Helensburgh Highlights
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
REMEMBRANCE DAY 2013
This year we commemorate ninety five years since the
cessation of hostilities on the western front at the end of
World War 1. Australia has an ongoing commitment to
helping others in trouble, be that war, famine or natural
disaster. Each year the Helensburgh community gathers to
remember those who paid the ultimate price in service to
their nation.
This year apart from our Captains, Slade and Zoe, laying a
wreath a group of Year 6 singers performed a beautiful and
moving song “Always Remember” by Ian Jefferson. It was an outstanding tribute to those who have served and
touched the hearts of those gathered on this important
occasion.
CPR AND SAFETY AWARENESS PROGRAM
This week students will be given a basic course in CPR and
emergency response. This special course was organised on
the recommendation of our P&C who felt every child should
have some skill in assisting others or getting assistance for
those who require emergency help.
LEGO ROBOTICS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
This Monday 11 November our school Lego Robotics team
are competing in the NSW State Championship at
Narrabeen. We wish them well and know that they have had
great preparation before the event. I look forward to hearing
about their achievements on their return.

SCHOOL AUDIT
This Thursday 14 November and Friday 15 November our
school will have a visit from the NSWDEC auditors. Our
school will be audited across the full range of financials and
through all aspects of Work Health and Safety. I would ask
all parents to be mindful of this demand on our office and
administrative staff when they are making enquiries on
these days.

Seacliff COS Kidslit Quiz
On Thursday 21st of November The Seacliff Community of
Schools is holding a Kids Literature quiz via our connected
classrooms. We will hook up with other schools in the area
for a series of questions on topics such as Animals in
Literature, Harry Potter, Nursery rhymes, Dogs and others.
We will be fielding one or two teams of four. If you would
like to take part please see Mr McQueen in the library for
more details.
Borrowing
In order to prepare for stocktake this week will be the last
week for borrowing books from the library. The library will
still have classes as usual and will still be open at
lunchtimes but there will be no more borrowing after this
week.

Bushfire Appeal by 3/4H
3/4H leaders have taken on the initiative to raise money
for our recent bushfire victims. They organized a class
drawing and colouring in competition with donations
made going directly to the families suffering from this
devastation. We would like to acknowledge this
wonderful leadership and support from all students
involved! A great achievement!

Environmental News
Remember there are recycling stations at the office
including mobile phones, plastic lids, ink cartridges,
stamps, rubber bands, and don't forget 6C's recycling
of coffee pods. Instead of binning these items, send
drop them at the office and help to recycle and
reuse.
Our tireless group of volunteer leaders... this week
Mrs Hanley, Mr Lynch, Mr La Flamme, and Mr Hendry
moved and installed a second water tank, and solar
pump, by the vegie gardens -just in time for this
lovely rain. Fresh organic vegies are harvested by the
lovely canteen ladies. Classes interact with the
garden in many and varied ways; sorting food scraps
into the worm farm, and compost bins, collecting
seeds, growing seedlings, planting, weeding and
watering and of course using all senses to enjoy the
food produced.

Issue 36 Monday 11th November 2013 Week 6 Term 4
School Swimming Scheme
The School Swimming Scheme will take place at
Helensburgh Swimming Pool from Monday 25th November
to Friday 6th December 2013.
Students in Years 2-6 who have not reached a
satisfactory standard of water safety and survival
skills, and are unable to swim 25m confidently
unaided in deep water, are eligible to participate in
the School Swimming Scheme.
It is an intensive learn to swim program, which develops
water confidence and provides students with basic skills in
water safety and survival. Students receive ten daily
lessons of 45 minutes duration. The total cost of the
scheme for students will be $55. This includes transport by
seat-belted bus to and from the pool. This is excellent value
for 10 consecutive lessons of 45 minutes duration.
Please mark these dates in your diary. There are limited
places available and it will be first in with the money and
permission note who will receive a place in the swimming
scheme. Permission notes were sent home on Tuesday 17 th
September.
CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE
We are asking our families of Helensburgh to be
generous again this Christmas.
We will be
holding our Christmas Giving Tree on Friday 6th
December. The whole school will celebrate by
singing Christmas carols and songs. We will
have a Christmas tree and we hope many
children will be able to donate a toy or some
food to a less fortunate and needy family.
The donation of non-perishable foods, such as
tins, UHT custards and cream, tinned puddings,
hams or festive foods that will transport easily
will be most appreciated. New toys of any
description will be so welcome in our collection.
You may also choose to donate cash, special
envelopes will be available from the school
office.
We will be collecting all donations on behalf of
the Anglicare “Toys ‘N Tucker” Appeal. Donations will be sent to families who are less
fortunate and perhaps won’t be able to celebrate Christmas this year. Angiicare has requested
that we do not wrap the toys or presents
donated to the appeal.
Please see Mrs Murray if you have any queries.
Thank you in anticipation of all our wonderful
donations again, this year.
Selective High School Placement 2015
Applications for students seeking selective high school
placement in Year 7 in 2015 will be available from 15

All students seeking placement in a selective high school
will be required to sit the Selective High School
Placement Test on Thursday 13 March 2014. Parents
who wish their child to sit the test will need to apply by
