
Fourth, accountability is
a two-way street. Remember
that employees have to be
accountable for their own
performance. If a manager
provides clear expectations,
timely and objective feedback
and opportunities for coaching
or training to improve, then
it’s up to the person to be
accountable for the results
produced. It then becomes their
choice to be accountable.
For accountability to be the new normal,
organizations must align human resource and
operational policies and practices with strategic
objectives. That means having a good performance
management system, the right compensation and
reward structures, and training and development
opportunities in place to support job performance and
corporate objectives.
The result will be alignment, integrity and
effectiveness.
That’s accountability. That’s success. That’s the
new normal.

Creating Your Competitive Advantage

comes from
repeat customers;
customers that
boast about your
product and
service, and that
bring friends with
them.” The key to
obtaining profit is to having a sustainable competitive
advantage.
A competitive advantage is a unique benefit that
your company offers your primary customers (i.e.
target markets) that differentiates you from your
competitors (i.e. fast service, high client retention,
open 24/7, high referral rate, well trained and
knowledgeable employees, innovative technology,
etc.). A competitive advantage enables your company
to create superior value for its target markets and
higher profits.
Ask yourself, who are your best customers and
what are you doing to satisfy their needs? Who are
your competitors and what are they doing to satisfy
customers’ needs?
Your strategic plan and the success of your business
will depend upon your ability to gather competitive
intelligence on a continual basis, analyze your
competitors, plan on how you can effectively deal
with them, and then take action. Remember, it’s all
about the customers’ perception of your company
and your competitors. Your customers’ “perceptions”
are “reality” to them. Customers will usually buy from
the company they believe will best meet their needs
(i.e. selection of products/services, hours of operation,
customer service level, convenient location, expert
advice, good website, credit card acceptance, etc.).
Discover your company’s image in relation to your
competitors in the marketplace. This is referred to
as your “position” in the marketplace. You will need
to carefully analyze your customers’ view of your
company and your competitors. During this process

consider what your company does better than your
competitors, what the competitors do better than
your firm, and what you can do to overcome the
competition.
Consider using the following steps to analyze your
competition:
1.Research information about your competitors
by using the Internet. Check out their websites to see
what type of new or existing products/services they
offer, certifications, trade organization endorsements,
etc. Read customer comments in industry-related
blogs. Examine product/service reviews and ratings.
2.Talk to your competitors’ salespeople,
distributors, customers and employees. Look for ways
to improve your company.
3.Survey your current and former customers
about their opinions of both your company and your
competitors. Get your sales force or employees to
gather information from customers and prospective
customers. Ask your customers to tell you what their
best and worst experiences have been in dealing with
your company. Ask them what they would like to see
changed in your company.
4.Examine your competitors’ advertising and
promotional techniques. Watch, listen and read your
competitors’ advertising messages.
5.Shop your competition. Visit and purchase from
their store, website, etc., to better understand their
methods of operation, products and services.
You need to track the preferences of your target
markets regularly by staying in constant contact with
them and altering your products/services accordingly.
Continue to stay in touch with changing preferences by
informal face-to-face discussions, in-store surveys and
feedback requests in your store or on your website.
This process of gathering competitive intelligence
will enable you to determine the competitive strengths
and weaknesses of your company in comparison to
your competition; carefully examine the opinions of
current and former customers; refine your company’s
competitive advantage and image; and then target
new prospects and increase your profitability by
advertising your competitive advantage.
