continental highway in the nation. Along the
way in Noble County this historic road passes
by the quaint streets of Kendallville dotted
with historic homes and touches historic Main
Street that is the scene of classic car shows, art
festivals, and the legendary Apple Festival. On
the edge of town wander one of the nation’s
only historic windmill museums and spend
reflective time on the shores of Bixler Lake.
From Kendallville Lima Road (Route 3)
connects many of our family owned Farm to
Fork locations such as Orchard Hill, Maple
Acres, Country Heritage Vineyard, and Cook’s
Bison Ranch. End your journey on the Lima
Road by stopping for a bite at northern
Indiana’s oldest restaurant the St. James in
Avilla, or at the Magpie’s Pizza where they
grow their own tomatoes for their sauce. Be
sure to ask owner Larry about his great
grandfather who survived the Titanic.
Noble County is blessed with over 100
natural lakes, and Route 9 links our two crown
jewels of waterways: Sylvan Lake and Chain
O Lakes State Park. Sylvan Lake is one of
Indiana’s largest manmade lakes that was
carved out of the wilderness to feed the
proposed canal system for the area in the
1830s. Today Sylvan Lake is home to the
breath taking setting of the home and gardens
of famed author and naturalist Gene StrattonPorter. This state historic site contains the
author’s unique home dating from 1914,
gardens, gift shop, and final resting place of
Mrs. Porter and her daughter. Lavender Lane
lavender farm and Caroline’s Quilt Shop offer
unique shopping experiences. More Farm to
Fork locations such as Mirror Lake, DeCamp’s
Gardens, and Fox Trail Farms will greet you as
you make your way south to Albion. Chain
O’Lakes State Park welcomes over 260,000
visitors a year to its fantastic lakes, trails,
cabins and campgrounds. While in Albion visit
Black Pine Animal Sanctuary that provides a
home and care for rare and exotic animals for
the rest of their lives. And if you have your
own horse, then York Hills is the place for you.
This exceptional facility provides a variety of
trails and amenities for the experienced rider.

INDIANA’S LARGEST MONOPOLY GAME:
The historic courthouse of Noble County
sees thousands of visitors every year
conducting business in its halls, but for one
day a year the courthouse square is
transformed to Indiana’s largest game board. It
is a sight to behold as teams from across
northeast Indiana make their own life size

Curious about where that food comes
from that we all enjoy eating so much? The
Noble County Visitors Bureau has teamed
with our great agricultural
producers to take you on
a journey to tell the story of
food. You will learn how
it is made, and even
get a taste if you would

raised right here in Noble County.
Pick your own strawberries and blueberries near Wawaka. Enjoy a farmer's market in

FARM TO FORK
McCreery of Lavender Lane in Rome City
is growing lavender to soothe your palette.
Stop by Orchard Hill Farms just outside
Kendallville for fresh picked apples, or
shop their market store for locally produced
honey, apple butter and more. With over
10,000 apple trees, this family-owned and
operated farm is the single biggest apple
producer in Noble County.
The DeCamps still raise produce the old
fashioned way at their garden outside
Albion, and Fashion Farm in Ligonier
transforms into Pumpkin Fantasyland every
October. This family operation is home to
Pumpkin Charley, and one visit during this
magical time of year will tell you why.
The new Country Heritage Winery and
Vineyard in LaOtto adds to northern
Indiana's growing list of wine makers and
producers, and our rich diversity that is
Noble County farms.
Group tours are now available to educate
visitors on the products and processes of the
producers. Get a behind the scenes experience of the preparation and production of
locally grown food and products. Prearranged groups can opt for a special treat
with a homecooked Farm Feast made from
Noble County products at a unique location.
Farm to Fork season is now open.

BLACK PINE ANIMAL SANCTUARY in Albion
currently houses more than 85 exotic
displaced/abused "pets" and retired circus
performers. Visitors will see Bengal tigers,
leopards, the only chimpanzee in Indiana, birds,
reptiles, and more representing over 50 species.
Many of the animal residents that have found
refuge at Black Pine are endangered. The
opportunity for people to learn how animals
like these may be easily obtained, often
illegally, is alone an educational experience that
pulls at the heart strings and raises awareness
for needed change.

Noble County is awash with over 100 natural
lakes. Many of these are accessible to the
public, and can be enjoyed for fishing, boating,
canoeing, and swimming. Bixler Lake Park

offers fishing piers, supervised beach,
playgrounds, nature trails, birdwatching, and
much more.º
Canoeing and Kayaking
Roll down the ELKHART RIVER in a canoe or
kayak, take a boat ride at Chain O' Lakes State,
or the historic waters of SYLVAN LAKE at Rome
City. Both the north and south branches of the
Elkhart River afford the canoe and kayak
enthusiast a relatively leisurely paddle through
flat, low ground of glacial outwash sediments.
The flow of the South Branch is perennial,
although slow, and the channel will vary in
depth. Some portage may be required. For

THE TOMBSTONE TRAIL
The Nation’s
First Historic
Cemetery Trail
Historic cemeteries were
truly there for public parks in
America. They were often
designed to welcome visitors'
to explore their grounds
surrounded by peace, quiet,
and nature. Graveyards are
full of beautiful examples
of the art and craftsmanship
found in the many unusual and
varied monument styles and
materials used to create them.
Along the trail you will learn of
people who will make you laugh,
cry, and walk away with a
newfound respect for their lives
and contributions not only to
Indiana, but to the world.
This is a road trip like no other
featuring over eight historic
cemeteries across several northern
Indiana counties and communities.
More than 100 new and facinating
stories spanning the centuries and
miles will be found along the Grand
Army of the Republic Highway (U.S.
6).
For some a graveyard may seem
like the end of the road, but in
northeastern Indiana it is just the
beginning of a months-long celebration
of the lives of those who have gone
before us.
Guided, group, and self-guided
tours through these silent cities of
stone are available. For more information contact the Noble County Visitors
Bureau at 1-877-202-5761, or vist our
website at www.tombstonetrail.com.

70% of Lightning Fatalities occur June through August
Take extra care when enjoying
water recreation if weather turns
threatening. If you hear thunder,
lightning is close enough to pose
an immediate threat. That is why
the National Weather Service
advises: “ When Thunder Roars,
Go Indoors!”
Lightning can strike up to ten
miles away from rain, even if you
don’t see clouds.

CHAIN O’ LAKES
PHOTO CONTRIBUTED
The crown jewel of Noble County
Eight connecting glacier-carved kettle
lakes, forming a “chain of lakes,” along with
spectacular wooded scenery make Noble
County's Chain O’ Lakes State Park a haven
for outdoor recreation enthusiasts. The park
is only about a mile wide and just four miles
long but encompasses 2,718 acres, including
212 surface acres of water. More than 7
miles of widely varying shoreline is one of
the unique features of this beautiful park.
There are a total of 11 lakes within the park.
This area, once inhabited by Miami Indians
and more recently by settlements of pioneers,
is now available to all of us to enjoy!
With on-site boat rental, old salts and
want-to-be-mariners can paddle connecting
lakes and explore peaceful back waters. The
park is a small-boater's fishing paradise with
launch ramps and offers a fishing pier as
well. More than 10 miles of easy and
moderate hiking trails meander throughout
the park. The 1915 restored schoolhouse
nature center offers seasonal interpretive
services and programs. Camping options
range from primitive tent camping to
electricity for RV's. Tree-sheltered family
cabins overlooking the lakes are a great
option for park lovers who prefer a bunk and
a woodstove. Bird-watchers will find Chain
O’ Lakes to be one of the best locations in
the county, as will nature photographers.
Whatever it is that draws you to Chain O’
Lakes, we're sure that you'll want to return
again and again... and we welcome you!
