Some Notes from Fr. Dwight’s Desk…….
Welcome to Applefest !!
As I write this, our parish campus is being transformed into a festival atmosphere. Tents are up. Carnival rides are being
assembled. Bushels of apples are being peeled by generous parishioners, young and older. The youth have wrapped hundreds
of Tootsie Rolls for the Apple Tree extravaganza. Fr. Harvey and his crew of helpers have made about 190 gallons of chili
that wait to be consumed. Yes, it’s once again time for Applefest.
On behalf of the people of St. John the Evangelist parish, welcome to our parish and welcome to Fenton! This is my
third Applefest and I’m looking forward to greeting visitors from all over. I hope you find welcome here both within the
festival and as you join us for Mass. If you are not Catholic and would like to learn more about how to become Catholic,
please see me or contact Dan Medich, our adult formation coordinator for more information. Thank you for being here with
us this weekend!
Lastly, my thanks to all who have planned for months, for those who have worked on set-up for days and to all those
who will give so generously of themselves during the days of our 43rd Applefest. May God bless our labors!
No 6:00 PM Mass Sunday, September 20
Don’t forget that there is no 6:00 PM Mass this weekend due to Applefest. The 6:00 PM Mass returns next Sunday,
September 27.
Web-Based Parish Offertory Giving and Fee Payment Now Available
Like so many folks these days, I have made the switch to on-line bill payment for the vast majority of my regular bills. I
have also made the switch to using the web to offer my regular financial support to our parish community. Our web-based
giving option is safe, secure and very easy to use. It is similar to the e-tithing program that has been in place here at St. John,
but has greater flexibility. It also allows offertory giving to be drawn from a checking account or from a credit or debit card.
There are several advantages to the new web-based offertory giving option. First, it is safe and secure. It makes use of the
highest level of encryption. Secondly, it provides an easy way to make regularly-scheduled and one-time gifts to support a
variety of offertory funds, just like those that can be supported using traditional envelopes. Third, it allows givers to see and
monitor their own offertory giving. Finally, it is very easy to use. Creating a user profile and setting up a recurring or onetime gift is very simple. Just go to our parish website (www.stjohnfenton.org) and click on the “E-Tithing” button. Simple
instructions are there to create a user profile. Once your profile has been created, making an offertory gift to any of the funds
listed there is very simple. The funds will change regularly to reflect those that are available for each month.
Recently, we have also added the ability to accept payment for religious formation tuition and fees, registration fees for
adult faith formation, as well as other non-tax-deductible fees like those associated with purchase of graves in our parish
cemetery as well as niches in the columbaria. This makes it easy to make such payments using credit or debit cards.
Some things to keep in mind: it’s probably best to create only one on-line giving profile per household. This simplifies
things for parish accounting. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Danielle Sphar, our parish accountant at
810-629-2251.
Help Spread the Faith the Weekend of September 27
Thank you for making last year’s annual Evangelization Appeal a success. Thank you for answering Christ’s call to
evangelize. The Help Spread the FAITH Appeal makes our own local evangelization efforts, like FAITH Magazine and the
televised Outreach Mass, possible. Bishop Boyea believes that FAITH is an important part of our evangelization plan. As the
Editor of Lansing’s edition of FAITH (one of over 20 we now publish for dioceses across the United States) and Chairman of
FAITH Publishing, this work is near and dear to my heart. FAITH is sent to your home and every Catholic home each month
by our parishes and diocese. Your generous gift to the Evangelization Appeal helps directly offset the cost to our parish
community for providing FAITH to every registered household.
Many of our fellow Catholics have become disconnected from the life of the Church, and Bishop Boyea believes that
FAITH Magazine is a great way to reach out to them. In addition to FAITH, our diocese continues to evangelize with
interactive Web sites, weekly television Masses, the U.S. bishops’ national efforts and local parish initiatives by supporting
the Help Spread the FAITH Appeal, you will help us continue to answer Christ’s call to reach out with the Gospel message.
The Evangelization Appeal will take place the weekend of September 27. Please make use of either the envelope
contained in your envelope booklet or the one included in the letter you received from Bishop Boyea. Thank you for your
generosity!

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
In this week’s Gospel Jesus begins to teach the apostles about His
upcoming Passion – and they don’t get it at all! Jesus tells them that He
will be handed over and killed, but the disciples did not understand. In last
week’s Gospel Jesus teaches the disciples that He will be killed and rise
after three days and Peter takes Jesus aside and rebukes Him. Why did the
disciples not understand that Jesus had to suffer and die? Over and
over again in the Gospels we see Jesus heal and cast out demons and then
command those He has made whole again not to tell anyone. Why
wouldn’t Jesus want these men and women to tell others about these
miracles?
In order to understand why Jesus did this we need to know who the Jews
expected the Messiah to be (this is known as the Messianic Expectation or
the Messianic Secret). The Jews expected the Messiah to be a political
and military leader who would liberate Israel from Roman domination and
usher in a period of peace and prosperity for the Jews. According to this
view Jesus would be a mighty conqueror; but as we hear in today’s Gospel,
“If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of
all” (Mk 9:35). Jesus had come not to conquer through military victory or
by being a political leader; He came to conquer by laying down His life.
Through His sacrifice He was able to bring about a greater victory: freedom
from sin, Satan, and death. Jesus is the Messiah, but He is not the Messiah
in the ways that the Jews expected.
The idea of a Messiah who would suffer and die was completely
incomprehensible for the Jews, and especially for the disciples; they
wanted to win, to rule, to conquer, to be first. How often is the same true in
our lives? How many of us want to be first? I know for myself I’m always
ready to experience God’s power, but am I ready to suffer with Him? Am I
ready to lay down my life? Am I ready to embrace the cross in my life?
Jesus says, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take
up his cross daily and follow me” (Lk 9:23). In our daily living may each
of us have the courage and strength to take up our cross and follow Jesus,
to suffer with Him so that we might also have victory with Him and
through Him.

Wages are Low
Prices are Up . . . . .
As hard as it is to believe, median
wages are barely higher than they
were thirty years ago when stacked
against inflation of everything from
a loaf of bread to a gallon of gas.
The income of a wage earner in his
30’s today is significantly less than
someone performing the same job
three decades ago, yet consumer
prices continue to climb.
Working families with children
must rely on food pantries, the
churches and some agencies for
help. It is more than food, some
cannot pay the rent, the consumers
Energy, water or telephone bills.
Again, I thank all of our friends
and parishioners who help us reach
out to desperate families.
If you would be able to help, please
write your check to St. John
Outreach and your donation will be
acknowledged immediately.
Thank you,
Maureen

Offertory Observation…
Today’s second reading warns that a heart
consumed with avarice and envy leads to
jealousy, strife, conflicts, and disputes. A
giving heart, in contrast, can sing instead with
the psalmist, “Freely will I offer you sacrifice; I
will praise your name, O Lord, for its
goodness.”
Vocation Views…
If we want to be great we must serve others. Are you
willing to serve others? You can make a difference with
your life.
Today, the collection to support the St Vincent de Paul
food pantry will be taken up during all of the Masses.
Next week, the special collection for the
American Evangelization Appeal will be taken
up during all of the Mases.

Dear Parishioners,
BEFRIENDER MINISTRY is a familiar part
of St. John parish. Perhaps you have taken
the BeFriender classes or taken part in this
ministry. Perhaps, you have been visited by
a BeFriender. Those who volunteer in
BeFriender Ministry are dedicated to the homebound,
lonely, grieving, dying, and those who are dealing with a
crisis in their lives. We are a listening ministry and a
prayerful group in the parish.
We have served the parish for almost 24 years and are
now in need of training three new coordinators for this
ministry. This is done by trained personnel from the
National Headquarters in Minnesota. There is a coordinator training in Michigan in September, 2015.
We are turning to dedicated parishioners and businesses
to help sponsor one of the new coordinators. There is a
significant cost for this training. We would appreciate
whatever amount you could contribute at this time. Your
prompt response is appreciated.

2015 TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS REPORT
"This year’s Report places a special emphasis on human
trafficking in the global marketplace. It highlights the
hidden risks that workers may encounter when seeking
employment and the steps that governments and
businesses can take to prevent trafficking, including a
demand for transparency in global supply chains.
"The bottom line is that this is no time for complacency.
Right now, across the globe, victims of human
trafficking are daring to imagine the possibility of
escape, the chance for a life without fear, and the
opportunity to earn a living wage."
–John F. Kerry,
Secretary of State
The Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report is the U.S.
Government’s principal diplomatic tool to engage
foreign governments on human trafficking. It is also the
world’s most comprehensive resource of governmental
anti-human trafficking efforts and reflects the U.S.
Government’s commitment to global leadership on this
key human rights and law enforcement issue. It
represents an updated, global look at the nature and
scope of trafficking in persons and the broad range of
government actions to confront and eliminate it. The
U.S. Government uses the TIP Report to engage foreign
governments in dialogues to advance anti-trafficking
reforms and to combat trafficking and to target resources
on prevention, protection and prosecution programs.
Worldwide, the report is used by international
organizations, foreign governments, and
nongovernmental organizations alike as a tool to
examine where resources are most needed. Freeing
victims, preventing trafficking, and bringing traffickers
to justice are the ultimate goals of the report and of the
U.S Government's anti-human trafficking policy.
Pray to end Human Trafficking!
