September 2014 Volume 70 - Issue 8 Official Publication of Kandiyohi Power Cooperative Construction Projects Update Mother Nature didn’t cooperate too well until mid-May when the crews were finally able to start boring and digging. With such a late start, they are hoping for a late fall freeze up. The following is an update on the projects we shared with you in May. Highway #12 and CSAH #9 – Completed Kandiyohi County Road #107 (240th AVE NE) – Completed CSAH #1 and CSAH #27 – Installation completed – removal will take place later Kandiyohi County Rd #116 – Delayed to 2015 Kandiyohi County Rd #116 – Construction will begin mid-September Long Lake Road Cable Replacement – Middle of Construction Horizon Hills Subdivision Cable Replacement – Delayed CSAH #4 – Delayed Kandiyohi County 225th AVE SE – Delayed Brenner Lake Area Line Upgrade Project – Started construction LED - Yard Light Replacement – 2014 project is ½ completed SOLAR WISE ty Communoi rmation y Inf Solar Arra eeting M Kilowatt Pennock Substation Upgrade – Cement and grid work is completed. Sub to be shut down September 8-22nd when they will replace the equipment. The goal is to complete the entire job by the end of September. Several of these projects were delayed when we learned that the county is going to be doing major road construction on County Rd #5 in 2015. This meant we needed to move and bury the lines this year so that we are not in the way of the road construction crews next year. Community Solar Panel Output to be Sold Have you ever wished you could use Nature’s Resources to power your home? Kandiyohi Power Cooperative is making it possible for that wish to become a reality. Installation of KPC’s Community Solar project will begin sometime in September and be energized in October. This project will consist of 40 panels owned by Great River Energy and 140 panels owned by KPC. As a member of KPC, you will be able to purchase the output of these KPC COMMUNITY SOLAR www.kpcoop.com panels. Following are some of the details: • 25 year lease • $1250 investment per panel (24 month loans available) • Panels are located on KPC property by the headquarters building • Solar garden is maintained by KPC • Member will receive a credit on electric bill for the energy generated by your panel(s). If you are interested in renewable energy and using “Nature’s Resource for a Brighter Tomorrow,” contact our office at 320-796-1155 or visit our website at www.kpcoop.com for more information on purchasing a panel(s). Power lines cause injury and death to hundreds each year. Take a moment to review some basic power line safety tips to avoid injury. First and foremost, stay away from downed power lines. Even if you don’t touch the power line, it can still shock you. The electrical current that flows through the line can travel through the ground and into your body. You should maintain a distance of at least ten feet from the line. Do not try to touch it or move it, rather call your local utility company or 911 to report the downed line and make sure others around you know the location of the wire. It is also important to remember to look up and around you as you are working with large equipment. As farmers move into the fields, their equipment is often folded up, making it much taller then it normally is. It can become entangled in overhead power lines, causing a very serious situation. This same situation can also happen when clearing debris after a storm. Be sure to stop, look up and around before moving forward in your equipment. Maintain the 10-foot Circle of Safety Rule: keep everyone and everything – you, the tools and materials you are handling and the equipment you are operating – at least 10 feet away from all overhead power lines. It is a good idea to use a spotter to help locate and steer equipment away from wires. If you should come into contact with a wire in your vehicle or equipment, always assume the wire is live. Stay inside your vehicle and use your cell phone to call 911. You are safer inside until trained help arrives than you are trying to jump clear. You vehicle has become energized from the wire and you should avoid touching the windows and doors. You should warn others to stay clear until help arrives. It is never a good idea to exit a cab or vehicle that is touching a live wire, but if the situation demands that you get out, you should jump clear as far as you can and land with both feet together. Once you are safely out of the vehicle, you should either shuffle away further without lifting your feet off the ground or you should hop away with both feet landing on the ground at the same time. Do not walk or run. This should only be done if you must leave the cab. You are safest remaining inside and waiting for help. It is best to avoid downed power lines all together, but that is not always possible. Remember to call 911 or the utility company if you see one and stay clear. He has seen many changes over the years, including going from physically reading the meters each month to a fully automated process. As Chuck reminisced about his years with KPC, he recalled many memorable stories out in the field. He remembered how Vicki Zimmer fell off the back of the snowmobile while reading meters, teaching her how to find irrigation meters by counting corn rows and watching her jump ditches to check mini maxes (Chuck didn’t have long enough legs to jump across the ditches). He also recalled driving around the first of the month in the winter, letting Vicki read the meters because she was taller and could see them better (I think he just didn’t want to go out into the cold). And then there was Charlie Olson and Chuck driving off the end of a culvert and unable to get the passenger door open for Charlie to get out, Wayne Emberland and Chuck working through the night putting line up after a bad storm, encountering dogs out in the field having one go for his behind and luckily ended up biting into the billfold in his back pocket and one of my favorite stories, while Heading South This Winter? checking a meter he encountered an oncoming car, flying over it and being buried in a snowbank while wearing snowshoes. Chuck said he really doesn’t know what he will do in his retirement because he’s never retired before. Seriously, he hopes to do some projects around the house, travel during the winter months and just enjoy each day as it comes. Saying farewell to KPC isn’t easy. Chuck stated, “It’s been a great 25 years of employment and (I) have appreciated the confidence management has in the employees to do their job. I will miss my fellow employees the most. You spend a lot of time with the people you work with. I enjoyed being out in the field, meeting and visiting KPC members.” We wish Chuck the best in his new journey and will greatly miss his mischievous smirk and wittiness.
