EDITOR’S NOTES
Malcolm Baster
A decision was made to hold the January meeting in the
form of a “Town Hall” discussion. However, in order to
obtain suggestions as to topics of discussion that would
be of interest, it was decided to carry out a member survey containing certain questions, the answers to which
would give your board a good indication as to future policy. The survey was emailed to all members resulting in a
27% response, which we consider a fair sample. Please
refer to the detailed results included elsewhere in this
edition of the Growler, which I am sure you will find
most interesting.
Really enjoyed the Catalina Prowl. Lucille and I spent our
careers in aviation, so trips to the airport are always a
treat.
Transport category aircraft now are very different from
those of our day. Glass cockpits, computer systems, flyby-wire controls all make things much safer and easier.
Until something goes wrong. A contributing factor in some
recent major crashes has been a lack of “stick and rudder” skills among flight crew members, and now training in
basic aviation techniques is returning.
I remember talking to the crew of a major Canadian airline. The airline had recently acquired the computercontrolled Airbus A320, and the company would pull the
cockpit voice recorder tapes periodically to see what
crews were saying. Most often heard were:
“What’s it doing now?”
And
“Why’s it doing that?”
But I am sure they have it figured out by now!
Gregory Andrachuk graciously agreed to monitor the
lively discussions that took place at the town hall meeting. Doubtless the responses and comments received
from those attending were most informative and will be
most helpful in formulating future club policy. For those
members who participated, thank you.

JETSTREAM Custom Auto of Sidney, one of our
staunch supporters and advertisers, has agreed to host
a Saturday morning demonstration featuring the refurbishing of the interior/exterior of a 1971 Jaguar XJ6 Series 1. Jason and his crew at JETSTREAM will be available to demonstrate their skills and technique used in the
restoration of classic automobiles. In addition, I have
convinced Gregory to once again apply his magic to the
restoration of the leather seats of the elderly XJ6.
(Perhaps we should seriously consider entering into negotiation with Tim Horton’s for a suitable supply of coffee
and donuts.) More detail regarding this potentially exciting event will be made available as arrangements are
finalized.

January’s Rolex 24 hours of Daytona opened the 2015
Tudor United Sports Car Championship season. This
year’s race was won by the Chip Ganassi Racing Riley
Mk XXVI, powered by a 3.5 litre Ford EcoBoost Turbo V6.
Jaguars have won this race, most recently in 1990 when
two XJR -12D’s finished first and second.

JCCV Sunday Prowl, February 8, 2015

About a dozen Jaguars gathered at Tillicum Mall parking
lot. Most were elegant XJ saloons and couple of XJSs.
The E-types and Mk IIs were still in hibernation, and some
non-feline machines came along. The rain stayed away
for the day, and we convoyed up the Peninsula on the old
roads away from the Highway (passing some members’
homes on the route.)
We are impressed that a historical Canadian built warplane is being preserved here in our community. The
Catalina Preservation Society is a non-profit group and
well worth our support and encouragement. Membership
is $25 a year and is tax deductible.
We gathered at Victoria Air Maintenance’s hangar and
were welcomed by Pat Phillips, the PR contact for the
Catalina Preservation Society. He introduced us to Robert
Dyck who owns the aircraft. Robert is a very experienced
flying boat and water bomber pilot. He flew the Martin
Mars of Cowichan Lake. We walked to the aircraft inside
the secure area and Pat gave us a lively history of the
design and service of the PBY or Catalina.

We reconvened across the road at Mary’s Restaurant
where we were (almost) all seated together, despite 30
plus showing up for a 20 seat reservation. The lone server
and two-person kitchen also managed to serve our various orders together. The restaurant was established during World War II and is decorated with aircraft pictures
and models. On a wall hangs a radial aircraft engine.
We were told the design dates from 1933, and this aircraft
was built in Quebec in 1943 and stationed at Pat Bay.
Later it had a life as a water bomber and ended up at the
TV-famous Buffalo Airways. Pat thinks it is unique for a
warbird to be preserved at the base where it was in service.

We were allowed to enter the flying boat and sit at the
controls. The plane is in flying condition with current airframe certificate. The engines have been rebuilt, and will

J
aguar has announced a major partnership with the
British World Land Speed Record Team. The Team’s
Bloodhound SSC car is planned to make an attempt on
the World Land Speed Record this year, and reach
1,000 MPH in 2016.
A 550 HP supercharged Jaguar V8 engine is to be fitted
to the Bloodhound SSC. The Jaguar engine is not actually quite up to pushing a car along at 1,000 MPH, so an
EJ2000 turbofan of the type normally found in the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, along with a Nammo hybrid
rocket engine, will provide the propulsive force. The
Rolls Royce-built EJ2000 engine generates over 20,000
lbs of thrust, and the rocket another 27,500 lbs, for a
total of 47,700 lbs. There is no relationship between
thrust and horsepower, but this seems to equate to
around 135,000 HP.

And the Jaguar engine? Its purpose is to drive the rocket oxidiser pump, which will deliver 9 gallons of High
Test Peroxide (HTP) per second for 20 seconds to the
rocket motor.
Jaguar has also supplied vehicles for the project, and
has taken part in high-speed communications system
tests on the Hakskeen Pan desert in South Africa. In
these, a Jaguar F-Type R is driven flat out towards a
Czech-built L39 Albatros jet going in the opposite direction 50 feet up, while they communicate with each other.
The tests apparently went well.
The current World Land Speed Record holder is the
Thrust SSC, powered by two Rolls Royce Spey turbofans generating 50,000 lbs of thrust. Driven by Andy
Green, it set a record of 763 MPH on October 15, 1997
at Black Rock Desert in Nevada. Andy Green is slated to
drive the Bloodhound SSC.

Coffee Klatch at the
Oak Bay Beach Hotel
J
aguar made what may be a very important announcement at the recent Detroit Auto Show. The company
said that production of a new “crossover” will commence,
with sales beginning in 2016. The new model will position
Jaguar in a very lucrative and very competitive market
segment. Its main competitors will be the Audi Q5, the
BMW X3, Mercedes GLC and the new Porsche Macan.

JANUARY COFFEE KLATCH (and a 5 month old’s birthday)
It had been a dark and stormy night – literally. With the
rainstorm having subsided it was a great opportunity to
head to the Oak Bay Beach Hotel to the Conservatory
room for morning coffee, lattes, hot chocolate and
tea...and toast and cinnamon buns. By 10:00 AM there
were lots of tables and chairs being shuffled and more
Jaguar Club members strolling in. Lots of Jaguar discussion ensued including how to use ColorPlus Surflex leather colourant to bring back newness to Jaguar interiors. A
couple of memberships were renewed, paid by cash and
cheque. Then more tales of cars being sold and bought
in December and January! After all we do not really have
a winter in Victoria, do we?
The new Jaguar will be called the F-Pace, and will be the
production version of the C-X17 concept, which was
shown last year.
The success of the F-Pace is very important to Jaguar as
the company badly needs to increase its US sales, which
slipped 7% last year.
A couple of quotes:
Ian Callum, director of design for Jaguar, said in a statement that the “overwhelmingly positive response to the CX17 concept” prompted the company to approve production: “The Jaguar F-Pace, inspired by the F-Type, represents a perfectly judged balance of style, performance
and practicality.”
Today was a bit special. It was the 5 months birthday of
little Georgia Taverner, daughter of Janine and Bob Taverner. After a look around the tables it was noted that today we had in attendance the youngest and (could be)
the oldest member of the Jaguar Car Club of Victoria. The
hands down winner of the “youngest” category was little
Georgia. The most senior member – well, you will have to
look at the photo and decide.
Andy Goss, Jaguar Land Rover Global Sales Director:
“In 2015 we will celebrate Jaguar’s 80th year. We have
started it by announcing our first performance crossover
which we consider to be the ultimate practical sports car
– a car that builds on the marque’s founding ideals of
Grace, Pace and Space to become one of the most innovative Jaguars we’ve ever developed. The F-PACE has
now begun its engineering and development testing programme ahead of the new model going on sale in 2016.”

Some more Jaguar news.
Jaguar has announced that there will soon be a fourwheel drive version of the F-Type. The drive will be biased towards the rear wheels, with some power going to
the front wheels when launching off the line from a standstill or when slip is detected while cornering. It is thought
that the four-wheel drive system will facilitate the development of a more powerful F-Type by Jaguar’s Special Vehicle Operations.
The Jaguar C-X17 concept, upon which the new F-Pace
will be based.
Interestingly, the Cayenne SUV is by far Porsche’s best
selling model, and the new Macan crossover is selling
like the clichéd hotcakes, with supply unable to keep up
with demand. And I am sure that the F-Pace, despite its
goofy name, will be a much nicer vehicle than a Macan!

Pity poor Algebra. It’s always asking us to try to find its X.
When will it realize she’s never coming back?
It is reported in Forbes magazine that in response to upcoming fuel economy legislation, Jaguar Land Rover will
very shortly introduce diesel alternatives for most of their
respective models for the North American market. First
up will be the 2016 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.
The engines will be highly fuel efficient clean-diesel units.
The evening news: “Good evening.” says the newscaster.
Then she proceeds to tell us why it isn’t.

The Growler
There is the Island Growler, and there is the Growler!
“What’s this?” you say. “Is Jaguar getting into the plane
making business?”
Well, no. Some years ago Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair
operated a “logo” series of aircraft. In addition to Jaguar,
the Hertz Rent-a-Car, Vodafone and Irish brewery Kilkenny paint schemes appeared on Ryanair planes.
The aircraft pictured above, registered EI-CJE is a Boeing
737-204 built in 1982. It was originally operated by Britannia Airways, leased for a time by Spanish carrier Spantax,
returned to Britannia Airways, and acquired by Ryanair in
1994. It has now “timed-out” and has been scrapped.

The Growler E2011
To mark the 2011 50th anniversary of the E-Type, a Swiss
businessman commissioned designers Bo Zolland of
Swiss firm Vizualtech and Robert Palm, an independent
designer, to create a sports car to honour the legend.
The Growler E2011 is the result. The car is based on the
Jaguar XKR, its supercharged five litre V8 remapped to
produce 600 HP. The body is made of composite materials, and is glued onto a chassis consisting of a central
carbon fibre core. Tubular frames are bolted on front and
rear to hold the engine, transmission and steering and
suspension components. The Growler weighs about 200
Kg less than the XKR.

``Rally 4 Memories``
Rally 4 Memories, the drive for dementia, is a poker run
car rally from Victoria to Campbell River to raise funds in
support of the We Rage We Weep Alzheimer Foundation.
To quote the designers: “Everyone doesn’t like the direction taken lately by Jaguar design, initiated by the Jaguar
XF and confirmed by the new XJ.
Rally day you will enjoy the scenic drive up Island with
a tasty lunch hosted by Pacific Prime Steak & Chop at the
Beach Club in Parksville. The adventure continues after
lunch as you head up the island to Campbell River and
your final destination, Painter's Lodge for two nights of
leisure.
The Drivers’ Meeting (providing instructions for the
day) hosted by Vancouver Island Brewery as well as various stops including 40 Knots Vineyard & Estate Winery
along the way will allow you to connect with fellow car
enthusiasts and collect your winning poker cards.
There are still many friends of the noble English brand
who are nostalgic of the sensual shapes of the XK 120,
Mark II, XJ6 and, last but not least, the fantastic Jaguar
E-Type.
This project was born in the mind of one of these nostalgic fans, who wanted to see the original style again, but
up to date and with the latest technology”
It was later announced that a limited production run of
Growlers would commence. No prices were announced,
but as each car would be hand-built and take six months
to complete, the price would probably be about the same
as that of a space shuttle.

In last month’s Island Growler we made mention of the
Jaguar XK 100, intended to be a lower cost version of the
XK 120. It never made it into production.
Subsequently I received an E-mail from club member
Alan Lea, whose father was involved in the project while
he was with Jaguar’s Experimental Department.
Alan writes:
“Very interesting. I can confirm that the engine existed as
I remember seeing it in the experimental shop at the Foleshill Road plant in 1949, I think. My father took me in on
the way to Silverstone, and the 2-litre engine had just
been returned from its only public excursion. Col.
“Goldie” Gardner had “borrowed” it for his MG Streamliner
and broke several 2-litre records using the same
Jabbeke-Ostend highway as Soapy Sutton and my father
had used for the XK120 runs (there were two). Jaguar
produced a sales brochure for the XK120 and the XK100
– I used to have one. Leslie Johnson wanted to use the
engine in his planned Formula 2 car but Mr. Lyons said
‘'show me the car first”; the car eventually went to Bristol.
The story was put out that Lyons thought the engine “too
rough” for road use, but I suspect the overwhelming demand for the 120 took priority, and with the arrival of the
steel body the performance would have suffered too
much.”
There is a report in Jaguar Magazine that 50 of the four
cylinder engines, some complete some not, which were
intended to power the XK100 have been found in
Jaguar’s old Radford engine plant. The engines have
been removed from the plant, but Jaguar has apparently
not yet decided what to do with them.

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF
The birth of sports car racing was spawned from the GIs return from WWII. While in Europe they
were exposed to light weight sporty cars that just didn’t exist in the United States. So when they got home
they started to import them. In just a few years the Sports Car Club of America was formed and racing began.
It would only seem logical that given the population centers of the east coast and west coast that
you would find strong racing interests in those areas. So how did a little village in southeastern Wisconsin
become an international race destination? Elkhart Lake was a tourist destination with many people throughout the Midwest arriving by train. After WWII tourism was down. The Chicago region SCCA was looking for
a place to run a race on public roads. After a lot of searching they thought the area around Elkhart Lake
would work well. Two of those SCCA people were Fred Wacker and Jim Kimberly, high profile businessmen
who knew how to get things done. They went to local business owners in the area and pitched the idea of a
race. Everyone was on board and hoped to revive the tourism industry. The first race was July 23rd 1950.
The first race was very much a Chicago region event. There were five races. The cars were divided into
over and under 1500 cc. There were races for novice and experienced drivers. The event was a success
with over 5,000 spectators.

The race track course
was enlarged to 6.5
miles from the 1950
track which was 3.5
miles long. The event
was now two days long
with a concours, rally
and street dance on
Saturday and races on
Sunday.

rally
started from different
locations throughout the
U.S.
Check points were set
up and more points
were awarded for a
greater distance from
Elkhart Lake. The overall winner was Morgan Sinclaire who drove his Allard from Santa Monica, California, a
total driving distance of 2,241 miles at 41 miles per hour. Second place went to R.H. Riecken who drove his
Ford from Cambridge, Massachusetts. He drove 1,195 miles at 39 mph. The third place went to Paul Dillion
from Babylon, New York. He drove his MG-TD 994 miles at 35 mph. At this time there was not a network of
interstate highways to make life easy. There certainly was not an Allard or MG dealer in every town. It was
quite an adventure. The races brought in 98 entrants for 1951. Like the rally cars, most of the race cars were
driven to Elkhart Lake, raced, and driven home. There were three scheduled races. The first race was for
novices. The race was won by Roger Wing from Bethesda, Maryland driving an XK120 Jaguar. Maybe after
driving that far to get to the event he should not have been considered a novice. Second place went to Frank
Bott driving Dave Garroway’s Jaguar SS-100. The second race was to be a ladies race. Bad weather was
coming in so they cancelled that race to make time for the main feature. The feature race was 30 laps. The
race was won by John Fitch driving a Cunningham. This car was driven from Florida to Elkhart Lake. Michael Graham driving an Allard came in second. The “Silverstone” Jaguars finished third and fourth. These
were actually the factory LTW2 and LTW3. These cars were built in case the C-types were not ready for
LeMans. They actually came in first and second in their class. Phil Hill beat out Jorge Malbrand, from Argentina, for the top Jaguar. The 1951 event brought an estimated 50,000 spectators.

The promoters built
on the success of 1951 to make
the 1952 event even bigger. The
event became three days in
length. It was now called the
Elkhart Lake International Road
Race and Monte Carlo Rally. The
competition of the rally and concours was held on Friday. The
overall winner of the rally was
Dorothy Dickinson driving an MGTC from Long Beach, California.
She truly deserved that win. The
second place award for “Best
Performance by a car under
1500cc’s” went to a team of ladies from Los Angeles, California,
driving an MG-TD.
Saturday was the Sheldon Cup race. This feature race was for cars of 1950 cc to 4000 cc. It was
Phil Hill who drove the Jaguar C-Type to a win. This
would be the C-types first win in North America. Phil
Walter drove a Ferrari to second place. Third place went
to George Weaver driving another C-Type. The Saturday concours saw winners such as a 1909 Hupmobile,
1919 Locomobile and a 1928 Mercedes Benz Phaeton.
Sunday’s first race was the Kimberly Cup.
This was for cars under 1950cc. This race saw over 20
MG’s enter. It was the Osca of Bill Spears that took the
checkered flag. Second and third places were taken by
Porsches. The big race for the day was the Elkhart Lake
Cup. This race was open to all cars no matter the displacement. The race was 201.5 miles in length. Once
again it was John Fitch in a Cunningham that won the
race. This year it was an all Cunningham podium. Outpowered, the two Jaguar C-Types finished fourth and fifth.
The 1952 event was a huge success. The
spectator count was estimated at over 100,000 people. The population of the Village of Elkhart Lake was less
than 1000. For that weekend in September it was the center of the racing world. Due to safety concerns, open
road racing was banned and a new era of racing would begin, but not until 1955.
You may think that you missed
your chance to experience those glory
years. You would be wrong! The 2015
JCNA Challenge Championship will be Held
September 16th – 20th, 2015, in Elkhart
Lake with many activities at the Road America race track. The Vintage Sports Car Drivers Association is welcoming the Challenge
Championship to the 30th Anniversary of the
Elkhart Lake Vintage Festival, a nationally
recognized vintage race festival that brings
in almost 300 race teams.

Test your skills at the slalom on Thursday while racers are honing their own skills on the track.
You will be able to prep your car for the Friday concours and watch the races at the same time. The concours will take place at one of the best viewing spots at the track. The rally will traverse the beautiful rolling
hills of the Kettle Moraine. It will take place on Saturday morning. There has never been a Challenge
Championship like this and there never will be again.
That should be enough to get you planning to attend. This event will offer much more. There
will be lunch time touring on the track both Saturday and Sunday. Do you want a ride in a pace car for one
of the races? How about a ride in a race car? Let us know. The 24th annual Road Course Reenactment
will happen Saturday afternoon. This is a police-escorted drive on the original road course. This is open to
all race cars and street cars. The reenactment will stop on Lake Street in the village. Lake Street was part
of the original road course. The street will be shut down for a car show. As that show ends the Gather on
the Green concours begins on the back lawn of the Osthoff Resort. This is an invitation-only concours and
you’re invited. At the end of the concours is the VSCDA banquet. Sunday will be a full day of racing. The
Jaguar feature race will be right after lunch. Before the main feature, there will be a Jaguar parade lap for
all street cars and also any race cars that are not racing. Two major events, one location, Road America,
Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin!
