jongmense,
waaronder
hoërskoolleerders, het verlede Woensdag
mekaar in Grosvenorstraat met messe
toegetakel.
Twee mense is in die plaaslike hospitaal
opgeneem vir behandeling weens steekwonde.
Jaco Gericke, ‘n lewensondersteuner, was
was.
skorsing verantwoordelik sou wees.
by die aanranding betrokke was nie.

PHALABORWA HERALD Friday October 18, 2013
Students want their
demands acknowledged
Hundreds of students of the Mopani South
East FET College protested last Tuesday,
accusing the management of the college of
not listening to their demands.
The strike broke out after the management
and the Student Representative Council
(SRC) failed to reach an agreement on the
allocation of the National Student Financial
Aid Scheme (NSFAS) loan bursaries.
Students complained of not receiving
transport and accommodation fees.
One of the students, Tsakani Zwane said
the bursary has not paid her fees until now.
‘Some of the students doing nated courses
were forced to drop out because they were
told that the bursary won’t pay for their fees.
We come from poor backgrounds, we really
need this bursary to assist us,’ said Zwane.
Another concerned student Prudence
Ncwane said the bursary has not paid for her
accommodation. ‘We signed bursary forms at
the beginning of the year that we will receive
transport and accommodation fees, but that
is not happening,’ said Ncwane.
During the address of the students, the
campus manager Maria Seegers responded to
the allegations, in order to assist the students
all transport money paid up to date was paid
from College funds.
The first payments of NSFAS were received
on 1 October 2013 for some of the students.
‘We are in the process of consolidating the
money received from NSFAS and money paid
from the College. Should the students be able
to provide proof that they had bought a bus
ticket and attended class for this period it will
be refunded on condition that the student
are legible for a transport allowance,’ said
Seegers.
On issues of accommodation the
management said that on instruction of
the Department of Higher Education and
Training an audit was done to ascertain
that the bursary accommodation is given to
deserving students.
‘The audit firm has been appointed as
such and they are currently auditing bursary
processes and allocations. In the audit process
some discrepancies in accommodation have
been identified which will need appropriate
action.’
‘When the audit is complete a report will
be submitted to DHET for further instruction
and then student accommodation will be
further processed,’ said Seegers.
A member of the SRC, who does not want
to be named for fear of being seen as a traitor,
says the students are not following the correct
procedure and they have misunderstood the
NSFAS allocation.
Crime briefs
Phalaborwa police arrested eight people
over the past week. Sergeant Malesela
Makgopa, spokesperson for Phalaborwa

theft out of a motor vehicle, one for pointing
someone out as a witch and one for possession

oorlede. Hy was 27 jaar lank ‘n lid van SA
Jagters.
Johan Merlati is op Woensdag 9 Oktober
van sy pyn verlos. Merlati was 10 jaar ‘n lid
hom baie belangrik.
‘Hulle plekke is
leeg maar ons sal hul
altyd onthou, hulle
was merkwaardige
manne.
Ons gebede is
met Linda en haar

Tina van Niekerk.

INGE-ENT: Kerry Gerber, Patrick Mthimkulu en
Marie Gouws van die DBV Phalaborwa, by ‘n
hondjie wat verlede week teen hondsdolheid
ingeënt was.
‘n gratis aanvullende inenting ‘booster’
Die diens is beskikbaar by Phalaborwa
Dierekliniek in Tulbachstraat 46.
Daar is die afgelope week besondere
aandag aan hierdie probleem gegee toe
diere beskermings verenigings landwyd
the Herald on
gedurende hierdie tydberk teen hondsdolheid
ge-ent is.
katte gestreriliseer.
Dr Gerrit Scheepers sê dat daar onlangs
vyf positiewe gevalle van hondsdolheid
in Phalaborwa voorgekom het. Hy wil die
belangrikheid van inenting beklemtoon en
het die hoop uitgespreek dat diereliefhebbers
hulle honde en katte vir hierdie opvolg
inenting sal bring.
lyding veroorsaak.

A man from Namakgale was
furious when he found his house
demolished at Namakgale Zone
on Friday afternoon
Rodney Silaole said the stand
belongs to him and he pays the
municipality services such as
water.
‘The total money I spent
in building this house is
approximately R80 000 and it
has been destroyed completely,’
said Silaole.
When Phalaborwa Herald
investigated the matter, it was
found that stand number 77E is a
park according to the Directorate
Economic Development, Human

According to BaPhalaborwa
Municipality
spokesperson,
Jonas Mahesu, on February
28, 2012 legal services received
a written complaint from the
mentioned Directorate that stand
number 77E have been invaded.
The stand is a designated park
and not a residential area.
‘The municipality lodged an
application to stop Silaole from
off loading building material.
Silaole ignored the notice and
continued with his activities,’
said Mahesu.
He further said that the
municipality obtained a court

gave him seven days to remove

ignored it again, and then

The

The BCDF is making a call that Phalaborwa

AVOID THESE
PITFALLS
DURING RETIREMENT
How to stay financially comfortable at
Retirement
Many articles have been written about being
financially prepared for retirement but very
few articles talk about what you need to do to
stay financially comfortable.
It is more difficult to deal with financial
challenges when you are retired than when
you are young. So take these steps now to
stay financially secure and look out for the
following risks:
Wilfred Moyo, Investment & Economic
Strategist at Metropolitan
Inflation risk is a reality and happens when
your pension doesn’t keep up with inflation,
e.g. in 2005 R20 could buy you three bags of
rice, but now it’ll only buy you one bag.
This leads us to the longevity risk – living long and possibly running out of income.
The savings we have when we retire may not be enough to support us in our golden
years, especially with medical technology that lets us live longer.
Another risk that gets overlooked is consumption risk – consuming more than what
your financial plan can support. Schedule an annual review of your investments and
stay in touch with your financial affairs.
Then there’s investment risk – the risk of making the wrong investment decisions.
There isn’t much time to fix any wrong investment choices after you’ve retired so
get a qualified financial adviser to help you.
Your financial partner before and at retirement
We can help with one of the biggest financial decisions that will impact the rest of
your life. Contact the Tzaneen branch on (087) 742 3141 or visit us at 24 Danie Joubert
Street, Tzaneen. You can also contact the Makhado branch on (087) 742 3143.

Inwoners
gedoen asook medisyne waar nodig, uitgedeel.
Tjokkers geniet piekniek
Die Groenskool het op 10
Oktober ‘n baie geslaagde
speletjiesdag gehou.
Die tema was, Hawaiise strand
piekniek,.
Orals het kleurvolle sambrele
gepryk en baie opgewonde Graad
R’e en RR’e het in gepaste klere
die geleentheid bygewoon om
aan die speletjies deel te neem.
Hamburgers,
koeldranke
stokworsies en ander verversings
is verskaf.
Potgieter is as hekwagte verkies by die
Groenskool.
kliniek.

DRESSED UP: Learners at Namakgale Primary School dressed up in their favourite future career during the Career Dress Up Day on Friday.
Dress up encourages career awareness
The Grade 7 learners from Namakgale
Primary School dressed up as their future
career options in celebration of the national
Career Dress Up Day on Friday.
Most learners came dressed as police
officers, medical practitioners, lawyers,
engineers and entertainers.
Life Orientation teacher, Evodia Mabifi
Mokgawa said Career Dress Up Day is a fun
event designed to encourage career awareness
amongst Grade 7 learners as part of the Life
Orientation curriculum.
‘It’s celebrated every second week of
October and the aim is for learners to know
and focus on their future career at a young
age,’ said Mokgawa.
Kgomotso Malebana motivated the
learners to stay away from drugs and teenage
pregnancy and focus on their studies.
‘Life is about the choices you make, if
you want good things, follow the right
path. Remember the human mind attracts
everything, it’s up to you on what you want it
to attract,’ said Malebana.
One of the learners, Machidi Monyela said
she wanted to be a gynecologist when she
grows up.
‘I chose this career because I’m concerned
about the death rate of women during
birth and I’m also interested in a woman’s
reproduction system,’ said Monyela. Another
learner Ntsako Mazide said he wanted to be a
Motor Engineer. ‘I have passion for cars and
I started drawing cars when I was in grade 3,’
said Mazide.
Speakers during the event included, Sipho
Chauke from Phalaborwa Community Radio
Station who explained to the learners about a
career in Journalism. ‘To be a good journalist
means you must love meeting new people,
reading and listening to news, be dedicated
and be a good pretender if you are working
for radio,’ said Chauke.
Manto Mamaregane also added few tips of
being a good journalist. ‘You must have good
writing skills, research ability, be curious,
be assertive, be persuasive and be a good
listener,’ said Mamaregane.
Themba Mnisi spoke about a career in
engineering, where he explained all the
engineering courses.
Meanwhile Winnie Marishane from
Mopani South East FET College explained
to the learners about different programmes
and courses offered at the college. She
also explained the subjects needed and the
registration process.
All the speakers motivated the learners to
study hard and chose a career that will best
suit their mental ability and personality.

Learners celebrate culture
Schietocht Primary School celebrated their
cultural diversity on Friday.
The event had many cultures represented,
including the Xitsonga, Venda, Zulu, Sepedi,
Portuguese, Kangela and Kwenyama.
The school principal Jabu Sambo said this
was a way to communicate cultural learning
and learn more about their own and other
cultures.
‘We celebrate and share our diversity on
a daily basis both inside and outside the
classroom in order to enrich the learning
experience for our learners and the whole
school community, we recognize that each of
us is a cultural being,’ said Sambo.
He also said that they understand that
cultural identity comes from traits and
values learned through membership in
micro-cultures based on ethnic origin,
religion, gender, age, class, native language,
geographical region, and other factors.
‘For us, culture is much more than a study
of food, fashion, folklore, festivals and fame,’
said Sambo.
The learners were taught to be open
minded, reflective and to be caring about all
cultures.
Different activities representing different
cultures took place through out the day and
parents cooked their different cultural food at
the school.
