Our involvement in the ‘Let’s Get Moving!’ performance was a great way to bring everyone together at the start of the new school year. I thought the kids did a fabulous job learning their routines in such a short period of time. As for the teachers, well, at least I can say they had lots of energy and thoroughly enjoyed their performance. My absence from the performance was due to a back injury, not a case of stage fright! Keeping in touch Throughout the year there will be times when you need to contact your child’s teacher, Mr Parkes or myself. We encourage open discussions at all times and would suggest that any matter, major or minor, is best dealt with sooner rather than later. If there is something you are concerned about, unsure of or puzzled by regarding your child we would encourage you to make an appointment with your child’s teacher. While it may be convenient to catch a teacher before or after the school day this is certainly not the most appropriate time to have an in-depth discussion about your child. So how do you do this? Drop a note or email to the school, which will be forwarded to the class teacher asking them to contact you; alternatively, you can email the classroom teacher directly. School Council Elections 2016 The Annual General Meeting for Spring Gully Primary School will be held on Monday, 21st March at 7.30pm followed by a School Council General Meeting. Spring Gully Primary School has four Parent Member vacancies and one DET Employee Member vacancy. The vacancies are for a two year term. The current School Council members are as follows: Parent Members: Retiring at this election – Mr Jesse Gardner, Ms Teresa Biddell, Mr Mark Boyd and Ms Rachael Sanders. Ending in March 2017 – Mrs Sharmila Cantwell, Mrs Giovanna Kerwin, Mrs Fiona Martin and Mrs Trinity Sanderson DET members: Retiring at this election – Mrs Diana Devlin Ending in March 2017 – Mrs Siobhan Garmey and Mr Mark Stevens Executive Officer: Mr. Francis Trezise I would like to thank our ‘retiring’ school councilmembers for their significant and important contributions to the school community. Retiring school councillors are able to renominate for School Council if they still meet the eligibility requirements. What is a school council and what does it do? All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally formed bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within centrally provided guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students. Who is on the school council? There are three possible categories of membership: A mandated elected Parent category. More than one third of the total members must be from this category. Department of Education and Training (DET) employees can be Parent members at their child’s school as long as they are not employed at the school. A mandated elected DET employee category. Members of this category may make up no more than one third of the total membership of school council. The principal of the school is automatically one of these members. An optional Community member category. Its members are co-opted by a decision of the council because of their special skills, interests or experiences. DET employees are not eligible to be Community members. The term of office for all members is two years. Half the members must retire each year, creating vacancies for the annual school council elections. Spring Gully Primary School, 104-110 Spring Gully Road, Bendigo, 3550. PO Box 310, Strathdale, 3550 Phone: 54437230 Fax: 54415584 Email: spring.gully.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au Absence Phone No. 0427840915 (SMS only) Website: www.sgps.vic.edu.au Why is parent membership so important? Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of the school. Those parents who become active on a school council find their involvement satisfying in itself and may also find that their children feel a greater sense of belonging. How can you become involved? The most obvious way is to vote in the elections, which are held in Term 1 each year. However, ballots are only held if more people nominate as candidates than there are positions vacant. In view of this, you might seriously consider standing for election as a member of the school council encouraging another person to stand for election. Do I need special experience to be on school council? No. What you do need is an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school’s future. What do you need to do to stand for election? The principal will issue a notice and call for nominations following the commencement of Term 1 each year. All school council elections must be completed by the end of March. If you decide to stand for election, you can arrange for someone to nominate you as a candidate or you can nominate yourself in the Parent category. There is also a self-nomination category. DET employees whose child is enrolled in a school in which they are not employed are eligible to nominate as parents for the school council where their child is enrolled. Once the nomination form is completed, return it to the principal within the time stated on the notice of election. You will receive a Nomination Form Receipt following the receipt of your completed nomination. If there are more nominations received than there are vacancies on council, a ballot will be conducted during the two weeks after the call for nominations has closed. Remember Ask at the school for help if you would like to stand for election and are not sure what to do Consider standing for election to council this year Be sure to vote in the elections. Please contact Mr. Francis Trezise for further information. An eSmart school is a school where the smart, safe and responsible use of information and communications technology is a cultural norm. Students, teachers and the wider school community are equipped to embrace the best these technologies can offer, while being savvy about the pitfalls. For more information about eSmart schools visit www.amf.org.au Technology in the Home In the newsletter each week this term there will be information for families about technology in the home and ‘cybersafety’ for children. We are living in an age where technology is a huge part of all of our lives – this applies to our kids too! It’s important that parents are as informed as possible so that they can have conversations with their children and support them as they engage online. The newsletter articles will come from three main sources which are highly reputable; eSmart, Common Sense Media and eSafe (the Australian Government Site). www.amf.org.au www.commonsensemedia.org www.esafety.gov.au This week’s topic: How Much Screen Time is OK for my Kid(s)? Setting screen-time limits -- and helping kids moderate their own habits -- are all about finding the right balance for your family's needs and lifestyle. Kids are spending more time with screen media -- and at younger ages -- than ever before. But there really is no magic number that's "just right." What's more important is the quality of kids' media and how it fits into their -- and your family's -- lifestyle. Pay attention to how your kids act during and after watching TV, playing video games, or hanging out online. If they're using high-quality, age-appropriate media; their behavior is positive; and their screentime activities are balanced with plenty of healthy screen-free ones, there's no need to worry. If you're concerned about heavy media use, consider creating a schedule that works for your family. This can include weekly screen-time limits, limits on the kinds of screens they can use and guidelines on the types of activities they can do or programs they can watch. Make sure to get your kids' input as well so the plan teaches media literacy and self-regulation and use this as an opportunity to discover what they like watching, introduce new shows and apps for them to try, or schedule a family movie night. - Common Sense Media Head Lice Schools have ongoing issues with head lice. Anyone can get head lice. People get head lice from direct hair to hair contact with another person who has head lice. I have provided some important information attached to the newsletter for the treatment and control of head lice. This information includes finding head lice, treating head lice, the life cycle of head lice, regulations and prevention. I encourage all parents to read this information, and to regularly check your child’s head. http://docs.health.vic.gov.au/docs/doc/088E58959DDC091ACA2579B800202AFA/$FILE/headlicepam.pdf Medical information In order to provide a safe and secure school environment, it is very important for you, as parents or guardians, to inform the school of any medical issues relating to your child, or children, that you feel we should know about. Thank you to those who have already done so. If there are any changes, or new medical conditions arise throughout the year, the school should be informed. If your child suffers from asthma, we do require an up to date Asthma Plan specific to your child. If you think it necessary, relevant asthma medication can be kept in our security room in a labelled container. If your child carries their Asthma medication with them each day, their classroom teacher needs to be informed. If your child suffers from any allergies we do require specific information and action as required. All Anaphylactic students need to provide an up to date Anaphylaxis Action Plan and relevant medication to be kept at school. All staff are trained in the use of EpiPens each semester. Help Wanted – Sick Bay Linen Laundering We would like to have a roster of parent volunteers who will take responsibility for laundering the linen from the sick bay. This will involve collecting the linen from the sick bay on Friday afternoon, laundering it over the weekend and then remaking the sick bay bed on Monday morning. With enough volunteers this will require you being prepared to launder the linen perhaps once per term. If you are able to assist, please fill in the slip on today’s newsletter and return it to the office. Last year we had many volunteers enabling each volunteer parent to be on two or three times for the year. It would be great if we had a similar response in 2016. Administration News Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) Families holding a valid means-tested concession card or temporary foster parents are eligible to apply. $125 per year is paid for eligible primary school students. Specialist Staff Information PE / Sport News Early Morning Swimming During the first term of the school year, Spring Gully Primary School will conduct an Early Morning Swimming Program for students from Grades Three to Six. Students will participate every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 7:45am to 8:15am at the East Bendigo Swimming Pool. The cost of the program will be $2 for children without a season ticket. Children with a season ticket will be free of charge. Parents are responsible for transporting their children to and from this activity. The focus of the program will be to improve fitness, stroke development and general participation in swimming. This is particularly beneficial for those preparing for our swimming sports and for those wishing to be selected to represent SGPS at the Bendigo School’s Swimming Carnival. Children will participate in lap swimming and parents are encouraged to join in. If your child is not a confident swimmer and cannot swim across the pool with ease, parental supervision is compulsory. Spring Gully Primary School, 104-110 Spring Gully Road, Bendigo, 3550. The Sports will be held at Bendigo East Swimming pool from approximately 12pm to 3pm. A bus has been organised to transport the students. They will participate in their age group in a number of timed or untimed swimming races, varying in lengths (depending on the child’s competency level). Fun and participation will be the main focus of the day and students do not need to be confident swimmers, nor display correct stroke technique to take part. They will be able to choose the races that they would like to go in. Novelty games in the small shallow pool will be organised for less confident swimmers to allow for maximum student participation. House points will be awarded for each event your child participates in, including novelty games. Winning students of the timed, full length (50m) races may then be selected to represent the school at the upcoming Division Schools Carnival (depending on their time and correct stroke technique). Students will also have a ‘free swim’ if time permits. An information sheet has been sent home with all students. All return slips on this note need to be brought back to school as soon as possible.
