Change this school…but to • Teach you something new or • Remind you of what you already know about. add more school rules…but to • Force everyone into following the rules…but to • Encourage everyone to create a respectable, responsible, and safe campus. What is the purpose of high school? Ask one hundred people and you will likely get 100 answers. In fact, one teacher did just that. A teacher asked 300 people both inside and outside of public education to answer that question in 30 words or less and published her findings in the July 22, Huffington Post. (http://huffingtonpost.com/heather-wolpertgawron/what-is-the-purpose-ofpu_b_774497.html) What is the purpose of high school? The top 5 answers were in the following categories: 1. Teach the skills for passionate advocacy. 2. Prep the students for their future participation in our democratic process. 3. Educate them with future skills to function in the future world. 4. Grant equal access and opportunity to the same high-level of learning. 5. Develop skills to have options in life. Our purpose is to graduate ALL students prepared to be successful in any postsecondary endeavor. Examples include: missing a class, already passed a class, or a level change. Elective change of mind will NOT be made during the first week of school. Elective Change of Mind will be Sept.1st-Sept. 2nd from 8:00am to 8:30am and 4:05pm to 4:30pm in the main foyer. If you need to speak with your counselor at any time other than before or after school, please complete a green “Call Slip” in the counseling office. WE ARE A “NO PLACE FOR HATE” CAMPUS Do not be a bystander #UPSTANDER Campus-Wide Expectations • Closed Campus – Students cannot leave campus during the school day (even for lunch), unless checked out by parent/guardian or have early release. • Cellphones/Electronics – Must be turned off and used only during teacher or administrator directed activity, NOT in hallways, common areas, or classroom. Academic Expecations •Attendance Requirement - Attendance will affect the ability to earn credit in all courses. (Must be present 90% of class time). •Academic dishonesty - if you make a poor choice could result in grade reduction and/or discipline consequences. •Exam Exemptions - Grades AND Attendance will determine your eligibility. You will be able to “opt out” of up to 3 exams if you keep your grades up and have near perfect attendance. •EOC - End of Course Exams are only a part of your academic portfolio. Take advantage of Prep Classes that are announced. •UIL Eligibility - You must pass to play. Find balance so you do not fall behind. Attendance Expectations • Attendance Requirement - Student will receive a noncredit (NC) after the 9th absence. • 90% Rule - Student must attend class 90% of the time it is offered to receive credit for the class. • Texas Compulsory Attendance - State law requires school children (age 6-18) to attend school each day that instruction is provided. • Excused Absence - A student has two days to turn in a note to the attendance office upon the day they return to school regarding any absence. Attendance Expectations •Tardy vs. Absence - Tardy after the bell rings. Unexcused absence AFTER 5 minutes (at the 6 minute mark). •Exemptions- Will allow students with good attendance, behavior and academic performance to exempt up to 3 semester exams in any subject for each semester. •Verification Of Enrollment (VOE) Requirements- Must be in compliance with the 90% rule in order to receive the form. Cafeteria Expectations • Clean up all trash and put away trays. • Make sure your student account always has money. (Max charge is $5.00). • Must present ID to use accounts(even with cash). • Cannot leave the cafeteria or courtyard area without a pass. Classroom/Hallway Behavior • Students will follow ALL classroom/hallway expectations and policies in the Student/Parent Handbook. • Move quickly/orderly and get to class on time. Make it a habit. Walk and talk. No standing around in the circle. • Follow classroom expectations reviewed by each of your teachers. • Listen to and respect all staff members and their requests. • Treat students and adults with respect and keep Madison hallways friendly and safe. Portable Expectations •Students will move quickly to next class and not loiter/congregate in outside areas. •Students may not “hang out” in the outside areas during class time. •Utilize the nearest restroom when given a pass. •Must have a pass when exiting the classroom. Library Expectations •When visiting the library you must have a Madison ID and you must sign in. •All school rules apply while in the library regardless of the time of day. •Tutoring hours Tuesday & Thursday 4:146:00pm. Dress Code Highlights • Hats may not be worn in the building. • Holes in pants will not be visible above the knee. • No sagging. • No spaghetti straps or tube-tops. • IDs must be carried at all times and produced upon request. (requirement for cafeteria lines, library and to leave the classroom) • No pajamas or house shoes. • Your clothes should not be revealing your undergarments. • Refer to Student/Parent Handbook for more details. Cellphone/Electronics Expectations • Cellphones/Electronics – Must be turned off and used only during teacher or administrator directed activity, NOT in hallways, common areas, or classroom (student is responsible for the safety of their own items). This includes texting and social media. • Music must be played with Earbuds/Headphones. NO LOUD MUSIC. • Earbuds/Headphones are not to be used during passing periods. Extra-Curricular Activities • ALL School rules and policies are in effect. • Expectations for students at off-campus school related activities is the same as if students are on campus! • ID’s should be in your possession at ALL school functions. • All Madison students (and especially those who participate in extracurricular activities) are held to a higher standard & must also be in compliance with their organization’s code of conduct. Medications • All medication intended for students shall be kept in the school clinic. • Administration of medication will take place in the clinic and requires written parent permission. • All medications must be in the original prescription container. • Children may NOT carry any medication on their person. Parents must deliver the medication to the school nurse in the clinic. PARKING ON CAMPUS • • • • • • • • • Parking is a privilege not a right. Decal must be displayed and readable at all times. Must park in assigned student lots. Leaving campus without permission will result in loss of parking privileges—permit will be confiscated immediately. If all students in vehicle do not have permission to leave campus, owner of vehicle will lose parking privileges. Driving reckless or violating parking regulations could result in loss of parking privileges. Duplicating, forging, or using another student’s parking decal will result in loss of parking privileges. Permits are NOT transferable and cannot be shared. ALL NEISD High Schools are closed campuses. Prohibited Items Students may be subject to disciplinary actions for being in possession of prohibited items such as (but not limited to): - cigarette lighters/matches - tobacco/e-cigarette any bladed instruments - guns of any kind ammunition of any type - laser pointers drugs (all drugs) - pornographic materials skateboards/inline skates - lighter medications (over the counter or prescription) dice, cards, & trading cards associated with illegal activity/gambling Social Media • It is expected that our students are good digital citizens and abide by the rules and guidelines set forth by NEISD. • Students are responsible for compliance with the current Student/Parent Handbook which is online: http://www.neisd.net/pupil/documents/1516SecondaryHandbook.pdf • Violations involving the misuse of electronic devices and/or social media will result in disciplinary actions. • Stay connected in a positive way: https://twitter.com/MadisonMavsSATX Student ID Expectations • Secondary students are required to obtain a school identification badge and have it in their possession at all times, ideally on a lanyard. • Cannot alter the ID (marker, stickers, pictures over face, etc.) • Lost/Damaged/Defaced ID replacement--$5.00 in AP Office. YOU WILL NEED TO SHOW ID FOR THE FOLLOWING: •Purchase items in the cafeteria •Library access •Purchase a parking pass •Pass to leave class What can get me in ‘trouble’? Dress Code Violation Cell Phone/Texting No Student ID Tardy to Class Disrespecting Others Skipping Class Weapons On Campus Truancy Theft Inappropriate text/photos Harassment/Bullying Off Campus Truancy Threats Fighting/Assault Persistent Misbehavior Drugs (under the influence/in possession) FIGHTING/THREATS • Physical Contact (push, shove, kick, slap, grab, etc.) • Intentionally or knowingly threatening another with injury or to damage property. • Any action or behavior, that is, or could be, dangerous or harmful to another person. • Physical contact with another when the person knows or should reasonably believe that the other will regard the contact as offensive or provocative. • ALL fights WILL result in DISCIPLINARY CONSEQUENCE. A ticket for disorderly conduct—fighting may be issued. Searches/Investigations • School officials may search a student and/or their vehicle if there is reasonable suspicion. • Students shall be responsible for any prohibited item found in their lockers or vehicles while on school property or at school-sponsored or school-related activities. • Inspections of lockers may be conducted by school authorities for any reason at any time, without notice, without student consent, and without a search warrant. • Students caught in unauthorized areas or entering/leaving campus without permission are subject to being searched. • IF YOU ARE “HOLDING” OR “STORING” ANYTHING FOR ANOTHER STUDENT, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT ITEM. Any violation on school property, at school sponsored events and within 300 feet of school property—WILL result in disciplinary actions that could include: •Expulsion •Alternative High School •Home Suspension •In-School Suspension •Overnight Suspension •Parent conferences •Detention Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things SENIOR INFORMATION • Class Sponsors: Ms. Acosta & Ms. Harrison • Administrators: Mr. Herrera & Ms. Gatlin • Senior Parent Meeting is Tuesday, September 29th at 6pm in the library. • Panoramic Picture is Wednesday, November 18th at 10:30am. • Cap and Gown Presentation is January 27th at 10:30am in the PAC • Graduation is Saturday, June 4th at 7:30pm at the Freeman Coliseum. • @JMHSSeniorClass - stay connected on the Senior Class Twitter. JUNIOR INFORMATION • Class Sponsor: Ms. LeNoir • Class Administrator: Mr. Brooks • Class Ring presentation is September 23rd at 10:30am in PAC. • Some Highlights: We plan and organize Homecoming (October 2nd) and Prom (April 16th)! SOPHOMORE INFORMATION • Class Sponsors: Ms. Moran • Class Administrator: Ms. Scott • We are in the process of organizing some fun activities for this year! Stay tuned, more information to come! FRESHMEN INFORMATION • Freshman Class Sponsors: Ms. Urias & Ms. Wittman • Class Administrators- Dr. Joiner and Mr. Williams. • The Freshman Class Organization is a wonderful way to get involved with making plans for the freshman class as a whole throughout the year! Please pay attention to the morning announcements in regards to meeting dates and class election information.
