GAAPALETTE - Glendale Art Association
GAAPALETTE September 2012 The Glendale Art Association, a Non-Profit Organization Dedicated “To Create and Preserve Beauty and Promote Art Appreciation” Next Meeting: Eric Merrill “Expressive Still Life Painting” in Santa Ana, CA; California State University of Los Angeles, CA; the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Orleans, MA; the Long Beach Museum of Art in Long Beach, CA; the Mission San Juan Capistrano Museum in San Juan Capistrano, CA; the Pasadena Museum of California Art and the Pasadena Museum of History, both in Pasadena, CA; and the Frederick R. Weisman Museum at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA. Don’t miss this inspiring demonstration. Eric will be raffling off one seat at his upcoming workshop. Wed., Sept. 12, 7 pm Sparr Heights Community Center 1613 Glencoe Way Glendale In this demonstration, Eric Merrell will use a still life arrangement as an avenue to study color and design. Eric worked with Al Gury at The University of the Arts and The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, both in Philadelphia. After two years, he transferred to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. During school Merrell worked at the Norton Simon Museum, where the long hours on the job offered plenty of time to study and sketch from the collections. He also worked for the California Art Club, researching historic material and at one point interviewing Evelyn Payne Hatcher, the daughter of Edgar and Elsie Payne, early CAC members. Upon receiving a BFA with honors and graduating from Art Center in 2001, Merrell pursued painting. Merrell’s work has been exhibited at the Bennington Center for the Arts in Bennington, VT; the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art Join us on the 2nd Wednesday of each month (Except July & Aug) Bring finger food and party snacks. We were not totally on vacation during July and August as our Fall Salon 2012 team was busy planning our next big show. We had half a dozen or so meetings—and we made sure to have plenty of munchies and a lot of laughs at these sessions. We are on track for another great show and have seven sponsors helping out to meet our goal of five scholarships for art students. By now you have all received the Call For Artists and have seen that there are cash or gift certificate awards in all eight cate- gories for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes. Note that the Glendale Images award is a $300 gift certificate from Swains! If you don't have a Glendale image ready to submit now, there is still time to paint (or sculpt or photograph) one. Shree has put together another paint-out schedule for our twice-amonth opportunity to get together and paint en plein air and...yes...get together for some artist camaraderie over lunch. We are featuring a notable artist demonstrator at our September 12 meeting, Eric Merrill. At the end of his demo he will be raf- fling off a place in an upcoming Eric Merrill workshop. Don't miss this chance to win a valuable workshop experience with a topnotch artist. See you at the September 12 meeting and don’t forget to bring an artwork for the mini show—it is a good way to see what members are currently creating —and a good way to get feedback on your work. —Dick Heimbold MEMBERNEWS Bruce Trentham sold five paintings at the Malibu Art Festival in July. Dick Heimbold sold four. Several of our members, Dulcie Adams, George Jung, Terry Romero Paul, Miriam Thorin and Ruben Yadao will be exhibiting at the Towns Burr Gallery in Burbank.
