Be sure to mark your calendars for May 31-June 5. Our next big stop is with our friends at the ITC in Delray Beach. I have one word to say about this event -“brilliant.” These guys are hosting the Grand Champions in conjunction with the ATP players. While you’re watching the qualifying and first rounds of the ITC, check out the grand champion’s tournament - it’s going on the exact same time. USPTA Florida division professionals are very involved in putting on a big junior clinic coordinated by Michal Baldwin; an adult clinic by CW Lewis; and a grand prix doubles and mixed doubles tournament with the help of Jeff Cohen and Terry See. In addition, thanks to our friends the USTA, we will also be introducing QuickStart tennis with their help when Mike is doing the junior clinic. Then, following all this activity in March, is another grand prix stop at BallenIsles with Trish Faulkner as our host and now with our new pro back on the east coast, Frank Swope! Last December was quite a month with the Florida board and most of our district presidents attending the USTA Florida Section Annual Meeting where I was lucky enough to see history in the making. I was also lucky enough to pass our USPTA USTA Service award to Donn Davis, who was instrumental in bringing us together. Donn, I thank you and your whole team for the invitation. I was very proud of our own USPTA board member Dave Richardson, as USPTA/USTA board liaison, for taking an active role in helping to organize our program and also for bringing our associations closer together. The weekend was a great opportunity for USPTA Florida division, PTR and USTA Florida to share ideas. Working together, we share one common goal - grow this game. After all, it’s what we do. In order to teach it, we have to grow it! In my eyes, this may have been one of the most important meetings ever. It showed that if we work together, we can grow more tennis players. With formats like QuickStart, it will make us all busier on the court - this is a no brainer. For all you USPTA junior grand prix directors, I challenge you to add the 8-and-under and 10-and-under formats to your programs. The more tennis players we get into the game means more jobs for our USPTA members and that has to be a priority. It’s important we all understand this. One of my goals as your president it to do whatever it takes to create more jobs for our members and right now I can’t think of a better way. Please understand the USTA Florida Section is willing to help and support you if you’re attempting to bring QuickStart to your facility. All you have to do is pick up the phone and call them. At Boca Grove, we just ran an event with a beach tennis tournament and next to that ran a QuickStart tournament. Using the three nets we purchased from HEAD and only taking up one court, we transitioned into a full court tournament. This was planned to be a 90-minute program which turned into a four-hour event. It was supposed to be for the kids, but we couldn’t get the parents off the QuickStart courts! We also now have QuickStart junior clinics going on weekly and flowing from that, private QuickStart lessons. My assistants are picking up additional income they would have never had this season. This format is how you keep kids in the game! You’ve heard me say this before and I’m saying it again because USPTA national is always updating. I encourage all you to continue to take full advantage of the Information Technology section the USPTA has to offer. They keep adding the newest and latest updates of our ever evolving game of tennis - stay informed! If you have any questions regarding what the USPTA has to offer, please don’t be shy about picking up the phone and calling the World Headquarters, as I can assure you it is a friendly group willing to help in any way. Another suggestion - one night, take an hour or two to go on the USPTA website and you will see how they have made this easy for us. Just click the big red USPTA tennis Technology Tools and you’ll see things like Coaches Resource Center, Tennis Resource Center and Tennis for the health of it. Also look at Courtside, even if you think you can’t use their whole program, think about using a small part – it’s free. Again, don’t be shy. Pick up the phone and you can ask questions either to them directly or call National; no question is too small. This should be the phone season. This is your division. Get more involved. The tools are all there for you to be successful if you take advantage of what’s at your finger tips - whether it’s QuickStart, technology or other resources. What are your goals? Start by making phone calls. Go on, you can do it! Thank you to all contributors in this issue: Mike Baldwin, Ivan Baron, Richard Centerbar, Jeff Cohen, Barry Curley, Joe D’Aleo, Chuck Gill, Bob Heller, Glen Howe, John Joyce, Brad Leu, Robin Newman, Ben Rakusin, Terry See, Len Simard, Keith Soifer, Ron St. John, Jeff Timmer, Tom Turpie and Rick Vach. The 2011-2013 Board of Officers will be installed during the Florida division awards luncheon at Club Med Sandpiper Bay on June 4, 2011. USPTA District Presidents Brad Leu, USPTA Florida Vice President The Florida Division is proud of our District President’s program. It has led to many of our present and past board members. It gives many pros an opportunity to contribute to the organization as well as being a voice for the board. In an effort to give members a chance to become a District President and as well as measuring stick for our current DP’s, two years ago we placed term limits on the DP positions. The term coincides with our President Richard Centerbar’s term. That term is coming to an end at our convention in June. I would like to thank all of our present District Presidents for their service over the past two years. You have certainly accomplished a great deal and have added value to our organization. I hope that many of you will continue to serve and I encourage you apply again. For those members who are interested in serving, this is your opportunity to apply. The process works like this. The application time will be from Feb. 1 to March 31. Applications can be obtained through Brad Leu by e-mail at Sotennis@bellsouth.net . All present DP’s must reapply as well as any members who are seeking a position. If we have more than one applicant from a district, the board will decide the DP for that area. The District Presidents for the 2011-2013 terms will be announced in early May and their term will begin at our Convention in June. If you have questions or would like a copy of the guidelines, please contact Brad at the above e-mail address. AWARD NOMINATIONS FOR 2010-2011 It’s hard to believe that our USPTA Florida Division Convention is just around the corner and it is time to start putting in nominations for the following awards: USPTA Florida Division Pro of the Year USPTA Florida Division Facility Manager of the Year USPTA Florida Division High School Coach of the Year USPTA Florida Division College Coach of the Year USPTA Florida Division Touring Coach of the Year The award calendar year is from April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011. You may nominate someone or nominate yourself. It is imperative when summiting nominations that you include a detailed description of accomplishments in bullet point format or the person will not be considered for the award. The deadline for nominations is April 2, 2011. Please e-mail your nominations to both Robin S. Newman at sn99@aol.com and Pat Anderson at usptafl@aol.com Thank you in advance for being a part of this process. USPTA, PTR, USTA Florida Plan 2011 Joint Tennis Effort in Florida Rick Vach, www.ustaflorida.com A landmark meeting was held during the 61st USTA Florida Annual Meeting and Volunteer Weekend in December in Orlando, where executive members and teaching pros from the United States Professional Tennis Association-Florida (USPTA Florida), the Professional Tennis Registry-(PTR) and the USTA Florida Section came together to plan a strategy for further partnering to advance tennis in 2011. PTR National President Jean Mills, USPTA National President Tom Daglis, USPTA Florida Division President Richard Centerbar, USPTA Florida past president Dave Richardson, USTA Florida President Dan Casey, USTA Florida President-Elect Bob Pfaender, and USTA Florida Executive Director Doug Booth and Associate Executive Director Andy McFarland were some of the 100+ Florida tennis movers and shakers from across the state in attendance. Centerbar, who succeeded Richardson as USPTA Florida president, presented outgoing USTA Florida President Donn Davis with the 2010 USPTA Florida Service Award for working to bring the two organizations closer together. The USPTA’s Richardson joined the USTA Florida Board of Directors as a USPTA representative in 2010. “Seeing all of us in the same place at the same time and getting along so well, this felt historical,” said Centerbar following the meeting. “From the bottom of my heart I thank USTA Florida for putting on such a wonderful event, making everyone feel so welcome, and putting USTA, USPTA, and PTR in the same room to discuss how we can accomplish great things by working together.” Mills, the current PTR national president, is also a former USTA Florida president and the director of tennis at The Polo Club in Boca Raton. “I know our tennis team of USTA, USPTA, and PTR can and will achieve significant successes working for the future of our game,” Mills said. “A special thanks to Doug Booth and Richard Centerbar for our dinner many months ago that inspired this historical get together which is a wonderful start.” Part of USTA Florida’s initiative to increase business for teaching pros in Florida is the distribution of 10-andUnder Tennis play format equipment through its “Share the Love” campaign. Share the Love is USTA Florida’s $500,000 initiative on top of the organization’s regular annual giving to promote a wide range of community tennis initiatives during difficult economic times for public and private tennis facilities and schools. The new 10-and-Under Tennis initiative is not only an easy and fun way for small children to learn tennis, but allows for more kids on a practice court, translating into higher revenue for clubs, coaches and teaching pros. Many programs are currently using six 36-foot courts positioned sideways on one 78-foot court, with six kids per court. With up to 36 kids on one practice court, that can mean higher revenue for court time per hour, with kids constantly in action and no more standing in lines. In addition, over the next three years, USTA National plans to invest $5 million in 100 U.S. markets to foster the growth of 10-and-Under Tennis. “I sense a real change in the tennis culture taking place, and I believe tennis will reach new heights in the short years to come,” said Tom Daglis, the current USPTA national president and director of tennis, fitness and aquatics at the Lakewood Country Club in Rockville, Maryland. The USPTA’s Richardson says he was inspired by both the USTA Florida Board of Directors meeting and the USPTA-PTR-USTA meeting during the weekend, and the implications for 2011. “I hope everyone left just charged up on how we can ignite this new tennis relationship boom and grow this game to extraordinary heights. When all three organizations do something, the impact on Florida tennis and people’s lives will be life changing.” Booth, along with the outgoing USTA Florida President Donn Davis, made it a personal goal to bring the three key Florida tennis organizations together, with Booth traveling the state in 2010 to speak at eight teaching professional meetings, from Destin to Key Largo. “I know we can do some special things in Florida, working together better than ever going forward, and that is what really motivates me,” said Booth, who has held the USTA Florida executive director position since 1990. “We all have such a great love for our sport, and I know some great things are going to happen.” FLORIDA Richard Centerbar presents USPTA/USTA Service Award to Donn Davis USTA Florida President-Elect Bob Pfaender addresses the assembly of teaching pros and tennis industry attendees Harry Gilbert, Tom Daglis, Tim Beyer, Bob Pfaender and Brad Leu Lynne Salus and Merit Award honoree Gary Heatwole New Committees Florida Division board members and some district presidents recently attended the USTA/FL Annual Meeting in Orlando at the beginning of December. Our partnership with the USTA is a critical step in growing the game of tennis in the future. This means good things for everyone involved, from more players to more lessons to better jobs. We need to look at our industry as a whole not just your club members or clientele. The USTA/FL is taking this approach and the USPTA/FL is ready to be a productive partner in this endeavor. One aspect that came out of our weekend was the need for our voice to be heard by the USTA and in turn for us to listen to them. Doug Booth is amazing, but it is not possible for him to talk to each of us individually, (although I think he is trying) about our concerns and ideas. The Board has decided to form committees that mirror the USTA/FL committees to allow our members an opportunity to sit in with the various USTA/FL committees and exchange ideas and opinions to help grow the game. We are fortunate that we meet together a couple of times a year and can sit down face to face. We are seeking members that would like to serve on one of the three committees. We are looking for members that have an interest and experience in the different areas. In addition, we ask that you are constructive in your approach; we are looking for problem solvers not complainers. The three committees are 1. Non-competitive juniors: This is mainly involved with Junior team tennis and how to grow the market for the average junior. Michelle Willis will be the contact from the USTA/FL. 2. Competitive Tennis: Junior and Adult tournaments are the focus of this committee. Andy Gladstone and Ann Brown will be the contact on the USTA/FL side. 3. Leagues: Adult Leagues is the focus of this committee. Sandy Marshall is the USTA/FL chairperson. One of the requirements is that you must attend the USPTA/FL convention in June. Times will be set aside for these committees to meet as part of the convention agenda. We are seeking three to five members for each committee. You may ask to be on the committee by e-mailing Brad Leu at Sotennis@bellsouth.net . A chairperson will be assigned to each committee and the members will be announced prior to the division convention. For division members going north for the summer, or not on the committee but with concerns or opinions, the chairperson will be your voice and our voice as representatives of the USPTA/FL. I encourage you to e-mail or call that person prior to the division convention. We are looking forward to this partnership moving forward and we feel that this is a great step in both organizations reaching a common goal. Florida Professionals Power-up at USPTA World Conference The USPTA World Conference was once again an awesome experience. The event was held September 27 to October 2 at the LaQunita Resort and Spa in LaQuinta, Calif. It is by far one of the best places to hold a convention. The weather was perfect, the amenities were extraordinary and the convention was well organized and informative as usual. Florida had a large contingency of professionals travel to Palm Springs. The division was well representted by Pat Anderson, Paulo Barros, Alexi Beggs, Viktoria Beggs, Nicole Berger, Joe Biedenharn, Michael Birzon, Nick Bollettieri, Christie Bradley, Rick Calton, Richard Centerbar, Robb Chamberlain, Holly Chomyn, Jeff Cohen, Dave Cordrey, Joe Csandli, Emile DeCuba, Steve Ethier, Jamie Feagan, Harry Gilbert, Chuck Gill, Bill Gist, Patti Heidorn, Alex Hermeto, Paul Hope, Glen Howe, John Joyce, Chris Kader, Jared Kalpin, Robin Keener, Mark Kovacs, Michele Krause, Kamil Kuchta, Richard Lamb, Brad Leu, Jim Loehr, Brian Lutz, Rick Macci, Tony Martin, Franco Mata, Jim Morton, Robin Newman, Joseph Obidiegwu, Jim Oescher, Vimal Patel, Gerry Perry, Kurt Pessa, Mike Puc, Denny Rager, Jim Rich, Todd Ruedisili, Paula Scheb, Terry See, Patrik Segfeldt, Tyler Shelly, Stephen Shreiner, Carlos Triana, Thomas Whitten and Julian Wortelboer. The list of speakers included Joy Macci, Nick Bollettieri, Tom Gorman, Jack Groppel and Rick Macci to name a few. The tennis buying show was the largest ever with many new vendors. Meeting new people, sharing ideas with pros from all over the world is a great way to broaden your view of the tennis industry and rejuvenate you in your profession. Florida Division Welcomes New Members SPORTS SCIENCE FORUM Yoga and Tennis Dr. Robert Heller, USPTA Boca Raton, Fla. Yoga, the ancient Indian practice of philosophy, meditation and stretching, has shed its association with mysticism, hippies and new age fads and hit the main stream stage big time. Yoga classes of all kinds are popular in health clubs, town recreational centers and yoga studios across the country. More recently, yoga has found its way into the tennis world and presentations on the subject have included the National Tennis Teacher’s Conference in New York and the USPTA National Convention. The tennis channel also features a program on the topic. The Oaks at Boca Raton, November 14, 2010 Danny Brinda, Kristen Harris, Brad Myers, Fredrik As tennis teachers, we want our students to acquire body Nyborg, Barry Rosenberg, Danielle Simone, and Cesar awareness, balance, flexibility, relaxation, concentration, Yanez. Testers are Kyle LaCroix, Jason Gilbert and Ben and core strength. The acquisition of these skills will likely Rakusin. improve performance and reduce injuries. These are all components of what is taught and learned through Yoga. I have been practicing yoga for several years now and have experienced many of these benefits personally. In fact, through informal discussions with a number of my USPTA colleagues, I found quite a few who practice yoga regularly. Another reason for recommending yoga to your members and students is self serving; if flexibility and strength reduce injuries, then there are more members available to take lessons from you and participate in the activities you offer. Tuscawilla Country Club - November 7, 2010 Some clubs and facilities might even be co-sponsoring a program which could provide an additional revenue stream. There are a number of qualified yoga instructors who could provide instruction on-site and increase the ease and convenience for your members to participate. If you have had experience with Yoga and tennis either personally or in offering it at your facility, please feel free to share your comments with me at info@robertheller.net. That’s it for now. Become a fan of USPTA Florida Division www.facebook.com/USPTAFlorida USPTA announces new member credential Courtside USA is the official network of the USPTA The United States Professional Tennis Association has announced the launch of its Accredited Professional Coach classification, a new membership classification that includes mandatory education. The new classification became effective January 1, 2011. Courtside USA and the United States Professional Tennis Association have joined forces to give USPTA tennis-teaching professionals state-of-the-art tools to run their tennis programs online. Courtside USA provides tennis teachers and clubs access to a free website to build their business and connect with their members/players from one central location. -- New Accredited Professional Coach classification includes mandatory continuing education -- It is open to Professional 1, 2 and 3 members and Master Professionals. USPTA Professional members are required to take continuing education in order to earn and maintain APC status. The benefits of APC designation include opportunities for career enhancement through a commitment to tennis and tennis education and demonstration of expertise, and building the image of tennis-teaching professionals and tennis as a profession overall. The APC is earned by accumulating 20 APC continuing education credits within a two-year period. The designation is maintained by continuing to earn 20 APC credits over every two-year period. APC credits can be earned in a variety of ways including attending the USPTA World Conference, USPTA division conventions, USPTA specialty courses, USTA High Performance education, viewing DVD seminars, and more. Typically, two hours of qualifying education will constitute one CEU. The opportunity to earn credits at USPTA World Conferences and division conventions will require members to fill out a form for credit at the beginning of the seminar or specialty course (that is collected at the end of the seminar), in order to verify attendance for credit. For more details regarding qualifying credits, e-mail education@uspta.org. Once members achieve this distinction, they will be issued a special certificate with an expiration date and the designation will be added after their professional rating. The certificate will be available online to print from the member management area of www.uspta.com, where members can log in with name and member number. While the APC classification did not become effective until January of this year, those members who attended specialty courses at the World Conference in September and completed the forms for credit will have those credits count toward the APC classification. To earn this new membership classification, in addition to being certified at the USPTA professional level, members must also take the Professional Tennis Coaches Academy I and pass a competency exam at the 80th percentile or higher. Those who have already taken the PTCA I and scored 80 percent or higher do not need to retake it. --Courtside provides online tools for all USPTA teaching professionals-- The site gives teaching professionals the technology they need to run leagues, ladders, tournaments, flex leagues and round robins. In addition, they can manage lesson bookings, court bookings and events, all from the convenience of their computer. Courtside USA also provides players with a free web page with interactive social networking capabilities, where they have the opportunity to organize their matches and connect with other players. They can also register for leagues, events and programs at their local club or in the community from their web page. To find out more about Courtside USA, visit www. courtsideusa.com. We had 36 players, all members, that came together to support such a great cause. Entry into the event was one unwrapped gift per person for a little boy or girl. A total of 84 toys were collected between this event and members bringing toys to the club. The range of types of toys has been fantastic for both boys and girls from small items for a 3 yr old to bikes for the older age groups. It was a great day for TOPS’L, with perfect weather for tennis to support a much needed charity in our local community. One of my members Kay Fleshman called me weeks ago and together we thought this was a great way to give back to the local families in this time of need. As we all know with the economy not being the greatest and then the oil spill there are lots of families in our area hurting this year more than ever and I am proud of how the TOPS’L members rallied together for such a worthy cause. As always it was a team effort and I want to thank everyone for participating and hopefully we can touch the hearts of many kids in our area that would have gone without any presents this year. Additional charitable activities included a donation of old tennis balls to a K-9 unit in Iraq for the military and a contribution of $3,000 to the Sandestin Lions Club through the Helen Drake Invitational Tournament. Naples - District 12 - Ron St. John A Tennis pro-am Calcutta was put on by Allen Systems Group in Naples, Florida on December 10-11. Approximately 35 kids moved from station to station, in costume, participating in age appropriate tennis activities directed by Barry’s staff and other volunteers. Dede Allen did an excellent job of setting up the stations designed to hold the children’s attention while focusing on simple QuickStart drills as well as providing easy instructions to the adult court helpers. Amanda assisted with the set up on court with the “pirates, princesses and astronauts”; Greg (TPC from Tallahassee) joined in the activities. All of the children participated in a “grand finale relay”. QuickStart Tennis Parent Guides were distributed to the adults together with Marsh Landing’s new After School Junior Tennis Program schedule, began on November 2nd, featuring QuickStart for Tots & Munchkins ages 4-7 and Juniors ages 8-12. Parents were both fascinated and astonished at how quickly the youngest of players achieved an appropriate level of success...proof being how long they remained on court! USPTA show, “Footwork Solutions – Moving Backward & Forward,” premieres on Tennis Channel “On Court with USPTA” is the cable TV show produced by the United States Professional Tennis Association. In the episode which premiered on Feb. 1, USPTA Master Professional Lorenzo Beltrame focuses on moving backward and forward from the baseline. Footwork is an extremely important part of tennis since a player’s feet and legs are instrumental in getting him to the ball and allowing him to recover for the next shot. Beltrame demonstrates scenarios of hitting backhands and forehands while moving backward. He then shows viewers how to move forward and take the ball off the bounce and also the more aggressive move of taking the ball out of the air. Beltrame has been involved in tennis all his life, first as a top junior, then as a professional player and ultimately as a coach. Throughout his coaching career, he has worked with dozens of ATP and WTA touring professionals, including Jim Courier and Pete Sampras. He has traveled extensively coaching players in major professional events including the four Grand Slams, Davis Cup, and Hopman Cup. Beltrame has served as director of tennis and director of athletic mental training at the Human Performance Institute Inc., in Orlando, Fla., since 1996. Prior to joining the Human Performance Institute he was responsible for developing programs at the Tennis Club Ambrosiano, one of the largest tennis clubs in Milan, Italy, and at two of the leading tennis academies in the United States. “On Court” is a half-hour instructional show featuring USPTA-certified professionals as guest instructors. The USPTA became the first tennis-teaching organization ever to produce and air an educational television series on playing and teaching tennis on the Tennis Channel in 2003. Since then, more than 65 shows have been produced that provide instruction about technique, strategy and other facets of the game. All production is done in-house, which includes everything from planning and scripting, to shooting and editing, to graphics and DVD duplication. All episodes of “On Court” are now in high-definition. All episodes of “On Court with USPTA” and more than 100 other USPTA-produced DVD titles are also available for purchase online at www. usprotennisshop.com.
