Reconciling extremes…
Le Grand-Bornand by the numbers
Winter season: from December 17, 2011 through April 22, 2012
In the Top French ski resorts, Le Grand-Bornand holds a special place.
240 year round residents
25 000 beds
1 four-star residence
3 three-star hotels
9 two-star hotels
80 shops
53 restaurants
Often imitated but never duplicated, the notion of a genuine resort-village has never been more clearly illustrated than here at the upper end of the Aravis Mountains. The saying that “choosing one thing means leaving behind another” does not seem to apply to Le Grand-Bornand, where astute choices have been made and nothing was left behind. And what splendor! Here, chalets from the 17th century rub shoulders with the latest detachable chairlift technology at the state of the art ski area. The freestyle culture here takes pride in the local agro-pastoral traditions, still alive today, and the local farms handed down from father to son for generations are neighbors to the most modern spas one can imagine. Many would have crashed and burned in attempting to mix tradition with modernity. Not Le Grand-Bornand, where the culture of paradox has been raised to an art form: the art of living in the mountains; differently, fully. Here the pensive will find escape in the well preserved mountain valleys, while those looking for excitement will take advantage of a full events schedule that has become a reference in the region. Look no further than next December 12th to 18th, where Le GrandBornand’s Sylvie Becaert international stadium will host the 1st ever Biathlon World Cup stage organized in France. In the heart of the village, this event will see the top athletes in the sport open the season with a bang.
Le Grand-Bornand never passes up on a good idea and everyone agrees. With a strong local identity, proud of its core values passed down through a long tradition… of innovation. 2

Natural or manmade, snow is guaranteed through the spring
Due to its ideal location Le Grand Bornand receives, on average, copious amounts of natural snow every winter. Nevertheless, the resort has chosen to be proactive with regard to an increasing unpredictable and warming climat by building two reservoirs at altitude to provide the ski area’s 146 snow cannons with ample amounts of water for snowmaking. This high-tech system provides 90 ha and 22 km of ski runs with snow all season long, including the highly popular Envers run that, when skied from top to bottom, is the longest descent of the ski area with 1100 m vertical drop. Ski all the way down to Le Grand-Bornand Village (elevation 1000 m) through the end of the season.
Snow all season long Offer valid from January 7-21, and form March 24-31.

The chalets of historical Chinaillon: a voyage through time
Le Grand-Bornand represents one of the few mountain villages that has succeeded in preserving its architectural customs, with more than 400 traditional chalets throughout the village, the oldest built in 1664. Undeniable jewels of the local heritage, they are easily recognizable by the “pointe d’âne”, a room that maintains the roof’s structural integrity, the “solaret”, a type of balcony that encircles the entire chalet, and the “tavaillons” – traditional wood shingles – covered roof. The slight detour to visit historical Chinaillon’s village center, huddled around the chapel, is all one needs to appreciate the quality of the local carpentry, and its ability to withstand the sands of time. Take note: subsidies and local ordinances have guaranteed, for over thirty years, the use of traditional materials for renovating or even building a new chalet; ensuring architectural excellence throughout the village.

Contemporary art you should “cow-nt” on seeing
It’s pretty common to hear people say that there are more cows in Le Grand Bornand than people. In order to honor such an important component of the local economy, a one of a kind cow-art exhibit (“Parcours de l’Art Vache”) provides the general public with the opportunity to appreciate a variety of works of art – paintings and sculptures – by internationally renowned artists who call Le Grand-Bornand their home. This genuine outdoor art gallery provides a new and off-beat look at Le Grand Bornand’s ruminant “star”.

Starting at 147.50 €/person per week, including apartment-style lodging, a 6 day alpine lift pass + an introduction to Snowball… as well as a 20% to 40% discount on ski equipment rentals and ski lessons.
In order to provide skiers with high-quality snow all season long as well as guarantee being able to ski all the way down to Le Grand Bornand Village (elevation 1000 m), the lift company recently invested 1 million Euros to renovate and reseal the Cour Lake reservoir, one of the two reservoirs at altitude that provide water for snowmaking. This investment will significantly improve the efficiency of the ski area’s snowmaking system.
Ecotourism: obtaining ISO 14001 certification
Already certified ISO 9001 V 2000, Le Grand Bornand’s lift company continues to pursue an environmentally friendly policy by working towards obtaining ISO 14001 certification. Three years in the making, the ski area will undergo the final certification audit in January 2012. Major measures of this ambitious undertaking to achieve environmental excellence include the use of biodiesel EN 590 instead of fuel oil for the entire fleet of groomers, or the use of reusable plastic cups for all of the major events on the winter calendar.
