Digging into the Details
Village Life December 2015 Digging into the Details: Project Envision Update Many signs of construction will soon be evident around campus as Project Envision kicks off! First and foremost, you will notice changes to parking and traffic patterns. The color coded map indicates where construction sites will be. Please note that the yellow lot near the Chapel is for visitors and volunteers. If you need to drive to the Village Center, this is the lot primarily designated for visitors and volunteers. Please consider using the campus shuttle or walking, if possible, if you are coming to the Village Center for an event or activity. Please note some very important information and key dates: will be from the newly re-opened entrance/ exit near the cottage at 635/636 Messiah Circle. • January: In order to better accommodate visitors and guests, the Messiah Village receptionists will move to the Chapel entrance lobby during construction. That area will become our new “main entrance.” Access to the current Village Center lobby will become more limited as access to that area of campus will also be limited during construction. • December 1: The exit from Messiah Circle to Mt. Allen Drive will be closed from December 1 – December 22 as contractors widen that area and convert it to a two-way access point. • December 7: Messiah Lifeways team members begin parking in newly assigned parking spaces and using color-coded tags. Please use extra caution when driving around campus as more people will be walking between buildings and on sidewalks. • December 22: The current main entrance to campus from Mt. Allen Drive will close. The only way to enter and exit campus from Mt. Drop-In Tour of Executive Team’s Cottage The Executive Team is now occupying office space at 625 Messiah Circle. Please stop by to visit them and see the new offices on Wednesday, December 2 between 1:30 and 4:00 pm. As always, our construction and maintenance teams have done an outstanding job in transforming the cottage into effective work space for the Executive Team as they are temporarily relocated during the project. Scarecrow Fun Hampden and Manchester residents joined together to create scarecrows for display in the Hampden hallway. Nothing scary about their creative teamwork! Two residents were speaking about a trip to Israel. The one resident asked, “Aren’t you afraid of the guerillas?” The other replied, “I didn’t know they had a zoo there.” 4 - Village Life Experiencing Hershey In early October, the Laurel neighborhoods took a trip to Hershey’s Chocolate World. Residents got to enjoy Hershey’s 4D Experience: The Mystery of the Chocolate Factory. They were able to interact with the characters in the show while enjoying the sweet sensations of delicious Twizzlers and gallons of chocolate. There were smiles and laughter from many of the residents when they donned their 4D glasses. The event was finished off by enjoying a delicious chocolate chip cookie and browsing the store! The residents loved the Hershey experience and its amazing technology. One resident remembered when her husband would get home from his job at the Hershey factory. Our Hershey experience was altogether wonderful – whether it inspired memories from the past or generated special new memories! Update on Community Support Services Messiah Lifeways Community Support Services has been making important community connections, particularly with a local church. Linda Gemberling and Matt Gallardo partnered with St. Peter’s Lutheran as the church focused on caregivers during November. In addition to two special luncheons, CSS also presented during two Sunday morning services. Churches are natural places for talking about the stresses of caregiving and how we can better equip our communities to face the challenges of aging loved ones and families. Fortunately, our team was able to give great suggestions about options like home care, Adult Day, Rehab, and Respite, as well as suggesting enrichment options like our Pathways Institute for Lifelong Learning and senior centers. Enrichment programs such as Pathways, Wellness and the Mechanicsburg Place Senior Center. Connecting with this neighboring congregation was a wonderful way to spread the word about CSS and assist the church in caring for its congregants. If you know of a local congregation that might like to explore these topics in a Sunday School class or lunch setting, please contact Matt Gallardo at 591.7225. December 2015 - 5 Veterans Day We had wonderful weather for a stirring Veterans Day Ceremony at the Cumberland County Courthouse. Our trusty driver, Ben Myers, dropped us off out front so we didn’t have to walk too far. R. J. Harris welcomed us, and Martha Thomas sang the national anthem. After pledging allegiance to the flag, Rev. Walter Reed gave an invocation. A choir of homeschooled children from Carlisle sang “America the Beautiful” before a message from LTC Greg W. Ank, Garrison Commander of Carlisle Barracks. Outside, we were honored to watch him place the wreath on the monument as a 7-gun salute and bugle rendition of “Taps” played. Before heading home, we shared a delicious lunch at Olive Garden, where several veterans in our group enjoyed a complimentary meal. We enjoyed the reverence and pride exhibited this day and felt honored to be part of the annual celebration hosted by the Joint Veterans Council of Carlisle. Active Aging Week Art teacher Lorraine Finicle and the residents on Donegal enjoyed a special class during “Active Aging Week.” She taught a lot about painting, and everyone had a wonderful time. 6 - Village Life Harry Kohr.................... 12/1 Best Wishes Bette Galvin................. 12/14 Florence Detweiler..... 12/22 Sanna Trouton............. 12/1 Wilma Musser............. 12/15 Mary Armistead......... 12/22 Ruth Christman........... 12/3 Dorothy Jacobs.......... 12/15 Thelma Erney............. 12/22 George Bundy............... 12/4 Alberto Gamez........... 12/17 June Lingle.................. 12/24 Robert Goodling.......... 12/5 Patricia Souder........... 12/18 Helen Lappano........... 12/24 Anne Ford..................... 12/5 Caroline Jones............ 12/18 Caroline Erney............ 12/25 Richard Long................ 12/7 Evelyn Houseal........... 12/19 Robert Weir................. 12/25 Robert Worman............ 12/8 Alice Houck................. 12/19 Alice Egland................ 12/26 Lois King........................ 12/9 Samuel Brubaker........ 12/19 Elaine O’Hara.............. 12/26 Thomas Shriver.......... 12/10 Dean Peck.................... 12/20 Gloria Boyer................ 12/27 Cathrine Rowe............ 12/10 Arlene Mixell.............. 12/20 Alden Scarborough... 12/27 Leigh Hoffman........... 12/10 Norman Zimmerman.12/20 Mary Van Dyke........... 12/28 Arlene Peck................. 12/11 Charles Rodgers......... 12/22 Marjorie Justh............ 12/29 Helen Hollinger.......... 12/12 Fannie McBeth............ 12/22 Cameron Mumper...... 12/29 Harriet Townsend...... 12/14 Robert Sheaffer.......... 12/22 Jean Dueland.............. 12/30 Happy Birthday Happy Anniversary Howard & Cena Kauffman 12/15/1956......................................59 years Donnell & Virginia Zurflieh 12/22/1951......................................64 years Keith & Belva Durbin 12/16/1950......................................65 years Ted Windsor & Fern Miller 12/23/2005......................................10 years Donald & Grace Cook 12/17/1961......................................54 years Dwayne & Normalou Stutzman 12/29/1956......................................59 years James & Mildred Otstot 12/20/1944......................................71 years December 2015 - 7 Man Cave Men’s Fellowship Outing On November 17, a small group from the Men’s Fellowship Group “Man Cave” went to Historic York to tour some of the facilities of the York County Heritage Trust. The tour included the Agricultural and Industrial Museum and the Colonial Complex including General Gates House, Golden Plough Tavern and the 1777 Colonial Court House. The yellow airplane is the 1937 Aeronca K in which Pastor Charlie’s father made a historic crosscontinental flight from Hanover, Pa to and from Spokane, Washington in 1938. Pictured in front of the court house are Dick Long, their tour guide Lauren, Pastor Charlie Hostetter and Jacob Stern. 8 - Village Life Autumn Field Trips Nittany residents were able to observe the beauty of fall as we took several trips throughout the surrounding counties. Beautiful colored leaved and crisp air made us aware that we needed to enjoy this time, for we all know winter is fast approaching! During one trip, we made a special stop at Meadowbrook Gourd Farm. We were able to see and learn that not only do the gourd fields supply their own beauty with their big white flowers, but the gourds are also used to make so many beautiful and long lasting decorations from pumpkins to snowmen! We were so impressed that we have decided to try to make our own snowmen for our Harvest Room tables – stay tuned!
