DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
You Can Do It! (YCDI!) Organisation - As part of our setting goals organisation
it is important to get your child/children to start writing down some lists or
schedules to help with their organisation. As previously mentioned for our
younger children pictures instead of words can be of benefit. Our older students
can start to use a calendar to write on to help when homework or projects are
due. Don’t forget to praise your children when they are being organised.
Walk for Recognition - Last Friday our SRC and Indigenous students (Years
4-6) attended the Walk for Recognition commencing at Faux Park South Tweed
Heads. The group was accompanied by Ms Hawes and myself. The walk was
part of a national initiative to recognise
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in our
constitution to ensure that there is no place
for discrimination. I felt the walk was a very
powerful experience as our students proudly
walked side by side with members of the
community. At the conclusion of the walk we
were addressed by a representative who had
attended all stages of the walk. She gave
our students a brief outline of our constitution and explained what the word
discrimination meant as well as talking about all stages of the walk around our
country. As always the behaviour of our students was exemplary and they were
a delight to take away and represent our school. Congratulations to all students.

STAGE 1 NEWS
Year 1
Easter Hat Parade - Will be held on April 2 at 10.00am in the new COLA.
Students are asked to wear an Easter hat made at home.
Maths - Year 1 are working on place value and using 100s charts and base
10 materials to make large numbers. We have also been looking at numbers
before and after a given number as well as ten more and ten less. We have
been practising counting by tens of the decade and looking for number patterns
on a hundred chart.
Reading - We have been exploring characterisation in literature focused on
Australian animals. We have read Edwina the Emu and Edward the Emu. 1W
and 1S have created some wonderful art of these two characters which is
displayed in the front foyer. Tuesday W of 1S was reading with Mrs Squires and
found this amazing example of personification. “The wind whistled, howled and
roared.” “Mrs Squires that is personification – the wind can’t really whistle, howl
or roar.” Great spotting Tuesday.
Year 1 Art in the hall - 1D have been exploring the art works of Klimt and
have created some beautiful Klimt inspired trees. 1A have created art works
representing Edward the Emu and 1F, 1W and 1S have used line and colour to
replicate the wonderful adventure that Blossom Possum and her friends went
on to see the Prime Minister.
Assembly - will be hosted by 1W and Mr Werner this Friday 13 March at 2.15pm.
Kathy Frost - Assistant Principal
Year 2
Assembly - The next Year 2 assembly will be held on Friday 20 March at
2.15pm. 2A will be hosting the assembly.
Maths - Students will continue on the topic of addition. We will also be
studying doubles and near doubles. Students will be revising friends of 10, and
identifying a number before or after a given two-digit number.
English -Students have been working hard on sentence structure, in particular
the use of compound sentence. We have also been involved in descriptive
writing and writing of poems.
Easter Hat Parade - Our Stage 1 Easter hat parade will be held on the last day
of school this term - Thursday 2 April at 10.00am under the big COLA. We ask
that you begin to plan an interesting hat for the children to wear on this day.
Hats are to be made at home.
Life Education - Life Education lessons for all K-2 classes will take place this
week and next week. Mrs Nicole Ward is the teacher presenting the lessons,
and we welcome her to our school.
Jenny Foster - Deputy Principal
STAGE 2 NEWS
Units of work - All classes in Stage 2 continue to work on the science unit
“Melting Moments”. In this unit of work the students are investigating the effect
of heat on materials and the change in state of the materials from liquid to solid.
In mathematics Year 4 are beginning the topic of subtraction while Year 3
continue to work on addition.
Assembly - Stage 2 assemblies started last week. The next assembly
will be held on Wednesday 18 March and will be run by the Year 3 SRC
representatives.
Parent teacher interviews - Parent teacher interviews for most Stage 2 students
will be held between Monday 16 March and Friday 27 March. This is a very
important time for teachers, parents and students so please book in for your
interview.
Ann Swanton - Assistant Principal
WELCOME MR KANE JARDINE
Hello I’m Kane Jardine and I am very excited
to be teaching 4J in 2015. I am very much
looking forward to the journey that lies ahead
for all of us. I know how lucky I am to be
offered this amazing opportunity to work with
such inspirational and supportive colleagues,
and also to work with the incredible students
that call Pottsville Beach Public School
home. A little bit about me…on the weekends I play Rugby Union, and have
been doing so for about 10 years. Beyond Rugby, I have a keen interest in
all things sport (Jack of all trades, master of none). I have previously lived
in London for two years on a working holiday and shared some amazing
experiences with new and old friends. So if you see me floating around looking
lost, please come and say “G’day” and help me to find my way.
Kane Jardine - 4J Teacher
STAGE 3 NEWS

Year 7 in a NSW government school in 2016. This booklet provides information
about government secondary schools and includes an Expression of Interest
(EOI) form for placement in Year 7. All students MUST complete and return this
form whether they intend to enrol at a government, or non-government school.
EOIs must be returned to school no later than Friday 20 March. Thank you in
advance for your cooperation.

SPORT NEWS
Surf News - For the past three weeks, 28 Stage 3 students have been
participating in the Learn to Surf program at
Hastings Point as part of the school’s sports
program. They are learning a combination
of surf skills and safety as well as surf
awareness. It caters for all skill levels from
beginner to advanced. The well structured
program has already seen all students
successfully standing up on their boards and
catching some great waves. I would like to
thank the students for their outstanding behaviour and to Sasha Stocker and his
team for creating a fun learning environment for all. Hang Ten.
Karen Smith - Coordinator
Rugby Union News - Last Thursday the senior and junior Rugby union teams
took part in the annual Casuarina Cup. All
the boys enjoyed the day, despite the very
hot conditions. The senior team played three
games with one draw and two losses with
Mathew B, Ryder J and Oliver B playing well
in all games. The juniors started the day
with a skills camp which they enjoyed. They
drew their first game against Kingscliff, then
went on to post convincing wins against St
Anthony’s and Lindisfarne meaning they were able to share the trophy at the
end. It was very impressive considering that many of them had never played
before. Our ‘secret weapon’ Dylan B, Fergus G and Saige S were among the
stand-outs.
Paul Kahl and Kane Jardine - Coordinators
Basketball - Kai D and Charlotte S recently took part in the FNC trials for
basketball in Byron Bay. Congratulations to Charlotte S who was selected in the
FNC team to take part in the North Coast basketball trials in Grafton later this
month. Well done to both students.
Paul Kahl - Sport Coordinator
BAND NEWS
What an exciting week we have had! The Potty Pipers started their band
practice on Monday. It is quite busy at times having so many beginner students
in one room, but we managed to get everyone playing page four of the Standard
of Excellence. Don’t forget to continually encourage your child to practice. The
senior band performance scheduled for Week 8 has been postponed to a later
date as the new song is proving more difficult than first expected. In order to
perform this piece, all students need to be practising at least three times a
week.
Jake Bryant - Music Teacher
OFFICE NEWS
Invoices - Invoices for the music program, Year 6 camp and donation to KH,
showing outstanding balances have been sent home with students today.
Sue Matheson - School Administrative Manager
LIBRARY NEWS
Library Volunteers Wanted - Library Makeover - On Friday 20 March the library
will close for the day so that we can install some new shelves and book boxes.
Can you help? Just turn up on the day. Your help will be appreciated no matter
how brief. Are you interested in covering some of our new books? Please send
in a note with your child or call in to the library. Many of our senior students are
very keen to volunteer in the library to help shelve the books and set up the
tablets etc. In order for the many volunteers to try different tasks each senior
class will be given one week in which to manage the library jobs. This week 6B
is on duty. Please note that students do not need change their travel plans to or
from school and attendance is voluntary.
