get many chances to be all together that much. We
find that some of the “bonding” of friendships and
shared ideals happens best when we simply spend
time with each other, sharing stories and smiles.
So we’re all heading for a hotel in the New Orleans
area, where we can stop being workaholics for a
little while and hopefully lower our collective blood
-pressure by a significant amount!
Dear Parishioners and Friends,
Last weekend was a full
one, but a fun one! Our RCIA
“home-coming” Mass and reception on Saturday was most
enjoyable. It was great to see so
many familiar faces from years
past again. In particular I think
everyone loved the visit with Sr. Carla Candella
and Sr. Fides Bourgeois, who worked so loyally
and so long in that ministry. The First Holy
Communion celebration on Sunday was also a
special one, as seven young people of our Parish
received Jesus for the first time in the Sacrament
of the Most Holy Eucharist!
So, please pray that God richly bless our
gathering. I hope we’ll come back not just with
more knowledge, but also with more deep-seated
happiness in our vocations of service to God and to
you, God’s holy people. By the time you pick up
this Bulletin in church, we’ll both know if that’s
happened!

The Knights of Columbus had the most fun
of all, cooking around 200 chickens in the big pit.
The BBQ chicken dinners were sold as a fundraiser for them, but they were kind and shared all
of that good “barbecue smoke” with us for free!
The inside of the Cathedral building always smells
nice from the incense we use every Sunday, but
this past weekend it actually smelled better outside
all over Cathedral Square!
HELP NEEDED!!!
As I write these words I’m about to leave
town for just about the rest of the week. Each year
Bishop Muench and the priests of our diocese
spend four days in shared study: our “Spring Formation Days” on May 6-9 is a mandatory program
of continuing education for us, fostering
growth in our intellectual and spiritual formation,
as well as personal well-being and fraternity. Just
as lawyers, doctors, educators and virtually all other professional persons are expected to stay up-todate and knowledgeable in their fields of expertise,
so too the priests of the Church gather on occasion
to stay current and connected.
One way in which St. Joseph Cathedral parishioners can volunteer
their services is to be a part of our
“Prayer Line.” These people simply
offer to pray for our parishioners and
friends and their intentions. You may
have noticed the lists of sick and homebound
published in the Bulletin on the last Sunday of
each month.
Can you help us out by praying for those in
need? You’ll get a phone call from the Prayer Line
Coordinator – usually once a week – with a list of
intentions. If you think can help, either telephone
the Parish Office at 225-387-5928 or email us at

A lot of people may think we’re on retreat.
Nope, not this week! (That happens in October
each year, at Manresa House of Retreats down on
the River Road in Convent, Louisiana.) This is
more study and fraternity: one guy observed that
we “learn and laugh” together! We can all
learn more, because we all want to be better shepherds within our Parish communities. But it’s not
all work: although the priesthood is a wonderful,
vast brotherhood in many ways, we priests don’t

from all over the Diocese of Baton Rouge will
receive the Holy Spirit when Bishop Muench
administers the Sacrament of Confirmation to
them here at the Cathedral.

THE DEACON’S CORNER
SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION
Dear Friends in Christ,
Catholics throughout the Diocese of Baton Rouge
are welcome to choose their Cathedral for the celebration of the Sacraments. The Parish Office (225-3875928) schedules these.
In the Gospel for this Sunday we see
Jesus teaching right up until the end.
He tells His disciples:
INFANT BAPTISM
Parents must attend a required pre-baptismal parents’ seminar as well as schedule the baptism.
“Thus it is written that the Christ would
suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and
that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be
preached in His name to all the nations, beginning
from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.
And behold I am sending the promise of my Father
upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed
with power from on high.”
ADULT BAPTISM
Preparation for adult Sacramental Initiation
(Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) takes place
through the Parish’s RCIA process throughout the
year.
He was interpreting various Bible passages for the
disciples, helping them to understand the purpose of
His mission and the mission to which He appointed
them. It is important to understand that He is appointing us to that very same mission. But just like
the Apostles needed continued education, we too need
continued education. As we begin the Catholicism
101 program here at the Cathedral, we all have an opportunity to do just that. It is an especially golden opportunity for those of us with stale or muddled
knowledge of our faith to get a refresher course, and
for those who are new to the faith to go a little deeper
into just what it is to be a Catholic. I highly encourage
everyone to attend as many of the sessions as possible.
FIRST PENANCE AND FIRST EUCHARIST
Second grade children, no matter where they attend elementary school, are prepared for these Sacraments each school-year within a special program.
CONFIRMATION
Special, brief preparation programs are held each
Spring, one for our parish’s teenagers who are in the
eleventh grade, and another for other adults who wish
to be confirmed.
MARRIAGE
Church regulations require at least six months of
preparation for a wedding. Our advice is to call well in
advance of that time if you wish to reserve a wedding
date and receive information: one’s own parish clergy
are expected to supervise your Catholic prenuptial
preparation and to officiate at the wedding ceremony
here.
This Sunday also is Mother’s Day. It’s important
for all of us to take the opportunity to tell our mothers
– in prayer or in person – just how special they are to
us. It is also an opportunity for us to pay special attention to Mary, the mother of Our Lord. I heard a comment recently that goes something like this, “Mary is
the bait that Jesus uses to bring us closer to Him.” I
find this beautiful and the love the thought that praying through the intercession of Mary, we become closer to Jesus. The Catholic Church reverences women,
particularly in their roles as mothers and nurturers. I
don’t think God puts men and women in competition
with each other. No, the sexes, male and female were
created to complement each other. Woman completes
man and without women, the world would be in big
trouble. Women’s roles in the family, the Church and
in society are very important; today we pray in thanksgiving for all women, especially those “mothering” in
any way.
STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
The regular collection over the weekend of May 4/5
came to $15,119.00. (162 Identified Givers offered
$14,071.00, while unidentified givers offered another
$1,048.00). The monthly collection for the Maintenance
and Repair of the Cathedral totaled $4,443.00, from 78
identified givers, and the annual collection for The Catholic
Commentator came to $927.00(from 21 identified givers).
As always, thank you for your continued generosity whenever we ask, not only for our own needs here at the Cathedral but for worthy causes elsewhere, too!

APPRECIATING LATIN, WORD BY WORD
This week’s Latin word can also be part of a
word:
ANTE
The word ANTE means “before, previously, in
front, forwards, ahead.” It’s used in Latin as an adverb or preposition. It’s mostly used in English as a
prefix. For instance, the word “antebellum” means
“before the war.” An “antechamber” is a foyer, a
“room you enter before you go into the bigger room,”
so to speak. Probably the most frequently-used English word that begins with ANTE (with a tiny spelling
difference) is the word “anticipate,” meaning “look
forward to” or “expect.”
(And yes, the word “ante” by itself in English refers to the first bet in a poker game, the one that
comes “before” all of the other wagers!)
If you read much theology or other religious
writings, you’ll eventually come across the word
“antecedent,” a noun meaning “a thing or event
that existed before or which logically precedes another.” It refers to the logical progression of things. For
instance, creation came first and redemption second,
so we can say one of redemption’s antecedents is the
creation of the world.
This word can refer to persons, too: just as
family members who follow you in time are called
descendants, your parents and grandparents are antecedents to you. Sometimes it’s kind of interesting
to consider this. Who were your spiritual antecedents, who passed on the faith to you? Parents? A favorite religion teacher or priest? And will anyone ever consider YOU their spiritual antecedent?

the Lord lead and guide her – and her parents, godparents and extended family – all the days of her life!
ORDINATIONS
Everyone is invited to the Cathedral on Saturday, May 25, at 10 am for a special ordination Mass. On that
occasion Bishop Robert Muench will ordain one of our deacons, Joseph Hoang Vu, to the priesthood, and
one of our other seminarians, Joshua Johnson, to the transitional diaconate. It’s the first time such a
“combined” ceremony has been celebrated in the Diocese of Baton Rouge. Everyone is invited to attend the
ordination Mass, and then reception that will follow at the Catholic Life Center on South Acadian Thruway.
Some deacons, like Josh Johnson, are preparing to be priests. For this reason the term “transitional diaconate” is often applied to them. Men (often married men) who anticipate spending their lives as deacons usually
use the term “permanent diaconate.” But, as Bishop Muench likes to point out, the ministry of and commitment
to selfless service for both kinds of deacon is exactly the same!
This is an exciting time for these two young men – and for the future of our diocesan Church! Let us pray for
them as they begin lives of fulltime service to God and His people. May the Lord’s wisdom guide them and His
grace sustain them!

UN TI MORCEAU
(“A Little Something”)
This little series of ti morceaux has been considering the various parts of the Mass. The most recent articles have dealt with the Gospel reading. We’ve almost come to the end of the first half of the
Eucharistic celebration, known as the Liturgy of the Word.
While objectively the Bible readings are the most important part of the Liturgy of the Word, I
don’t think that’s true when considered in another way. From a subjective standpoint, the next part of
the Mass is usually the most important: the homily. This is so because this is the point when the message of God is applied to our situation today.
Note the contrast! The texts of Scripture are unchanging. While different translations can be employed, the original, “official” Hebrew and Greek text of the Bible doesn’t change. It can’t change! And
so God’s Word has a reliability and timeless quality. But the way God’s Word is applied in the homily is
supposed to be geared to each distinct assembly. Priests and deacons are not supposed to preach the
same “sermon” again and again, as if the unique composition of each congregation didn’t matter. No,
the Church requires Catholic preachers to give homilies, applying divine Revelation to our own situations, which are ever changing.

Leigh Ann Cloudet, and Matthew Sullan Cloudet,
and Raina Aerie Whitfield, Jalia Elise Norwood,
and Jaylin Lydia Juneau) received Our Lord in
the Eucharist for the very first time. First Holy
Communion is an important step on our journey
of faith, and we pray for them and welcome them
to this increased awareness of the Lord!
