A father’s experience raising a
child with special needs
On a perfect February day seven years ago our third child, Gaby, was born.
She was beautiful yet something was wrong, as she seemed sleepy and
exhausted all the time. As Gaby started to miss her developmental milestones
(playing with her feet, rolling over, etc.) the sense of despair started to take
over. Even with the best efforts of specialist, a diagnosis and therefore
treatment never came, except for the fact that Gaby had both severe mental
and physical disability. The feeling of loneliness was overwhelming.
Then my wife Lulú heard of services for parents of children with disabilities
offered at Paso Del Norte Children’s Development Center, including the
Academies, the Respite program and also the Annual CDIC Symposium. To our
relief we came to find out that we were not alone in this process of raising a
child with special needs and that everything would be all right. Other parents
that had gone thru this were more than eager to help, as they understood
what we were going thru. Since then, they, along with Gaby’s therapists,
doctors and teachers have been our best friends.
As I write this I cannot help but think of how blessed I am that Gaby has been
entrusted to me, and to my family, including my other daughters Mariana and
Fatima, as she, along with the people we have met along the way, have
brought a higher sense of purpose to all of us.

Summer time is usually a busy time, but it may also be a
good time to freshen up on our advocacy skills or to
learn new things. I am a graduate of our Leadership
Academy for Families, now known as the Parents as
Leaders Academy. My participation in this training
changed my life. I learned so many things that I had no
idea about. This training, sparked my interest in learning
more and realizing that information is power. This is
why I am excited to announce that this summer, there
will be an opportunity for past graduates of any of our
Academies to participate in different workshops that will
provide much needed information. If you have not
experienced any of our Academies, I encourage you to
do so! Anyone is welcome to attend the workshops that
we will be offering during the summer, but we thought
of offering them because of all the parents that have
graduated from our Academies this year.
I hope to see many of you here.
