SEPTEMBER 2015 Dr. Wilson Decides to Smell the Roses Inside this issue: Dr. Wilson Decides to Smell the Roses 1-2 Dr. Irene Walt Goes to Her Final Reward 3-5 2015 Midwest Surgical Association Annual Meeting 6 Reports from the Outfield 7-9 2015 WSSS Dues Notice 10 WSU Monthly Conferences 11 WSSS 12-13 Dr. Robert F. Wilson (WSUGS/TS 1963/65), the senior surgeon in our department, has decided to retire from active surgery effective August 31, 2015. Dr. Wilson did his medical training at Temple University, where he graduated in 1958 and came to WSU for his general surgical and thoracic surgical training, finishing in 1965. Bob then became a faculty member and has had an illustrious career in general surgery. During his early years, he was honored by being the recipient of the John Markle Scholarship in Academic Medicine. His Robert F. Wilson, MD continued productivity has merited national and international acclaim. He demonstrated that the syndrome of sepsis is associated with vasodilation rather than vasoconstriction. These initial observations, made early during his academic years while working with Dr. Alan Thal, the WSU Chairman of Surgery, matured and are now accepted universally. Dr. Wilson has authored over 250 peer review publications, which deal primarily with surgical physiology and has edited 10 textbooks dealing with trauma and critical care. He was recognized nationally by being elected President of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. More recently, in 2013, Dr. Wilson was honored as “Master of Critical Care Medicine,” which is the highest accolade provided by the Society of Critical Care Medicine. Throughout his career, he has continued to be productive and authored publications dealing with frontline concepts in critical care surgery. Fortunately, Dr. Wilson’s contributions to the students and residents will not cease following his formal retirement since Dr. Donald Weaver (WSUGS 1979), our current chairman, has convinced him to share his extensive knowledge with our residents, students, and faculty at the weekly Morbidity and Mortality Conference. He still has a greater breadth of knowledge or surgical physiology than any of his faculty colleagues. The Mike and Marion Ilitch Department of Surgery provided a retirement reception and dinner for Dr. Wilson at the GEM Theater on August 11, 2015. Many of the faculty, present and past, joined in celebrating his long and productive career. All had humorous remembrances of their very positive association with Dr. Wilson. Dr. Wilson can be congratulated at rwilson2@dmc.org. Monday, September 7 Dr. Robert Wilson throughout the years Continued Page 2 SEPTEMBER 2015 Dr. Wilson Decides to Smell the Roses, cont.. They were childhood sweethearts and, following their wedding, they moved to England where he completed his internship and then moved later to Rochester, Minnesota, where he did his surgical training at the Mayo Clinic. Following the completion of his surgical training, they moved back to Cape Town, South Africa, where it became apparent to both of them that “Apartheid” was certainly separate but not equal. Not wanting to have their children Dr. Irene Walt 1924-2015 grow up in this segregated society, they moved to Southeast Michigan, where Dr. Walt worked at the Allen Park Veterans Administration Hospital and the old Detroit Receiving Hospital. He became our chairman in 1965. Following the 1967 Detroit race riot, Dr. Walt convinced Irene to become involved in the beautification of the Detroit Receiving Hospital, which, at the time, was a typical inner city public hospital with many 13-bed wards having only a curtain separating patients that were three feet apart. Dr. Irene Walt accepted this challenge with great energy and, thus, began her new career as an advocate for placing artwork in public places for the common people to behold. While Dr. Alec Walt travelled to many faraway places to give lectures, Dr. Irene Walt would accompany him and identify works of art that needed to be brought back to the Receiving Hospital. She was very cultured and very polite but when she identified an artwork that “needed” to be donated to the Detroit Receiving Hospital, she was like a bulldog, finally convincing the owner of the artwork to donate the work to the hospital and get a tax credit rather than selling it on the open market. She was extraordinarily efficient in this endeavor, so that the Detroit Receiving Hospital stands second to none with the extent and quality of art that is readily viewed by the citizens of Detroit. This work extended throughout the Detroit Medical Center, the Henry Ford Hospital, the People Mover Stations in Downtown Detroit, the Alexander J. Walt Breast Cancer Center, and the G.S.A. commissioned John Chamberlain sculpture. She was honored by receiving an honorary doctorate degree by Wayne State University for her contributions to art in Southeast Michigan. Dr. Irene Walt was also a passionate supporter of Pewabic Pottery, which began and still thrives in Detroit, the Greening of Detroit, and the Detroit Institute of Arts. Dr. Walt authored a beautiful book dealing with the art of healing and co-authored a book on the People Mover Stations. She also authored a beautiful art filled book dedicated to the fine art that enhances the hallways at the Detroit Receiving Hospital. She received many awards including the Heart of Gold Award for community development in 1973, the Michiganian of the Year in 1982, and, of course, her honorary doctorate Mrs. Walt enjoyed showing off the artwork that adorned the walls of Detroit Receiving Hospital Page 3 Continued page 4 SEPTEMBER 2015 Dr. Irene Walt Goes to Her Final Reward, cont. The Walt Clan (left to right): the late Dr. Alexander J. Walt, son John, Dr. Irene Walt, daughter Lindsay with her husband, Colin Thomson, and son Steve celebrating Lindsay and Colin’s wedding day degree from WSU in 1988. Earlier this century, she was honored at the 18th Annual Art Serve Governor’s Award for Arts and Culture. Dr. Irene Walt continued to make contributions to artwork in Southeast Michigan for many years after her so-called “retirement.” She was also an expert at all sorts of cuisines and taught many interested individuals in Southeast Michigan how to prepare different cuisines from many diverse cultures. Alec and Irene’s three children have each been very successful in their own areas of interest. Their eldest son, John, is a very busy lawyer practicing in Southeast Michigan. Their son Steve, is a professor of law at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Their youngest, Lindsay, is a professional artist and maintains a studio in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in Brooklyn, New York. Lindsay’s work is exhibited both nationally and internationally. John has two sons. Aaron, his eldest, is in undergraduate school at the University of Michigan and plans to go to medical school. His youngest son, Jack, is beginning ninth grade at Groves High School in Birmingham. John Dr. Irene Walt with her daughter, Lindis proud to point out that Jack shoots 80 on the golf say, and granddaughter, Eve course, which is much better than either his father or grandfather were ever able to accomplish. Lindsay’s daughter, Eve, is a senior John Walt with his sons, Jack and Aaron at the State University of New York Geneseo. She is majoring in international relations with a minor in Spanish and Sociology. She spent her junior year abroad studying at the University of Barcelona in Spain. Dr. Irene Walt left us on August 3, 2015, in order to become a permanent member of The Great Art Museum in the Sky. Dr. Irene Walt with Mr. Glen Michaels at the unveiling of her portrait Page 4 SEPTEMBER 2015 Dr. Irene Walt Goes to Her Final Reward, cont. Dr. Larry Diebel (WSU/GS 1980/86) has always been a tremendous supporter of having Dr. Irene Walt participate in the annual Trauma Symposium, which, as everyone knows, is the oldest trauma symposium in America. During these sessions, Dr. Irene Walt would participate in a reception for the visiting speakers followed by an art tour and a dinner at Giovanni’s Ristorantè in Southeast Detroit. All of the people who have participated as visiting speakers at this trauma symposium would thank Dr. Diebel for the opportunity of seeing Dr. Irene Walt, who was well known to them because of their friendship with Dr. Alec Walt. In remembrance of all of these beautiful events, Dr. Diebel arranged for there to be a flower exhibit in the lobby of the Detroit Receiving Hospital immediately below the portrait of Dr. Irene Walt. This exhibit includes three flower collections in recognition of Drs. Alec and Irene Walt’s three children, namely, John, Steve, and Lindsay. Page 5 SEPTEMBER 2015 The Midwest Surgical Association (MSA) held its 58th annual meeting at the Grand Geneva Hotel in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, on July 26-29, 2015. Recently, Jan and Doug have had to deal with the issues that may occur when a loved one develops cancer. They have nothing but praise for the treatment that was received in the Detroit Medical Center. Jan’s letter follows: Dear Charlie, Doug and Janice Clink I promised you several years ago I would summarize my dad’s experience at Karmanos. To refresh your memory, in 2008 my dad was diagnosed with bladder cancer. He was not a smoker and in quite good health for an 86 year old living in his own home. I had been his legal medical advocate on paper for the past 15 years. Until then, I had no need to interfere with his health care. He kept track of his own meds and appointments. Now, however, I felt the need to accompany him to the oncologist he was referred to by his family doctor and I listened to his medical plan of treatment. After conferring with my husband, Douglas, we immediately knew he needed to get to Karmanos for more current, up-to-date treatment! Dr. Joel Steinberg assisted with connecting us with Dr. Elizabeth Heath and Dr. Jordan Mayer for consultation regarding course of treatment. I must preface by saying my dad was “of the greatest generation.” He was very meticulous and detail oriented. I had suggested going for a true cure and have a cystectomy but he adamantly declined that option. (He didn’t want an ostomy bag.) At his age, chemo and radiation was the treatment plan. He followed every instruction without missing an appointment or pill and drank his Ensure. Two years later, he was cancer free but dealt with radiation cystitis. He did hyperbaric treatment but it just couldn’t stop the slow bleeding. We realized this was a possible complication. However, he received seven additional years of quality life. He even had the occasional martini now and then. He always believed, “everything in moderation.” In December 2014, we finally agreed it was time for hospice and he died on March 4, 2015 at 93 year old. He was the longest surviving sibling of his family. I believe his outcome would have been painfully different had he not gone to Karmanos. Unfortunately, medical treatment is not consistent throughout the U.S. We are fortunate and blessed to have the Wayne State medical Center, it’s doctors, medical school, and residency programs. Ledgerwood (WSUGS 1972) served as president for the world’s most important surgical association, the American Surgical Association. On the first day of that meeting she delivered her presidential address which deals with a 21 st century view of “so-called” quality. This address was very well received and will be delivered at the Wednesday morning Grand Rounds on September 23rd at 8 a.m. following the Morbidity and Mortality Conference. The editor recommends that all of the surgeons practicing in the tri-county area put this on your calendar so that you can hear, first hand, this outstanding lecture. (See Dr. Michael White’s letter. WSSS was designed to create closer contact between the current faculty and residents with the former resident members in order to create a living family of all of the WSU Department of Surgery. The WSSS also supports department activities. Charter/Life Membership in the WSSS is attained by a donation of $1,000 per year for ten years or $10,000 prior to ten years. Annual membership is attained by a donation of $200 per year. WSSS supports a visiting lecturer each fall and co-sponsors the annual reception of the department at the annual meeting of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Mark A. Herman (WSU/GS/1994/2001) passed the baton of presidency to Dr. Randall W. Smith (WSU/GS 1981/86) at the WSSS Gathering during the American College of Surgeons meeting in October 2014. Members of the WSSS are listed on the next page. Dr. Smith hopes that all former residents will become lifetime members of the WSSS and participate in the annual sponsored lectureship and the annual reunion at the American College of Surgeons meeting.
