CCU Commits to Live Well!
On August 1st, CCU's tobacco free policy will go into effect. It will be in force 24 hours per day, 7 days
a week. The new policy will prohibit the use of all tobacco and smoke related products on campus.
This applies to everyone...faculty, staff, students and visitors. The details of the new policy can be
found at www.coastal.edu/livewell. The support and commitment of the entire CCU community to
promote this and other "live well" initiatives. Below you will find a sampling of frequently asked

Why is Coastal Carolina University becoming a Tobacco Free Campus?
In an effort to promote a safe, clean and healthy environment for students, employees, volunteers,
affiliates, contractors, vendors, visitors and guests, Coastal Carolina University will become a tobaccofree campus. This policy will ensure the existence of a tobacco-free environment so that negative
effects of tobacco usage are minimized on our campus and in our community.
What tobacco products are covered under this new policy?
All forms of tobacco and smoke-related products (including e-cigarettes) are prohibited. Refer to
www.coastal.edu/livewell for a complete listing.
Where is the use of tobacco products prohibited?
The use of all tobacco products is prohibited on all property that is owned, operated, occupied,
controlled or leased by the University or University-related organization, including but not limited to
building, structures and grounds. Refer to FAQ for specific details.
Are employees, students and others covered under this policy required to quit using tobacco
products?
No. Coastal Carolina University is not asking anyone to quit. This policy simply means that no one
can use tobacco products on Coastal Carolina University property or grounds.
Are there any resources available if I want to quit using tobacco products?
Absolutely. Listings of Employee Resources and Student Resources can be found at

Emergencies happen
On occasion, it is necessary for CCU to make contact with an employee's
family member or friend when an emergency occurs. Since emergencies are
usually unexpected, it is critical for all employees to keep their emergency
contact information current. This information can be updated through WebAdvisor, any time, from any
where.
To view/update your emergency contact information:
*Go to webadvisor.coastal.edu.
*Log into webadvisor
*Click on the "Employee Emergency Data Form" link (under "Employee Profile" section)
*Review and update (as appropriate)
*Click on submit
Please make every effort to keep your emergency contact information current. In other words...help us, help
you, should an emergency arise.
Dependent Child Scholarship
Dependent children of faculty and staff members in certain positions are eligible for a Dependent
Child Scholarship. This scholarship is for 50% off of tuition.
Eligibility:

Faculty/Staff member must be employed at least 30 hours per week in a slotted, time-limited,
research grant or temporary grant position.

Faculty/Staff member must have completed at least twelve months of continuous service.

Dependent children must be defined as such based on IRS tax code and must be reported on IRS
1040 form.

Qualified dependent child must be admitted as students by CCU

Qualified dependent child must be enrolled full time during the Fall or Spring semester.

Qualified dependent child must maintain academic eligibility for continued enrollment at CCU.
Program Provisions:

Application must be submitted for each semester of attendance.

The program does not pay for expenses incurred or required by courses such as textbooks, field
trips, lab fees, distance learning fees or Business major fees.

The program is only available for the attainment of the first baccalaureate degree.

Retirement Contribution Rates Increasing Effective July 1, 2014
Currently, employees participating in the South Carolina Retirement Systems (SCRS) or an
Optional Retirement Program (ORP) through TIAA-Cref, VALIC, MetLife or MassMutual
(formerly The Hartford), are contributing 7.5% of their gross earnings to their account.
Participants in the Police Officer Retirement Systems (PORS) currently contribute 7.84%.
Effective July 1, 2014, participants in SCRS and any of the ORP plans will begin to contribute
8.0% of gross earnings to their accounts. Participants in PORS will contribute 8.41% of gross
earnings. The increase in contributions is effective for working retirees as well.
Some Things to Know Before You Hit the Road
Whether you are traveling in South Carolina, in other parts of the U.S. or around the world,
be sure to:

Carry your health plan and prescription drug I.D. cards.

In an emergency, go to the nearest hospital.
Savings Plan, Standard Plan and BlueChoice HealthPlan HMO members are covered by
BlueCard® and BlueCard Worldwide® outside South Carolina. The programs are explained on
pages 49-51 in the Health Insurance chapter of the Insurance Benefits Guide Book. You may
want to copy these pages and take them with you, especially if you are traveling outside the
U.S. Please note that BlueChoice members have BlueCard coverage only for urgent and
emergency care.
These Tips Can Help Ensure a Smooth Transition
to Retirement
As you think about retirement, be aware that eligibility for retiree group
insurance is not the same as eligibility for retirement. PEBA Insurance Benefits and PEBA
Retirement Benefits have different requirements. PEBA recommends you review the
requirements for retiree group insurance on pages 181-183 of the 2014 Insurance Benefits
Guide before you confirm your retirement date. This Pre-retirement Education presentation
also provides useful information as you consider this major step.
Please remember: To qualify for insurance in retirement, your last five years of employment
must be served consecutively in a full-time, slotted position with an employer that
participates in the state insurance program.

Change in Limits for Student Work Hours in Summer 2014
In order to meet departmental staffing needs, following are the work hour limits for student
assistants for summer 2014.

Students pre-registered for the fall and taking no classes during a summer term, can work up to
37.5 hours.

Students taking one (1) course can work no more than an average of 30 hours during the
summer term in which they are enrolled.

Students taking two (2) or more courses can work no more than an average of 20 hours during
the summer term in which they are enrolled.
Exception: Based on federal regulation, international students are limited to 20 hours per week,
if enrolled in one (1) or more courses.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the hours restriction apply to classroom courses only?
No, the hours restriction applies to classroom courses, distance learning and any other instructional
delivery methods provided by Coastal Carolina University.
Why is there an “average hours” limit? What does that mean?
An average hours limit has been set to ensure the University has the ability to adjust work hours in
order to accommodate departmental needs (e.g. orientation session, special event, etc.).
For example, a student assistant may work 10 hours one week and 30 hours the next week. The
average number of hours is 20. Even if the hours vary, the maximum number of hours a student
assistant can work is 37.5 in a specified work week.
Remember, the average number of hours the student can work while enrolled cannot exceed the
average limits set above.
Who is responsible for monitoring the “average hours” limit for student assistants?
Supervisors will be responsible for ensuring compliance with work hour limitations.
