First Sunday of Lent
March 13, 2011
"The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve."
-- Matthew 4:10
STRENGTH AGAINST TEMPTATION
The first Sunday of the season of Lent always includes a Gospel account of the temptation of the
Lord Jesus in the desert by the devil. This year,
the story is set against the backdrop of the first
reading from Genesis, which recounts the very
first temptation by the devil. That story is set in a
garden of delight. The Gospel story is set in the
desert. As believers, we know that temptation
comes our way in our own gardens of delight as
well as the deserts of our lives. As Lent begins,
our attention is drawn to that temptation within
each of us to become like God--we want control,
power, and answers to all of life's difficult questions. As communities of faith, we are given this
season of repentance so that we can join our hearts
with others on the difficult journey of conversion.
We look to God and to one another for strength
against temptation.

Lent: A Time to Celebrate with Chocolat
This year I feel released. I went into last Lent a dry cistern
that I returned to over and over as if staring long enough
would make the water flow. Then I saw the movie Chocolat;
the story of Vianne who wanders the world with her daughter in tow bringing coca remedies to people in need of healing, just as her mother and her mother’s mothers before her.
She arrives in a small Catholic village in the French countryside whose virtue is closely guarded by the (forgive this)
puritanical Comte de Reynaud, a zealot for the Lenten discipline of abstinence.
In a town where all the women wear black shoes Vianne is a
bright light of color piercing the grayness of “tranquility”.
She attracts the decadent Armande shunned by her daughter
and aching for a relationship with her grandson; Josephine, a
vibrant woman like Vianne, but trapped and cowed in an
abusive marriage; and Roux the river rat, himself scorned by
the villagers. She also attracts the ire of the Comte when he
sees Lenten discipline give over to rose-creams, pepper triangles, and Guatemalan cocoa beans that awaken the passion.
Vianne is able to bring the townspeople together, but she
remains broken; with control vanquished, the Comte loses
his way. The chocolate that healed the town gives it the
strength to offer Vianne a place to rest and the Comte a new
path to follow.
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — The man and the woman ate the fruit
of the one tree that God had told them to avoid, and their
shame overtook them (Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7).
Psalm — Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned
(Psalm 51).
Second Reading — Death reigned from Adam to
Moses, but now grace and life abound in Christ Jesus
(Romans 5:12-19 [12, 17-19]).
Gospel — Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit and
there he fasted for forty days and forty nights
(Matthew 4:1-11).
I’ll never see Lent the same way again. In the Gospel Jesus
goes into the desert and is tempted. We tend to focus on that
part when the real point of the story is he succeeded. The
characters in the movie had given over to the temptations of
anger, resentment, fear, and division. But, like Jesus, the
people of the little village in the French countryside embraced love and the angels came to minister.
The parched cistern I entered Lent with last year filled to
overflowing with rich healing water once I understood that
Lent is not time to diminish, but to grow; not time to weep,
but to rejoice in God’s grace; not time for self-recrimination,
but reflection on our lives and how we live them; it is time to
be released.
This Lent I recommend Chocolat.

Times are difficult for so many. The finance council and the parish
staff have discussed how best the parish can respond to the increased need that we are experiencing through phone inquiries,
walk-ins and the increased requests from various charitable agencies. Since September 2009, the parish has been giving 5% of the
weekly collection to a charity.

Readings for the weekend of
March 20, 2011
Religious Education Congress
St. Paul’s Goes to Anaheim!
Reading 1 Gn 12:1-4a
The LORD said to Abram:
“Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your father’s
house to a land that I will show you. “I will make of you a great
nation, and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
so that you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you
and curse those who curse you.
All the communities of the earth
shall find blessing in you.”
Abram went as the LORD directed him.
On the weekend of March 18th-20th, nearly 40, 000 people
from all over California, (the U.S., Europe and Canada,
too!) will gather at the Anaheim Convention Center for the
annual Los Angeles Archdiocesan Religious Education
Congress.
Reading 2 2 Tm 1:8b-10
Beloved:
Bear your share of hardship for the gospel
with the strength that comes from God.
He saved us and called us to a holy life,
not according to our works
but according to his own design
and the grace bestowed on us in Christ Jesus before time began,
but now made manifest
through the appearance of our savior Christ Jesus,
who destroyed death and brought life and immortality
to light through the gospel.
Gospel Mt 17:1-9
Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother,
and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
And he was transfigured before them;
his face shone like the sun
and his clothes became white as light.
And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them,
conversing with him.
Then Peter said to Jesus in reply,
“Lord, it is good that we are here.
If you wish, I will make three tents here,
one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
While he was still speaking, behold,
a bright cloud cast a shadow over them,
then from the cloud came a voice that said,
“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased;
listen to him.”
When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate
and were very much afraid.
But Jesus came and touched them, saying,
“Rise, and do not be afraid.”
And when the disciples raised their eyes,
they saw no one else but Jesus alone.
As they were coming down from the mountain,
Jesus charged them,
“Do not tell the vision to anyone
until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
