St. Mark’s Lutheran Church The Pastor’s Thoughts… THE MESSENGER Volume LV, Issue 10 November 2014 Worship With Us: Saturday, November 1: Spoken Communion, 6:30pm Sundays: Worship, 9am; Sunday School, 10:30-11:30am St. Mark’s Lutheran Church 5 Brooke Manor, Birdsboro, PA 19508 Phone: 610-582-8167 | Fax: 610-404-0302 Email: stmarkbirdsboro@dejazzd.com Website: www.stmarkbirdsboro.org Pr. Bob Kramer: pastorbob@stmarkbirdsboro.org | 717-405-0044 St. Mark’s Mission Statement As a family of God’s people, our mission is: to CELEBRATE Christ, to HEAR His Word, to GROW in faith, to REACH OUT to all with His love. Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy: To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace. We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, constantly remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Thessalonians 1:1-3) So begins the oldest preserved Christian writing. To me it is ironic that these very first words express thanks to God for the church. We always give thanks to God for you. Thanks be to God for the part of the 21st century church known as St Mark’s Lutheran Church. I continue to marvel at the many ways in which we live out our faith here. Thanks be to God for you who lead worship, you who are faithful in attending worship, and you who cannot attend worship but hold the people in your prayers. Thanks be to God for you who respond on a moment’s notice when there is a need. Thanks be to God for you who serve on the committees that organize opportunities for the congregation to do ministry. Sometimes it is easy to under-appreciate the effort needed to make ministry happen. For instance the seemingly simple task of having a Harvest Fellowship Meal requires months of planning and imagination in developing new activities and attending to all the details. The seemingly simply task of gathering food for the Birdsboro Food Bank requires weeks of publicity and careful handling of the donations so that the food arrives at the bank in a usable form. The seemingly simple task of putting this newsletter into your hands requires many hours of writing and editing and distribution. So I invite you to follow the leadership of Paul and give thanks to God for the many and varied ways in which we are called and respond to serve God and witness to the love of Jesus Christ. Let the people say, “Thanks be to God!” Blessings, 2 November 2014 St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Thanks Be To God Church Leadership and Staff Directory: For everyone who participated in the October Fest Banquet… the wonderful cooks and dessert makers, those who provided the decorations, those who arranged and delivered the takeout meals to the homebound, Judy’s gift of music, Martin Luther coming back from the dead, Amy and Brian’s determination to provide a brightly waxed floor, the Outreach/Congregation Life Committee who coordinated the event, and especially everyone who attendance created a festive event. Rev. Bob Kramer, Transitional Pastor For the generous gifts of food contributed during the month of September. Staff: Amy Hall, Sexton Holly Parker, Treasurer Judy Falatovich, Organist Courtney Rothharpt, Secretary Fay Berkley, Financial Secretary For those who decorated the church for Harvest Home. Thank you Pastor Kramer & the Outreach Committee for suggesting boxed meals be delivered to our shut-ins before the Harvest Fest. Our shut-ins are part of our family of faith and should be included when events are planned. I received positive responses when delivering the meals to our homebound members. —Della Drey A Thank You card from homebound member, Lillie Gordon: “Dear St. Mark’s Family, Tim and I would like to thank you for the Harvest Home meals. SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2ND —All Saints Sunday Readings: Revelation 7:9–17; Psalm 34:1–10, 22; 1 John 3:1–3; Matthew 5:1–12 All Saints celebrates the baptized people of God, living and dead, who are the body of Christ. As November heralds the dying of the landscape in many northern regions, the readings and liturgy for this Sunday call us to remember all who have died in Christ and whose baptism is complete. Worship: 9am | SCS: 10:30-11:30am Growing in Christ through Learning following worship SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 9TH - Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost — Rev. Luther Routte, Presiding Minister Readings: Amos 5:18–24; Psalm 70; 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18; Matthew 25:1–13 On this Sunday the prophet Amos calls for justice to roll down like waters. Paul urges us to encourage one another with the promised coming of the Lord. Jesus tells the parable of the wise and foolish bridesmaids. Surrounded by the faithful of every time and place, we celebrate Christ's coming in our midst in the word of life and the feast of victory—the marriage feast of the lamb. Worship: 9am | SCS: 10:30-11:30am SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 16TH - Twenty-Third Sunday after Pentecost Readings: Zephaniah 1:7, 12–18; Psalm 90:1–8; 1 Thessalonians 5:1–11; Matthew 25:14–30 Our readings during November speak of the end times. Zephaniah proclaims that the coming day of the Lord will be filled with wrath 7 St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and distress. Paul says it will come like a thief in the night and urges us to be awake and sober. Jesus tells the parable of the talents, calling us to use our gifts, while we still have time, for the greater and common good. In a world filled with violence and despair, we gather around signs of hope—word, water, bread and wine—eager to welcome the good news of Christ's coming among us. Worship: 9am | SCS: 10:30-11:30am SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 23TH - Twenty-Fourth Sunday After Pentecost Readings: Deuteronomy 8:7–18; Psalm 65; 2 Corinthians 9:6–15; Luke 17:11–19 On this Sunday we stray from the appointed “Christ the King” texts and celebrate Thanksgiving. At harvest time we join the psalmist in offering thanksgiving to God: "You crown the year with your goodness, and your paths overflow with plenty." We are grateful for the abundance of the good things of God's creation. Paul reminds us that our thanksgiving overflows into generosity. As the body of Christ in the world, we give ourselves away as bread for the hungry. Worship: 9am | SCS: 10:30-11:30am WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 26TH, 7:00pm - Community Thanksgiving EveService that will be held at Immaculate Conception Church. Pr. Bob Kramer will be preaching. (More info. on pg. 18) SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 30TH - First Sunday of Advent Readings: Isaiah 64:1–9; Psalm 80:1–7, 17–19; 1 Corinthians 1:3–9; Mark 13:24–37 Stir up your power, and come! The psalmist's plea in Psalm 80:2 has become familiar to us in the Advent prayers. Isaiah wants God to rip the heavens open. Both cry out for an apparently distant, angry God to show up, to save, to restore. When we hear Jesus describing the coming of the Son of Man with stars falling from heaven, it can sound dire and horrible, not like anything we would ever hope for. But when we really look at the suffering of people God loves, we can share the hope that God would tear open the heavens and come.
