On Thursday former Chargers doctor
David Chao confirmed in an email that he
agreed to let his operating privileges lapse
at two Scripps hospitals after administration agreed to drop an investigation that
accused him of failing to comply with several hospital bylaws.
After 17 years as the
team’s doctor, Chao
stepped down on June 13
citing a desire to spend
more time with his family
and personal health issues
as the main reasons for his

Scripps as asserted in an article published
online Wednesday by USA Today.
Chao added that he still has privileges
at both hospitals but performs all of his
operations at a private surgery center.
Scripps Health said in a short statement Wednesday night that the medical
executive committees at Scripps Mercy
Hospital and Scripps Memorial Hospital,
La Jolla recommended “the revocation
of Dr. Chao’s medical staff membership
and privileges” after conducting a joint
investigation. The committees, Scripps
said, found that Chao had failed to comply
with three specific articles of medical staff
bylaws; however, the health care system
declined to list specific infractions.
Chao, the statement said, appealed the
decision to an internal Judicial Review
Committee but later reached an agreement to “waive his right to a hearing on
the pending charges and not seek reappointment with the hospitals.”
In his email, the doctor said that money
played into his decision to settle.
“I was tired of spending tens of thousands of dollars fighting at a place that I
don’t really use,” Chao said.
