January 25, 2015 - Conversion of Saint Paul
A ROMAN CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF FAITH
THE CHURCH OF SAINT PAUL THE APOSTLE
Mother Church of the Paulist Fathers
Columbus Ave & W 60th Street
Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
January 26, 2014
Joy of the Gospel
Apostolic Exhortation
Pope Francis
Lastly, we cannot forget that evangelization is first and
foremost about preaching the Gospel to those who do not
know Jesus Christ or who have always rejected him.
Many of these are quietly seeking God, led by a yearning
to see his face, even in countries of ancient Christian tradition. All of them have a right to receive the Gospel.
Christians have the duty to proclaim the Gospel without
excluding anyone. Instead of seeming to impose new obligations, they should appear as people who wish to share
their joy, who point to a horizon of beauty and who invite
others to a delicious banquet. It is not by proselytizing
that the Church grows, but “by attraction.” (14)

NEW YORK CITY
Dear Friends –
The Annual Paulist Appeal takes place during this weekend’s masses. We transfer our Parish and
Paulist feast day, the Conversion of Paul from January 25th to this day. The readings for the day are from
the feast day.
We welcome Father David Dwyer, CSP, the Director of Busted Halo®, the Paulist Fathers’ ministry and media outreach to Catholics in their 20s & 30s. He hosts “The Busted Halo® Show with Fr.
Dave” on SiriusXM radio’s The Catholic Channel (ch. 129), a nightly call-in talk show, and co-hosts the
weekly “Conversation with Cardinal Dolan.”
Father Dave speaks around the country about reconnecting young adults with their faith, and has
offered commentary in or on CNN, The History Channel, NBC Nightly News, Fox & Friends, The Today
Show, The New York Times, Newsweek and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. He has worked in campus ministry at the Universities of Colorado and Texas, and has developed young adult ministry programs
for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA. He was ordained a Paulist priest in May 2000, but
prior to answering the call to priesthood he directed television for MTV and Comedy Central. He holds a
Masters of Divinity from Catholic University and a B.S. degree in communication from Syracuse University.
The Future of our Faith
The Paulist Fathers have always made educating and preparing men for the priesthood a top priority. In May of 2012 three men were ordained here at the Mother Church of the Paulists, our parish.
But you need to be involved too. Many of our seminarians have said that what prompted them to
first consider a vocation was someone they knew – a friend, a family member, a fellow parishioner – asking them the question: “Have you ever considered the priesthood?” We encourage you to ask the question of someone you think might make a dedicated and dynamic priest, and if you find that special person,
ask him one more thing – ask him to speak with one of our Paulists to learn more. Or, you can direct him
to our website, http://paulist.org/vocation, where he can learn about our training program, and read individual stories from Paulists about how they discovered their calling.
Another very important way you can help our future priests is through your financial support. To
train one man, for one year, costs over $50,000. Your financial support is essential in helping us provide
the education required to meet the challenges our future Paulist priests will face.
My heartfelt gratitude for your generosity and all of your support of the Paulist Fathers and our
mission today and over the years!
Peace,
Fr. Gil

William Blake once defined the work of the poet: “To see
the world in a grain of sand and eternity in an hour.” This
month’s gathering asks, How have we taken the precious
but ordinary things of life and sung their song? Have we
uncovered the eternal in the transient moments of our day?
To do this is to follow a clear path to poetic thought. In a
world filled with “instant” everything, there is another
world that attends to a slower, deeper rhythm. It is just a
single dimension away.
All are welcome at these gatherings: poetry writers, poetry
lovers and the poetry curious. We meet at the parish center
of St Paul the Apostle Church, 405 W 59th Street. Free and
open to the public.

The Last Monk of Tibhirine
A True Store of Martyrdom, Faith, and Survival
Tuesday, February 25 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm
Parish Center
This is a story of a truly humble man. Jean-Pierre Schumacher lived alongside the seven Trappist monks who were
killed during the Algerian Civil War—men who witnessed
to the grace and peace of Jesus Christ not only through their
deaths, but also through their lives. In addition to providing
an insider’s look at the story of the Tibhirine martyrs, JeanPierre’s story is a reminder that we are all called to a life of
Christlike love. This story was popularized by the movie Of
Gods and Men. Please join us for this exciting discussion!

Call to Artists
Openings Fall 2014 Exhibit
at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle, New York City
#occupycommonground
With this year’s theme, #occupycommonground, Openings
is asking you to reflect on the artistic, social, and political
implications of common ground, particularly what we perceive to be the paradox of social media. Intended to create
immediate connections across a globalized world, social media also breeds isolation and disillusionment. How do digital
platforms mediate your relationships with others and with
your art practices? Are you an analog person living in an
increasingly digital world? Are technology and analog thinking at odds? If not through social media, how do you create
common ground in this digital age? Your response addresses
the timely question:
“Where is our common ground?”
Deadline for submissions: February 22, 2014, Midnight EST

A Word from Servant of God,
Father Isaac Hecker, CSP
Founder of Paulists and
1st Pastor of our Parish
No one is more aware of what such an enterprise demands
and will cost, as sketched out, than I am, and if it be not
clearly the will of God in my regard I will be glad to escape
it. But should it prove to be His will, then I am ready to
stand alone, pay the costs, and suffer any treatment.
Each week we ask our readers and parishioners to pray for the
sick listed in our bulletin. You can add a name by contacting the
parish-center 212-265-3495. We will continue to list the name of
the person for one month unless otherwise notified. The Power of
Prayer is an important part of healing.
