I would like to thank the staff and students involved in these sessions and congratulate the students on their conduct. As some of you know last week we farewelled Mrs Harris in the Kindergarten whose family have moved to Perth. At the end of this term Mrs Edgerton in TA14 will be taking leave and Miss Erica Zappelli will be taking on this class. Mrs Bec Wyatt returns from maternity leave and will be providing release time for the junior primary teachers. We wish everyone well in their new roles and journeys. On Monday evening our school board members had an opportunity to participate in some training provided by Katherine Shepherd from the Department of Education School Innovation and Reform Unit. I would like to thank Mr John Burke from Hedland Senior High School for organizing this opportunity and to Board Chair Mr Harry Taylor and board member Mrs Josie Tunbridge for their participation. This will assist our school board in its operations in continuing to move our school forward. I would like to remind parents as we move into reporting period that student reports will go home on Friday the 4th of July and will include as always attendance data. Student attendance is something we are closely monitoring at the moment as we have fallen below 90% as a school. Our current attendance rate is 88.5%. Please see below the table of categories which indicates the risk your child may be at as determined by the Department of Education in relation to attendance at school. TA5 & 6 students have a good understanding that a factual description only contains facts and not your own opinion or beliefs. During a History session we were learning about Charles Sturt and his expedition through Central Australia on his quest to discover an inland sea. We discussed Australian animals that he may have encountered in the desert; the Thorny Devil was one of these animals. After Mrs Derschow and Mrs Brown modelled their creations we wrote a factual description. We then drew our Thorny Devil and with our creative flair we created our very own Thorny Devils. Mrs Derschow and Mrs Brown think that our Thorny Devils are amazing and were very proud of us and our efforts! What great fun we are having in TA5 & 6. Interm Swimming Lessons Congratulations to all students and staff who have participated in swimming lessons. I would like to commend the students on their conduct and thank The Department of Education, Atlas Iron, The Town of Port Hedland, YMCA, Go West Buses and Auswim for their support in coordinating the lessons. In 2015 we will be including the Pre-Primary Students for the first time. Well done to the students for their exemplary behaviour during these sessions and congratulations to those students whom have progressed to the next stage.
