PICNIC AT CALEDON PLACE
Gather your families and friends and spend a fun-filled day at the
29th Annual Japanese Canadian Community Picnic to be held at

do the same? You can partake in the ever-popular afternoon bingo,
and games and races for children and the young at heart. A pond

enjoy Canada Day in the great outdoors. This year admission is

JCCC SUMMER MOVIES
Samurai Action - with a Comic Touch
Tange Sazen and the Pot
of a Million Ryo - Tange
Sazen: Hyakuman Ryo
no Tsubo
Tange Sazen, a oneeyed, one-armed ronin
was introduced in the
pages of national newspaper Mainichi Shimbun
by author Fubo Hayashi
(1900-1935) in 1927.
Due to its popularity,
twelve feature films
based on the character and his exploits were produced from
1935 through 1966.
In 2005 the character was revived in director Toshio
Tsuda's remake of the original 1935 feature Tange Sazen:
Hyakuman Ryo no Tsubo (aka - Tange Sazen and the Pot
Worth a Million Ryo). This remake is helmed by freshman
director Toshio Tsuda, starring Etsushi Toyokawa as Sazen
and Emi Wakui as Ofuji, his quick-witted wife. This marks the
34th film in the series of Tange Sazen, and this comedy of
errors involves an urn that is worth a million Ryo!
With a witty script that combines fast-paced storytelling
with classical Japanese humor, it is a treat for film fans that
Tange Sazen has finally returned to our big screens!
Date: Thursday June 30
Time: 7pm
Admission: $7 ($5 JCCC members)
Always - Sanchome no Yuki - Sunset of Third Street
Winner of 12 Japanese
Academy Awards including Best Picture.
Join us for a sweet nostalgic portrait of the people
of Tokyo in a more innocent age. Based on the
long-selling manga by
Ryohei Saigan, "Always"
inspires Japanese people's nostalgia to its good
old 1950's, with a huge visual effects effort to reproduce the era,
including the half-built Tokyo Tower. The story is rather simple everyday life of the good town's people, their dreams, hopes,
love and tears, but the film was a big hit and highly acclaimed
due to its great balance of its powerful cast, well told story and
the nostalgic cinematography.
The film won 12 out of all 13 categories in Japan
Academy Awards 2006, including the best picture, best director, best actor, best supporting actor, and best supporting
actress.
The film was directed by Takashi Yamazaki and stars
Hidetaka Yoshioka, Koyuiki and Shinichi Tsutsumi.
Date: Thursday July 27
Time: 7pm
Admission: $7 (($5 JCCC members)

THE JCCC BAZAAR 2006
A TRIUMPH OF GENEROSITY,
VOLUNTEERISM AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT
What happens when you combine 300 volunteers, 4000 community members and friends, thousands of bargains and one cool,
sunny spring day? You have JCCC Bazaar 2006!
The JCCC Bazaar was held on May 6 and proved to be another
enormous success – one of the biggest since our move to
Garamond. Over four thousand people descended on the cultural
centre in search of bargains and very few went home disappointed. The Centre was chock-a-block with great deals, good food
and friendly faces. The Bazaar is the biggest single fundraising
event of the year and it is successful for two key reasons, both to
be found in the generosity of the community. Every year individuals and companies donate an extraordinary volume of “stuff” to be
sold – everything from high-end electronics, art, knick-knacks,
baked goods, chinaware…the list is endless. The generosity of the
community also manifests itself in its incredible generosity of spirit – hundreds of volunteers come out to plan and run the event;
many thousands more show up to scoop up deals and, in doing
so, providing the JCCC with much needed funds.
We would like to offer our sincere thanks to the great organizing committee, the wonderful volunteers and the community for
making this year another great success.
The JCCC wishes to thank the following donors for their generous
support of Bazaar 2006

KAMP KODOMO… THE NEXT GENERATION
Don’t miss out on all the summer fun at the JCCC!!! Kamp
Kodomo is returning for another summer filled with cultural activities.
Helen Fukuda has directed this program for many years with
her infectious energy and enthusiasm for sharing Japanese culture. Helen’s move to Japan later this year leaves us with the great
challenge of carrying on in her absence. In order to do this, we are
engaging her original assistants as well as a committee of educators from the community. We hope to keep all that is great about
the original Kamp Kodomo and also bring in some new activities
to reflect the areas of specialty from the teachers’ committee.
The camp operates from 9:00am - 4:30pm from Monday to
Friday. There will be three sessions offered: July 10 – 14, July 17
– 21, and July 24 – 28. Fees for this program are $159 per child
for a 5-day session. A 10% discount will be applied for JCCC
members and additional children from the same family will receive
a 5% discount. Extended camp care is available from 8:00 9:00am and from 4:30 - 6:00pm with an additional cost of $25 per
session. Camp fees cover all materials, two nutritional snacks per
day, and a special activity once a week (which may include an outside excursion). Kampers are required to bring a lunch and drink.
So call us today, as the registration deadline is June 26 and
Kamp Kodomo’s maximum attendance is 40 children per session.
For more information or to register, please consult the enclosed
flyer, call 416-441-2345 or check the website at www.jccc.on.ca.

IN MEMORY OF WILLIAM KAZUO AOKI
- JUDO SENSEI
November 17, 1929 – April 12, 2006
By Gerald N. Okimura
Bill Aoki (standing, right) with other JCCC sensei
A familiar face often seen in the JCCC Judo dojo was Sensei Bill
Aoki. Aoki Sensei passed away surrounded by his family at the
youthful age of 77.
In reference to Judo years where most of us have been doing
it for literally decades, I’ve only known Bill for a short period of
time; 1/3 of about 45 years of my Judo life. During that period my
respect for Bill had grown from huge to immense. His devotion to
Judo wasn’t based on fame and fortune, but for the love of Judo.
As with many Judo sensei, we don’t get paid. Bill volunteered
many of his hours, days, months and years to teach, coach, or
assist anyway he could to help us, I’m sure sometimes at the sacrifice of his family time. Always leading by example, Bill wouldn’t
ask us to do anything he wouldn’t do himself. This included
attending Kata seminars, NCCP certification, or coaching at tournaments.
Bill accepted everyone who came to the dojo to practice,
helping anyone willing to learn. He mentored us, making us
improve not only our Judo, but our attitudes towards Judo.
Bill’s Judo history started during the War in 1942 at the internment camp in Tashme, BC, under the tutelage of Sensei Shigetaka
Sasaki. Bill moved to Toronto after the war. In 1948, he continued
his training at the West-End YMCA with Sensei Frank Mukai,
before relocating to the Kidokan Judo Club in 1951 where he practiced under the leadership of Sensei Stephen Kamino, the
Godfather of Canadian Judo.
I am told that after he move to Toronto, as a competitor he had
to compete against much larger, stronger and heavier Judoka not
typically found at the internment camps during the war. Back then,
there was no weight division at tournaments as there is now; all
open weight. Bill used his smaller stature and speed to his benefit, often using his fast waza to drop his much larger opponents to
defeat before they even knew what happened.
In 1954, he received his Shodan along with his confreres
Messrs Harry Henning, Mits Kamino and Frank Moritsugu. He
continued to compete and referee in Canadian and American tournaments earning his Nidan in 1959 and his Sandan in 1964.
During 1965 to 66, his Judo knowledge grew under the instruction
of Kododan Sensei Takata from Japan.
When the JCCC first opened in 1964, Sensei Kamino
“requested” Sensei Peter Hasegawa to open a Judo dojo there. In
1967, Bill joined with Hasegawa Sensei at the Centre and began
instructing the junior and senior classes along with Sensei
Genichiro Nakahara, Frank Idenouye, Atsushi Miura; Frank
Moritsugu and Frank Murata. After moving to the new Centre
location on Garamond, Bill took on the task as Head Sensei of the
Seidokai Judo Club in 2000 where he led classes with senior
instructors Darrell Sakauye, Bruce Tatemichi, Bill Sund and myself,
Gerry Okimura. Other sensei that joined later on included Sensei
Duncan Vignale, Rick Koglin, Florente Balagasay and Edward Ng.
At the Centre, Bill also mentored many students helping them
achieve their Yudansha (Black Belt Level) including Carlo
Balagasay, Derek Chow, Edward Ng and Michael Tam, and guided
a number of the Yudansha to their next dan: Bill Sund – Yondan;
Darrell Sakauye and Gerald Okimura – Sandan; Bruce Tatemichi
and Florente Balagasay,- Nidan.
Bill finally received his Yondan in 2001 under the sponsorship
of then Judo Ontario President, Duncan Vignale. Bill retired from
teaching the junior and senior classes in 2003, but always kept in
touch with many of the instructors and students.
And now, we his students are his legacy. His love of Judo, his
knowledge and his dedication to all he did are all seeds that continue to grow in all his Judoka and will exist as long as we are alive
and pass on his teachings. We have reaped the benefit of his work
and we are the ones richer for knowing him.
Bill Aoki Sensei will be greatly missed.
CONGRATULATIONS SPEECH
CONTEST WINNERS
Submitted by TJLS
The 27th Annual Okamatsu-sho Contest was held on May 13, 2006
at the Orde Street Public School Auditorium. This year's contest
was probably the best that the Toronto Japanese Language School
(TJLS) has had to date. Participation by the students was excellent,
as both the old hands and newcomers demonstrated their Japanese
language talents and vied for one of the trophies to be won.
Supported by fellow students, parents and friends, the Sensei were
equally excited as the hall of the Orde Street Public School filled up
to well beyond the maximum seating capacity. Student’s participation in the contest encompassed one or more representatives from
every class level and covered a wide variety of different topics. The
dedication, coaching and assistance of the Sensei was evident with
every new contestant's speech.

Mr. Mits Sumiya
An Evening With World War 2
Angler P.O.W. Camp #101 survivor
Canadian born Mits Sumiya was imprisoned at the infamous northern Ontario POW
camp from 1942 to 1946 for protesting and resisting the evacuation of the entire west
coast Nikkei population in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor. His crime? Standing up for his
rights as a Canadian!
Several hundred issei and Canadian-born nisei, many of whom were members of the
Nisei Mass Evacuation Group, who protested against the government’s decision to
separate men from their families were interned in interior British Columbia internment
camps, their homes and property confiscated by the Canadian government.
Mr. Sumiya was born on Bowen Island, BC. The son of Jukichi and Odai Sumiya, they
were a “logging family” who moved with the camp. The family finally settled in
Vancouver where Mits attended Central Public School, Vancouver Technical High
School and the University of British Columbia where he, along with other nisei, was a
member of the Canadian Officer’s Training Corp. When the government order was
made to remove all Canadian-born Nikkei and Japanese nationals from the BC west
coast, to confiscate their property, then to place everyone into the Hastings Park
Fairgrounds where families lived in animal stalls, the UBC student who aspired to study
nuclear physics, had had enough:
“As a British subject and having taken the oath of loyalty to the crown, I should not be
and will not be exiled from my home!” The intransigency resulted in his incarceration at
P.O.W. Camp #101 Angler. Upon release in 1946, he settled in Port Credit, Ontario. He
had a long and successful career as an engineer.
Mits has served the Nikkei community for several decades. He is currently Director of
the Toronto Buddhist Church, General secretary of TBC Sangha and a Director of the
Momiji Foundation.

Federal Budget 2006 Provides Increased
Incentive to Donors
“Alice came to the fork in the road ‘Which road do I take?’ she asked. ‘That all depends a good deal on
where you want to go’ responded the Cheshire Cat. ‘I don’t know’ Alice answered. ‘Then,’ said the Cheshire
Cat, ‘it doesn’t matter which way you go.”
- From Alice in Wonderland
The Recent Federal Budget has given all Canadians
a great opportunity to go down the road towards
directing their capital appreciated assets to charity
as opposed to going down the other road in paying
the full taxable rate on capital gains to the Receiver
General of Canada.
The Canadian Government has recently made
positive changes to the Federal Budget that will allow
Canadians better incentives in which to donate to
charity. While the option of donating publicly-listed
securities to charities has been available for some
time, the federal budget of May 2, 2006 has made it a
much more attractive proposition.
Effective immediately, donors will no longer be
taxed on the capital gains accrued on securities such
as public company shares, bonds, mutual fund units
and employee stock options donated to a registered
charity. This is excellent news for the nonprofit sector
and for donors.
Under the new taxation rules, if a person donates
stock that was originally purchased for $400 and now
has a fair market value of $1000, they will receive a
tax receipt for $1000 and will not have to pay any tax
on the gain.
We expect that this incentive will be well received,
resulting in an increase in the number of gifts of
publicly traded shares to all charities.
“Charities play an invaluable role in assisting
Canadians, and in contributing to our sense of
community and to important projects in the cultural,
education and social sectors.” Budget 2006
