Rotarette Official Publication of the Rotary Club of Alhambra – Chartered 1924 – No. 1744 Web Site: www.alhambrarotary.com “The World’s Friendliest Rotary Club” Volume 81, Issue 40 April 11, 2006 Last Week – Chris lays out the agenda! The meeting started right on Ziad time. The club serenaded the Prez with a beautiful rendition of America, just to prove to him we knew the words. He calmed the group down with not one but two of his jokes, something about dogs playing chess and a frog consulting a psychic healer. The guy really knows how to quiet a crowd. The announcements made it clear that we are getting in to a busy season as the promotions were coming one after the other including PP Peppy for the Heart Walk, PP Frances for the Friendship dinner, PE Lee for the District Assembly and Ziad for the District Conference, not to mention the Peace Conference and the Easter Basket distribution. More details in the upcoming events section. Our Governor Elect Chris Montan gave the club a preview of the agenda that she will present to the District Assembly this month. It was clear to everyone in the room that Chris has laid out an aggressive plan for District 5300 and has chosen a team of amazing Rotarians to help her deliver on that plan. Like all great leaders, she understands that only through the efforts of her leadership team, the leaders in each club, and every one of us will she be able to accomplish her objectives. Chris especially wanted to thank the Alhambra Rotary Club for giving her the opportunities that have transformed her from a wide-eyed youngster (pictured at the right at the time of her induction) into the accomplished confident Rotary leader who will guide District 5300 and all of its clubs in the new Rotary Year. Chris will be devoting her 20th year in Rotary to her work as District Governor and will be celebrating the anniversary of her induction at about the same time as her District Conference, Lastyears Week’s – 1/24/06 – “401K and what a twenty it has Meeting been! Rotarette 1 Retirement Plans” This Week – April 11th – The Ramona Rampage! FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an organization that aspires to make science, technology, and engineering fun and cool for kids. The FIRST Robotics Competition has teams of high school students, design, build, and test a robot capable of performing a specific task in a competition against other robots. This year’s teams played three on three games which were a combination of basketball and soccer. Robots had to play offense and defense. FIRST programs are now in operation on the international scale, with up to 70,000 children and teenagers involved. This year there are 33 regional competitions, as well as the “Nationals” in Atlanta Georgia. For six weeks in January and February, the Ramona Rampage Robotics Team wakes up early on Saturdays and Sundays to work on the robot. We must build during the weekend because we do not have a class devoted to robotics. Our moderator Mrs. Flagan has opened her home to the team because our school lacks the facilities to accommodate us. Despite our tight situation, Ramona Rampage has been able to complete a robot ready for competition the past four years. We have a close relationship with the Caltech Robotics Outreach Group (CROG) who has mentored Ramona Rampage every year since the team started in 2003. Members of Ramona Rampage in turn participate in various events that CROG hosts, such as the annual Middle School Robotics Conference. We welcome members of the Ramona Rampage and their teacher Mrs. Aulikki Flagan to our club meeting where they will tell about their recent competition in Las Vegas. With luck Tigerbot IV will have also returned from Las Vegas, and the girls will be able to give a live demonstration. Ramona was the only all-girls school at the Las Vegas competition.
