Where commitment, hard work and fun make a winning combination
“If the customers aren’t enjoying themselves while riding, then something is wrong,”
says Ryan Strand, Liberty Meadows Training Center, Raymore, Mo. “Our clients put a
lot of time, effort and resources into their horses; my job is to help them improve their
skills and reach their goals, yet have fun at the same time.”
It is a balancing act to be sure and one with a foundation of incredible commitment to
the care and individual needs of every horse in the barn. The ability of Ryan and the
rest of the Liberty Meadows team to meet the horses’ needs just got a little easier as
they moved to a brand new facility owned by Glen and Sharon True.
Just a mile from the farm’s previous location, the new Glass Horse Farm was designed
with the comfort of both horse and human in mind. The barn and accompanying
outbuildings sit atop 70 acres of gently rolling Missouri hills. Outside, coated cable fencing surrounds numerous turn-out
paddocks so the horses can enjoy some outdoor grazing time. Inside, the barn is heated to make it more comfortable
during the sometimes harsh Missouri winters. Other features include rubber mats in all the stalls, separate work area for
the vet and farrier, a round pen, indoor arena with dropped
ceiling and an air exchanger to provide ventilation. The new
barn also includes a comfortable customer lounge with a kitchen.

“We are really excited about the new facility,” says Ryan. “There are a lot of features that make it easier for us to work
horses, give lessons and show potential sale horses to buyers.” The customers are excited about it too. Says Reneé
Kramer, Red Tail Arabians, “It is one of nicest barns I’ve seen and is really comfortable and inviting - whether you are
taking a lesson, looking at sale horses or just visiting.”

While the commitment to quality has just become easier to achieve with the move to the new facility, the rest of the Liberty
Meadows’ success formula, hard work and enjoyment, have been the same since Ryan launched his training operation in
1999. Riding since childhood at the original Strands Arabians in Toddville, Iowa (started by his grandfather in 1958), Ryan
also worked with his uncle, Jody Strand, and Stan White Jr. His successes at the helm of Liberty Meadows came quickly
in his first year as both he and a client earned Canadian National Championship titles. Since then, the hard work has
continued to pay off.
While every trainer can work hard, it also takes some talent to achieve what Ryan has been able to in just over a decade.
He attributes many of his skills to his grandfather, Jody and Stan. “One of the most important things my family taught me
was to treat every horse individually. Just like people, every horse is different. They have different talents, learning styles
and work ethics. As a trainer, my job is to discover what works for that horse on that day. The process is what keeps
things interesting and fun. It is easy to be excited about going to work when each day presents different learning
opportunities - whether it is trying to teach a horse something new or trying to kick up the competitiveness of an amateur
rider,” he says.
With the care of the horses and work elements of the equation a given, what Ryan
also strives to achieve is making sure his riders have fun. “We do have a lot of fun,
both at the shows and at home,” says long-time client Linda Hackett. “Ryan does
a really good job of making sure we have productive lessons that help move us
forward in achieving our goals, but that we don’t take ourselves so seriously it
becomes a chore. I am constantly amazed by the exciting and positive environment
Ryan has been able to create in his barn. He is enthusiastic about what he does
and it’s contagious.”
Both Liberty Meadows clients and Ryan’s team are excited about the
upcoming months. After a several year hiatus from the Scottsdale Show,
they are planning to make the trip west in February 2011. “With the new
heated barn, we will be able to condition horses throughout the winter
months more effectively and add the Scottsdale Show to our calendar,”
he says. “We’re all looking forward to it.”
Ryan is also looking forward to another year of successful sales and marketing.
“We’ve sold quite a few horses this year and I think the market is starting
to pick up,” he says. “If you have good, quality horses there is a market for
them. I think we’ll continue to see sales increase in the coming year.”
In the meantime, Ryan and barn owners Glen and Sharon True invite visitors to the new facility. “Come and watch us work
horses or give lessons,” says Ryan. “We have really strived to create the right environment for the horses and amateur
riders and I think we’ve been successful at that. Everyone associated with Liberty Meadows is passionate about horses,
about riding and about winning. It is a great combination.”
