APRIL 2013
The Village of Glendale Crossing is launching the
Music & Memory program, which brings iPods
loaded with personalized music selections to
residents who have dementia to enhance their
memories and enrich their lives. Grounded in research about how brains
respond to music, a personalized music program has been proven to be a
life-changing experience for many elderly and resident who have dementia. We
hope this program will demonstrate the powerful abilities of music to engage,
animate, support memory retrieval, and return a sense
of dignity and identity to residents who need support.
This program helps assist each participant in reaching
his or her highest level of functioning and improving
quality of life, which is what we strive for with every
resident. Team members will interview families and
residents to discover their favorite songs and preferred
genres of music and create playlists specific to each
person. The music will be downloaded onto personal iPods for each resident in
the program. We have enough iPods of start with 3 iPods per neighbourhood,
but our goal is that we will have enough for all residents to have free access of
their own personalized iPod. We need your help in 4 key ways:
1. Let us know if you would be interested in being a part of the program by either
identifying yourself as a resident who would want the use of a personalized
iPod, or as a family member on behalf of your loved one.
2. Donate your old iPod, iTunes gift card, or cd`s
3. Put our ``looking for donations`` poster up at your place of work, worship,
leisure or educational institution.
4. Help us interview residents about their musical interests, keep the iPods
charged and in great working order.
For more information about the program here at Glendale you can talk to
Jennifer Hall Director of Recreation. For more information about the national
Music and memories program check out www.Musicandmemory.org
As some of you may know, my family and I are beginning
our journey to make our family of three into a family of
four. We are blessed to have been chosen to adopt our
second beautiful daughter from Vietnam and begin our
journey March 21, 2013.
It’s currently 12:15 am and I think of how blessed I am to
be part of the Glendale family. All the well wishes and
congratulations have meant so much to me and my family. I feel like you have all
gone through this process with me and am forever grateful for the love and support
you all have given.
Since I consider Glendale my second family I would love for all of you to follow
our journey to our second gift, “Remy”. To help you follow our journey we have
set up a blogsite which you can log onto at www.oursecondgift.blogspot.ca . We
will post as many updates and pictures as we can so you
can all feel like you are there with us. I hope you enjoy
them.
I will definitely miss you all while I am away but will
enjoy the time with my family. I will certainly be in to
visit once we have returned and settled in and look forward to introducing Remy to you all. I know she will be
welcomed with open arms just as her big sister ”Emma”
has by all of you. Once again thank you all.
Yours truly,
The Pastrano Family

I just came back from vacation and am
feeling very refreshed and ready to greet the Spring.
I’m looking forward to sunny days ahead, with lots of
flowers and mud. I am especially looking forward to
judging the Easter Bonnet parade. Just a small note
that my vote cannot be bought by offering expensive
chocolates or bottles of wine.
The other day we were in a huddle discussing why
Glendale Crossing has a large wait list, and thus high
Michelle Vermeeren,
occupancy, with some people having to wait three years
General Manager
to come to Glendale. We kept on asking why?... and
came up with reasons such as newness of the building,
the WOW factor on Main Street, clean and fresh neighbourhoods, and friendly
team members. We agreed that one of our biggest factors is our team members.
We need to hire the very best people. We can do this by working hard and
changing our hiring practices a bit. We are taking applications via our web site,
and applicants have to fill out a questionnaire to determine if they are a good fit
with the organization. We then hold group interviews and assess whether or not
people can work well within a team. After a 1:1 interview and reference
checking, we start the orientation process, including a “Meet the Village” chance
to work with team members in all departments. Hopefully we will be
welcoming those team members who are going to assist us in changing the
culture of aging, by empowering residents, building authentic relationships and
by being flexible. I am excited by the future.
I want to talk about how impressed I am with our
Residents’ Council. The turnout for the last few
meetings has been huge, and the conversation has
been very stimulating. The minutes of the meetings
are posted on Main Street, and all residents are
encouraged to attend. The Council meets on the third
Tuesday of every month at 2:00 pm.
Ask me what a “feather boa intervention” is all about!

Tom Jarbeau was born on April 15, 1933 in a small town by the name of Arnprior just outside of Ottawa,
Ontario. He was the youngest sibling of two with one older brother named Albert. His father was the caretaker
of the church in their home town, while his mother stayed at home. As a young boy, one thing that T.J. enjoyed
was swimming. He loved swimming so much he would skip school to go to the park and swim for the afternoon.
T.J. was a very hardworking man and worked in many different fields throughout his years of employment. He
started out working in Arnprior for the local hydro company digging holes for hydro posts,. He then moved to
Labrador where he worked for the Iron Ore Company as a stock keeper for truck parts. From there he moved
back to Oshawa to work for General Motors where he worked as a laborer lifting hoods of cars on different
lines.
The last company that T.J. worked for was Davey Tree Expert Co. where he trimmed down the limbs of trees.
During the long weekend, T.J. decided to catch a ride with one of his coworkers. It was around 5 a.m. and T.J.
was having a nap in the cab of the truck when all of a sudden the truck hit a Cadillac. Since there were no seat
belts back then, T.J. flew out the side of the truck and landed on the highway. From there he became
unconscious for 14 days and was no longer able to work after that.
In 1970, T.J. responded to an ad in the paper in the dating section to a woman who was also a Jehovah witness
by the name of Lillian. From there, he continued to write letters back and forth to this woman until one day her
sister drove her down to meet him. From there they had an instant connection and were married in 1971 in
Battle Creek, Michigan. T.J. has three children, 2 daughters and a son. On December 26th, 1972 his eldest child
Thomas Amos was born, and 5 years later they had their first daughter Sarah
followed by Esther Marie in 1978. T.J. is also the proud grandfather of two
granddaughters named Felicia and D.J.
On December 12, 2012 T.J. moved into The Village of Glendale Crossing. His
current hobbies here at Glendale include playing cards and going on the computer. He enjoys crib, but his favourite card game is bridge. He says he loves
to play bridge but there aren’t very many bridge players around. T.J. is a very
friendly man who enjoys striking up conversations with others and loves to
have a good laugh. You can often find him in the community centre chatting
up a storm with the recreation staff. He is a wonderful man to be around and
we are happy to have him here at The Village of Glendale Crossing!

An April birthday can be either an Aries
(April 1st-19th) or a Taurus (April 20th30th). Aries is a strong fire sign. Most
Aries are curious, energetic, ambitious
and restless. In approaching their goals
they act with confidence and in their
dealings with others they are direct. If
you have an Aries birthday you were
likely a bold and competitive child. Aries
usually retain their competitive natures
into adulthood and
carry the force of their
personalities into the
workplace and their
relationships. Famous
Aries include Thomas
Jefferson (April 13)
and Leonardo Da
Vinci (April 15).
Lost Clothing?
Every month we will now be bringing all the lost laundry
to the community center on the last weekend of the month
so you can search for your long lost missing sock and
sweater. Dates for April are Saturday April 27th and April
28th, 2013.

"The sun was warm but the wind was hill.
You know how it is with an April day.
When the sun is out and the wind is still,
You're one month on in the middle of May.
But if you so much as dare to speak,
a cloud come over the sunlit arch,
And wind comes off a frozen peak,
And you're two months back in the middle
of March."

Our chimes choir and vocal choir gave us a great performance at their Spring fling
concert in March. Are you interested in joining the choir?
Led by our music Therapist Jill, the choir has practice every Friday afternoon and
new members are always welcome.
Boys will be boys! Lloyd, Ed and TJ were captured on film this month doing something that made their day… drinking a Tim Hortons coffee, flipping the first steak of
the season on the grill and making wooden model boats.
Shown on the left:
2Handsclay came for
a visit to help us make
some beautiful clay
pots!. They will be
back again for a future
projects.
Even with the snow still flying outside
we have officially began the spring season. Easter is coming in
just over a week, and if we look outside on the front lawn of Glendale we have even spotted some Canadian geese that have
started to return. This is surely a sign of spring even if that
Groundhog lied to us in February.
We have some great news! We as a Village are preparing for some
spring cleaning of our own. A few months ago the leadership team
introduced the idea of a Village wide cleaning to commence each
afternoon in each neighbourhood for about 10 minutes. We trialed
it in two neighbourhoods, one in each tower and found out a few
things. The first was that it really didn't take
us that long. We were able to meet on the
neighbourhood grab our cart and clean all
touch points and horizontal surfaces (including
the dining room) in about 10 minutes. The
second thing was how great it felt knowing
that we made it "sparkle" just a little bit more
for our residents. Truly, it gave us all the opportunity to take some ownership and show
our pride in efforts made for the residents. We
are looking forward to sharing this experience
with each of you in April. I have issued a challenge to our team members to help us
Nick Zalitech and his little girl at
name our project “X”. We have had sevlast years Easter bonnet parade.
eral names float around but none of them
have stuck. There will be a prize for the winning submission which
is a gift Certificate to the Village Harvest Bakery in Wortley Village. I look forward to letting you know about the winning submission and more about our new cleaning initiative.
Nick Zalitach, Director of Environmental Services.
Every resident has the right to share a
room with another resident according to
their mutual wishes, if appropriate accommodation is available."
"
In other words...
You have the right to share a room with another resident, so long
as you both agree and space is available at the home.
The person you share with could be just a friend or someone you are
romantically involved with. You can choose to share your room with
someone of the same or opposite sex. It does not matter whether you
are married to each other or not."
Turn to Channel 133 on your television and wow, there will be all kinds of
radio stations! Once 133 is put into the TV it comes up blank , however
wait a few seconds and the #1 will appear beside 133. This is the first of a
multiple of radio stations for everyone's` likes and
dislikes and languages. Residents, you can then
scroll up on your remotes to the station you like.
Channel 133-25 is Tillsonburg`s 101.3. There is
CBC, Zoomer from Kitchener, a classical station,
CJBK Talk radio from London, even Toronto
stations. Happy listening!
Thank you to Marilyn Garrett from our Family
Council for discovering this great tip!
Welcome Spring! I hope the arrival of spring brings
us some nice weather soon. I just wanted to offer a
reminder to everyone coming in to visit that we need
to be aware of the scents brought into the building.
Some of our residents are very
sensitive to scents in their environment, so please keep perfumes, air fresheners, and scented
personal products to a minimum when visiting.
Please join our big bike for heart and stroke team. We are
riding on June 20th at 4:30 pm and are looking for bikers.
If you are interested please see Christy Cook or Jennifer
Lantz for a pledge form. Last year we won the Best spirit award and hope
to reclaim it again this year.
Save the Date! June 1st/13 will be our Family Picnic Fundraiser for the Big
Bike. We will have BBQ for sale and lots of fun games for the whole
family. Hope to see you there.
Maureen Dwyer,
Our Chaplain
Welcome to Spring: the season in which we seem to
be filled with joy, energy and rebirth. I know I get
excited at seeing all the signs of life before us. Make
sure and take time to enjoy the beauty of nature
and marvel at the growth in the littlest things like
snow drops… to the larger like leaves on trees. April
22 in Earth Day, make sure and give thanks to our
Creator for this amazing planet we live in.
We had our Spiritual Care Advisory Team meeting recently. I am
humbled at the great work that our Volunteers do to enhance the
spiritual lives of our residents and their families. This enhancement
not only includes Sunday Services, but bible studies, prayer circles,
music ministry, Anglican and Non Denominational Communion Services, Masses, Communion, Rosary and 1:1 visits with residents. We
are so blessed. Thank you for living the gospel amongst our
wonderful residents at Glendale.
