What started out as a crazy idea to gather a few like-minded strangers is still going - after all these years and in fact, is better than ever. Thank-you everyone !!! PHIP (Parrot Heads In Paradise Inc.) is the governing body thru which ALL of the Parrot Head clubs worldwide receive their charter to operate. We are required to send them our membership report at the beginning of every year. We were proud to report that “ The State of the Phlock ” in Western New York now stands at 272 members. That IS a new membership record for The Western New York Parrot Head Club !!! Ladies and gentlemen, that puts us in the Top 20 of all clubs WORLDWIDE !!! The word is getting out about the WNYPHC and all that it has to offer. Can we pass the 300 member mark in 2015 ?? Speaking of what we have to offer, the past few months have been great. We broke all kinds of attendance records during our annual January Christmas party. We broke all kinds of attendance records at our monthly phlocking in April. Our ninth annual Chillin’ in the Caribbean event raised $13,000 for Make-A-Wish and broke all kinds of attendance records. The (Pre) Party in Marty’s ( and Moe’s ) room broke attendance records. I can’t say Thank You enough for all of your efforts in making this event such a overPage 1 David Cohen whelming success. What a smoothly run, action packed, well attended event !!! Please know that you have all played an important role in our club having the ability to donate over $60,000 to the Make-A-Wish organization thru the years…. Looks like 2014 is off to a strong start. With the concert season coming upon us we can all look forward to great shows and a summer to make us forget about the miserable winter we had this year. I am anticipating a great summer for the club. Remember - our monthly phlocking venues will move to outdoor locations so check the website for more information… www.wnyphc.com Phins All, David Jimmy Bu ffe tt re le ased the holida y a lbu m “C hr ist ma s Isl an d” in 1 99 6, an d it pe a ked a t #2 7 on t he B illboa rd A lbu m Ch ar t . Parrot Head Christmas Ray J. - Who doesn’t look forward to our (after) Christmas Party?? All the holiday stress has passed and you can relax with your fellow Parrot Heads in your flip-flops. Jim Weldy of “The Boys of Summer” was featured in an entertainment line - up that included Duane Teston, Bob Schiele and from Parrot Radio - DJ Rocky. For a few short hours we forgot about the worst Buffalo winter in a decade and dreamt of tropical destinations. Other than the music, the Christmas Party is all about the food !!! Almost twenty feet of table space crammed with everything– from gumbo, sandwiches, pizza, dips, croissants, chocolates, cookies...it’s a calorie killer for sure. The party concluded with a Secret Santa gift exchange and the awarding of the mega prize chosen from entries earned thru your Phlocking attendance. Winner of the Margaritaville Drink Mixer was Bonnie Haggerty. See you next year... During his fight, Jimmy Buffett brought a group of musicians together, playing a tribute to their friend. The album “ Quiet About It,” features many artists and is available for purchase. Mailboat Records Jesse Winchester James Ridout Winchester was born in Bossier City, Louisiana during 1944 and is considered to be an iconic songwriter of his time. His passing on April 11th came after a long struggle with cancer, but was quite unexpected, as it was just announced he was a music headliner of the 2014 MOTM convention on the Casa Marina Main Stage. Jesse released fourteen albums during his 40 year career and was also a very talented musician. A resident of Virginia during his later days, he was also a Canadian citizen during the 1970’s due to his objections over the Vietnam War. Canada is where he met Robbie Robertson of “The Band,” and was introduced to the music business. A self-titled debut came out in 1970. His three albums in the 1980’s included some of his best charting US singles with“ Talk Memphis, Rhumba Man, The Brand New Tennessee Waltz, Biloxi, Nothin’ But a Breeze, Say What, and Yankee Lady.” A prolific songwriter over the years, he penned songs for Elvis Costello, Joan Baez, The Everly Brothers, Wynonna Judd, George Strait, Patti Page, Reba McIntyre, & Jimmy Buffett. A Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers was given in 2007 for his many works. His legacy on the music scene will not be forgotten…. Sail on Jesse. They struggled to find their fame and fortune as performers in Nashville. By the time 1996 rolled around, they were burned out and needed a rest. They decided to travel to Myrtle Beach and put their feet in the sand for awhile. Whether it was luck or fate, the house band at the resort needed to be replaced and Tom and Michelle decided to spend their summer making a few bucks playing for the tourists. A funny thing happened along the way –the aspiring Grand ole’ Opry performers found pleasure in playing beach, dance and party music. Now performing as “Latitude,” the duo began traveling the coast bringing sunshine, palm trees & sandy beaches wherever they went. Self-described as entertaining, energetic, and fun - music is now their full time profession. They’ve now ventured out to sea, playing onboard cruise ships. Five released CD’s of original music now proves the house band plays more than covers !!! Page 3 Tom and Michelle Becker are both talented musicians whose vocal talents have won them numerous awards. They’ve been voted Trop-Rock Group of the Year five times, and Michelle just garnered her fifth female vocalist of the year award at the 2013 Trop - Rock Awards held during MOTM. They will be performing at our WNYPHC house concert series. More information will be forthcoming very soon. Stay tuned! Jimmy Buffett is credited with singing back -up vocals on the 1979 album “The Long Run” by the Eagles... Doct or Andy’ s Day For Kids Doctor Andrew Gage and some of his fellow colleagues at Sister’s Hospital found themselves in a difficult situation. The Neo-Natal unit needed some very expensive equipment to care for premature babies and infants, but there was no money in the budget to purchase it. A fundraising idea was born. The Doctors and Nurses would collect items and donations for an Auction/Raffle, with the proceeds going to fund the equipment purchase. The size and scope of their event grew. This year’s Doctor Andy’s Day For Kids marked its 20th anniversary, and they have raised to date over $300,000. The efforts of the Doctors, Nurses and Staff at Sister’s Hospital have certainly honored the memory of Dr. Andy since his tragic passing in 2005. Our own Doctor David Walborn joined his fellow medical brethren behind the bar once again at The Buffalo Brew Pub in Williamsville. Dressed in some festive costumes, the doctors served the attendees their beverage and gave their tips to the cause. The Nurses staffed the heated tent in the parking lot with over a hundred Baskets up for grabs. We had a very large showing once again from the WNYPHC, and our presence does not go unnoticed !!! Doctor David extends his sincere thanks for your support in making this day such a huge success. He reports over $28,500 was raised during this years event !!! Simply Amazing. It’s always a very well guarded secret prior to the day of the event what Doctor Dave’s outfit will be. The inspiration seems to be Ronald McDonald meets Shirley Temple. A fun time was had by all the bartenders who dress up and serve the crowd its beverages June 7th, 2014 @ NCCC…. Join the WNYPHC cycling team today!!! Page 4 The Chart Room was not only the first place Jimmy performed in Key West - but where he first met Jane. Parrot Head Poker This year’s Parrot Head Poker Tournament introduced a new wrinkle to the event - a Beginner’s table. Participants who had plenty of enthusiasm but little poker experience could play low stake games at their own pace. Alan Swan, who once again chaired the festivities, tutored the new players on the basic mechanics and strategies of the game…. David - The 3rd Annual Poker Tournament was held at the Gratwick Fire hall and almost two dozen players started the afternoon vying for the Title. The introduction of tables for new players was a success, even though they were a tad too boisterous for some of the more serious players. The poker action at the High Stakes Table was very competitive, but in the end it came down to two men playing a winner takes all hand of poker. Ron Smith lost the agonizing game when his victory seemed all but assured. All of the Poker participants enjoyed lunch and a beverage, included in a very low price. Whether you were a seasoned pro, or learning the game for the first time - it was a phun way to spend an afternoon !!! ( from top– left, counter-clockwise)-The action on the floor was intense, while the lucky winners from the Beginner tables - Peggy, Annie and Rob flash some green for the camera. The ladies pause from heated poker action at one table, but just who was drinking two Land Sharks at a time ??? Finally, Alan is preparing to smack Ron Smith for having to leave the final round to attend his niece’s birthday party. Despite having the most chips, Ron & David Leible played a final hand of winner takes all for the title. Lady luck smiled on Dave as he took home honors on the High Stakes Table. FYI - Ron made it on time to the birthday party! Page 5 Landshark Lager Beer debuted in the United States market in 2007, and it is brewed by Anhauser Busch. St. Patrick’s Day Parade Old First Ward, Buffalo Dennis and Debbie Adams once again chaired the WNYPHC entry into the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The Old First Ward route re-traces the original parade organized by the Irish immigrant community in the City of Buffalo first held in 1913. This year’s float included a “ powder room ” for all the participants to check their boa’s and shamrocks . Despite the frigid temperatures, our hardy group passed out many cases of purple beads to the throng of waiting kids along the well-attended parade. Thank-you to Audra and Dee for providing us with visual proof of all the phun and phestivities. Great job ( again ) Dennis & Debbie !!! Page 6 The song, “Why Don’t We Get Drunk and Screw” was wri tten by Marvi n Gardens — an alias used by Ji mmy Buffett . Chillin’ in the Caribbean IX VFW Pvt. Leonard Post 6251 “ The manager told me the capacity of this room is 20 people. You’ve got to lose a dozen or he is going to call security. I suggest we have a tribal council like they do on Survivor & vote them out. Fortunately for me I have an immunity idol.” The ninth edition of “ Chillin’ in the Caribbean” saw 350 people gather to celebrate the WNYPHC and support our local Make-A-Wish Foundation. The VFW Pvt. Leonard Post 6251 hosted the festivities once again. The music line-up featured our own Tim Lewis & Bob Shiele opening for “The Island Castaways” -hailing from Boston, Massachusetts. The Baskets, Raffles and Auction items were impressive as always and helped the club reach our fundraising goal. Thank you everyone for an incredible evening and a phun event !!! “Come Monday,” was the first Top 40 song by Jimmy Buffett — reaching #30 on Billboard’s Pop Music chart Chillin’ in the Caribbean IX VFW Pvt. Leonard Post 6251 How many cases of Landshark would you order for a party with 350 invited guests ? How many pounds of jerk chicken would you cook? Who is getting all the table covers? What equipment will you need for the band to set up ? The list goes on and on…. It takes a lot of time and volunteered effort to make it all work. But every year we set our goals a little higher, to make it a better night for every member in the club and do what we can to make things a little easier for the children who belong to Make-A-Wish. We realized after last year’s event that we needed to tap into the varied resources at our disposal - the almost 300 strong membership of the WNYPHC. We asked for your assistance in running our ever-growing event and so many of you said “what can we do,” that we ran out of things to do. The Officers and the Board Of Directors can’t tell you how much we appreciated all your hard work and efforts….. To all our Chillin’ in the Caribbean IX Chairpersons, Volunteers and Attendees Thank You !!! We couldn’t have done it without you. He supplies me with good stuff… and not just 12 yr old Appleton’s. Jimmy’s first album was “Down To Earth,” which was released in 1970 on the Barnaby Record Label. Cruisin’ the Tropics Seneca Lake Wine Trail Another Trip Around the Sun… ( Jimmy Buffett ) APRIL The WNYPHC travelled to Seneca Lake for their annual tropical - themed weekend. We boarded a luxury bus for a day of food and wine sampling. Our group finished with a final tally of 11 wineries, 2 breweries and 1 distillery. Very impressive Parrot Heads !!! We had many delicious appetizers and desserts at each winery - including cheeseburgers !!! There were snacks on the bus - shared in our usual fashion amongst all. Jimmy’s concert from Anguilla played thru one final snow storm on the ride home. Thank you to everyone for a great day !!! It is our own Dr. Bill Krieger demonstrating his skills and shooting prowess during a recent intermission of a Buffalo Sabre hockey game. He’s been a member of the ice crew since 2005. You will observe him trying to annoy visiting players with every pass of his shovel during stoppages in play. Contract talks very soon ??? Page 9 Check out the website “www.BuffettNews.com” for all things related to the life & times of Jimmy Buffett. The 9th Annual Benefit for the Everglades Foundation normally brings out New York’s power players and big-name entertainment over the Presidents Day weekend. The Zac Brown Band was featured for this years gala. Imagine the surprise 800 people got when Jimmy Buffett came out and joined the band for a few songs. In a reprise of their iconic 2010 CMT Crossroads Concert, they performed “Where The Boat Leaves From, Volcano, A Pirate Looks at 40, Toes, Free / Into the Mystic and Margaritaville.” It seems this partnership continues to blossom as both Jimmy and Zac include each other’s songs in their set lists... Phins & Pins Edge Bowling Center March 4, 2014 Raymond G. Hertel In Memoriam The 2nd season of our Phins and Pins bowling league is rapidly drawing to a close. The action on the lanes has been intense all season, with Angelina’s Avengers trying to unseat The Pinheads at the top. We’ve had perfect 300 games from David Cohen, Bob Flatley & David Kroll. Only one session remains on May 4th, which will close with a special Cinco de Mayo Banquet for all the bowlers who made this such a huge success. Join us for a ‘Rita, Landshark, and Buffett music !!! ...After 85 years of enjoying everything life had to offer, he rejoined his beloved wife Anne at the big Euchre game in the sky. He joined our club late in life when he determined that being a trustee of his church, member of Catholic War Vets #868 and running a food pantry wasn’t enough.
