In turn, the University is strengthened by the collaboration among those participants whose collective experiences enrich this program and possibilities ahead as all of us work together to build our communities. I truly believe that we are all stewards of someplace for a very short period of time, and the best thing that we can do is to leave a place better when we leave than when we found it. Effective leadership is the key. Leaders are found at all levels of all organizations. To be the most effective leader that you can be you have to have one thing – followers. If you don’t have people that follow you, no matter how good you think you are, you are not a leader. Effective leadership also requires integrity, which must be practiced every day, all day. If you have the respect from others, there is nothing that is impossible to accomplish. “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” ~ John F. Kennedy It is my hope that the Leaders in Training Institute will challenge you to reflect upon our leadership style and discover the ways all of us – emerging and seasoned leaders alike – will be able to generate the respect and impact that will better serve our organizations and communities. As the second year of the Coastal Carolina University Leaders in Training Institute takes shape, I hope that you will discover this opportunity to be a valuable part of your professional development. Sincerely, David A. DeCenzo President, Coastal Carolina University 1 2011 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) once said, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” Leaders in Training is an innovative program that represents the commitment of public, private and community leaders to building strong organizational capability by support in the growth and development of employees. The strategic intent of this program is to foster a talent-driven culture, with the primary goal of building a strong leadership pipeline for the future. Coastal Carolina University’s Leaders in Training Institute will sponsor intensive and engaging workshops that focus on high levels of self-reflection and self-awareness in terms of current leadership styles and competencies. LIT will raise each participant’s self-reflection and awareness and serve as a catalyst for building long-term and effective leadership transformations. LIT will enable participants to analyze their current leadership practices and effectively identify and assess their strengths and weaknesses. As participants become better acquainted with their own leadership characteristics, intensive training in the areas of authentic leadership, organizational leadership, best-practices leadership and change leadership will be explored. This intensive four-module program has been designed to bring together areas of leadership development that will produce a dramatic shift in leadership skills and performance. It’s an opportunity to interact with remarkable people, to express thoughts and ideas effectively and to gain a deeper understanding of the participant’s positive contribution to him/herself, the university/organization and the community. This program is designed primarily for practicing professionals seeking advanced knowledge in the area of leadership development. 2011 LEADERS in TRAINING INSTITUTE 2 2011 AUTHENTIC LEADERSHIP One of the keys to building a strong leadership foundation in any organization is the willingness of the leader to know his authentic self. For many leaders, the realization that adding value to an organization requires changing the mind-set that leadership competency is not only about getting results but also about touching the organization through personal presence and relationships. In short, leaders must make and maintain authentic connections with the people who work daily to create successful organizations. MARCH 29-30, 2011 TUESDAY, MARCH 29 “It’s imperative to identify individuals who have leadership potential and then intentionally grow those leaders by teaching the tried-and- true leadership principles. I’ve been able to take what I’ve learned in the LIT program back to the office and share that information with my colleagues and my boss. Because of LIT, I have been a more effective leader and of greater value as an employee at Santee Cooper.” Clayton Mauldin, LIT 2010 Retail Office Manager Santee Cooper There are many organizational variables that influence the nature and impact of leadership. The way leaders treat employees influences the way employees treat customers. Leaders have to address organizational factors that drive positive intentions and subsequent performance. One without the other will not achieve the desired results. This module will focus on the interpersonal influences and performance demands that leaders need to address if they and their organizations are to be successful. Organizational leadership involves processes and proximal outcomes (such as employee commitment) that contribute to the development and achievement of organizational purpose. It is a leader’s responsibility to add value to the organization by giving a sense of understanding and purpose to its overall activities and human capital assets.
