Bourg-En-Bresse is the prefecture of the Ain in the Rhône-Alpes region and the main city of
a conurbation of 15 communities* and 74 300 inhabitants.
Situated less than one hour from Lyon and the Beaujolais, an hour from Geneva (Switzerland),
one and a half from Annecy, and 30 minutes from southern Burgundy, Bourg-en-Bresse is
an easily-accessible destination thanks to two international airports (Lyon Saint-Exupery
and Geneva-Cointrin), to the motorways (A39, A40, A42) and the direct TGV for Paris
(2 hours) and Geneva (1 hour).
The city naturally presents itself as a place for an epicurean stay, a haven of peace,
culturally rich and central for visits to the eastern-centre of France.

Bresse PDO poultry, the only poultry in the world to hold this quality certificate, Bresse butter and
cream also have also obtained PDO in 2014 (protected Designation of Origin) status, or the parsley
and garlic frog’s legs from the Dombes : awaken your senses !
Several other typical regional dishes are worth a glance:
- Giraudet’s famous quenelles (dumplings)
Giraudet is the only maker of quenelles to maintain the spoon-moulding tradition
for part of its production. The company has a chef who creates new recipes for
fresh soups, sauces and quenelles every year. He shares some of his secrets at the
cookery lessons given at the headquarters in Bourg-en-Bresse or in shops in Lyon
and Paris. The company’s skill has been rewarded with the Entreprise du patrimoine
vivant (“Living heritage enterprise”).
- Bresse Blue cheese, made close to Bourg-en-Bresse, and its derivatives such as the “Bresson” – a
sausage made with Bresse Blue cheese PDO. Comté is the other honoured cheese of the region of
Bourg-en-Bresse, situated at the southern point of the “Comté trail”.
The Routes du Comté selected as a European Destination of Excellence in July
2015! In July 2015 the Routes du Comté network was awarded the Eden label,
which was established by the European Commission to promote development
models for sustainable tourism throughout the European Union.
The 2015 competition, organised by Atout France under the auspices of the
Direction Générale des Entreprises, focused on the theme of «tourism and
gastronomy».
Alongside the other prize-winners this year – with our Burgundy cousins from
Tournus and Tournugeois (winners of the first prize and the venue for the FrancoGourmandes festival, which is sponsored this year by… Comté!), Guillestre
(Queyras Regional Park) and Baie de Saint-Brieuc Paimpol - Les Caps (in Côtes
d’Armor) – the Routes du Comté are now one of only 26 French destinations to
have been awarded this prestigious label.
The Eden competition highlights the values, diversity and characteristics of European
tourist destinations that share a commitment to social, cultural and environmental
sustainability.
The 2015 EDEN competition acknowledged destinations that have developed
services for visitors based on local gastronomy. This involves recognition of culinary
expertise in one or more fields, for example, the creation of a gastronomic event or
circuit, a traditional market or the establishment of close collaboration between local
producers and restaurants… The EDEN destinations give visitors the chance to explore
local culture and traditions, and to enjoy unforgettable experiences thanks to the
diversity of their hidden treasures.
Bourg-en-Bresse is at the southern tip of the Route du Comté.
- Gaudrioles, biscuits which are sweet or savoury, crunchy or soft, and which are made of grilled
organic maize flour.
- Bressan tart, a tart with cream and sugar and its regional variation with pralines.
- CDO Wines from the Bugey (Controlled designation of origin) : white, red but also a sparkling rosé –
Cerdon – made according to a traditional method.
The breeders, producers and craftsmen of the catering trade perpetuate the Bressan gastronomic traditions
and play the ace of quality. Colourful and busy markets, some of which offer livestock for sale, are the best
illustration of this. Beautiful... and mouth-watering !

The producers’ and students’ shop gets bigger
The Sardières agricultural college in Bourg-en-Bresse has technological premises for
food processing at the disposal of the students, but also of producers from the region
who do not have their own facilities. A shop called Sardélices has been added to this
area, inside the college, but open to the public. It has recently been renovated and
extended, putting new products on sale, such as chicken mango curry (developed in
partnership with Artisans du Monde), raspberry coulis or extra-fruity jams made with 90g
of fruit for every 100g of jam.

Many gastronomic events perpetuate the epicurean delight throughout the year, from the legendary
Pig Festival to the unmissable Glorieuses de Bresse which celebrates the best of local poultry, and not
forgetting the Gastronomic Fair and the Market of PDO products.

a bit of history…
The history of the city goes back to the Neolithic period, but it’s the invasions that brought “Burgus”
into the history books : Druids erected more than 300 standing stones on a hill at the junction of two
rivers; the Reyssouze and the Cône. Later the Romans fortified the area as they considered it to be of
strategic importance in its position at the entrance of Lugdunum “Capital of the three Gauls”. In the
10th C the sovereigns of Bresse built a lordly dwelling and half a league away a village of farmers and
potters developed, where later the Romans built a temple in the place that then became a site for
the Catholic cult. Today known as Brou this area is internationally recignised for its royal monastery,
built in the 16th C by Marguerite d’Autriche in memory of her deceased husband Philibert II of Savoy.
On a crossroads and at a border, Bourg-en-Bresse built a citadel in the 16th C in increased its notoriety
thanks to commerce and the quality of its crafts. Buildings grew everywhere : convents, Notre Dame
church and rich merchant’s houses. In 1601 the treaty of Lyon attached the Bresse to the kingdom
of France. Expansion continued in the 18th and 19th centuries with mansions, a hospital and the
prefecture...
Today a city of industry (wire-mills, metallurgy and mechanical construction), green and gracious,
Bourg-en-Bresse is the heart of a conurbation of 15 communities.
From Marguerite d’Autriche to Gustave Doré, via the astronomer Jérôme Lalande, the doctor Xavier
Bichat, or the author and humanist Edgar Quinet, there are many women and men who made
the city what it is today. Several walking tours (independent, guided or animated) allow visitors to
discover the tales of the city’s history.
HERITAGE MUST-SEES
The Royal Monastery of Brou, a National Monument like the Mont Saint-Michel, Azay le Rideau
Castle or Cluny Abbey, is the symbolic site of Bourg-en-Bresse. It was also voted France’s
favourite Monument in September 2014 during a famous TV show. This church with a varnished
roof is ranked among the hundred most beautiful in France for its flamboyant Gothic façade
resembling stone lace, the three princes’ tombs and the finely carved altarpiece of the seven
joys of the Virgin. Its rood screen, which is among the few still visible in France, is now open to
visitors and provides enjoy a bird’s eye view of the choir and the tombs, and a chance to fully
enjoy the newly renovated stained glass windows. Besides opening the unusual rood screen
up to visitors (see above), the Prior’s apartments are also now part of the sightseeing circuit
and provide access to the museum in the upper gallery of the third cloister. Adjacent to the
church, three majestic cloisters and a museum of Fine Arts can also be visited. Major exhibitions
and many events, conferences, themed tours and activities for young visitors (archaeology
workshops, tours for children aged 2 and up, game booklet, etc.) are also in store for visitors.
The À la folie… pas du tout festival, launched in 2011, highlights the monument
in a very artistic way with readings, concerts, meetings and performances each
summer. Culture is accessible to all: the monument entrance fee includes access to
the concert or performance of the day, free of charge as part of this festival.
NEW
EVENT 2016. After successful testing in spring 2015, the monastery façade will again
be illuminated in summer 2016. The series of animated and colourful pictures recounts
the history of the site and the misfortunes of Margaret of Austria, as she loses her
much-loved husband Philibert the Handsome – a story of love and death that is at
the origin of the monument. The lightshow is the work of Gilbert Coudène, one of the
leading figures in the neighbouring Fête des Lumières (“Festival of Lights”) in Lyon.
Another place to visit: the apothecary of the Hôtel-Dieu, equipped with a rare laboratory still in
perfect condition and open to visits. The gooseneck and copper still are intact: the storeroom
contains many works on medicine and pharmacy, some dating from the 17th C. The dispensary
contains more than a thousand ceramic and glass jars of the period some of which still contain
their healing substances as bizarre as dragon’s blood, mercury or bear fat !
Surprising: the museum of tabulating machines contains more than 300 typewriters, calculators
and accounting machines, the ancestors of today’s computers and tablets ! A unique
collection in France, recently improved by a machine which dates from 1840. Ex-mechanics
work to keep these machines alive and help to understand these nearly-forgotten objects.
The old quarters of Bourg-en-Bresse invite discoveries ; medieval timber-frame houses, elegant
stone facades embellished with wrought iron balconies, mansions, Celtic remains, the gothic
porch of the old Dominican convent or the co-cathedral Notre Dame and its legend of the
black virgin. The parks, gardens and fountains which accompany the visitor are a reminder
that Bourg-en-Bresse is a resolutely green city, forever looking to the surrounding nature.
In 2014, the City wanted to join the Cathedral Cities Network, like Albi,
Beauvais, Chartres or Rouen, to reaffirm the importance of the Co-Cathedral of
Notre-Dame in the heritage and tourism landscape of Bourg-en-Bresse. This architectural
masterpiece, which is visited each year by many tourists, is part of the city’s cultural and touristic
appeal.
The
construction
of
the
Collegiate
Co-Cathedral
of
Notre-Dame
(named
co-cathedral as it was the secondary seat of the Bishopric) began in 1505 on the site of an old
Romanesque chapel of pilgrimage, and was not completed until 1696. The bell tower, whose
top was removed during the Reign of Terror, was rebuilt in reinforced concrete between 1911
and 1913 by Tony Ferret, an architect who worked extensively in the city. In 1982, a facelift
allowed it to regain its former glory with Ramasse white stone from Revermont. The roof was
renovated in 1986 and underfloor heating was installed in 2006.
Inside: the statue of the Black Madonna, nestled in a 19th-century neo-Gothic altar, is a reminder
of the importance of Marian devotion since the 13th century.
See also: the miraculous painting, the stalls (1511-1519), the choir’s magnificent pendant
keystone, the stained glass window of St Crispin and St Crispinian, patron saints of shoemakers
(1530), the triptych by Nicolas Chichon (1523), the pulpit (1760) with the four evangelists and
the Archangel Michael slaying the dragon, and the organs (17th century), which feature in a
series of concerts each year in early summer.
The whole church has been a listed Historic Monument since 1914. At nightfall, the monument
is beautifully lit up.

Several other sites are also worth a visit:
- The roman churches with beautiful buildings to be seen in the communities to the west of
Bourg-en-Bresse: Montracol, Saint Rémy, Buellas and also Vandeins with its tympanum.
- Bressan farms with their Sarrasine chimneys, emblems of the history and the daily life of the
Bresse. They can be admired along the “Bresse route” which leads from Bourg-en-Bresse to the
Saone valley, passing through upper Bresse to the north west of the prefecture town. Several
farms are open to visits as museums: Maison du pays en Bresse, Sougey farm, De la Fôret farm
and the unmissable Bresse museum in Domaine des Planons. Some farms still rear poultry. All
of the farms play their part as eco-museums showing collections of furnishings and antique
objects. Several exhibitions and demonstrations shown occasionally encourage the visitor to
relive the past and discover traditional crafts.
Some mills, like Moulin Bruno in Jayat are another way to discover local heritage.
- The medieval city of Pérouges: at the heart of the Dombes region this ancient town of
craftsmen merchants and landowners is incredibly well preserved. Old stone houses, cobbled
streets and circular ground plan – change century !
- Some more sites to visit less than an hour from Bourg-en-Bresse: Ambronay abbey, Fléchères
castle, the Bonnet silk mills in Jujurieux, the city of Trévoux all the heart of a country of art and
history, Ars sur Formans (pilgrimage site), ...

Trévoux, town of art – and modernity
Rue[s] des Arts is now the home of 13 artists and craftsmen and women, at the heart of
the old town of Trévoux. Here you can encounter a sculptor working in stone, a stringedinstrument maker specialised in harps, a visual artist, a gilder, painters and sculptors, a
jewellery designer, a photographer, a potter, an upholsterer-decorator, a dressmaker
and an artistic collective that organises regular events. All the workshops are open at
least from April to December, on the first and third weekends of the month, from Friday
to Saturday. Entrance free.
Artistic and totally modern: a whole gallery of picturesque characters will accompany
you on your walk through Trévoux and the neighbouring towns, thanks to the smartphone
application “L’eau et les hommes” (“Water and People”), available in French and
English.
A new visitors’ area at the Musée Ferme de la Forêt
A farmyard/museum where visitors can discover some of the animals of the farm: ducks,
geese, a cock and Bresse chickens, next to a farmhouse with a Saracen chimney, to the
north-west of Bourg-en-Bresse.
FROM PAST TO PRESENT : BRESSAN CRAFTS
Several traditional crafts are still practiced and contribute to the reputation of the region!
Two clog-makers maintain the ancestral know-how of wooden clog manufacture and keep
this dying art alive in their workshop and with demonstrations at the farm museums or at local
festivals.
Several craftsmen keep the tradition of Bresse furnishings going: made from different woods
and decorated with motifs based on local flora, they include essential furnishing such as
cupboards, dressers and clocks. Workshops and antique shops are open to the public to show
off these skills.
The manufacture of enamels dates back to the middle-ages and adopted a specific style
in Bresse in the 19th C. Today only one enameller remains, in Bourg-en-Bresse, where – while
respecting tradition – he creates new and modern designs. A film can be shown in the shop for
better understanding of the art: the workshop opens its doors just twice a year.

in-store to better understand his art. The workshop is occasionally open to the public,
in particular during the company’s open day in March. To reward this traditional
know-how, the Entreprise du patrimoine vivant label has been awarded to Emaux
Bressans Jeanvoine.
Situated between the lakes of the Dombes, the Bressan bocage countryside and the foothills of
the Jura, Bourg-en-Bresse is a green city! Parks, gardens, fountains, green spaces and flowered
areas make it a city made for wandering. The city of Bourg-en-Bresse is also particularly
concerned about the quality of life and conservation of the environment: for many years the city
has invested in a “zero pesticide” program and more globally in the sustainable development
of the territory, as with the conurbation and the development of a climate-energy plan.
Seillon forest and its numerous blazed walking trails, off road cycle trails and hacking trails, the
rivers and lakes open for fishing or swimming, the Bouvent leisure area and its restful spaces are
all invitations to take a breath of fresh air close to the heart of the city.
The Seillon forest is a source of oxygen with 600 hectares of oaks and other trees. A host of trails
for pedestrians, off-road cyclists and horses are blazed. A trail of 1 ½ km has been created to
allow children to discover the forest with games and activities.
This green haven at the gates of the city offers 56 hectares of leisure space ! The huge lake
is much appreciated by sailing and kayak schools and recently a rowing school. The green
spaces are equipped with an obstacle course, an orientation trail, beach volleyball pitches,
table tennis areas, archery zones, games for kids, picnic areas and even a 9-hole golf course.
Swimming is monitored from mid-May to the beginning of September on the sandy beach and
in the paddling pool.
The cycleway, open partially to skaters and in its totality to pedestrians, links the
centre of Bourg-en-Bresse to the Seillon forest, passing by the Royal Monastery of
Brou and allowing a stop off at the Bouvent leisure area.
A guidebook was published in 2014 by the Bourg-en-Bresse Agglomeration. On sale
at the Tourist Office, it offers thirty rambles around Bourg-en-Bresse to discover the
heritage and landscape of the Jura foothills (a small mountain in Revermont) at
the edge of the Dombes. Fun trips for children and «pushchair walks» have been
included in order to satisfy everyone’s thirst for discovery.

With its large range of activities the Bourg-en-Bresse conurbation lets everyone get a breath of
fresh air at their own speed, whether with your partner, your family or a group of friends:
- Green activities: hiking, hacking, cycling, fishing, golf and more surprising: a corn maze
- Sports activities: climbing, horse-riding, paintball, aeronautics
- Aquatic activities: swimming, sailing, kayak, water-skiing, wakeboard/kneeboard
AROUND BOURG-EN-BRESSE, SEVERAL NATURAL SITES WORTH A VISIT
- The Bird Park, nature reserve of 180 hectares with more than 2 500 birds and 400 species from
all around the world , has one of the largest avian collections in Europe. And don’t miss the
fantastic show of birds in flight !
- Cerdon Caves: nestled in a green environment and facing onto the Bugey vinyards, the
caves offer a trail along the dry subterranean river bed to discover the natural arts of the
glacial world of the past.
- From the Ain gorges to the Saone valley, rivers and water are omnipresent in the landscape.
It’s possible to discover these green and pleasant places with a coach tour through the Ain
gorges. Many hiking or cycling trails but also river cruises on the Ain, Saone and Seille are
available to the public.

After the aviary for lories and lorikeets, the small parrots that you can feed by hand, in
2015 the Bird Park in Villars-lès-Dombes also opened a hummingbird house. In 2016, a
vertical visit, the aviary tower, will be inaugurated, where visitors can see the extraordinary
biodiversity of trees and enjoy a breathtaking view over the park’s central lake. The
park’s historic building, the House of Birds, has been transformed into a greenhouse.
Other development projects have also been announced: the redevelopment of the
African Plains and the creation of a greenhouse dedicated to Madagascar (2017), a
sensory immersion in extreme climatic areas where birds live (2018), a flight above the
landscapes to discover the birds along the major migratory routes (2019) and the wildlife
and history of the Australian bush (2020).
Culture, it’s in our nature
Above and beyond our rich heritage, culture can be enjoyed on a daily basis in Bourg-enBresse.
A large number of venues aim to be open to all visitors, all through the year, with highly varied
programmes:
- Bourg-en-Bresse Municipal Theatre: dance, music and theatre, but also puppet shows and
other events for youngsters are programmed from September to June, mainly in the magnificent
theatre in the town centre, with its façade decorated with masks and muses and with its interior
design in Italian style
- Le Zoom: films with live music, offbeat programming, cabaret, new work... This modern venue
is now an alternative to more traditional venues
- La Ferme à Jazz: this music venue is the warm setting for a whole host of jazz concerts all
through the year
- La Tannerie: a contemporary music venue that recently celebrated its tenth anniversary,
where concerts, jam sessions, musical cocktails and shows for young people are organised,
and where support is given for the development of young local talent
A series of special events completes the programme on offer, with such highlights as:
- Le Printemps des Ecritures, calligraphy festival
- The City of Bourg-en-Bresse cultural event, bringing together a large number of events and
sites around a special theme
- Br’Ain de Cirque, a festival showing all the facets of the art of the circus
- Les Mardis de l’Orgue, concerts by organists from France and abroad, with many big names
- Les Estivales de Brou, opera festival that celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2015
- Les Jeudis du Kiosque, concerts and films with live music under the magnificent bandstand in
the Square des Quinconces every Thursday during the summer
- Espace d’un Été, street art festival
- À la Folie… Pas du Tout, music festival at the Brou royal monastery (see p8)
- Animated film festival for young people

It’s a celebration for the juniors: paper chase in the old quarters, visits dedicated to children,

FIFRELIN: THE CHILDRENS’S FRIEND
A program run by the territory over the past few years has allowed us to understand and qualify
the tourism and leisure offers adapted to children and families. Our offer is now grouped under
the logo FIFRELIN, the children’s mascot, and is downloadable on: www.aupaysdefifrelin.fr
Ideas as diverse as a visit to a goat farm and cheese production, a story time ride in a horse-drawn
carriage, an art initiation nature trail, scientific workshops and also theatrical plays adapted to a
younger public are all available.
ZOOM ON FIFRELIN APOTHECARY
How did we heal people in our great-grandparents time (and even before!)? Why did the
apothecary use bear fat, violets or precious stones in his strange recipes ? Why is the snake the
emblem of the pharmacist ? Harry Potter had better hold on tight !
An animation (in French) offered to 6 to 12 year-olds every Wednesday at 3pm during the
French school holidays by the guides of the Bourg-en-Bresse Agglomération Tourist Office.
Length of visit: 1 ¼ hours. Reservation advisable.
Since 2013 this fun visit has been improved by workshops including the fabrication
of a cream just like the apothecaries of the time. An old style technique much
appreciated by the children.

New
The horadrome, time travellers
The horadrome is a new tour organised in the town of Bourg-en-Bresse to
(re)discover our heritage through archive documents while having fun. The
Department Archive service, in partnership with the Association Patrimoine des
Pays de l’Ain and the Tourist Office, invite visitors with their families to take a
tour through the old town district and all its treasures. The game lasts an hour
and is similar to a giant treasure hunt, with inspiration taken from geocaching –
participants use a GPS (although a version without GPS is also available).
With the help of a fully illustrated guide booklet, and following in the footsteps
of characters named Chronos, Kairos and Aiôn, participants travel from one
period to another. Children aged 6 and over are asked to solve riddles and
look for hidden documents, and become the heroes of this adventure in time.
The game was launched for the heritage discovery weekend in and around
Bourg-en-Bresse in June 2015, and represents an original immersion in the
history of the town, from the medieval fortifications to the participation of
Lalande secondary school pupils in the Resistance, via the construction of a
convent or the establishment of the Radior company. Reproductions of archive
documents, hidden in boxes that you seek out during the game, throw a new
light on the town.
The equipment of lasergame of Bourg-en-Bresse is fully renewed. This is a real
revolution in terms of playability and feel in the game since this material has the
latest technology , is much brighter and has many effects. In addition , a new
maze will soon be created.

24 hours in Bourg-en-Bresse
9am – a coffee on a café terrace in the old town, with a piece of Bressane tart. Peace and
pleasure to get the day off to a good start !
10am – stroll around town, free visitors’ guide from the Tourist Office in hand, to get to know the
city with Jérôme Lalande and Edgar Quinet, and learn more about the half-timbered houses,
Renaissance façades and fountains encountered along the way. Enjoy a shopping break in
the boutiques of the city centre.
On Wednesdays and Saturdays, pay a visit to the market, full of colours and flavours.
12.30pm – tasting Bresse chicken in cream is a must ! In the city centre, near the Royal Monastery
of Brou or in a country restaurant: there’s something for everyone.
2.30pm – on Saturday, pay a visit to the nearby apothecary (see page 8) or on Wednesday,
discover the Machine Operation Museum (Musée de la Mécanographie, see page 8). In
summer, head to Bouvent leisure park and the Seillon forest to enjoy the cool greenery. In
winter, be pampered at the Carré bien être, a well-being centre at the Carré d’eau water
sports centre in Bourg-en-Bresse.
4pm – not to be missed: a visit to the Royal Monastery of Brou, the city’s iconic monument (see
page 8).
7pm – Comté cheese, crispy gaudélice biscuits, Bugey wine… Enjoy a local aperitif before
sampling a lovely quenelle in Nantua sauce, or some frogs’ legs.

specific services for professional events but also preparation of welcome packs or sale of local
souvenirs, tickets for shows, concerts and leisure facilities.
This truly attentive assistance is available to associations, employee committees and also bus
tour operators, and French and overseas tour operators to facilitate and develop group tourism
in our destination.

SEMINARS, CONFERENCES, MEETINGS, INCENTIVES OR SPORTS COMPETITIONS
Business tourism has joined the range of services offered by the Bourg-en-Bresse Agglomération
Tourist Office and their partners.
In 2012 a correspondent was recruited by CAP3B (an association of public organisations of the
Bourg-en-Bresse zone) to find out what was on offer, to publicise and to prospect potential clients
in order to develop the business market in Bourg-en-Bresse and surrounding communities.
Since its creation this new service is proud to have welcomed the prestigious “Tulip Rally” from
the Netherlands, an international poker tournament, a symposium of French events committees,
a convention of transport companies (Agir), and also that of victim aid associations (UNAVEM)
with the participation of the French Keeper of the Seals. Many sports events were helped too.
A very positive result for a destination that is new to the market.

since 2014, NEW INFRASTRUCTURE FOR BUSINESS
Ekinox, an events venue, has opened in January 2014! The hall is open
for many concerts, sports and business events. Completely new, and
therefore adapted to today’s requirements, functional and modular it
brings a “plus” to Bourg-en-Bresse as a location for this market.
Ainterexpo, the Ain department’s convention centre and exhibition hall, where the
major fairs, many concerts and professional seminars are held, is finishing its face-lift.
The renovation will improve acoustics, a structure that is more adequate to today’s
expectations. The new version of Ainterexpo will open in the first days of 2015.
Other projects should eventually enable us to position ourselves more easily on this
business market: the multimodal hub at Bourg-en-Bresse station, to be finished in
early 2015, and improved road services which bypass the city.

the rooms, with two rooms now accessible to people with reduced mobility and a
meeting room welcoming up to 20 people with modular furniture in a warm setting.
- At the Bourg-en-Bresse Centre Ibis Hotel, behind the Brou royal monastery, new rooms
and the restaurant will be renovated by the end of March 2016
HOLIDAY COTTAGES
- A new gîte, La Margelle, has opened in Tossiat, close to Bourg-en-Bresse. After
the Revermont gîte and L’Escale bed and breakfast, both part of the Clévacances
network, this is our third holiday destination – a highly modern gîte with a swimming
pool, on a fine site between Bourg-en-Bresse and the small mountains of Revermont.
- La Commanderie gîte in Châtenay, between Bourg-en-Bresse and The Dombes,
has been awarded the Tourisme et Handicap label for hearing, mental and visual
disabilities. The gîte is also a member of L’Ain à cheval (“L’Ain on Horseback”) and
welcomes horse-riders for one or more nights.

for the department), Rhône-Alpes Tourism (same thing on a regional level), the city of
Bourg-en-Bresse Agglomération, CAP3B, the major tourism networks and organisations and

Several paper documents are available for clients to assist them in their discoveries :
- A visits and a leisure guide (annual, bilingual French-English): gives the major events, sites,
leisure activities and shops and also contains a map and practical information.
- A accommodation guide which all the places to stay.
- A gastronomic guide. Aiming to spotlight the major asset of the region, it presents restaurants,
livestock breeders and other tasty spots ! Launched in 2014.
- A self-guided visit (in French, English, Dutch, German, Italian, and a short version in Spanish):
offers self-guided tours with historical and heritage explanations.
- Three calendars of visits and events are offered to the public by the tourist office: February to
May, June to September and October to January.
- A monthly calendar: listing all the public events organised within the conurbation by the
different associations, institutions and businesses.
- A group brochure (annual, in French and German and now in English): lists a selection of stays,
day trips and “A la carte” offers (see page 20).

- A school brochure (annual): listing the tourist office’s offers for schools, high schools and
colleges and the many pedagogical and fun offers of our partners (see page 24).
DIGITAL DOCUMENTATION
Several internet sites are managed by the tourist office:
- For the general public www.bourgenbressetourisme.fr. Accommodation, eateries, ideas for
trips, sites to visit, leisure activities, practical information, online booking and also great tip and
a not-to-be-missed virtual tour ! The English version is essentially the same.
Two web portals, accessible through classic or mobile internet, were opened in 2012 in Italian
and in German.
- A site for groups www.groupes.bourgenbressetourisme.fr: setting out the offers of stays, visits
and “A la carte” for this type of client, it also has a separate tab for schools with all offers open
to the teaching profession.
- A site giving the details and many visual of the Apothecary:

The Tourist Office’s new websites give more importance to pictures to attract visitors
and highlight the destination: full-screen photos, a photo gallery, videos and photo links
posted on Instagram.
The websites are naturally accessible on all kinds of screens since they have been
developed using “responsive web design”- a version of the site made for computers has
been adapted to smartphones and tablets.
Links to social networks have been strengthened, making the website a part of the
Tourist Office’s digital ecosystem and, above all, a part of a tourist’s typical visit: content
can be shared on Twitter, Facebook etc., there are links to the photo-reporters’ picture
site, set up with Rhône-Alpes Tourisme (highlighting the pictures posted on Instagram with
the tags #bresse or #bourgenbresse), etc.
The Tripadvisor widget has also been added to the package for tourist service providers,
and linked to the online reservation module for service providers who offer it, allowing
web users to follow the entire information and reservation process for their holidays on a
single site.
The Tourist Office websites are still mainly supplied by Sitra, the regional tourist information
system, guaranteeing quality and daily updates of content.
Web users now fill an online basket using Tourist Office suggestions for short stays and
activities on offer in each season. This feature aims at making it easier for our visitors, but
also at generating greater consumption in the region.
The Tourist Office contact details are now shown on the home page with one new feature:
a telephone number with a call feature for visitors using a smartphone when the Tourist
Office is open and e-mail with a message sent via a simple click when the Tourist Office
is closed.
New sections have been added, including a members’ area to make contacts between
the Tourist Office and its partners easier, a recipe page to highlight our gastronomy
and regional chefs or the comments of our “ambassadors” sharing points of view from
outside the town and “non-official” favourites. The human aspect is also underlined with
a presentation of the Tourist Office team.

Staying in touch with clients is also:
- Presence on social networks: The Bourg-en-Bresse Tourist Office has a YouTube channel –
EnviedeBourg, where videos of various sites and leisure activities are shown. A Facebook page,
Bourg en Bresse Agglomération Tourism, was created at the same time: looking to find new
clients and to win loyalty with tips, recipes, competitions and odd bits of information. Instagram,
Scoopit and Viadeo complete the tourist office’s web visibility.
- Subscription to different newsletters: one of which is specifically for tourism professionals in the
area, another for the general public to offer tips and remind them of unmissable events and
finally one for employee committees with special offers for ticketing, concerts, leisure activities
and visits offered monthly.
